Unwanted Invisible Characters that muck up my HTML

My problem is a bit tricky to describe so bare with me if I use the wrong terminology or am somewhat vague: I design an email, hand off the .psd file to my developer who codes my design into CSS and HTML. When we paste this code into our email deployment software we get an error message preventing us from pasting our code.
We've located the problem: invisible characters hidden in the text inserted by Photoshop which my developer inadvertently copies when he copies and pastes text from the .psd file to the HTML file.
We then have to fix this problem tediously to get the code cleaned up. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this issue?
Thanks for the help!

No, I will not 'bare' [sic] with you, as I'm not much for shared communal nudity; but I will gladly bear with you.
We'd need to see a sample file and your alleged extraneous characters, as well as examine whatever font(s) you are using. Due to the current unavailability of clairvoyants and mind-readers in the forum, we respectfully request you supply sensible, complete details.

In Pages documents, how to search and replace text involving invisible characters, colors and font sizes—a task which is so easy in Mircosoft Word?

How can I show/hide the invisible characters in Mac Keynote 6?

we call them non printing characters
this cant be displayed in Keynote, Keynote is a video based presentation application and does not have many typographic tools.
The sister application to Keynote is Pages which can show non printing characters so you should use that;

• JTextArea - invisible characters

Hi together,
how can I make invisible characters like "carriage return", "line feed" or "tab" in JTextArea visible?
Some text editors can enable a feature, like
tab will be displayed as ->
carriage return will be displayed as CR
line feed will be displayed as LF
A.

RSyntaxTextArea has a method that toggles visibility of whitespace (spaces and tabs) but not newlines. You can make newlines "visible" by the code suggested above, but note that it inserts a real character at the end of each line. That means that it's really only a good solution for read-only documents.
The following should work:
textArea.setWhitespaceVisible(true);
textArea.setText(textArea.getText().replaceAll("\n", "\u00b6\n"));Note that the code snippet above must be done after the call to textArea.setSyntaxEditingStyle("whatever").

• Printing Invisible Characters...

Good Morning:
For training purposes, Is there a way to print the invisible characters in an InDesign document?
I need to be able to show what characters are being used to demonstrate things like using the tab character, right indent tab character, indent to here, space, em space, etc...
Please and thanks!
Theresa

Yes, Peter, you are correct. I need to be able to show examples of "good" and "less good" methods of typesetting. The screen capture works, but I was hoping to avoid taking all the screen shots. I would love to be able to print out a copy of the document with all of the invisible characters showing that I could demonstrate to our designers where the methods used could be improved. See example below:
This is an example of a hanging indent being done using a "less than productive" method...
Notice the manual line breaks followed by a tab character to create the indent on the next line. (GRRRRRR....)
This is an example of a hanging indent being done using a “cleaned-up” method...
By using the “Indent to Here” character after the first tab, all of the remaining lines in the paragraph will line up with that space
regardless of the length of the line of text.
This is just one of MANY examples that I have of mind-numbing methods that have been used.
I know that in the Export to PDF dialog there is an option to include visible guides and baseline grids. I was hoping there was an option for "Print Invisible Characters".
Thanks for all your help!!

• Invisible formatting that will not disappear

I am still using the Pages prior to the most recent update, every now and then it holds onto old formatting which I have deleted. There are no invisible characters I can delete but I cannot gte the text to recognise the loss of the old formatting. I have tried deleting the page (the problem was a section with two columns) but no luck. Any ideas out there?

Dear Peter
I did upgrade to Pages 5.2 but it was a nightmare for me, I am in the middle of producing a very complex manual with all kinds of design features that the new Pages could not handle. I had to remove it from my machine before I opened too many documents withi it. I am really sorry about that, it looked so good and yet was so limited in its functionality.
So bakc on good old 4.3 - I have deleted several pages one of which was a separate section divided into two columns.
Most of the text now flows across the page fine until four lines from the end end where the text will not move out of the left hand column. I am asking it to center and it is centering, but as if in the centre of a column. Nothing I have done will encourage it to center in the centre of an A4 portrait page, deleting the page has not worked.
Thanks for your consideration

• CS4 Indesign: Invisible Characters...

Hi
I just updated my Suitcase Fusion 2 and I noticed my invisible characters are now a cross instead of a dot. Does anyone know if this is a preference checked that I can uncheck? Or does it have something to do with my current Suitcase Fusion 2?
It just is annoying to view. Should I reinstall Suitcase Fusion 2?
Thanks!

Indent to here maybe?
If not, indesignsecrets.com has a great (and free) guide of special characters in indesign. Site seems to be down right now but I guess adress is

• Invisible characters going crazy!

I have a problem that doesn’t go away, I am working happily in my InDesign document when suddenly all the invisible characters go crazy (see BEFORE), the only solution that I have found is to restart InDesign and the invisible characters go back to normal (see AFTER), have any of you encounter this problem before?
This happened in any document, being new, converted from an old version or re-open. I have deleted the preference of InDesign and it is still with me. I had snow leopard and it used to happened also, I went back to leopard (for other reasons) and it is still here. I am working with CS4 with the latest update (it happened from the start of CS4 6.0)
Thank you for any advise
BEFORE
AFTER

hi there
thank you for the advice, unfortunately the problem is still happening, I work with suitcase fusion 2 so this could be the problem.
I donwloaded the Onyx application and deleted the font cache and the problem was still happening so I tried this other method to delete the font cahe:
"To clear the current user’s font cache, first quit all running applications (otherwise, you may see font oddities after using the command), then open Terminal (in Applications -> Utilities) and run this command:
atsutil databases -removeUser
If you want to remove the font cache for all users, use this command, and provide your admin password when asked:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
Once you’ve cleared the caches, you should stop and restart the ATS server with these commands:
$ atsutil server -shutdown
$ atsutil server -ping
It will take a second or two for the server to restart, but when it does, you should be good to go. If anything still looks odd, a logout and login should take care of any lingering issues."
the problem stopped for almost 2 weeks, I thought this was it but it started to happen again.
Definitely, it is a problem with the cache, maybe it got corrupted again.
thank you again for your help.

• SQL*Plus: list of characters that need to be escaped

Hi all,
We have a requirement where we need to add comments to tables and table columns and this is done using SQL*Plus. I understand that there are some special characters that are interpreted by SQL*Plus such as ampersand (&). I would like to know the list of such characters so that we can escape them before passing it on to CREATE COMMENT ON statement. So far we have identified the following special characters:
The following characters need to be escaped no matter where they are present in the comment
single quote "'" (hex 27)
define "&" (hex 26)
sqlterminator ";" (hex 3b)
The following characters need to be escaped when they are the only character on a line
forward slash "/" (hex 2f)
blockterminator "." (hex 2e)
sqlprefix "#" (hex 23)
The following characters need to escaped if they are followed by a newline
line continuation "-" (hex 2d)
We would like to know if there are other special characters and appreciate if someone can provide the list.
Thanks

I think the only two characters you need to worry about in your comment strings are: ' and & (apostrophe/single quote and ampersand). The latter you can get around by doing:
set define offbefore running your statements, but the apostrophe you'll have to double up to allow oracle to recognise that it's not the end of the string. Eg:
I'm a stringwould become
'I''m a string' -- NB. this is two single quotes, not 1 double quote!or, if you're on 10g or above, you can use the quote operator (q):
select q'#I'm a string#' from dual;See the documentation for what characters can be used as the quote delimiters: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14251/adfns_sqltypes.htm#sthref377

I, too, have found Bridge very unstable. I find this to be extremely disappointing, seeing as it's literally the most expensive piece of software I've ever purchased for personal use. I've seen these two symptoms:
1. When running in full screen mode, Bridge crashes periodically. This happened on Vista, so I blamed Vista (of course), but even after regressing to XP SP2, I see the same symptoms.
2. Although I didn't see this on Vista, running on XP I see the problem described earlier in this thread, where clicking on a thumbnail displays the wrong image preview. When this happens the image displayed is one from a different folder! I solve the problem by clearing the cache, and it's OK for a while, but the problem keeps returning.
3. Even when exiting cleanly from Bridge (using File->Exit), Bridge often forgets where I was working in my previous session. I need to re-navigate from the very top level directory down through the hierarchy to my photo directory.
Again, it's very disappointing to invest so much in a single software package only to see such basic operations malfunction.

• Is there a list of Unicode characters that can be used in Acrobat bookmarks?

I can add Greek characters to Acrobat bookmarks using hexadecimal strings. For example, to print a lower case gamma symbol I use <FEFF03B3>. FEFF is the required Unicode flag and 03B3 is the Unicode code for gamma. This works fine. However, there are no Unicode entries for greek characters in the PDF 32000-1:2008 PDF Specification manual. Table D.2 - PDFDocEncoding Character Set on page 656 lists Unicode characters and these also work when added to bookmarks but no Greek codes are in this table. Since I can sucessfully use Greek Unicode characters in the range of 0x0391 - 0x03CE and these characters are not listed in the PDF manual I am assuming there are additional Unicode character that will work in bookmarks. Therefore, I am looking for a complete list of Unicode characters that can be used in Acrobat's bookmarks. Does such a list exist?

Thank you for the response.
I'm sorry to hear there is no list available. I'm building the Acrobat bookmarks automatically. The input data contains entity codings (for example, a lower case Greek gamma is coded as γ) and I was hoping to be able to just pass these through with an automatic conversion to a hexadecimal string (for example <FEFF03B3>). If I had a list of valid Unicode characters, that will display in an Acrobat bookmark, I could validate each entity before the conversion and catch the ones that won't display correctly. I know these types of characters are out there because I have already come across them. For example, a superscript 5 (0x2075) displays fine in MSWord but shows as a white box in a bookmark. Now I'll need to proof the output PDFs and look for white boxes in the bookmarks so that I can build my list of unicode characters that do not work in Acrobat bookmarks.
Again, thanks for your help.

Recharging is a good thing to try. They do start to act odd when the battery gets low. Beyond that, just like Tom says, contact Zagg. I have one of their keyboards and the company has wonderful customer service.

Fixed a problem with 'restrict' in TextView. If there are no characters left to insert after restriction, do nothing; don't insert an empty string and thereby delete the insertion.

When I installed iTunes 7.3 I noticed some artwork
was gone. I compared the actual file sizes to the
backup and there was no change at all. I was able to
get the covers again from the iTS, but as I really
want to have the artwork inside the files, I tried to
paste it into the tags (like I used to do since 7.0).
That doesn't work, after pasting it, the artwork is
gone again completely, but the files are now 4mb
bigger. The artwork of these files (about 300 in
total, and I cant figure out why some and some not)
can not be browsed, but the rest of the tags is fine
and the songs play just normal.
I trashed one of the affected albums and re-added it
from the backup. Now the tags in iTunes were gone
completely! I re-entered the correct tags and let
iTunes get the artwork from the iTS. The artwork
shows, but not for all files of the album. So again I
tried to paste it into the tags of all songs, and
voila: all artwork of this album is gone again and
the files are 4mb bigger.
Same behaviour in iTunes 7.3.1.
I'm happy I have a good backup of my music, and I
think the artwork is still inside the files, but
iTunes 7.3 and 7.3.1 mess it up. From what I see only
non-iTS files are affected, but only iTS artwork is
lost. NOT nice.
Any ideas? I'm no really a friend of downgrading...
After some more time consuming tinkering I still have no luck in giving certain files their artwork back. I better go back to 7.2 tomorrow... Apple keep that lousy 7.3.1 BS yourself
