I have seen so much response about the Mountain Lion update slowing down computers. I am updating from Mac OS x 10.6.8. What can I do to ensure the upgrade will go fine? Do I unplug my external hard drive before installing, or keep it plugged in?
Also, I have the 08 version of iWork. Will this cause problems for the update? Can I update this AFTER I update the processor?Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac -
HT6058 Will this new update slow down my iphone 4 even more than the last update?
Will this new update slow down my iphone 4 even more than the last update?
Thats a hard question to answer. The iPhone 4 has older technology than newer models which can cause the device to lag. Depending on what data and settings you have on the device, it could run slower. I would probably make sure to constantly close apps in multitasking and possible think about restoring the device as a new device. Make sure to backup your data prior to the restore

Wifi Working OK, MBP after 10.4.8 update SLOW!
Hi all!
Right after I upgraded to 10.4.8 the Airport connectiom on my MBP is really slow. I used to get 700kbps speeds, but know i´m at 45kbps!!!
I tried the "delete preferences" tip found on these boards, but it did not work in my user account.
I then created a new user account, and Airport connected at full speed. It has to be some software issue, so i tried to delete all prefs I could find in my original account regarding Airport or network, but it still hasn´t improve.
I must say i have never had any issues with Airport on my MBP, it has always worked flawlessy until right after the update.
Any ideas??? thank you.two ideas that have already been mentioned:
- do you use coconut wifi? quit it / delete it al a startup item (preferences -> user -> select yourself -> startup items (that's how it might be called in English^^)
- try switching the router's channel (might be helpfull to use a cable-conncetion while doing that): load your router's setuppage (usually the component's name such as fritz.box or (in my case) ssx553, or try your IP and replace the final digit with a 1) than go to wifi, channels. Switching it to "auto" helped in my case, a friend of mine had good experiences with channel 11.
Hope this will help (I am NO computer expert and pretty new to the mac^^)

9.3.2 update slows Windows Explorer?
I installed the latest update to Adobe Acrobat (9.3.2) on April 26, 2010. Ever since, Windows Explorer (in Windows 7 Professional on an Intel Core2 Duo P9500 2.53GHz 64-bit with 4.00 GB RAM Lenovo T400) has been incredibly slow. When I try to navigate through my drives, Explorer hangs for minutes until it evenutally opens the file I've selected?
Could the two be related?IPhoto orders photos using a SQLite database structure - much more up to date and much more powerful than an antique file based organization. If you do not want the organizational and search power of a SQL database then the answer is really simple. Do not use it and go back to your old fashioned methods. No one forces you to use iPhoto
As to why? The event sort is wrong and you need to set it to the sort you want. View menu ==> event sort

Latest Update slows down all activity
My recent automatic software update included an update to Safari. I can now have favorite sites show on screen among other things. What I really like is that my Safari browser is as slow as any PC product I have used in the past few years. Of course I would really prefer my Mac to work like a Mac. Is there some way for me to undo this latest and greatest upgrade?
Unless you have a Time Machine or bootable clone backup the answer is no.
Have a read of this thread and try the suggestions.

Any security update slow-down problem occuring ???
hi all,
My macbk has slowed to a crawl on the net. connecting from one site to another takes up to 20 seconds. I've done permissions / onyx/ scripts/ reset safari & camino /cleared browser caches and each time it speeds up a bit but within a few minutes online it's slow again. hangs up initially at "looking for..." in the bottom bar and shows highlighted bar hung right before "www". OR at the "go to" / "contacting" stage at the same WWW
The only thing I can think that I did at about the time it began slowing down was , using software update (which I rarely use- normally download directly from the apple site, but got momentarily lazy!).
My Techtool pro is 4.2.1 and won't run on my intel apparently - or so it says in the dialogue box and when I try to download and install the incremental update it says it can't find where to install. so I am stuck with out it at the moment.
If it weren't so rare I would think I had a WORM. but that IS rare on a mac I think.
so thinking about possible linked problems with that security update.
anyone heard of any problems ?
I do have applecare, so if all else fails I can call them I guess

Win 7 update "slow performance" relating to the font cache
For those of you having font, slow print and/or PDF problems on Win 7 (or Win2008 Server), both x86 and x64:
I just came across an MS support posting about a hotfix that might *** emphasis MIGHT *** be of interest to you.
The specific reason is that the hotfix includes an update to our old friend "fntcache.dll" that FM definitely does use.
Disclaimer: I am not an Adobe representative. I do not speak for Adobe. I have no specific knowledge whether this might indeed affect FM or of which version(s) of FM it might apply to. I have not tested this myself. If you install this hotfix you are completely on your own. As always, please ensure you have adequate backups.
IMPORTANT NOTE: please do take notice of the "Known Issue" section in the description, saying "After you install ... a second hotfix for an updated version of another driver may be necessary".
If any of you do test this, would you kindly post back here with your results either way.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2505438
SheilaAdobe applications do not use the interface for which specified hot fix is designated for. It may fix Internet Explorer 9 printing, but not any printing or PDF creation from FrameMaker or any other Adobe applications.

ITunes iPod update slow, LaCie drive sputters
I have my iTunes music on a LaCie 500GB external Firewire drive. The library file is on my Mac. When I try to update my iPod using iTunes 7, the drive seems to "click off" after each song, then seems to restart itself for the next song. The updating process is extraordinarily and unacceptably slow (1 song every 30 seconds) when the iTunes "Devices" screen is showing. The updating process is faster (5-10 songs every 30 seconds) when I make another screen (e.g., the Library) visible, but the LaCie drive still "clicks off" every now and then. This behavior seems new with iTunes 7 and is extremely annoying. What's the problem?
follow up... during a second round of updates, the problem did not occur. Very odd.

Chart update slows down...
Hello,
I've got a transparent picture control over a chart. The picture is
used to place a horizontal line across the chart using a mouse click.
It all works fine until the chart is filled and it has to start
scrolling. Then it really slows down.
If I move the picture so that it isn't overlapping the chart then the
chart runs at a good speed again.
Is there anyway of speeding things up? Will the chart history length
affect this?
Regards,
Adrian.

Charts, like most other controls have more work to do when overlapped.
An overlapped chart can redraw just the small area where the new data is
drawn until it fills up and starts scrolling. At that point, the chart
must redraw the entire chart. One thing you can do is change the update
mode from strip chart to either scope chart or sweep chart. You can
also make the overlay be optional, so that
it doesn't pay the overlap
price except when it needs to.

We have two brand new 13" Macbook Pros. With 10.6.7 they were very snappy in getting web pages on our Airport network. After updating to 10.6.8 we've experienced slow and stopped performance in accessing web pages. Operating these two computers side by side, one would slow or stop while the other could operate and then the computers would trade results. Obviously it wasn't our network having a problem. We reinstalled 10.6.7 via our install disks and were able to immediately have the snappy performance we had prior to installing 10.6.8.
One of the computers was accidentally updated to 10.6.8 only to experience the slow stopping performance again. We again reinstalled 10.6.7 in order to install the snappy operation. We cannot update to 10.7 because Quicken for Mac 2006 is vital to our business, Quicken Essentials only operates on one file and is useless to us.
We had the same experience with an older 15 " 2.2 gh MacBook Pro.
Is there an explanation to this problem?Try this:

Mountain lion update slowed down my macbook pro
hey guys,
I just updated to mountain lion
however, after the installation, my macbook pro has been noticably slow.
slow booting, slow when operating installed programs, chrome/safari got slowed down as well.
Also it freezes for couple of seconds and i was wondering why.
If any of u r experiencing same problems or know how to fix it please kindly let me know!
Thank you!Have tried everything possible, repairing permissions etc to no avail.
You haven't tried everything possible or you would have a solution. If you tried the most extreme possible solution (erasing the hard drive, then reinstalling the system and nothing else) and still had the same problems, you would have discovered that you almost certainly have a hardware problem. For some solutions that you haven't tried yet, I'll refer you to the same two links I referred sylee48 to.
As for that article, that's an extremely unprofessional piece of writing. They publish - as if they were fact - the conclusions of untrained, non-technical users who do not have the necessary expertise to make such conclusions. And they concluded that these were bugs that Apple should be working on.
In fact, this may be one of the smoothest upgrades I've seen in a while. (Boy-oh-boy, you should have seen the screaming here for the Snow Leopard and Lion upgrades! It's positively peaceful in this forum compared to that.) -
Does the most recent OS X v10.6 update slow down your computer?
When I first upgraded to Snow Leopard, it felt like Christmas: I got disk space back and my Mac seemed faster and more responsive.
But after I installed the latest updates (I believe it was OS X v10.6.2 and a firmware upgrade), things have not been so rosy:
- there is a noticeable delay when I modify the volume via keyboard keys, this used to instantaneous, now it's like a 1 second lag
- switching applications takes longer, balking at the animation of switching between spaces
- apps in Fusion jam up much more frequently
As far as I can tell, my usage patterns haven't changed at all, and I really did start noticing it from my first use of new updates.
Is anyone else experiencing something similar? I'm not too sure how to diagnose and fix this. It's too bad, because I was really enjoying the performance improvements from Snow Leopard, and now the responsiveness benefit seems gone.perropicante wrote:

Here are some fixes for general slowness that have worked for others. Ignore any you already have tried and any you don't want to try. Try the possible fixes in the order you prefer.
1. If you are running iAntivirus, then uninstall it.
2. Try [resetting your PRAM/NVRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US]. If everything isn't fixed, then follow the [steps here including resetting your SMC if necessary|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543].
3. Look in User > Library > StartupItems and in System > Library > StartupItems. Move whatever you find in them to the desktop to see if your problem is resolved. You can move whatever you want back one at a time to test which, if any, is your problem.
4. Use [Preferential Treatment|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22790] to repair your user preferences.
5.
a. Create a new user
b. Test apps to see that they work with no crashing.
c. Drag your data and other needed things (e.g., mail) (not your whole home folder) into their proper places in your new user home folder. Use [this guide|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to know what to drag.
d. Re-enter your app preferences if you are going to keep using the new user.
e. If you want to use the old user name, then delete the old account; recreate it; and move everything back to the original locations.
f. You will need to fix the permissions, app settings, etc.
6. Go back to 10.6. You can do so simply by reinstalling Snow over Snow as in doing an upgrade install.
7. Reinstall .6.1 and .6.2 using [only the combo updater|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959]. -
