Update applied to Photoshop CS 4 now print to PDF crashes

I have Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended (11.0.2) installed on my system as well as Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (9.3.1). Recently the Adobe updater came up and wanted to apply an update to Photoshop (to 11.0.2) and ever since printing to PDF from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008 crashes every time. I have made no other changes to the system. I'm running Windows Vista Enterprise with SP2 with SQL Server 2008 (full install) and SQL Server 2005 (workstation components only). I was just printing database diagrams to PDF before this update and everything worked great multiple times. Now I when I print, the window pops up with the progress bar proceeding like usual. Then after a little bit of progress, SSMS crashes and the PDF completes with only part of the diagram in the file.
I get the following in the Windows application event log.

  • Asking Photoshop CS5 (Mac) to print a PDF file crashes Photoshop.

Photoshop crashes when I ask it to print a pdf.  Before I upgraded to a larger system hard drive, this issue did not exist.  Before the upgrade, I coud scan an item with Acrobat X Pro (Mac), but it would not print correctly.  I found that if I opened the Acrobat generated pdf in Photoshop and then flattened the image, I could ask Photoshop to convert the document into a pdf and it would print with Acrobat without a problem.  Now Photoshop just crashes when the pdf output is requested.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If Photoshop is crashing you need to seek help in the Photoshop forum, since Acrobat isn't involved. Good luck!

  • Printing to PDF Crashes InDesign, Word, Publisher and more

    Hello,
It was recommended by someone in the InDesign forums that I post my issue here, as my problem seems to be spanning through all programs that are capable of printing to PDF.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I have 8gb of DDR2 ram in my machine at work. We are running Creative Suite 4.
I am a prepress designer, so much of my day is spent taking customers files, and converting them into printable PDF files for our machines. My problem is that throughout the day, printing to a PDF will completely freeze my computer. In InDesign, when printing to a PDF file, I will get the progress bar that says, "downloading font, flattening image, etc." Usually, when the progress bar gets to "Downloading Procset," a window comes up that allows me to choose a name and location to print my PDF to. Occasinally, InDesign will completely freeze up at this point, with no option to save. The only thing I can do at this point it end the program through the task manager. When this happens, it also affects Word, Publisher, etc. I can get all the way to the print dialog box, but as soon as I click on Properties, the entire thing freezes up. Sometimes this issue starts from InDesign as described, and sometimes it originates in Word, Publisher, etc.
Even after closing and reopening the programs, I cannot print to a PDF. My only solution is to completely restart my computer. I have been doing this 4-8 times a day for 2-3 months now.
I did some digging, and found that once the PDF printing fails, it puts a document in my PDF printer queue called "Local Downlevel Document." It shows the status of this file as Spooling, and I am not able to delete or cancel the job. It's properties show as 0 byes, 0 pages, datatype raw, and processor Winprint.
I've gotten suggestions to Export to PDF or print to postscript and distill. While these fixes work after the PDF printing fail, it still does not return functionality to any of my other programs that require PDF printing.
Another issue that arises when this happens, is that I cannot print any PDF file to any physical printer. When I open a PDF file, and click print, it instantly freezes. This, as well, is fixed by restarting.
There is no pattern to when this happens. It seems to be completely at random.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

This is a user to user forum, not Adobe support
That means that the only way someone is going to be able to help is if they have experience with your software and how Acrobat intereacts
I can't help, but hopefully someone will come along and read your message who is able to help
I do not see that you posted your exact version and update level for Acrobat
Since Win7 64bit is still fairly new, you MAY have a problem of not having the latest Acrobat update... and you may also have something like an out of date video driver

There's a list of printers that support AirPrint, the native mechanism for printing from iOS, here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
I don't see your printer on the list, but check with HP to see if they have a firmware update that would enable AirPrint. If not, HP offers an app that enables printing to some of their other wireless printers. Third-party printing apps such as PrintCentral are also available. All such apps have limitations, so check them out thoroughly before you pay for any such app.
You can also route the printing through your computer. If you have a Mac, Printopia might be worth a look:
    http://www.ecamm.com/mac/printopia/
Fingerprint is another option that is available for both Mac OS X and Windows system. You could also consider an AirPrint-capable print server. Lantronix makes a couple of models, including one that supports a USB printer:

  • Large format printing to PDF errors

    Hi -
I'm creating 36" x 90" posters in Illustrator CS4 on Windows 7 and suddenly cannot print full-size to PDF.   I simply get the big red X that says, "Can't print Illustration".   Not exactly a helpful error message.
I've done it in the past, so losing the capability with no apparent explaination is frustrating.   After some reinstalling and trial/error, I've discovered that the max width (or height) is now 72".  Interestingly enough, older files the same size ALSO cannot now print to PDF.  (I can SAVE to PDF, I can't PRINT to PDF.  Printing brings a smaller file size I can email to my printer...)
Interestingly enough, saving the file as a Postscript and opening it in Photoshop also exhibits the same problem.
I have also isolated the problem to this particular setup/computer because it works like a champ at home (which is how I solved the problem this time) with the same OS/CS versions.
Is there something I'm missing?  Some setting that was inadvertently changed?
    TIA

The size of the PDf can be directly related to it's content. ie: A PDF file containing only black text may be 100k, where as if you add an 8-bit tiff file, it may jump to 3 Mgs.
When you create your PDF (if size does matter!), you can adjust many areas by Optimizing it. (You can also do this with Distiller and the PS or EPS route). Use the "Advanced" menu, and use PDF optimizer to lower quality of the file. ie: turn on Jpg compression and adjust the compression ratio to your desired level. You can also downsample rasterized art (not vector!) by turning on downsampling. I'm not sure if there is an action you can create to do this or not. Never tried batching in Acrobat.
P.S. After optimizing it, DO NOT resave. The Optimized file will already be saved. Saving it again, removes much of the optimizing you just did.
Also, Acrobat 7 files tend to be a little larger than 6!

I hope someone out here can help me.  I'm a Creative Cloud user.  I have been using the 64-bit version of Photoshop 13.0.x on my system successfully for several months now.  I have Windows 7, 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge) core i7 processor, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB Hard Drive, and am using an NVIDIA GeForce 670 video card.... so my system has plenty of processing power.  Several nights ago, my Adobe application manager pops up on start up (as normal whenever there's app updates to be done) and says there's an update available for Photoshop (version 13.1.2, I think.. or something close to it, anyway) and Bridge.  So, as normal, I apply the updates... Everything completely successfully according to the Applicatino Manager.  However, when I try to start photoshop after the update, I get this window that pops up immediately upon double-clicking the Photoshop 64-bit icon on my desktop: "Adobe Photoshop cannot run on this computer because this version of Photoshop requires Windows 7 or later."  All I can do is "X" out the box to make it go away, so I did.  Weird because obviously I have Windows 7 and all of my other software works great on my system, and I have Lightroom 4.3, other Adobe stuff, Serif software, ACDSee, etc... and I get no problems out of ANY of them running on my officially licensed version of Windows 7.  So just for the heck of it, I uninstalled Photoshop completely and then reinstalled it using the Adobe Application Manager.  It installs version 13.0, which then allows me to open and use Photoshop as normal.  I proceed to "check for updates" from within the program, and it takes me to 13.0.2 I believe.  I can use Photoshop as normal after that.   Here's what I think is funny... I can check for updates to my heart's content after updating to 13.0.x.  The program thinks there's no updates available after 13.0.x.  The only way my system knows there's a later version out there is if I power down my system and restart it.  Then and only then will Adobe Application Manager come up and tell me there's an update available (13.1.2) which, if I chooose to install (and I did), takes me back to the error that I mentioned earlier: "Adobe Photoshop cannot run on this computer becuse this version of Photoshop requires Windows 7 or later".  Soooo with all of this said... DOES ANYONE know how the updated version of Photoshop (13.1.2) for Creative Cloud Subscribers checks to see if it's running on a Windows 7 system?  For whatever reason, it doesn't think I have Windows 7 after updating to it, and I'm stuck!  I know if I contact Adobe Support, they're going to want to uninstall ALL of my Adobe software of which I have alot, and then reinstall everything... and quite frankly, I think all that is a bunch of crap!  It's plain and simple... Photoshop works BEFORE the update, and will not open due to this error AFTER the update, so there's some issue with the updating procedure that causes Photoshop to not recognize my Windows 7 system, and I just pray that SOMEBODY out there might be able to help me change some setting on my system that will cause Photoshop 13.1.2 to actually work!
UPDATE: I decided to check the 32-bit version of 13.1.2, and it works!  So it looks like this error is limited to the 64-bit version.  That just makes no sense at all to me.

  • EPSON printer update v2.3.1:  color controls now dimmed @ print dialog box

I have lost the ability to control color in the Print/Print Settings dialog box after this update. The Ink tab is dimmed and set to "Color," the Color Settings tab is also dimmed and set to "Off (No Color Adjustment)," and the Advanced tab brings up only information about the Colorsync profile. The graphic file (Photohop) I'm printing from is a grayscale file.
There is no difference in the Print dialog box between having Photoshop manage the colors or having the Printer do it.
My concern is that the printer will now be consuming color ink, but the actual prints appear to be using only the matte black.
Anybody else run into this? Should I be concerned?
    Thanks

From PHOTOSHOP (CS4) In the printer driver menu, the COLOR MATCHING pulldown shows the choices are grayed out. But go to the PRINT SETTINGS pulldown. There you should be able to select BLACK/COLOR Ink, color settings if appropriate (VIVID etc)...
Apparently not all programs gray out the COLOR MATCHING boxes - a demoed a RIP that does not do this but it has other issues (ImageNext2.1).
Also CS4 has the ability to completely disable color management (used for printer profiling), but some apps cannot do this with this driver (ImageNest2.1, DataColor Spyder3Print)

I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

Just updated the latest Epson software printer update from Apple. Now all my prints look solarized. How do I get rid of the new update and go back to the perfect prints I had before? Help please. Wasting ink and paper at the moment!!!!!!
I have tried the printer with my laptop (not updated) and everything is fine. It's just the beautiful 27" Imac that can no longer print.

Might be a corrupted printer preference file ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go
Move the com.apple.PrinterPrefs.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac, restart the printer...
