Upconverting SD clips for an HDV timeline....

So I took my SD clip into compressor and upconverted it to HDV 1080i 60.
When dropped it onto my HDV timeline it requires no rendering and matches up with the other native HDV clips (frame size wise)
Although when the upconverted clip is played in the viewer and on the timeline, at first the audio and video is synced but then quickly becomes un-synced. The video speeds up while the audio remains normal.
I then exported this upconverted clip to quicktime and viewed it through the QT player. The clip is then synced and normal.
What would cause FCP to mess up sync? Should I upconvert differently? If so, how?
Any insight?
Thanks,
-B

Alternative method, drop the SD clip on the HDV FCP timeline, change scale to 200% and render - this is how I use anamorphic 16:9 SD material with in HDV projects.

  • HDV timeline convert to SD

I have a movie on a timeline with HDV settings. Want to turn it into SD. How can I do that quickly and efficiently?

The quickiest way is to create a new sequence with SD settings (Apple Pro Res 422 NTSC or PAL for example) and then to edit (overwrite) your HDV Timeline in the new sd sequence.
FCP will warn you that the clip settings and the sequence settings do not match and will ask you if you want to change the sequence settings (SD) to match the clip settings (HDV), of course, you don't want...

  • HDV timeline output to DVCPRO master

So I have an HDV project that I digitized via firewire and edited in HDV. I now have to make a DVCPRO master. I need to export a DVCPRO Quicktime to take to a dub house that is going to make my masters. I'm trying to figure out the best workflow to get the best quality.
I've been dropping the HDV sequence into a DVCPRO sequence then rendering. The problem is when I do this, the HDV footage is wider than the canvas that is created by a sequence made with a DVCPRO easy setup. If I set the aspect ratio under the distort settings to 12 it seems to fit the video to the canvas size.
Am I doing this right? Should I just set easy setup to DVCPRO, then create a new sequence and leave the default sequence settings? Also, I've been dragging my HDV sequence to the DVCPRO sequence. I read on another forum someone say they just changed the sequence setting of the HDV sequence then re-rendered that. Or is copying and pasting the timeline the way to go?
Anyone who has done this successfully and would help me out, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance,

Still stuck on this attempt to record HDV from an HDV timeline. To Sharon...yes. Last thing I check is that Easy Setup has not reverted to 'custom' before Print to Video.
Here are some more puzzling anomalies: The color bars and tone do get recorded on tape, but when the program material comes up, the tape actually stops. Toward the end of the clips (using 60 seconds of clips for this testing) the recorder will restart and capture the last 2 seconds of the clips. I think this happens after the timeline program in the computer has finished. I'm guessing there's a cache that's recording this last couple of seconds.
I've trashed all FCP prefs, rebooted the computing machine, reset all deck settings, etc., but still failing to accomplish this simple task.
A question for anyone: should my program material be able to pass through the deck to a monitor in HDV, as was always done when working in DV? Program video just doesn't seem to be getting to the deck.
HOWEVER, a few days ago, I did record this timeline to tape. It recorded without audio, and attempting to re-record, in order to include audio, has led me down this sticky path.
The original material was captured as HDV, and some simple editing done in the same format. So I believe the timeline has the correct sequence presets. Now just wanting to send that back out to an HDV tape again.

  • How do I recerence Movie Clips on the Main Timeline from inside a class?

Hey everyone, this might be a stupid question but I thought
I'd ask cause it's making me nuts. I'm all of 2 days into AS3
(coming from not using Flash at all in YEARS) so feel free to
consider me ignorant. I do have plenty of application development
    experience in other areas though.
I can't seem to create a class that can reference an instance
of a movie clip on my main timeline. I'd post code of what I've
tried but I've gone through so many desperate edits & wild
guesses that it was just garbled junk before I deleted it all.
Basically here's how I figured Flash could work, though maybe
it doesn't work this way at all.
I'm assuming that with AS 3 being so big on being a true
object oriented environment, I wouldn't need to mix my code and
interface together. Preferably I'd be using the Flash authoring
tools just to design my interface. Create a button... place it
somewhere... give it an instance name. Roughly the equivilant of
Apple's InterfaceBuilder for those of you that might be familiar
with Cocoa development. I can see maybe having to put a few lines
of ActionScript onto frame 1 (though really I'm hoping Flash would
have a better method of kicking off the application at this point
that using code tied to frames) to load my classes & such, but
after that I'd like all of my code to be held in external class
    files.
    So maybe I've got:
    Interface.fla - My interface
    Button_1
    Button_2
    TextField_1
Main.as - My main controller class using to handle all of my
    applications behavior
    SomeClass.as - Some helper Class
    SomeOtherClass.as - Some helper Class
Main.as would have instructions in its initialization method
to go ahead & attach events to buttons & initialize
anything else that needs to happen when the application starts.
From there on it would all be objects communicating back &
forth. Button_1 would get clicked with would fire
Main.someMethod(). Main.someMethod() would then do it's thing and
set the value of TextField_1. All very clean & code is very
    separated from interface.
Unfortunately I can't for the life of me figure out how AS3
classes reference each other like that. There doesn't seem to be
any kind of a global 'root' or '_root' I can use to locate any
movie clips on the stage. I've searched the help & the web for
any kind of simple tutorial but to no avail. My job has tasked me
with building a flash app for a project but I'd really rather not
have a tone of ActionScript just shoved into frame 1. That just
    seems... ugh! (::shudder::)
Can someone maybe point me in the right direction here? I'm
really willing to do my homework but I can't seem to locate the
info I need to get started. Also, is there an ActionScript IRC
    channel or something maybe?
    Thanks,
    Cliff

I worked with the problem last night and the solution I
started coming to involved creating my own custom document class
based off which extends MovieClip. My thought is that way I have
access to the initialization routine of the timeline itself and
that all of the elements on the main timeline should be
    "properties" of my custom class.
Is this correct? Is there a down side to doing this & if
so what is it & why?
Also, just for my reference, the last time I did anything
with ActionScript I think I was using '_root' to target the main
timeline. WHat are the global variable names in AS 3? Is it just
'root' & 'stage' or 'Root' & 'Stage' or what?

  • How do I swap one clip for another in Final Cut Pro 7?

How do I sway one clip for another in Final Cut Pro 7? I am doing what it says in a book but it is not working. Thanks.

You drag the clip from the browser to the clip on the timeline. Wait till the timeline clip goes white. Drop it and pick from the menu that appears the replace option you want.

  • No external video from HDV timeline through Sony HDV deck.

Without buying an external video card, is there a way to view an HDV timeline on an external monitor? I can capture HDV footage easily and see it play back fine in the Canvas on my Mac Pro, but I can't see the captured HDV footage on my external monitor that's hooked up via FireWire to my Sony HVR-M25 deck.
Here are the Audio/Video Settings I'm using:
Sequence Preset is HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset is HDV
Device Control Preset os Sony HDV Firewire
I'm also noticing that the Video Playback HDV options are grayed out, so I'm assuming I would either need an external video card to play back the capture HDV footage the timeline on my external monitor, or use another combination of codecs to (maybe) use my stock Mac Pro setup. Whew.
    Thanks in advance.

No. Sorry, but the format doesn't allow it. You can send a downconverted SD signal out via firewire in realtime, but it won't be your full HD image. If you want the full HD image, you need an HD capture device. #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • How do I insert additional clips into my video timeline in Elements 13?  When clicking 'add media' it added the clips at end of video rather than in their appropriate position.  Could not 'cut and paste'.

How do I insert additional clips into my video timeline in Elements 13?  When clicking 'add media' it added the clips at end of video rather than in their appropriate position.  Could not 'cut and paste'.

I am in the process of preparing to test a sample from your brand and model camera in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I will have the results probably tomorrow morning.
For now I just want to put you through the drill that I do for anyone who says he/she is using Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    1. Are you working from the 8.0/8.0.1 Update of the program?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4653
    2. Do you have the automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalyzer features turned OFF.
For Background Rendering option. See Edit Menu/Preferences/General.
For AutoAnalyzer option. Click on Organizer in the row below the blue active Organize header in order to open the Elements Organizer. In the Elements Organizer workspace, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/AutoAnalyzer Options and disable all the AutoAnalzyer options. To return to the Premiere Elements workspace from the Elements Organizer workspace, in the Elements Organizer workspace, go to File Menu/Exit.
Is your computer optimized in spite of the fact that  you have a high end laptop? I presumed so but always go to verify, no pile ups of preview files, conformed video and audio files et al.
Looking at the properties of your source media, I see:
    video compression = MPEG1
    audio compression = MPEG-Layer1 (.mp2)
    Frame Size = 640 x 480 (4:3)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.0
Frame Rate = 30 progressive frames per second
With properties like those you are sure to get a red line over that content since there is no project preset with that description.
But, your choice of the default NTSC DV Standard would have been mine also.
I am heading to try to get a quick look at the behavior of the sample video here in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    To be continued.

  • How can I copy and paste a clip already in my timeline

Here is my problem I am attempting to copy and paste a video clip from video 1 to video 2 and it will not let me do it.  I am using several effects to create a moving face block and it calls for an exact copy of the section with faces to be blocked.  I have been working for 2 hours trial and error and everytime I copy and paste in video 1 it moves the next clip or the entire timeline over and I cannot get it back to where it was without unsyncing my titles and music tracks.  Thankfully it has the Udno feature but Is there any way I can copy and paste a clip in the beginning of my timeline without distorting the entire video by doing so?

Copy your clip, use the End key to go to the end of the timeline. Paste then drag to Video2. When it is over the original clip it will 'snap' into place for you.

  • How to reverse clip order in FCP7 timeline?

I'd like to reverse the order of clips in my FCP7 timeline  (NOT reversing each individual clip). I want to show some clips on the timeline and then immediatley play the same set of clips in reverse order (not each individual clip in reverse order).
Is there a way to reverse the order of the clips in the FCP7 timeline?
    Thanks!

In other words, Meg, you're saying you don't know of any way to do what I'm talking about?
Of course I could manually place them in reverse order, one by one - but that's not what I asked about. I asked how to reverse the order of the clips.
To suggest manually rearranging the order of the clips in reverse would be like if someone asked how to reverse the play direction of one clip, and someone were to reply with a suggestion of rearranging the individual frames, one by one, until reverse playback of the clip were achieved.
Let me try to clarify for anyone else that may read this, to avoid further difficulty understanding what I'm saying....
I want to know how to take a series of clips that are on a timeline (i.e. Clips A, B, C, D, E, F), and get them to be put in the opposite order on the timeline (i.e. Clips F, E, D, C, B, A).  I DO NOT WANT to manually rearrange the clips, NOR rearrange copies of the clips, NOR take the Clips from the bin and place them in reverse order on the timeline.
The point to my query is to avoid the time-consuming effort of manually placing clips in reverse order, if there is a way to do this (just like instead of taking a clip and painstakingly copy/paste each frame, one-by-one, in the opposite order of its natural way, you just Modify the Speed to Reverse).
    Make sense?

  • Smooth Slow Motion from 50 fps Clip in 50 fps Timeline

If I want 50% smooth slow motion from a 50 FPS video clip, I would normally ask PP to interpret that clip as 25 FPS - that works great.
If however I import the 50 FPS video clip and interprett it as 50 FPS, I would have to set the speed of the video clip in the timeline to 50% to get the same level of slow motion.
The question is - when I follow the latter method, does PP create new frames for the slow motion or is it clever enough to use all the frames from the original 50 FPS video clip? to put it another away, does PP always generate NEW frames for slow motion or does it try to use the frames we are attempting to ignore?
I've done some basic tests and so far I can't see any real difference between the two methods. This leads me to beleive PP is effectively using all of the original 50 frames when the 50 fps video clip is imported into a 50 fps timeline and then slowed down in the timeline by 50%. - if this is the case, well done PP!!! If this is not the case, then it would be a welcomed enhancement in future releases.
I guess what you are all wondering is why would I want to import a 50 fps video clip into a 50 fps timeline and then slow it down in the timeline - well, as a wedding Videographer, it is simply because some parts of the video need to be in slow motion and other parts like messages and speeches need to be interpreted at normal speed. If playback in the timeline is at normal speed, i find it simpler to slow down the "Walking Down the Isle" clips rather than having to speed up the speeaches and messages.
In short, when importing 50 fps video for smooth slow motion, are both the following methods equally effective in terms of smooth motion?
Method 1: Import the 50 fps video clip into 25 fps timeline
Method 2: import the 50 fps video clip into 50 fps timeline and set the speed of the video clip in the timeline to 50% - I'm assuming PP does not generate new frames and gets them from the original 50 fps file instead..
To put it another way, does PP ALWAYS attempt to generate new fromes when slowing down video in the timeline? When extra frames are available in the original video file, does PP try to get the extra frames from that file instead of generating new ones?

I recorded 2 video clips of the same scene. The camera was panning from right to left.
First video clip - recorded at 25 fps
second video clip - recorded at 50 fps
Both video clips recorded at the same panning speed of the same scene.
    1. If I import the 25 fps video into 25 fps timeline and slow it down by 50%, the exported video looks jerky.
    2. If I import the 50 fps video clip into 25 fps timeline, the exported video looks smooth motion.
    3. If I import the 50 fps video clip into 50 fps timeline, slow it down in the timeline by 50%, and export the video as 25 fps then the result is still smooth motion.
I've only done the experiment once and may have to repeat to be absolutely sure.

  • Workaround for compressor HDV to DVD field issue?

I need a work around for the field issue apparent when down-converting HDV to DVD.
The Bonsai method <http://www3.telus.net/bonsai/Welcome.html> will not work, as there is too much motion and a side effect of the "fastest" conversion is that it gives a 3-d ghosting effect on fast motion in the frame.
I can not convert to 720P60 or 480P, as FCP converts it to 30P and then doubles the frames, and the motion is jittery.
I could dump it to camera and then down-convert in camera, but I have heard this is not a great method either.
I have seen in another forum to save the HDV timeline in FCP as a HDV quicktime movie, and then import that into DVD studio pro and have it down-convert, but DVD studio pro says this is an "incompatible file".
How do I get 1080i HDV footage onto a DVD so that it looks acceptable?

I had a similar problem with HDV (1080i shot on Cannon HV-20) footage, looks great in post and terrible when converted (herringbone lines and too many artifacts.) I’ve successfully used the Bonsai method on another piece I did but the footage was shot on a HVX-200 at 720 24p and there were no “action” shots. I wasn’t as successful using the method using 1080i footage and it definitely didn’t help with the fast motion shots. I did a search in this forum on HD to SD and there are a lot of helpful hints and methods. I experimented with a lot of the suggestions but in the end I was able to produce very nice and acceptable results by doing the following:
1] I didn’t create an SD sequence; I exported the footage as a Quicktime movie (self contained) straight from my HDV sequence.
2] I dropped the Quicktime file into Compressor and selected 90-minute DVD Anamorphic Best 2-pass VBR. Running Compressor from Final Cut ties up your system as well as there seems to be a delay between the handoff from Final Cut to Compressor (running the latest 5.x version and 2.3.) Creating a Quicktime file frees your system and it’s debatable if you actually compress faster or take a hit on quality. I’ve tested both from Final Cut and using a Quicktime file and didn't see any real difference in quality.
3] Change the field dominance from Top to Progressive in the tab where you see 2-Pass VBR Best and also in the encoding tab (not in front of my system so I can’t recall the name or order of the icons). In the encoding tab you will notice it says “same as source.” The pull down will show you Top, Bottom, Progressive, Automatic…I tried them all and in various combinations and anything other than progressive in both tabs produced undesirable results.
4] The options for Fast, Good, Better and Best in the other encoding pull down sections are a matter of preference and patience. Selecting Best in all categories takes a really long time to compress (36 hours for a 9-minute piece using a Mac Pro 3.0GHz dual-core Intel with 4GB ram.) I ran tests using different combinations and found that selecting the default settings is decent and stepping each category up to the next level helped but not enough to warrant the long compression cycle to stick with Better across the board. When you do your testing, it’s best to use as little footage as possible or you will find yourself waiting too long to see the actual results. I used a 1-second (29 frames) shot of a girl twirling around, hair flying everywhere, and girls next to her using hula-hoop’s.
5] Use the sliding bar in the viewer to see the impact of your choices before submitting the job. To the right you will see the “original” footage and to the left you can see the results of your selection. You can move the bar across the footage to see (approximately) the end results.
6] One thing I did notice is that no matter what settings I use, the output is slightly darker (reds were deeper, skin tones were warmer and not as smooth), but hey, you are going from HDV to SD so it’s not going to be perfect.
Hope that helps and good luck.
    Kenny

  • Export HDV timeline to DV Stream

I need to export material from my HDV timeline to DV Stream. Will I loose any quality in this operation?

OK i did as you suggested and it worked.
The only problem is the colors went all out of whack.
There seems to be like a slight greenish tint to alot of the browns. I wish the canon hv20 could do a down convert directly from the HDV timeline.
I guess i'll just have to live with it.
It just that it makes me look bad color correction wise.

  • Moving clips en masse on timeline (with imported audio)

Here's what I want to do: I just arranged a group of clips on my timeline. I realized after I did this that they are in the wrong place, so I need to grab them all (there're about 15 in a row) and move them to another place on the timeline. The thing is, they need to inserted in-between a bunch of clips that are all smack together. So what I need to do is create a space between two of these clips and then paste my new collection of clips in that space.
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi James!
You don't need to make a space for them to drop into.
Select all the clip by holding down the shift key while you click on the first and last of the clips, then they will drag en masse to the desired location and make their own gap!
If that location is too far down the timeline to be seen, park them in the clips pane, move the timeline, then drag them to the desired position.Make sure sure you don't click anything or you will 'unbundle' them.
As to your second question, you just need to lock the audio to the playhead. Place the playhead at the point where you want the audio to stay in relation to the clip, go to Advanced menu and click on 'lock audio at playhead'. Now the audio will move with the clip.
