Unsolicited premium messaging services

This month I received a $9.99 charge for premium messaging service. Upon investigation I found some texts on my phone from 39000 Get Answers Now - Mozoot. I ignored the messages and never replied. Nevertheless I was somehow charged for a service I didn't request, didn't authorize, didn't use, didn't interact with in any way.
I have attempted to contact Mazoot, but their phone support is very unhelpful. These people are scammers. I have now blocked premium messaging on all phones on my plan.
But the reason I am starting this discussion is to point out how complicit Verizon is in these sorts of affairs. They do not itemize on their bill what service is responsible for the premium charges. If I had happened to delete these texts I would have had no trail, and would likely still be getting charged. Verizon should be more proactive in weeding out these shady services who prey on their customers utilizing their billing process. Verizon will not provide refunds, they insist the customer take it up with the scammer. Good luck.
But they are obviously happy to foster this revenue stream and turn a blind eye to the tactics employed. They will continue to claim ignorance even though they must know. They must get scores of inquiries and complaints.
Terrible business practice, demonstrating a complete disregard to customers.

Those charges were actually detailed on your bill. You ignored them. You had to have entered your phone number on a website, Facebook survey or something for that company to start sending you messages. Verizon Wireless has provided the tools to stop such messages and has provided those tools for years. You can block premium messages through your MyVerizon account online. You can forward the message to "SPAM" (7726) and follow the instructions in the reply.

I thought Verizon is serious company and would not allowed such companies like " premium messaging service "  to fraud their customers . They charged me $60 for four months
After having a 5 hours phone conversation with Verizon‘s customer service and fraud department they agree that this service was a scam / fraud from a third party company and they gave me back the credit for April, march and February and also they blocked the so called premium messaging service . they did not gave me the credit for the fourth month for which I am still waiting

I have been a strong proponent that it is the subscribers actions that cause these issues. I believe most are due to user mistakes. However, There are articles coming out that a company named Jawa would send out a message with a comment to opt out, to reply STOP. That actually opted one in.
VZW has sued them after three years of this occurring. The defendents answer to the lawsuit states VZW and ATT allowed them to do this as they made 30% off of these premium messages.
I think this will grow into a larger issue.

Verizon knows darn well there is tons of companies out there scamming people with these premium charges ..... yet they offer no protection at all to the loyal customers. I have 5 lines and have been a loyal customer for years (formally alltell). All i got was customer service saying ....... " you had to of signed up"    No that is a load of crap i never signed up for anything ........... They told me i would have to text cancel to each of them to get them to stop  which i did     I even had a block put on every line for premium messaging ............. 40 dollars for nothing ......... i was robbed ......and next bill    yet again  another 40 dollars .......... this is a load of crap and again verizon refused to credit my bill or help in any way ............ all they could say was well you wont get billed again ........... what a way to treat your customers  I am seriously thinking about switching to another provider and i hope others do the same

Thanks to the community for the feedback! Scruff001, I've spoken on the topic of Premium Message Services on the forums before. It was a very detailed explanation of how the service providers charge for their services. I won't bother you with the details here. I did want to mention that (like any other billable service provider including VZW), Premium Message Services have billing cycles. Meaning that if they start billing you on the 15th of the month, it's likely that they will bill you again on the 15th of the following month and so forth.
I don't know when your VZW bill cycle date occurs or when this Premium SMS set your lines up, but I can give you an example timeline of why you saw two bills:
    Example:
June 02: Premium SMS starts billing
June 10: VZW generates a bill, featuring charges for the Premium SMS that were assessed on June 02
July 02: Premium SMS bills again
July 04: You review your VZW bill for payment, notice the charge and ask for the services to be blocked
July 10: VZW generates a bill, featuring charges for the Premium SMS that were assessed on July 02
August 10: VZW generates a bill, but no more charges for the Premium SMS appear

  • Premium messaging scams

My current bill has 2 charges on my wife's number for premium messaging services "Pure Luv Alerts"  and "Cellfunz". She swears she never subscribed to them. A quick internet search shows numerous scam reports from others who had the same thing happen. How can these companies get away with this? Can Verizon do anything to prevent it? Do these services have some official business relationship with Verizon? If so you should sever it with the companies that are doing this.
PS I've now blocked premium messaging services on both our lines.

There are ways to subscribe to premium SMS services without fully realizing that you have done so. Probably the easiest is through Facebook. By giving Facebook your mobile # and playing some of the endless games available via Facebook COULD subscribe you to a premium SMS service. I am sure that this is listed in the ToS that you have to agree to when you first play one of these games. How many people just click "I Agree" instead of actually reading these agreements? Anytime you give out your mobile # on a website, you are also setting yourself up for the possibility that the website will sign you up for premium SMS. Do you read the privacy policy of any/all websites you visit or give your cell # to?
Does Verizon do anything to prevent this? Yes, and you have taken the precaution that Verizon offers to prevent exactly this from happening. I have done this to ALL of the lines on my account.

  • I am being billed for premium messaging and I've never used it.

I received my verizon bill last month. Noted I was charged $19.98 for premium messaging under Data. This showed up on my statement for my one phone - 989-600-7940.  I've never used premium messaging for data on any of my phones. I want my bill adjusted.

    Welcome to the community, vtx1800sba!
Thank you for making us aware of potential billing errors. Please be cautious about posting your cell phone number here or anywhere online. (To protect yourself and the billing on your account).
Let me add to what the community posted by explaining that a premium SMS is a premium message service above the standard texting on your plan.  It allows special daily/weekly/monthly services, whether it be horoscopes, ringtones, jokes-of-the-day, reality television voting, etc.
If this issue has not already been addressed please PM me your name and contact number so I can help in resolving this issue.
    Thank you again!

  • Premium Message Blocking - What does recipient and sender see?

I recently blocked all texts that could come via a website or PC under the Verizon Safeguards link because I was receiving harrassing texts, and I am wondering what would I see if someone were to attempt to send me a text from their email or website?  I also am interested in what the sender would see on their end after attempting to send the text.
Since changing this setting to block these types of texts, I have recently been receiving texts that say the following:
"Premium Messaging to this mobile number has been blocked.  Only the account owner may request a change to this setting with his/her wireless provider".    Is this message an alert to me that someone has attempted to sent me a text????
Thanks in advance for your help!!!!

Yes, the message you received from VZW was to inform you that a premium message was sent to your mobile number, but it didn't come through because the block is enabled.
If a VZW customer attempts to send you a premium message, they will get this message(the subscriber (Mobile Directory Number) has Premium Messaging Block enabled.).
If you make an attempt to send a premium message, you will get this message(Premium Messaging to this mobile number has been blocked. Only the Account Owner may request a change to this setting with his/her wireless service provider.).

  • Has anyone gotten a "Premium Messaging" charge on their bill for "Roundhouse Management Alerts"?

I was looking at my most recent bill and noticed that there was a $9.99 charge on one of our lines for "Premium Messaging."  I pulled up last month's bill and the noticed that the charge was there as well.  I called Verizon and asked the customer rep what this was for.  She said it was for something called "Roundhouse Management Alerts" but she had no idea what this was.  I told her we did not subscribe to any such service and she acknowledged that it was possible someone could have signed the line up for the alert without our knowledge.
Verizon handled this immediately to my satisfaction.  The customer service representative took the charge off our new bill and credited our account for the previous month's charge that had already been paid.  Nevertheless, it's kind of frightening that Verizon might process a charge from some outside vendor without verifying that the charge was legitimate.  We have multiple lines and its just lucky that I noticed this charge appearing when I did.
Has anyone else run into this?

I too just discovered a Permium Messaging charge on my husbands line. It had something to do with Facebook, MySpace & Twitter updates. My husband doesn't use any of these social websites! Customer servce was kind enough to remove the charge & give me a number to text so we could opt-out. A block for Premium Messaging has been put on both our lines!
I'm so glad to hear that others have been able to have these charges removed as well.
Thanks Verizon for the great customer service!!

  • Those PREMIUM MESSAGING charges

I originally posted this suggestion under an older post and the original poster to the thread suggested that I move the message up to a current discussion.  Just an FYI Premium Messaging charges are alive and well and being added to your Verizon bills whether you have approved them or not.  The Verizon rep that I talked to was a great person - very polite and helpful within what he was capable of doing........ however I feel that charges from known "scam" sites be at least be questioned by Verizon or:
I suggest that Verizon require a valid contact phone number posted with any company posting charges to our Verizon phone bills.  At least there would be a contact number available without the Verizon user having to do the "detective work" and go after people using Verizon to scam Verizon subscribers.  We had a Premium Messaging charge appear mysteriously at the same time a phone was upgraded so therefore apps etc were upgraded on that phone.  Since a Smartphone had been added, the extra charge was not as evident since I knew that there would be an additional charge on our bill.  We did not agree to anything being added to our bill from this site nor did we use any of their services.
In our case, the charge was for RingtonesEverywhere,  Verizon would only take off the current month's charge and not the charges back to October so it's up to the Verizon customer to do the dirty work and go after fraudulent charges added to the monthly Verizon bill.  I trusted Verizon up to this point but will go through my bill monthly - my bad for being a trusting Verizon customer.  Never again!
I will be taking a good hard look at other cell phone providers in the area when our contract comes up for renewal if Verizon doesn't come up with better methods of protecting it's customers from fraudulant charges being added onto the monthly bill.

If you had reviewed your bill each month, you would have caught it in the first month. Then you could have requested the charge be removed and future premium messages blocked for all lines. For it to have been on your bill in the first place, someone on your account had to give the number for something thinking that they were going to get a free ringtone or filled out a survey.
I had a premium message years ago and was charged for it. I called right away and got the charges reversed. I also was instructed how to block such messages through MyVerizon account online. I never had another message for the life of that account. When I started my current account with Verizon Wireless, I created a new MyVerizon account as soon as possible. The next account management items I took care of was to block those same premium messages and messages from the Web. After almost two years with that account, the blocks are still in place and I haven't been charged once for a premium message.

  • Premium Messaging Charge

I realized I have been charged 9.99 for the last 3 months.  Verizon Customer Service said they could not help me other than to block the messaging from now on.  The said the charges camer from NewsUCanUse but they had no phone number and no way to contact them for a refund.  I went to NewsUCanUse website and there is no phone number.  Luckily the number was attachted to a text on my phone:888-833-0755.  I had to tell the rep how I got the number before I could proceed.  She said to sign up that I would have had to enter my phone number into a website and then went in my phone and put in a password.  I did not do this ever.  Thankfully they gave me a full refund immediately.

The problem is that over the course of days, weeks, or months, the ability to discern the specifics of what did or did not happen become weakened. You could have been signing up for a valid website or using apps on Facebook and did not uncheck a little box that explains that it authorizes third parties to contact you (I see this little box everywhere). There have also been reports that some Droid apps downloaded from the Google Marketplace have been setting up Premium SMS services. With all of these possibilities, it is nearly impossible to discern what exactly was performed to cause the service to appear in the first place. If I can make a solid recommendation, block the service.
Read your monthly bill detail carefully each month that is how we picked up Premium Messaging charges on two phones @ $ 19.98 each, scheduled to bill monthly. Four separate 5 digit numbers ranging from dating services to ring tone downloads, none of which where legitimate on our part. Because I took the initiative and waded into Verizon's automated voice customer services I was able to have them reverse all premium messaging charges off my bill. Unsubcribing to the individual text messages worked but I recommend going online @ Verizon.com and blocking all further "Premium Messaging" text messages on your cell phone.
Verizon is complacent in this scam, even though my charges where readily reversed by Verizon, I feel they continue to have culpability in this matter. Verizon facilitates the scam by allowing usage charges to appear on their monthly billing, counting on most people pressed for time to pay their bill without looking at the usage line items.

  • Premium messaging mystery

I received a $9.99 charge for premium messaging.  According to Verizon Wireless, my phone somehow signed up to receive MLB scores on a monthly basis (my phone is not actually receiving the service, and of course no one in my house signed up for it - we don't even follow baseball).  They even had the date I supposedly signed up for the service (Jan. 20).  I also contacted the service provider, and they said the only way to sign up for the service is to enter the cell phone number on their website, and when a pin number gets texted to my phone, I enter the pin on their website.  They said someone would have to have physical access to my phone in order to sign up for this service, and that all of their systems are automated.  I went back through all of my messages - I never received any kind of pin number in December or January, and of course, I don't actually get the MLB service either.  So it begs the question - how does my phone number get billed for a service I didn't sign up for and don't receive?   I asked Verizon if my phone could have been hacked, and of course they said no.  Right.
The charges were removed, and my phone number has been blocked from receiving all premium messages, but unless the service provider's automated system screwed up and started billing my number without sending me the service (or sent the service to another phone), I gotta believe my phone was hacked.  Anyone else have this happen?

    Hello happy community members,
How people are signed up for premium text messaging without their knowledge has always been a mystery to solve. Such messages come in some many forms that it's difficult to pinpoint it's origins. I can assure you that I can help you get to the bottom of this and resolve this once and for all. The first thing I recommend is that we go through the opt-out process. On your bill, there should be a five or six digit number next to the premium text message and it's charge. This is the number that we need to unsubscribe to this  service. Simply send a text message to the five or six digit number with one of the five words below:
    Stop
    Stop All
    Quit
    Cancel
    End
    Unsubscribe
Once you have sent a text message with one of the words/phrases above then you will receive a cancellation text reply advising that you have successfully opt-out. Also, in this text message will be some contact information to the company that billed you for the service. If you would like to pursue a refund for any charges that you may incur then this information will be very useful. Oftentimes, there will be an e-mail address or an 800 number to call. If you are curious as to how the service was signed up for then they are able to verify the date, time, and device that the premium service was subscribed on.
As a customer, you have two options on how to prevent this from happening in the future. If you do not use text messaging the you can block the text messaging service altogether from your mobile number. If are using text messaging on your device then we offer a premium text messaging block. Assuming that you are not using another form of premium messaging, then this may be the best option for you. If you would like to know more about how these options work, please reply to this posting with your concerns.
    Thank you...

  • App Links appear to use Premium Messaging

I was wondering if anyone knew why when I use the ability to send an app to my phone using the "Send to my phone" button on a developer.palm.com/webChannel/index.php?packeted=... page and it appears to send the link to the phone as a "Premium Message" I have this feature turned off on my phone service since normally these are used for services that cost money, and don't want to have to enable it.  Having seen what is sent to a friends phone who has this enabled and I don't see any reason for this to be done this way, but perhaps I am missing something.  Is there a fee being charged for being sent the link?
In summary instead of getting a link I could use to try and install an application, I get the following message sent to my phone via SMS:
"Premium Messaging to this mobile number has been blocked.  Only the account owner may request a change to this setting with his/her wireless service provider"
I have both SMS and MMS enabled and working, so I believe the error message is correct.
    Thanks,
      BIll

I selected "Install" on one of the Free Applications at Project Appetite and after entering my mobile number, it ends up sending me the same error message.  It does seem to be using the same mechanism.  Which probably means I would be unable to get any of those applications.

  • Premium Messaging Charge / Blocking

Last month, my bill was roughly $10 higher than normal. As I reviewed my bill, I found a premium messaging charge for $9.99 for some Quiz4Now thing. Knowing that I would never sign up for anything like that, I called Verizon who was to put a block on Premium Messaging and I contacted Quiz4Now for stop that service. Fast forward to this month's bill and I have the same charge show up for the same thing.
I am assuming that the block is in effect, but this charge already occured at the beginning of my cycle and I wasn't able to stop the scam subscription in time but I am concerned that I will never be able to know that Verizon has actually put a Premium Message block on my service.
How can I know for sure?

Then call Verizon and have the charge expunged.
We signed up for communications services not payment gateway services.
We need to tell Verizon that this is unacceptable. There are a bunch of scam artists extorting the loophole that never should have been there in the first place.
Of the over 70 million smartphone users in the US how many have said exactly what you said, THANK YOU when told they could block the hole?
The hole should never have been there to begin with.

  • "Premium Messaging" (aka "Premium Text Messaging) - Blocking 3rd Parties from Generating and Opting Out

<Duplicate post and will be locked. Please see any replies at How can I block text msgs?.>
NOTE: THIS MESSAGE IS INTENDED AS INFORMATION SHARING
Here is what I've recently learned (the hard way) about "Premium Messaging"/”Premium Text Messaging” charges of $9.99 that show up in the "Usage Charges" section of your monthly bill under Data (taken from an email from a Verizon Wireless Customer Service Rep):
"...Premium Text Messages are services offered by third party content providers. They can offer many different things such as: weather or news alerts, sports score alerts, horoscopes, jokes, and even traffic reports. They can also provide entertainment services such as: games, trivia, chat services, free ring tones, or as a part of social media for services provided through Facebook or other sites. You may also be familiar with television or radio programs that have you vote for your favorite artist by sending a text message to a short five or six digit code. Sending a text to those codes is how you get signed up for these services.
In order to remove it, you simply send a text message from that specific phone to that short code. (34135) In the body of the text, simply write the word Stop. Finally go ahead and send the message. Within a few minutes, you should receive a text back from that company stating that you have cancelled out of their subscription service.
...I recommend sending this text as soon as possible to avoid future charges. Judging by the date you supplied, they appear to charge on the 6th of every month."
What this boils down to is that Verizon is complicit in allowing 3rd parties to occur extra charges via their monthly billing, despite the fact that you may have not realized the text was an "opt out" type. If you read the texts that come in English, the method of opting out is specified, which in my case was replying to the text with just the word STOP – I was thereby opted out, BUT FOR JUST THAT SPECIFIC 3RD PARTY. You should then (IMMEDIATELY) call Verizon customer service at 1-800-922-0204 and request that “Premium Messaging” be blocked.
I believe you can also do this yourself at:

You can also read about this subject at:

For those who say “you should have read your contract more clearly in the 1st place”: my father had died not long before I signed up with Verizon, and I was still in a fog, not really capable of absorbing a lot of information.  I don’t remember reading the first such msg I got; I might have even deleted it before reading it completely because at 1st glance you can tell it's a solicitation. What that very brief, 1st glance doesn't scream out at you is the fact that this is something you must reply to opt out of.

I called customer service from my phone to get this taken care of, and everything went great.
If anyone else has the same problems, just know that I got this resolved immediately.  I put the block on premium messaging last night, and this morning I saw a Verizon Support tweet about this same issue that recommended forwarding the spam message to 7726.  I did that and followed some instructions that were replied back to me.  Then I went ahead and called customer service, told them the problem, and they issued a credit right away.  I just checked and it went into effect immediately.
Like I said, if anyone else has this problem, these steps resolved it perfectly for me.  Good job, Verizon.
