Updated safari makes mac os 10.4.11 crash

I am running 10.4.11, on an intel macbook pro, and updated safari recently to the most recent version, 4.0.5 I believe.
As of yesterday, even just opening Safari brings my entire computer to a screeching halt. Not only does Safari not open, but when I attempt to quit it, or force quit it, the whole operating system freezes up. Spinning pinwheel and all.
Once I restart, I am now using a different browser, but I wish Safari would work as it used to! It doesn't seem possible to un-install it, but is there some way to find out if I've done something or unintentionally downloaded something that's causing this harm? Again, even trying to open Safari to check things out isn't an option.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Thank you Carolyn,
I can find a file, Safari.crash.log, though I'm not sure what to make of what is in it. This seems to be the most recent section:

• Just updated Safari on MacBook Pro and it now crashes and hangs. It will not function!

My macbook updated Safari tonight only to render the program inoperable. It hangs and freezes and shuts down. Takes FOREVER to load.

Hi...
See if you can get Safari to stay open long enough to do this...
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferrences then select the Security tab.
Deselect:  Enable plug ins
Quit then relaunch Safari. If it doesn't crash, you need to troubleshoot > Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If you can't resolve the issue, post a crash report...
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

Hello 2skhatri,
While researching the issue you are experiencing I found an article that I feel can help out in this situation.
It is called Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3230.
This section in particular
Manually uninstall third-party add-ons
If the software doesn't have an uninstall feature, quit Safari and try manually removing the third-party add-on files. These files are usually installed in one or more of the following locations:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
/Library/Input Methods/
/Library/InputManagers/
/Library/ScriptingAdditions
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
~/Library/Input Methods/
~/Library/InputManagers/
~/Library/ScriptingAdditions
The first four locations listed are in the root-level Library on your hard disk, not the user-level Library in your Home folder. The tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library.
Take care,
Sterling

• HT1338 Update Safari on iPad/ best way not to crash? - eMail Overload

My Safari often crashes, even though I only have maybe 3 to 4 tabs open. (This is even after a factory reset to new restore as new with only 2 apps installed. So no memory is being used on anything.) And I'm wondering do I need to update it separately or is that automatically done with the update to the iPad? I'm on top of cleaning the cookies and cachet, along w/ deleting history, etc on a reg basis, at least every 3wks.. I do have a lot of bookmarks, I imported from other browsers, and, I've been deleting those since I've discovered the crash is my error not apples. it also had the prob going from a 3rd gen to an air....so...any suggestions on stabilizing this, that I'm overlooking? I appreciate it.
Also, I have several  emailboxes that aren't always getting their mail (or the mail will come a few days later) ...my primary inbox, says something like 4k msgs, & I feel paralyzed by the #, I do keep chiseling away! but I need help .. these aren't all junk messages either, in fact most of them are not junk messages, they need to be filed, and they need to be glanced at and then discarded or fiiled or rarely replied to. But I've got the iPad set to only sync back 3mo, (I figure I'll handle it in chunks or the desktop)  & I find that my mail is crashing, and that it will often get stuck, as I'm doing searches and trying to mass edit & move. Any suggestions on organization, apps, settings to accommodate the problem?
All appreciated,
Blessings,
KellyS1709

Bugs, by definition, affect everybody, all the time. I'm just not seeing 10 million plus users all complaining about this and, believe me, they would be.
The progress bar can freeze up for any number of different reasons, with who perhaps to blame stretched out all the way from your iPad to your network to your ISP to the net itself to the server that you're connecting to.
As for best way to proceed, boilerplate follows:
A more or less standard sequence of steps is laid out in your User's Guide which you should follow in those cases when either your iPad or an app isn't behaving as it should. They sort of mirror 'The Three R's (Restart, Reset, & Restore) that you use for iPod troubleshooting, with a few extra iPad-specific things added in to the list.
Others here may just print out various parts of that list in their responses. I prefer instead to direct you to p. 170 of your Guide, in the Tips & Troubleshooting section. The directions there will start you out from the quickest and easiest first step, which will often be all you need to do, all the way to your atomic blast fix of totally restoring the iOS and all contents in your iPad.
You can call AppleCare, and they will probably have you do the same things. Or, you can take it I to a Genius Bar, and they will also go through the same steps. Needless to say, if you work through the whole process without being able to correct your problem, then you've pretty much shot your bolt and will have to start talking to Apple or the app developers for a resolution.

• Safari makes me NOT want to get a Mac

I have a friend with a Mac who likes to tempt me into switching from windows to Mac. I've always looked on Mac with admiration. However, my experience with Safari has reinforced all the reasons why I haven't switched.
Like everything Apple, it's immaculately styled. The top sites and history flow are very cool. The UI is nice. Love the bubble search highlight. The Aqua buttons, the blue highlight around the active control, all are elegant and just right and show once again how windows is just ugly (though it has improved with Vista and 7).
But feature-wise, it just doesn't compare to other browsers, such as Opera or Firefox. It's closer to chrome, which is a much newer program. But it's not close technically to chrome -- chrome is much more stable with its one process per tab model, is very fast to start, and fast at everything, and doesn't chew up CPU inexplicably while doing nothing.
Safari doesn't even have simple features like restore tabs on startup, default zoom level. It remembers passwords but it only seems to remember one password for each site. If you log in with several different login / passwords it only remembers one.
Then there is Apple's penchant for dictating what its users do. Earlier, Apple flirted with tabs on top. People complained, some b/c they just don't like it, others b/c they had some problem with how it was implemented. So Apple put it back on bottom, no options, rather than refining it and making it an option. chrome, incidentally, has made tabs on top work supremely well.
You may say it's not fair to judge Apple by its Safari for windows, but I see a lot of performance and stability issues on the Safari for Mac group too. The common response seems to be to tell people to clean up their system, which is rather funny. Here I thought only Windows suffers from OS rot.
And it's been months since Safari has been updated. I'm still waiting for the high CPU use while in gmail fix.
I expect Apple to pay more attention to its software because, let's face it, Mac users don't have as many choices in software, so Apple is a major software supplier for Macs. Furthermore, since itunes and safari for windows are pretty much the only exposure PC users have to Apple on the software front, they really should do it right.
Insanely great this isn't.
I use safari for one and one reason only: I like the way it does font smoothing a 1000x better than native Windows font smoothing. In fact, I wish Apple could release software that replaces windows font smoothing system wide!

Top Sites and the Cover Flow for Both History and bookmarks is not only cool, but useful.
Safari doesn't have a 'restore tabs on startup' feature, but it does have a 'Reopen All Windows from Last Session' under the History menu. It just doesn't happen automatically.
I'm not sure about Zoom Levels, as I've never had to deal with them.
You are wrong about Safari remembering only one password.
It's really simple, like nearly everything else Apple makes.
Just go to the site you want, and enter the second username and password.
When asked to save the password, hit 'yes'.
Then, when you go to the site, you'll see the last username you used auto-filled.
If that's not the one you want, begin typing in the username, and select the one you want.
Safari will auto-fill the password.
I use this for my Google accounts all the time.
I'm sorry you don't like Apple's style of doing it the way the majority of people want.
I'm not saying having an option would be wrong, but Apple didn't just eliminate the option because some people didn't want it. There are problems with the way Apple put tabs on the top that Chrome does not suffer. Rather than complaining, why don't you search and learn a bit about them (I've provided links for you below, though). No one said Apple is giving up, they may reintroduce them once they've figured out how to best use them; I'm sorry you like having UI problems, though.

Performance and stability aren't anywhere near an issue on OS X. I have never seen a user who has been playing around with things, or has made mistake using their Mac, that has had problems with software. Normally it is something they did or did not do, or a sit they are going to.
Stepping aside from Safari onto your other 'reason' not to use Safari, OS X does not suffer form 'OS rot' as windows does. Quite a few years ago, Apple decided to throw out OS 9, and make OS X a completely different system. This eliminated OS 9's problems, and did create new ones, yes, but Apple has done wonderfully at combating them. At the few problems that do exist, as they always will because no one's coding is perfect, Apple released Snow Leopard. It wasn't a major OS update per se, but it cleaned up the coding and made the entire system not only more stable, but 64-bit (with support for 32-bit), a feat with Microsoft with all its money has yet to accomplish. Microsoft, on the other hand, while Apple threw out OS 9, just kept on building on the same model. Windows Vista, originally as Longhorn, was supposed to do something similar to this, but in the end they gave up and decided to just build on the old system. Have you looked at the Registry in windows?
As for what you are saying about choice, I hope you realise that all major internet browsers run on OS X. Even Microsoft's IE. For any software included with OS X, there are tons of other options you can find online. Have you tried using Google?
P.S. The other person is right: this should not be in the Safari section, nor should it be a question.

• Software update, safari 3.0.2 do not work after installing mac os 10.4.11

Hi,
I've been upgrading a B&W G3 from 10.3.9 to 10.4.x and after installing from a 10.4 retail disc I used the software updater to download and install 10.4.11.  This worked fine, no errors.  But, both Software Update and Safari will not load at all, they are not even showing in the Force Quit dialog.  So I returned my system to 10.3.9 re-installed 10.4 and took an image of my installation.  I then proceeded to install a combo update, repair permissions (a task I had been performing previously), test software update and safari (which both worked), take an image of the installation for combos 10.4.3, 10.4.5, 10.4.8 and 10.4.10.  Everything worked fine.  Then I installed the stand alone 10.4.11 and was presented with faulty Software Update and Safari!!!
I've concluded there is definitely something wrong with 10.4.11 update where it be a stand alone or part of the combo update.
Is there a get around, to install the update and then amended some files, settings or something?
Thanks

Tiger 10.4.11 uses Safari 4.1.3.
Safari 4.1.3 for Tiger can be downloaded here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069
General advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Safari question here... Can I purchase a browser update for my mac book? I have OSX 10.6.8 and the "update softdate" function won't let me get past Safari 5.1.10. Please tell me I don't need a new computer just yet... Thx!!

You need to upgrade OS X.
Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Post the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.

I use Mac OS X 10.3.9. I would like to upgrade Safari to the 2.0 version, but I can't because I don't have Tiger. Is it possible to update Safari without updating my operating system? Safari 2.x is only available for OS X 10.4.x, so if you wanted or needed it you would have to upgrade your OS. If you want or need an alternate or backup browser, you could try either Firefox or Camino.
