Updated to 10.5.1 and Airport STILL broken

So my story:
I clean installed Leopard on an external HD, but network preferences would not recognise my wireless network or any of the other five I can usually see from here. However, when I am presented with Network Diagnostics option I can see all the wireless networks I would expect, and am able to log into mine. Problem was if the computer sleeps, or if I tinker with the Network Preferences, the connection drops again.
I installed the keychain and login update. The problem persisted but in a slightly different form.
I restarted after the update and the airport indicator icon reports as turn off - just the empty shape, no signal. The menu dropping down from there shows all the wireless networks in the area EXCEPT mine.
Network preferences seems to report on OK connection. Network diagnostics says there is a problem.
So there I was with no apparent connection and no way to navigate different wireless networks, yet I am able to post here in Leopard.
Now I have installed 10.5.1. I've zapped the PRAM, and repaired permissions, but there is no change in state in Airport. I still have to force it to connect through network diagnostics after every restart.

Another clue: I had the exact same problem when I updated my BlacBook to 10.4.11
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1241227&start=0&tstart=0
In Leopard - even after a reformat and virgin install - it did the same thing: cut out every few minutes and lose the network connection. In Airport Utility under Leopard it can't even find my ABS (older, not Extreme), though oddly enough it can connect - briefly - before dropping again and then reconnecting, over and over.
Booting from a 10.4.10 partition with the laptop in the same physical location results in very strong signal and perfect WiFi connection.
This leads me to believe a core piece of system code changed in 10.4.11 and was carried over into Leopard (or perhaps vice versa, given the timing of the Tiger update). So it's back to 10.4.10 for me until/unless this gets fixed.

  • Why no answer from Sony to LED and Hotspot still Broken?

Why in the world after I got suckered in to updating to ICS again (587), is LED notification for missed SMS and hotspot still not working?

Is the group in Sweden that bad?
Maybe that is why the office is being closed and the mobile group moved to Japan.  The mobile group obviously needs better management.

    Mambodoodle,
Have you called Sony Tech Support to open a case?
I have done so with each release of ICS, as I had to send my phone in for re-install of Ginberbread.
I wonder if the call-in database would have more impact vs. this online forum.
I COMPLETELY agree with you that they should at least acknowledge the situation here on the forum by someone fairly high up on the product team.

  • I have the MacBook white and there hasn't been any updates in a while. I need to update to version 10.5 and im still on 10.4.11. Can anyone tell me what to do?

I have a MacBook white and there hasn't been an update for the Mac OS X (10.5). I'm still running on version 10.4.11. can someone tell me why I haven't gotten the update?

Because you must purchase major upgrades. I advise skipping Leopard and going directly to Snow Leopard:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Airport still broken?

    Hello, everyone.
This is my first post - please excuse any breaches of etiquette.
I recently bought a MacBook 2GHz laptop, and use a Netgear router. After "upgrading" to 10.4.9, I cannot use password authentication of any kind on the router. I can configure the router to use no password and connections are fine.
This has been going on for over a month now, and after several calls to Apple support and following posts to the discussion board, I had hoped the latest update to Airport Extreme, loaded today, would solve the problem. Nope. Still can't authenticate.
Has a solution to this problem been found yet?
    Thanks.
    Jon

Been there, done that. This is a bug that Apple introduced with the 10.4.9 update. It worked fine before the update to 10.4.9, now it doesn't. A lot of people have had this problem. I thought it would be fixed by now.

  • Spaces has been broken (IMO) since 10.6 and is still broken in 10.6.3...

As many recall, Spaces was introduced in OS X 10.5 Leopard... From the get go I found it one of the most useful utilities to come along in a long time... What a great way to organize a desktop... I would set up Space 1 to be Web browsers, Space 2 for email clients, Space 3 for running Windows on my Mac, Space 4 for Excel and so forth... Twas wonderful... If I had multiple Excel spreadsheets open I could go find them all over in Space 4 and with no other clutter, just Excel, nice and clean...
And then Snow Leopard came along and it all changed... Since OS X 10.6 first came out and still through today in 10.6.3, on first open of a given application, as it should it will still open in its assigned Space, like for me, the first Excel document will still open in Space 4 no matter what Space I am in when I launch Excel... So far, so good...
But, for every subsequent opening of an Excel document, the document will open in whatever Space you happen to be in at the time... Busted... Almost worthless (IMO)... Why bother to have an assigned Space if in fact, it really isn't the Space where a given app's docs will open??? In Leopard they opened in one, defined Space... Made sense... In Snow Leopard, they open all over the place even if there is an assigned Space... Seems to make no sense...
But what I find amazing is almost no one seems to care... Myself and three or four other posters have been talking about this since Snow Leopard first came out... But no one else... And that same small group of folks have all used Feedback to let Apple know we think it was sooooo much more useful in Leopard, but update after update, it stays in this (IMO) far less useful mode...
One question I have is does the very small number of folks who have seemed to talk about this means that folks don't use Spaces???? Or does it mean that maybe I'm crazy and that others can imagine how the way it is deployed in Snow Leopard is not really broken but instead the way Apple intends it to work????
I've pretty much given up on Apple ever responding... I have actually gotten in the habit of manually switching to the Space BEFORE I open say a second or subsequent Excel doc into Space 4 (in my case). But that's more work, not less, and manually switching to the Space first seems to defeat the entire purpose for Spaces in the first place...
Anyway, if anyone has any comments I'd be interested in hearing them...
    thanks much... bob..

    Join the club Robert.
My huge annoyance is how Preview converts ai, .eps and .ps files to .pdf files.
It has progressively deteriorated from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard.
In Leopard it defaulted to saving the .pdfs to the Documents folder not the place of origin and would regularly crash if more than a few (sometimes just 2) files were opened simultaneously.
In Snow Leopard nothing was fixed and now the names are stripped off the converted files so that they are all called Untitled.
Apple must have received hundreds of bug reports (I diligently sent one every time Preview crashed) and several feedbacks detailing the problem, to the point I believe persecuting Designers and ruining their work has become a NEXT programmers secret objective.
Except for a couple of minor bug fixes to do with drag & drop in Preview, I am puzzled where the so-called improvements in Snow Leopard really benefit user.

  • Battery power, Bluetooth, and Airport all shotdown

There has been a dvd jammed in my superdrive for about a week now and today I decided to get it out. I took off the bottom unibody panel, removed the superdrive, and took the disc out. When I put it all back together I see that my battery is not powering the computer anymore, the bluetooth isnt available and is reads that there is "no airport card installed". All of which were working before I removed and reinstalled the disc drive.
    Any solutions?
I would apprecieate so so much.

power works now, but bluetooth and airport still not functioning at all.

  • 10.5.7 Mail IMAP with Gmail still broken

So when I read an email on the Gmail web interface or on my iPhone, it gets marked as read, and all my IMAP clients happily mark it as read.
All except Apple Mail. If I right click and hit "Synchronize this account" it downloads new messages just fine, but it won't mark any old ones as "read" until I quit mail and re open it. This functionality worked up until about 10.5.5 ish and is still broken as of 10.5.7.
    Any ideas?

I wish I could help, but all I can offer is to say I feel your pain!
I have the exact same problem. If I quit and restart mail.app, the unread count is corrected - but this isn't fixed by a 'Get Mail'.

  • Airport Disk still broken after latest software update

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1244463
I like how the topic above was marked as 'solved' and archived. Another Airport software has come and gone and Airport disks are still broken. Mine let me copy 74GB of data to it, but refuses to show the contents via the USB port. Anyone had any luck with this after the latest software update?

I have had similar issues since upgrading to Snow Leopard. The first time, I took my MacBook to be checked and the tech said it booted up fine under another startup disk. Since it's under warranty, they just reloaded the original system (Leopard) and I needed to rely on a time machine backup. Now, after the latest software update from Apple, I had the same problem, and am restoring from the latest Time Machine backup.
Does anyone know if this is a systemic problem? Any tips on preventing a repeat the next time I need to update my system software?
    Thanks.

I have downloaded the latest pages update on my iPad, but my iMac still has Pages version 4.3, and I cannot find out how to update it on my desktop. When I try to send something from my iPad pages via email to be opened on my desktop in Pages, it won't open in Pages. I get a message that it can't be opened because the version is too old. I sent the document as a PDF and it worked. But I want to be able to use Pages back and forth. HOw do I update the Pages version on my desktop iMac?

The file format used by the iOS versions of the iWork apps can only be read by the new iWork apps on your Mac - i.e. Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. Those versions for the Mac require Mavericks, OS X 10.9. The "too old" error on a Mac comes if you are trying to open an iWork '08 or earlier file in the newest apps. If you do have the newest apps you can open the files from your iPad.
If you can't or don't want to upgrade to Mavericks & the newest iWork apps your best option would be to export/share the files from the iPad to a type an older version of iWork can read such as Word, text, Excel, etc.
Or contact AppleCare. They made this mess, let them fix it.
