Up to date JRE?

Okay, I'm not quite sure what's going on with my computer. So, here's the story, I just installed J2SDK 1.2.4_13 and I have my Classpath set up as follows:
CLASSPATH=C:\j2sdk1.2.4_13\lib;Source.;
And to my path I added:
C:\j2sdk1.2.4_13\bin;Source;
As far as I know...this set up should work but the problem is that javac isn't being recognized at all. Even when I just type in javac it doesn't get my usages. So, now what I'm considering is that perhaps because I am using jre1.5.0_04, for some reason, it is causing problems.
The error I'm getting when I try to compile my program is this:
"''javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
Does the JRE have anything to do with this and if not what should I do to fix the problem?

  • JDK upgrade confusion

    I had up-to-date JRE and an older JDK5 and wanted to get latest JDK.
    I installed jdk-1_5_0_08-nb-5_0-win-ml.exe. There is now two JDK directories JDK1.5.0_0[18] , jre1.5.0 and jre1.5.0_0[12468].
    But the environment variables did not get changed.
    CLASSPATH=.;C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\lib\ext\QTJava.zip
    javabin=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_01\bin
    JAVA_HOME=C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jdk1.5.0_01
    QTJAVA=C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\lib\ext\QTJava.zip
    I was expecting one of the updates to correct the environment variables. Or at least a document that explains what needs to be done. I am confused by the JRE vs JDK and what should point to which.
    Can anyone clarify this or point to a doc that does?

    Java installs do not create or update MS's environment variables - do that manually, as explained in the Java Installation Instructions.
    And note that your installed the Netbeans - Java combination package,
    jdk-1_5_0_08-nb-5_0-win-ml.exe
    Uninstall all but the most recent JDK and JRE version, and point the variables to them.

  • Family Versioning... What am I missing here?

    <APPLET codeBase="."
            height="0"
            width="0"
            code="com/JavaVersionDisplayApplet.class"
            name="display"
            mayscript VIEWASTEXT>
    </APPLET>Now I do absolutely do not want to use the applet tag as it is depracated, however my applet runs fine when calling this.
    I am trying to enforce JRE family versioning by specifying the classid for the JRE version 5 family running the same applet, see below.
    <OBJECT
         classid="clsid:CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA"
         width="0" height="0">
         <PARAM name="code" value="com/JavaVersionDisplayApplet.class">
    </OBJECT>For whatever reason I cannot get the same applet to display using the OBJECT tag, I don't even get the Sun Console.
    I snagged this code as part of an example provided on the Sun website.
    Could it be that if I do not have this classid in my registry that it wouldn't even attempt to load the applet? Perhaps I need a more up to date JRE version?
    3 Dukes for this one.

    http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/family-clsid.html
    The above link provides the documentation on Family Versioning and it seems I missed a small little blurb half way through.
    "In the JRE 5.0 Update 7 release for Java Plug-in for Internet Explorer, two new family Class IDentifier (CLSID) for <object> tags are introduced."
    For whatever reason I thought that these CLSID's were introduced as of Update 6 however Update 6 is only when they discontinued Static Versioning, NOT when they introduced Family Versioning.
    Give it up for Sun to obfuscate an issue.
    So anyway I installed the latest release for JRE 5 and sure enough my applet began to work with the <OBJECT> tag!
    Thanks for your help and your time in helping me to test these things.

  • Problem with picking up FileNameExtensionFilter

    Hello, me again. I have a compile-time error, but the damndest thign is that is happens on every computer in my house except my kitchen desktop. Here's the code block:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.filechooser.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;
        public class newMaker implements ActionListener{
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
                untNum++;
                FileNameExtensionFilter bra = new FileNameExtensionFilter("Brackets", ".bra");    // cannot find symbol - class FileNameExtensionFilter
                hand.setFileFilter(bra);
                JInternalFrame lilB = new JInternalFrame("Untitled" + untNum,true,true,true,true);
                Container intPane = lilB.getContentPane();
                BracketPanel brack = new BracketPanel();
                JScrollPane nuS = new JScrollPane(brack);
                intPane.add(nuS);
                lilB.setSize(brack.getPreferredSize());
                lilB.setLocation(50, 50);
                lilB.setVisible(true);
                desk.add(lilB);
                pane.add(desk);
        }The comment is as far as it goes. I have update 6 on all of my computers, so I don't understand why it's not picking up the class.

    Error message is as follows:
    "cannot find symbol - class FileNameExtensionFilter"
    I'm using the latest version of BlueJ, with the most up to date JRE. My Java folder also has:
    j2re1.4.2_03
    jdk1.5.0_06
    jre1.5.0_06
    jre1.5.0_09
    jre1.5.0_11
    jre1.6.0
    jre1.6.0_01
    To compile, I hit the "Compile" button in the code window in BlueJ, where is runs into the error above.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler -- JRE or JDK

    Hi,
    Primarily, can any of you confirm that I need JDK (or J2SE SDK as the error message states) - and not just JRE as it is stated on the download pages on OTN?
    I have just downloaded "SQL Developer Data Modeler" w/o JRE. Primarily because I already have JRE 1.6.0_17 installed, so downloading it bundled should not be necessary -- and secondly I would not want to risk intefering with the automatic software updating of JRE done by my company's IT support staff.
    I may well be a complete Java amateur, but shouldn't JRE be sufficient, if you only want to run java apps?
    Cheers, K

    Hi -K-,
    Yes, I do get an error.
    I get the prompt: "Enter the full pathname for java.exe:"
    I enter: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe"
    Then I get the error message: "Cannot find a J2SE SDK installed at path: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6."
    Which I interpret as JDK being a prerequisite for running the application -- though I do not understand why.
    Looking back at the download I realize that I have version 2.0.0-570 and not the new 2.0.0-584. I will try that tomorrow.
    Cheers, K

  • Release date for JRE version 1.4.2_13

    Does anyone have a scheduled release date for JRE Version 1.4.2_13? I'm in need of this patch as it fixes some Oracle Forms Client Issues.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jason,
    Can you please let me know the release date for Service Manager 4.1.
    Also please guide me where can I find the functionality difference between 4.1 and 4.2

  • SAX, incor. data for XML element, XML 1.1 doc (1.0 ok) in JRE 6 (JRE 5 ok)

    Hello,
    for some reason, the test case below fails when driven with Java 6. Looks like, when long string data is stored in a XML element, DocumentHandler's characters() method will be provided with incorrect data.
    With XML 1.0, parsing works fine in all my tests, Apache Xerces, JRE 5, JRE 6.
    With XML 1.1., parsing works fine with Apache Xerces, JRE5 but not with JRE6.
    I've checked it with latest JRE 6 update 4.
    Anyone else xperiencing such problems with XML1.1 parsing when using JAXP bundled with Java 6?
    I've tried to file a bug at bugdatabase, but for some reason I got no response for my issue - so I'm trying the forum now ;-)
    Thanx for comments

    thanx, DrClap, haven't seen the "code" button for some reason, code is attached again
    The output of my test is like this for JRE6 (truncated)
    xml_sun 456789 This is is some text 0. 0123456789 This is some text 1.
    xml_apache 0123456789 This is some text 0. 0123456789 This is some text 1.
    Notice, xml_sun not only starts wrong ("0123" missing) - for some reason, the text there is not "This is some text" but "This is is some text" - very interesting in a way. I guess there's an issue with repeated text chunks ...
    So, the data in my XML element is kind of changed, the length of the string is okay but the characters are "misplaced" or so :-) I thought about a problem with StringBuffer first, but the StringBuffer works fine for Apache ... so I really think there's an issue with JRE 6's parser for XML 1.1

    Usagetracker.properties is supposed to be supported starting at 6u25 as per Oracle Documentation.
    Is there another limitation or configuration to be done in order for this feature to work with 6u29 that I am not aware of?

    Now I googled this but almost every hit was to do with java 1.4 and not being able to handle a 4096 bit key. In this case, neither of those is true.
    The other interesting thing is other users are able to hit the server and load the applet no problem. So it's not something server side.
    Originally, the client was using java 1.5 until I upgraded it to 1.6 on the offchance it would address the problem. Alas, not.
    Any insights much appreciated.

    In my case this issue has been resloved using the Compatibility View Settings and add the page. It's one of the problem to use IE 8 :S

  • Ntuser.dat; registery settings affecting jre

    hello,
    I have been working on a project that requires jre 1.4.2_* (we are using _05) that is utilized to access an applet driven website. We have W2K boxes on a novell network using IE 6.0. We are using a test pc and everthing seems to have loaded properly (JRE). In accessing the site we get the dreaded red "X" as the applet(s) have not been initialized.
    In working on a different box (with the same image as the test pc) on the same network I loaded the mentioned settings and modifying the specific JRE under the advanced tab in the java plugin and too the correct browser. It worked. Having another user login they failed and had the similiar red "X" mentioned above. In troubleshooting we moved my ntuser.dat file into the other users profile and it worked. Going back to the test pc and performing the similiar step it worked as well.
    I was hoping someone could tell me what in the ntuser.dat file is a registery setting preventing/allowing users from having applets work properly? Is there some type of authentication or cerfificate setting? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated so we can assure that we permanently fix the problem.
    thanks in advance,
    Michael

    The most likely Registry entries are associated with keys that contain the term "JavaSoft", so search for this and see what you find. There are other java-associated registry entries, though.

  • Sharing data in the JRE

    I Have a class called syncList that basically has a static List and is also a singleton. I have 2 other classes that use syncList called syncListTest1 and syncListTest2.
    syncListTest1 puts an entry into the static list and then displays its contents then waits for thirty seconds(just for testing purposes).
    syncListTest2 simply reads the static Lists contents.
    When I execute syncListTest1 from a command line and then syncListTest2 from another command line syncListTest2 shows the list as being empty.
    My question is: Is there any way of sharing the same syncList between separate applications so that each application can share the same List data?
    Any help would be much appreciated before I tear out the last of my receding hairline!!!
    Code for syncList.
    import java.util.*;
    public class syncList
       private static List<String> sl = new ArrayList<String>();
       private static syncList ref;
       private syncList()
       public static synchronized syncList getSyncList()
          if (ref == null)
             System.out.println( "ref is null, creating syncList" );
             ref = new syncList();
          else
             System.out.println( "ref is NOT null, creting syncList" );
          return ref;
       public void add( String Val )
          sl.add( Val );
       public void remove( String Val )
          sl.remove( sl.indexOf( Val ) );
       public void removeAll()
          sl.clear();
       public void showMe()
          for( int i = 0; i < sl.size(); i++ )
             System.out.println( i + " " + sl.get(i) );
    }Code for syncListTest1.
    public class syncListTest1
       public static void main( String[] args )
          syncList.getSyncList().add( "1 Added" );
          syncList.getSyncList().showMe();
          try
             Thread.sleep(30000);
          catch( InterruptedException e )
    }Code for syncListTest2.
    public class syncListTest2
       public static void main( String[] args )
          syncList.getSyncList().showMe();
    }

    Hi
    When you say that a class is a Singleton, you basically want the JVM to ensure that there is only one instance of the object [This you do by declaring the costructor private and an instance static member]... Now, look at it from JVM's point of view, there is one class with one static member that is created within the class [getInstance() method]... The JVM has no way to tell anyone or even know the existence of anyone else outside itself.... in your case another JVM. You obviously have to make the two JVMs talk... now the problem remains, how to get them talk.....
    There are many solutions to your problem... You are trying to do a IPC [Inter Process Communication] which can be done using socket programming/shared memory... etc...
    There is another set of solution which deals with J2EE application server clustering....
    But looking at your problem, looks like you want a clean and simple way to do this....
    well... one of the very easy ways I would have done it was to use JGroups [Assuming I am not in a J2EE container which provides better options]. This is a very simple clustering framework which helps you replicate some datastructures [in your case a hashmap] over different JVMs and maybe on different machines.... In a very simple High Level overview, it broadcasts the shared datastructure content over the network and all the peers listen to the message thereby updating the shared data.
    Infact JGroups provides a DistributedHashtable [http://www.jgroups.org/javagroupsnew/docs/newuser/node55.html]
    Hope this helps
    Fasih

  • Does Data Modeler 3.3 Early Adopter (3.3.0.734) work with jre 7u11  ?

    I have got the impression, DataModeler 3.3 is still not working with Java 1.7.0_11, still requiring 1.6

  • JRE bug or Windows Vista error?

    Hi everybody. I have a problem with the report generation. I'm using HSQLDB 1.8 as dbms. I am using Hibernate too but I am using a JDBC connection for the reports. I designed some reports with iReport 4.0. I have two types of reports in my application, the first type prints invoices and the second type prints sales reports.
    For the second type I need to include dates (using this notation '2011-1-1') in the WHERE statement. This kind of reports produces an exception but not the first type. This is the message when I request a sales report (I deleted some lines):

    I tested this query in the HSQLDB utility and it is correct. I am thinking that the problem could be the JRE, I am using this one:
    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin>java -version
    java version "1.6.0_24"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_24-b07)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 19.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing)
    As you can see, my Windows Vista pc can't recognize the java command so I have to call it specifically from the directory where it is located. Maybe the problem is that I am using Windows Vista (I know it sucks but I had no time to change it).
    When I copy my program to my Windows XP computer it works fine. All the reports are shown correctly. This pc has this JRE:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Manuel & Juancho>java -version
    java version "1.6.0_01"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_01-b06)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0_01-b06, mixed mode, sharing)
    There is no problem to recognize the java command.
    Let me tell you something. Is it possible that HSQLDB or iReport can delete the database content? It happened to me. I was designing my last report and a "No pages in document" message was shown. I thought that I was wrong. Finally I checked the database and there was no data! What is the problem?
    Please help me.
    Thanks in advance.

    I tested this query in the HSQLDB utility and it is correct. I am thinking that the problem could be the JREAs already pointed out, for something so trivial, it's extremely unlikely that you've uncovered a JRE bug.
    As you can see, my Windows Vista pc can't recognize the java command Because you haven't set up your PATH correctly.

  • JRE freeze when loading applet twice, through VSAT network

    Here is a good one for you guys I think ...
    ===========
    What I got:
    ===========
    I have a java web application, runing with Tomcat 5.5.
    I use a Apache HTTP Server 2.0.52 for my statiques ressources (html, etc ...), and the modjk connector 1.2.13 to forward all the dynamic requests from the client to the application server.
    One of my html pages contains a signed java applet.
    Basically, this applet control a scanner and send the scanned image to the web application server.
    This applet:
    - use some swing components
    - use the netscape.javascript.JSObject to call javascript functions
    - use the morena API (which include a native library) in order to control a TWAIN scanner
    - format the scanned image into a JPEG image
    - send the formatted image to the web server, using an HttpURLConnection
    (I use a servlet on server side to get the uploaded image)
    - wait for the server response, that tells my applet if the upload has been successfull or not
    Some additional infos:
    - I use morena 6.2.0.0
    - I use JRE 1.5.0.0.1 to run the applet
    - JRE on client side is configured as follow:
    - no applet caching
    - network parameters: "use the browser parameters"
    ==============
    My problem is:
    ==============
    - Through a LAN network, the applet works perfectly ...
    - Through an internet network (I use a VSAT / IDIRECT network), I can load and run my applet the first time
    but when I try to run my applet for the second time (without closing the browser), it just doesn't start, and the JRE crash
    (i.e. the java console freeze ..., just like if it was waiting for something ...)
    nothing happen after that, and I have to kill my JRE / Browser
    the funny stuff about it is that the applet works fine (even through VSAT network) when I don't upload the scanned image on the server
    load and run ok as many time as I want ...
    => seems that something's going wrong during the uploading process
    ==========================
    What I have already tried:
    ==========================
    1/ getting rid of the Java - Javascript communication (JSObject seems to have heaps of bugs ...)
    => no changes
    2/ be careful to close correctly my HttpURLConnection, with a HttpURLConnection.disconnect()
    => no changes
    3/ put the morena jars directly on the client side (in the lib/ext directory of the JRE):
    the morena API use a native library, and apparently, a native library can not be loaded by 2 different ClassLoader
    just to avoid any "java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError"
    as shown on http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=31&threadID=628889
    => no changes
    4/ have a closer look on the http apache server, just to get rid of the error
    "OS 64)The specified network name is no longer available. : winnt_accept: Asynchronous AcceptEx failed."
    as shown on the bug 21425 in http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21425
    => no changes
    5/ use the upgrade version 1.5.0.6 of the JRE
    => no changes

    A workaround would be: don't use IE9. You want a solution, not a workaround.
    I think at this juncture you are best of creating a new bug report and be sure to reference the old closed one. It doesn't look entirely related though, your symptoms are different from what is described in it (freeze VS a crash). You tried this on several systems right? Also on machines on a different network?
