Update, Restore, Reformat - it all either hangs, "fails", or is unreadable.

My husband reformatted the iPod to PC (he didn't read the prompt or realize that reformatting the device would erase it - Grr...). He had always used it on a flat panel iMac running 10.2.8. We also have a laptop now with Tiger, which has never run the iPod.
I thought all I'd need to do to fix his iPod is to reformat it back to Mac, then reload the songs from iTunes. I started out using the laptop. I reset, ran disk utility (sometimes it couldn't repair the volume - it said "error -39" once, several times it said "failed upon exit", and sometimes it could), restored (sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't), tried to update (it wouldn't), used firewire port and tried USB port, recharging, sometimes it was recognizable, sometimes it was an "unreadable disk", and the closest I came to success was about 1600 of 1800 songs, at which point it hung overnight (two days in a row) and I quit.
My next thought was that it may not be compatible with Tiger, so I spent all day today trying it with the flat panel on 10.2.8. I went through all of the motions, but the iPod never would appear in iTunes. Updater and restore never worked on the flat panel. Restore would hang without finishing, so I reset over and over again. I tried firewire and also USB on this machine, too.
I must be i-missing something simple here. I'm beginning to feel like an i-moron! : )
I've been poring through the discussion boards and manuals for three days now, and the articles have taught me how to reset and restore, but the end result is that I still have an empty iPod.
I really don't have a preference as to which of the Macs we dedicate to music, but the Macs have an external HD with lots of free space, so I don't want to use it on PC mode.
Any advice?
Thank you so much!

Hello,
Please read this first
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
b. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
Ok, now please connect with your Pc first
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
If fails then
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • Windows update causes all programs to fail

Just recovered from windows update using system restore. After the update, no programs would run and gave an error something like "cannot access this program - do you want to remove it". The updates are the 7 most recent updates for windows 7.
We have windows 7 pro sp1.

    Hi cisz,
""Installation failure." (Windows failed to install update.)"
It seems that some updates has not been installed correctly ,please check for any failed updates from the update history (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\View update history)
Please take the following steps to have a troubleshoot and then check for update manually again (Manually create a restore point before checking for updates):
1.If there is any third party antivirus software installed ,please turn them off temporarily .
2.Run the built-in troubelshoot tool to have a diagnostic :
    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\All Categories\Windows Update
    3.Clear the update cache :
    net stop wuauserv
    cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
    ren Download Download.old
    net start wuauserv
After all the updates installed ,please restart the machine to make them take effect .If there is still any update installed failed, it is recommended to manually download it and install it to have a check .
    Best regards

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Can you start Firefox in [[Safe mode]] ?
You can also do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can initially skip the step to create a new profile, that may not necessary for this issue.

Next time, when you have important material in only one place, back it up.

Once I updated to OS 6 all my Calendar entries from the early part of the year disappeared. I need them as a record of PD activities how do I restore the earlier entries. The new future activities are there just the old ones have disappeared.

Well, that would depend on what calendar you are using.
If you are simply relying on the calendar on the device, well, that's not very smart.  Restoring from backup should put everything back.
If the calendar is synced with another service, like Google, iCloud, Exchange, do the entires still exist there?
If the calendar is synced with Outlook or iCal on your computer, do the entries still exist there?

  • 5s update/restore fail using itunes

i backed up my 5s with itunes so i could update my phone from 7.1 to 8.3; The update/restore failed; I have tried repeatedly; my phone is not functional, and I can't even restore to factory settings; In troubleshooting I have done the following: used most recent itunes,  disabled antivirus software  -still failing. My computer is running windows xp -is that why it is failing?  I don't know what to do. I need to get my phone back to functioning.

The answer to your question comes directly from the TS3694 article you attached above:
Error 1015: This error is typically caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple. This error can also occur when an unauthorized modification of the iOS has occurred and you are now trying to restore to an authorized, default state.

  • I've done an update on 7/25/11 as requested by itunes since I've done the update I've lost all my music and videos; also I've lost my USB drivers. What can I do to restore my 2nd Gen Ipod touch to factory?

I've done an update on 7/25/11 as requested by Itunes. Since I've done the update I've lost all my music, videos and icons. I also can't connect to any PC via the USB port. What can I do to restore my 2nd Generation Ipod Touch back to factory?

I also have a 2nd generation iPod and when the new version was being advertised on the home page, I clicked on it. And I saw that the update was compatible with iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation, iPad 1 and 2, and all the iPhones. But it wasn't compatible with iPod touch 2nd generation. So you downloaded an update which wasn't compatible with your iPod. I'm sorry.
