UPDATED: Changes to your Skype online status

If you use Skype on a mobile client, we’ve recently made changes to the way your Skype status is shown to your contacts. Now, when you are offline on your desktop client and not active on your mobile client for five minutes, your status will be changed from Online to Away.

After playing with the status a bit the last two weeks, I found out the situation is even worse than I thought. In addition to the status being handled incorrectly by Skype, it also matters 'to whom' it is displayed!
Example: A person X had a Windows Phone which was connected to the network and ready to receive calls/messages. The Skype app was of course not running as the Windows Phone uses WNS to be online. Skype even made it explicitly so that its Windows Phone app is suspended behind the lock screen. So the correct status should be 'online'. - Test 1: We then used a Skype (desktop version) and noticed person X was listed as 'away'. So incorrect, but at least this seems to match new announced behavior. We send a message to be sure and it arrived instantly.
- Test 2: We took a Windows Phone, and looked at the status of this same person X. It was flagged as 'offline'. Obviously incorrect. We send a message and arrived, indicating the connection to Skype servers was all fine.
- Test 3: We then took an iPhone, and looked at the status of this person X. Same as on Windows Phone, the person was listed as 'offline'. Again, send a message and arrived. Person X then started the Skype app, and behold the status changed to 'online'. Person X closed the app again, and the person became 'offline' again.
=> Since it is impossible to keep the Skype app running on Windows Phone, this means this person X will be listed as offline to mobile users 24/7 despite being able to get calls/messages.
=> Also so it seems mobile apps don't know the new 'away' status and map this to 'offline'?
Now, I could be wrong, but I cannot recall ever to have seen an 'away' status in Skype for iOS or Skype for Windows Phone. So I'm suspecting certain mobile devices indeed just don't support an 'away' status. Perhaps this will be solved with an future app update?
But regardless ...
=> So two different persons will get on occasion a different status displayed for the same individual at the same time!
And of course, just to reiterate, this is on top of the original issue, where it is impossible to see a difference between a mobile user who is connected to a network and a mobile user who isn't (in a plane, out of coverage, phone switched off, etc.). So really, Skype goes from bad to worse here ...
Currently as it is now, the 'green/yellow/gray light' presence indicator is pretty much just a random set of pixels without any consistent meaning. This means Skype is kind of like traditional calls and SMS. You can send a SMS/MMS, but have no guarantee it is read, and with calls you just have to try and see if you can reach the other person. So unless they fix this to pre-February logic, I recommend just removing the whole presence indicator as it will only confuse people.

    When reviewing the product description for the Freetalk Office Phone, it was unclear to me whether or not the phone will work with your Skype Online Number.  For example, if someone calls my online number then will the Freetalk Office Phone ring??  Also if I call someone from the Freetalk Office Phone then will they see my Skype Online Number on the caller ID?

    Hi, If you buy a Skype phone and an online number anyone who calls it either from a landline, mobile or Skype ID, the phone will ring. If you are signed on on another device be it a computer or IPhone app all devices will ring. As long as the Skype phone is switched on and has Internet connection it will be online 24 x 7.   • Re-directing a Telstra number to a Skype online nu...

    We have a Telstra redirection in place from a Telstra number to a Skype online number. When someone dials the Telstra number from a landline, the call is redirected to the Skype online number - no problems.
    However, when someone dials the Telstra number from an Optus mobile, they get the "Optus regrets this number is disconnected" message.
    We have contacted Telstra and they have advised that we must contact the service provider of the number we are redirecting to i.e.. the Skype online number. Hence, I am contacting you for help. Please advise how to fix this. Thanks

    Can you dial the Skype Online Number directly from an Optus mobile?  And, is it safe to assume that the Skype Online Number you are using is an Australian number and not a number in some other country?  It is interesting that the recording you received when your Telstra landline number is dialed from an Optus mobile is from Optus.  This may indicate the problem is not with Telstra or with Skype's Australian partner providing the links to the Australian telephone network, but somewhere with Optus. 
    You have posted in the Community forums, where Skype users try to help other Skype users.  Some Skype employees monitor the forums, and may join in the discussions.  If you are still having problems, you may want to click on the "Support" link at the top of the page, open a support ticket with Skype, and provide details - for example, the telephone numbers in question (an Optus mobile number, the Telstra landline number, and your Skype Online Number) along with an explanation of the problem.

    There is a serious issue raised in the parallel thread, which is critical for many people: "Status keeps changing from invisible to online" (initiated on ‎16-11-2014 by b.agne, Mac section). In short, when starting using a device, the Skype status changing from "invisible" to "online" - sometimes just for a moment, though enough for others to notice you. These affects very much any type of devices. I am sure the issue has already led to multiple personal crisises and potentially financial losses due to buseness partnership issues (I came close to that myself, and now use anything but Skype for business). The question is: WHY the issue is completely ignored by Skype, Microsoft and expert comunity? Please post the solution if anybody knows how to fix the issue, or suggest how to make Microsoft to know that it should be fixed. Kind regard...

    Hi, I also have the same issue. I change the status to Invisible and a later on it is already as "Online", without having even touched/opened Skype. The only way that I see this may happen is that I have the app installed on the smartphone, but before it never had this issue, but from some month ago it started. Any correction or suggestion to work around this issue? Regards

    iPhoto is Apple's included program to manage your photo's and pictures.
    It receives updates over time with Software updates and new machine or iLife purchases.
    When iPhoto gets updated or a newer version is used, it may alter iPhoto support files, but newer iPhoto versions usually always compatible with older files which it then updates.
    If you used a newer iPhoto on your iPhoto support files, then they got altered to the newer format, older iPhoto versions can't read the older format.
    Somewhere along the line you somehow got a older version of iPhoto on your computer, you need to fine the newer version of iPhoto (not this photo manager, sounds like another program)
    Or somewhere along the line you used a newer iPhoto version (like on another Mac) and it altered the iPhoto support files on your older version of iPhoto.
    So the key here is to find the newest version of iPhoto and use that to access your iPhoto support files.
    If you didn't access your iPhoto support files from another Mac, then you should have the newer iPhoto version on your computer.
    Once you find it, and get it in the Dock, you should remove the older iPhoto version from your computer to prevent this from happening again.
    Lastly, if the newer version of iPhoto is somehow gone off your computer, you should be able to get a copy off the latest OS X install disk or iLife using a free program called Pacifist.

  • I cannot open itunes. I updated the software yesterday but it stopped working half way though use and now every time i try openeing it it comes up with the message 'allow programme to make changes to your computer?' and on clicking yes doesnt do anything.

    On using my latop yesterday, i opened itunes and  it gave me the option to update to the new software, which i was happy to do. I went through all the stages on installing the software and it opened up for use.
    On using the software to download new music, i found it was freezing quite a lot and just in general wouldnt work. I closed the prgramme after having to use task manager as it wouln't respond. I then re-opened the programme and it came up with the message 'Do you wish to allow this prgramme to make changes to your computer?' i automatically said yes and expected itunes to open however, it didn't. I ran through troubleshoot compatibility however the issue found said 'Incompatibe application' to which i didnt know what it meant.
    I've tried everything to make it work. Re-starting the computer, going on unistalling the programme and repairing it but, nothings worked.
    I dont want to unistall the programme because i dont want to lose my music. I need a way to fix the programme without unistalling it.
    Can anyone help??

    I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
    You can't "copy" your photos to the "library manager", there is just no way to any such thing.
    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    I had exactly the same problem and just chatted to a Skype Customer Service agent for about half an hour where they made me jump through incredible trobleshooting hoops that any trained money would know was not addressing the real issue. Eventually they admitted that you cannot use 00 to replace the + when calling a Skype number from a landline or mobile. My Skype number works fine if I make the call to it from within the Skype dialler but not from other phones dialling to that number Internationally. Also on my iphone I held down the 0 to produce the + sumbol and typed in the rest of my Internationa number and even that didn't work. This is a pretty horrendous major issue and I believe that anyone who has paid for a Skype number that needs to receive calls to it from overseas needs to be reimbursed or this issue MUST be fixed immediately. It's completely crazy and unnaceptable. Quite a con!

    In all my iDevices with IOS 8.1 they have a problem to stay online. After the lid of iPad Air is closed the Skype will go to offline status within some seconds. Same problem with iPad 2, iPad Mini and iPhone 4S. Only iPhone 4 with IOS 7 is working normaly.
    Is there some setting which I have change to get Skype to stay online all the time, when it is loaded on background?

    To resolve this issue, on your Apple device, go to Settings, General, Background App Refresh. Make sure the refresh is turned ON and Skype app in the same screen below is set to ON. If you have the main refresh switch OFF or the Skype app set to OFF, the app will go offline as it cannot synch your profile (status) to the server in real time.
    You can control and set other apps to automatic refresh or turn them off individually in the same screen.
