Updating Nightmare

I had the same problem as Dark MP40. Cannot do ANYTHING with the iPod... Problem started when updating the iPod and iTunes...not sure what happened, but I got some error messages that were gone before I could even read them, now my iPod display looks like it's in B&W and everytime I reset, I get the same exclamation poin with folder directing me to the support/ipod webpage. I've uninstalled the updates and reinstalled, but the iPod is not recognized and I can't even get to the option of updating or restoring. Help please!!!

Ok last try. When you did a reset, did you do a full reset that involved the hold button?
Secondly, when you tried to restore, were you trying to restore the same 1.1 updater? You need to use the previous one that came with your iPod (instructions below)
Reset your iPod.
1) Slide the lock button to ON.
2) Slide the lock button to OFF.
3) Press 'menu' and 'centre' button together for several seconds.
4) Follow the instructions.
If your iPod is vaguely functional, you should be able to restore to the previous updater.
1) Uninstall the 1.1 updater from your computer.
2) Reboot your computer.
3) Install 1.0 from the CD that came with your iPod.
4) Plug in your iPod.
5) Run the 1.0 updater.
6) Select 'restore'.
7) Follow instructions.
7) Resync with iTunes.

  • Adobe Reader XI update Nightmare on Elm Street!

I got notification to update Adobe Reader XI and it took me a little bit to get around to it, but as soon as I did it was like my computer took a walk down Nightmare on Elm Street!
It caused my computer to keep freezing up. Either wouldn't allow me to connect to the internet or kept me logged on at different times. Even, at one point, logged on without my permission!
I don't know what in the world you all did with that junk software but it took me three tries to get it uninstalled from my computer.
So now I'm back on AR10. Imagine no surprise at all when it stopped all of my glitches!!!
I realize there are a lot of operating systems out there and a bunch of system junk that has to work together but whatever was in that update, NO THANK YOU!
I wasted almost an entire day messing with this stupid garbage just trying to get it to uninstall!
    Stop messing up our computers!

There are a lot of spammers who send fake update notifications to get you to install malware along with Adobe Reader (or instead). Perhaps, just perhaps, you got one of those.
If the notification was in email it was certainly a scam.

  • 10.1 update nightmare WARNING

I had everything well organized; hunderds of events and a few hundred project. Yes I am using FCPX professional and am even an ambassador.
Yet the way Apple updates this version, is a nightmare for pro's. My complete way of organizeing things in events/ projects and folders is turned into a mess. I cant find several events and client projects are mixed up.
APPLE: never ever do updates like this!
If you reorganize media handling; inform users PRIOR and make tutorial movies. Now we have nothing and have to learn from other users. You scared away many pro users when introducing FCPX. I embraced this new way of working. FCPX is my gear to make a living. Yet for us, professionals, you cant change workflows without informing, instructing etc. Okay for consumer apps but not for pro's!
In addition several plugins no longer work. Ofcourse not an issue for Apple, but be informed
My advice ot pro's using FCPX:
DONT UPGRADE without a trial on an other machine. Master the new way of organizing media first and then upgrade.
I lost 1 full day producttivity reorganizing the mess 10.1 auto update created

I just found this info on the web.
MUST READ for everyone prior to upgrading to 10.1
Wish I had seen this earlier

  • IPad update nightmare

Just tried to install the new OS for iPad, lost all my purchased movies, TV shows and software. I updated from the new Mac Air instead of my iMac, before the update it said it was backing up everything to the mac air, but it didn't. After update I had to restore the iPad, now everything is gone!
The iPad runs right now, but all my purchased software and movies are gone!!!! How does the Apple store and iTunes keep track of my purchases and let me re-download? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply. Well I did not realize that I am only allowed one computer to sync, in fact when pluging in the iPad into the airbook it did not mention that. I think that is a serious flaw, since I also just had a hard drive crash on my iMac a couple of months ago an I noticed that I can not recoup my media from my iPods. Only reason I synced to the air book is that the internet is currently to slow (3G network - live in the country) at my place and I did the install from a friends house. Live and learn I guess. Reading from all the other reviews, the new iPad OS release has been a nightmare. I will most likely not buy any more videos from iTunes, just don't like that business model where I have to be responsible to keep several copies of every show and software I buy, seems somewhat outdated.
I hope Apple addresses these issues in the future.

  • T60 Bios Update Nightmare

Hi there, can anyone help me, or point me to some advice that is similar to this.
    I used the thinkvantage button.
I was bored and there inforn of me it said, check for BIOS updates, so I thought why not, updated bios must surely be better than the ones I already had.
They took about 5 minutes to download.
then it said, the system must restart in order for the bios to work, the system shut down, and now will not start up again.
NOTHING. When I press the poweer button, a few lights come on, but not the Hard drive light.
    I've just killed the laptop.
Is there anyone how can help me to reanimate it...I've only had it three days.
    It's a T60 1952 A32
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well I guess my problem is sorted, aparently it was a faulty Mother Board, which will be replaced because the warranty is still valid.
I can't help thinking though that the problem of ThinkVantage computer updates causing a complete nightmare is quite a serious one.
On a positive note, the support provided by IBM is great. Within minutes of calling, I was talking to someone, who gave me a fe ideas to try, then when they failed, arranged for a engineer to come out.

  • 8.2.4 update nightmare - acrobat reinstall won't accept serial #

I am a victim of the now infamous 8.2.4 update. I tried the option I read in one of these forums that has us move 3 folders from the library Adobe menu and re-input the serial # on launch, but it won't accept it as valid (? - it's a legally purchased cd).
Moreover, I don't even have the actual disk for CS3 because it's in our main office in a different city (Rome) and I am in Milan...
    What can I do?
Any chance of tricking Acrobat into accepting the new (and fixed) 8.2.4 update over the current (bad) 8.2.4?
    Thank you!

    Thank you both!
I like the idea of making a .dmg copy of the disc (though I am not sure what the process would have been).
At any rate, finally they came out with the patch(below)  and now Acrobat seems to be running just fine...

  • Update Nightmare, Phone is wiping and scrubbing?!?!

    Good day
My hubby told me to update my new bb curve 8330, so I plugged it in and started. It kept asking for a password so I typed in the one I use to lock my phone. And well thats not it, so I kept trying and well now my phone wiped and is now scrubbing!!! What does this mean, how do i stop it?! Will I have a phone when its done or do I need to get help!??!? HELP!??!?

It was asking for the password you type, on the device, to unlock it after you have locked it (or it timed out and locked itself). You programmed that password into it along with the number of attempts for it to allow before wiping clean. You must type the same password when you tether to your PC. What likely happened is that the keys you press on the BB are not sending what you think they are sending -- CapsLock, NumLock, Alt, CTRL, or some other key modifier is present on the BB; you must replicate whatever that is on the PC keyboard when you tether.

  • Muse update nightmare

Am I the only one whose Mac has been completely screwed up by the most recent Muse update? Since that fateful day when I clicked "update", I've been dealing with problems and spending waaaaay too much time online with customer support with no resolution. At first it was just that I was unable to download and install the new Muse. I finally was able dowload a new version after they had me trash my old one. It took three chat sessions with support - reinstalling AIR and Muse, over and over. I finally had to create a new user account, and use that to install the software on my hard drive. However, there's still an issue (Snow Leopard and Lion - I tried both) that now causes all Adobe software + the finder to lock up about five clicks into anything I do. Force quits don't work - only a hard restart gets it running again - for about twelve minutes. Then it's all repeated. I really need to find a resolution to this problem. Thanks for any help with this. I'm at my wits end!

With reference to your post <http://forums.adobe.com/message/5112967#5112967>, I believe you've already tried all steps listed in this thread <http://forums.adobe.com/message/5086018#5086018>.
However, if the issue persists and you're still not able to get it working, please try the suggestions posted here - http://forums.adobe.com/message/5058843#5058843 and see if that helps.

  • Iphone 4 software update nightmare

Updated my itunes, synced and tried to update my iphone4 to new software.  it now doesnt even recognise my phone, told me to restore which i did, now i have a message saying "the iphone could not be restored, this iphone could not be found, any ideas.  I have followed all info on the "help" bit which is pretty "unhelpful"

Was your iPhone produced for the country in which you are currently in?  While it doesn't seem likely, it is possible that the iTunes store can't update your iPhone because it doesn't have that model in the contry your account is associated to.
I would ask if you have tried the full instructions of unplugging the cables perfoirmign a full power off, then after restartign teh computer, connecting the cable dirctly to a USB port on the computer (not through a hub)?  Have you also tried following the instructions for placing the iPhone into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode?  I have found that when all else fails for me, the DFU seems to work.

  • Update nightmare and it continues....

    Events :
    1. received my SL update dvd this past friday. i installed it the same evening.
installation went well and my bootcamp partition was still working. all is good.
    2. day two, i switch to xp for some gaming and when i switch back to OS X (SL), the start up of SL is terribly slow. Even macmini shows that Apple sign boot logo for about 10min before allowing OS X to continue with the boot.
    3. I switch back to xp and decide to install bootcamp 3 from the xp partition. Installation successful and i see OS X partition.
    4. i boot onto OS X, and it's just as slow if not worst.
    5. when I finally reach the OS X finder desktop (some 20 later) I no longer see the bootcamp parition in system preferences - Start up.
    6. when i try to run boot camp assistant, I get a message saying - "Boot Camp Assistant Cannot be used - You must update your computer's Boot ROM firmware before using this setup assistant"
I realized something went wrong somewhere but not sure where. so I decided to re-do everything since I got TM backups.
I tried 6x installing SL from an update dvd. they all failed at different stages. 1. 45% of install. 2. froze and required hard restart. 3. at 70% of install. 4. at 85% of install. 5. Froze again, 6. At 99.9% less than a minute remained of install.
all the above were clean from scratch installs, partition removed and disk reformatted onto one partition only.
I decide then to install from 10.5.6 (dvd provided with my macmini (early 2009).
    A. the installation went well until just a few second before the end and poff, a message saying that this OS cannot be installed on this mac appears. It shutdown on its own and restarted. after a pause of nearly 10min, the install start up animation begins and i'm driving through to OS installation process.
    B. install over, i apply 10.5.8. after a painful 45min the macmini restarts and takes a while before the screen turn black and that's how far it goes now.
I don't know what snow leopard did to my macmini but I can assure you all that my hardware functioned wonderfully under leopard ever since i got it.
I don't understand what has changed to cause it to function like a chronically sick piece of hardware. As a result, i'm without my mac and I just don't know what to do. is there a way to reset the macmini to its default firmware (before the recent firmware that apple made available for mini's at least)
should I call apple care and report hardware failure ?

Thanks Scott, I followed your suggestion and proceeded with SL directly.
The installation process took about 30min and just when it reached nearly the end an error occurred and the message "This OS cannot be installed in this machine" happened again.
The machine restarted and the apple logo shows for over 10min (10min too long) before hearing some activity in the HD, then screen changes from apple logo to blue before switching to a darker gray, then it's dark... and suddenly the welcome generic for OS X installation begins without the sound... The software hangs for a good 2min when asked to select the country. now, i'm restoring from my TM backup.... "fingers crossed"
I'm not sure I'm conformable with this level of installation nor am I impressed by the "slowness" of the mac when booting up. the gray screen with the apple logo shouldn't show more than a minute and now it's there for nearly 10. It's zero step forward, 10 backwards.
This experience is making me rather "p*ed" quite frankly. if what used to be a smooth process in the OS is now becoming a total waste of time and productivity; i'm starting to see similarity between the cr*p that Microsoft produces and this very release of OS X.
my macmini feels defective since I updated to SL. even when installing the OS from the DVDs that came with it, I'm unable to proceed or finish the installation. it's horribly slow and it's not working. it's pathetic.

  • NF980-G65 BIOS Update Nightmare!!

There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for stupidity like this!!
Okay, I'm pretty sure someone or several people at MSI have their head up ass!
I have an AMD 1090T x6 going into a brand new board.  The factory shipped bios is v1.2 which doesn't identify the CPU correctly.  Trying to update to 1.4 and it cannot be done.  I've tried the HP Utility on this board, the MSI Utility on the board as well as several other bios boot diskettes, CDs, and USB Boot tools and it just hangs.
For gosh sakes, send the boards out with 1.4.
I am on a deadline and instead of installing an operating system tonight, I spent the last 5 hour F#%@ing around trying to flash a bios so I can proceed with my install.
I am using the default dumbed down bios settings, I have one stick of ram in the system, and nothing helps or works!  This is just plain retarded!!
The last time I went thru this a couple weeks ago, I ended up having to put an AMD 965 x4 into the board to flash from 1.2 to 1.4, then put in the x6 to carry on.
If ALL these companies were held accountable for the time people have to waste on their stupidity and mediocrity, this kind of crap wouldn't happen.
This kind of stupidity costs me money everyday!!  Only I have to suck it up and eat the loss everytime this kind of braindead crap is encountered.
A solution would be nice but I bet I won't get one.

Quote from: Mike on 31-January-11, 00:14:01
How can a board be sent out with 1.4 if it was manufactured when only 1.2 was available.  You can't blame MSI for a retailer sending you older stock.  Contact the retailer and have them flash it or use a supported CPU.  If you don't have another MSI board or notebook with Windows installed(you'll need to download the bios to the other computer) where you can use the forum's utility to prepare a USB stick, >>MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< , then use one of the other methods in the sticky for flashing the bios under If you are unable to use the MSI HQ USB BIOS Flashing Tool, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=119375.0 .
We understand your frustration, but please calm down and let's try to help.
Thanks mike for posting this link ... once I get my board fixed and resent I will try this flasher.  Thanks again for your help!

  • Update nightmare

What is going on here? I've read many of the problems people have been having with the 5th Generation iPods and the new update software and I too have joined the ranks. I had a perfectly functional iPod for three weeks while on vacation and upon returning and attempting to sync my iPod I got the update message and downloaded the update. I didn't run the update immediately but while the iPod was connected to my computer iTunes didn't recognize the iPod and it wouldn't sync. The iPod would only show the large "do not disconnect" screen. I tried ejecting it through my computer and reconncting but the same screen always appeared. I ran the update and it effectively killed my iPod like others have reported, first reducing the "do not disconnect" to the smaller one and then when ejecting it would simply show the iPod folder icon/support address and power off. I deleted the update from my system and reinstalled the original iPod software from the disc, rebooted my system and managed to get the iPod reprogrammed and restored. It appears to function like it did when I first got it but it will not sync and I cannot load music anymore. In short my computer recognizes the iPod but iTunes doesn't. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
      Windows 2000

    Updating my previous post:
I seem to have discovered a fix for my problem (so far). It seems to have centered around the fact that I deleted the iPod update but didn't run the Windows uninstall protocol. I noticed that I was still getting the 1-10-06 updater message even though my iPod was reprogramed with the disc version iPod software. I simply went into the Control Panel's "Add/Remove Software" and there was the the bad 1-10-06 iPod update listed... I ran the uninstall, then reinstalled the disc version included with the iPod and launched the updater and was near elation when iTunes recognized my iPod and began to sync...
My suggestion to all is avoid that new update at all costs. My problems began when I saw the update window after plugging in my iPod and immediately clicking the "update" button. The new software was downloaded but I hadn't even rebooted my system and my iPod/iTunes sync problems had already manifest. Simply having the new update on my machine seems to have inhibited my iPod from syncing with iTunes. FYI, I run Windows 2000 Professional on my 2 year old Dell Precision 350 work station... Live and learn!
