Updating Snow Leopard Server Software on Dual Intel Mac Mini

I have a 2009 Mac Mini Dual Core 2.53 Intel with 4 gb Ram running as a server under 10.6.8 Max OSX Server.
But I have never used the server capabilities and don't reallyneed them.
The Boss, Wife, wants ITunes radio on it, but it won't work apparently unless you run 10.9.
I tried updating to 10.9 server, but it wouldn't downlaod because the downloader said it needed to run under OSX 10.9.
I am trying to download Mavericks to see if it'll install, but I'm guessing the server level security won't let it.
How can I update to OSX 10.9  Server to basically keep her system as "same" as possible...so ITunes radio will work on it for her?
Is there an easy way other than copy as much as possible to another HD, reformat the entire original Mini HD and start from scratch?
I don't know if I can install another OS on it's second internal HD and just boot up from that one..since I think the server systen may not allow multiple boot drives?
Is there an easy solution to updateing Snow Leopard Server to Mavericks?

Help appreciated Greatly.
I downloaded Mavericks with no problem and held my breath to see if it would install OK.
It did.
No major issues and just about everything is working OK right out of the box.
Transition from Snow Leopard Server to OSX Mavericks Single User OS went fine.
Donlt have to worry about archane "Server Language" anymore and administerring this computer will be much easier.
Hope it's a stable build.

  • Install Snow Leopard Server Software on non server version mac mini (2009)

Recently purchased Snow Leopard Server software to install on a early 2009 mac mini (non server version) running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My goal is to set up and manage a server for a small group and leverage some of services from snow leopard server.
First of all, can server software be installed on a early 2009 mac min configured with Mac OS X Snow Leopard? This 2GHz Intel Core Duo mac mini has 2GB Ram and 120GB HD. Will the server software install remove the current snow leopard software or is there any special steps I need to take to get the server version software loaded on this mac mini. Any suggestions or advise is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Yes you can install it on your mini And Yes it will wipe the mini clean with a fresh install of the server software.

  • Snow Leopard Server Software - Mac Mini Copy vs Retail Copy

    Hi All,
I recently purchased a mac mini server, with what I thought would be a SL Server license.
I've used the Mac Mini to run a Leopard server whilst our Xserve was out of action.
Now the xserve is back, I was thinking of installing SL on the Xserve and keep the mini running leopard until we migrate over.
When I tried to install SL on the Xserve, it gave me an error. I rang Apple, and the enterprise guy told me this wasn't possible, as the copy that came with the mac mini was hardware specific and just a restore copy of snow leopard server. Bottom line I can't install the Mac Mini version of SL on an Xserve, even though I have paid for a SL license in buying the mac mini!
Does anybody know if there is any real differences between the hardware specific software copy and a retail version. If there isn't I'll install a copy on the mac mini and copy it over to the xserve. I just want to be sure that I'm not getting a downsized version of software!
    Thanks.

There are ways to extract the OS from the restore disk so you can use in other system. you will just have to do a little online search. but I think it will be illegal if you care of course... but it would probably be easier to just download a copy from rapidshare or something like that and use your key ..
As far as feature there is none between the restore and retail copy.

  • Snow leopard installation dvd keeps ejecting on Mac Mini

    HI,
    I have a Mac Mini, 1.83ghz, intel core duo, 2gb 667mhz DDR2 SDRAM running OS Leopard 10.5.8.
Im trying to install snow leopard from the dvd onto the mac and it keeps ejecting it.
It wont even mount on the desktop, can anyone help?
Ive restarted holding the 'c' key but it still ejects the dvd. The dvd doesnt look damaged or scratched either and have disconnected all my peripherals as well.
    Cheers Pete

    Pete,
This may sound so simple but it may be the problem.  Unplug your USB keyboard and just plug in your mouse.  Then insert the DVD.  If it stays in, you have a sticky key on the keyboard.  Cleaning your keyboard may be all that it takes.
Otherwise, your optical drive is not recognizing the platter and you have more serious issues.  Rule out the easy and obvious first.
    Jim~

  • Snow Leopard simply won't install on Mac Mini

After failing to upgrade over Leopard 10.5 on my Mac Mini (it has 2Gb Ram), I did a reinstall of the original software, erasing the disk and starting fresh. It's now at 10.4.5 with all of the most recent updates installed, and 59.9 Gb memory free on the hard drive, no partitions or peripherals other than the mouse and keyboard; processor 1.66.
The Snow Leopard disk is brand new out of the box. At each attempt at reaches to about '39 minutes left' and then the 'Installation Failed -- could not copy support files' or something like that. The same thing happened when I tried a friend's Family Pack Snow Leopard disk, so it's unlikely that it is the disk itself. And since the reinstall of the original software went fine, the problem doesn't seem to be the optical drive. After about 5 tries, I never get beyond this specific point, and have to start over.
I ran the 'verify disk' utility and it reported that everything seems to be OK with the hard disk.
Any clues as to how to get this to work? I wish I could simply install the 10.5 Leopard, but that disk has gone missing.

That would indeed be the most logical reason for failure, and close inspection of the disk shows some blemishes that were not there at the start of the process. But another attempt to install from another disk -- a 'Family Pack' disk -- produced exactly the same failure at exactly the same point in the process. A firewire option will have to wait for another day, since this one is pretty much shot at this point.
    Thanks

  • Remote Desktop and Snow Leopard Server

What is the best way to use Remote Desktop with Snow Leopard Server?
I purchased a mac mini with snow leopard server and Remote desktop so I can easily manage my 11 computers, install and upgrade software etc. etc.
The mac mini server will basically be nothing but a server.
I will use as my main computer a mac pro. Do I need to install Remote Desktop on the server and on my mac pro? What is the best way to deploy the services of Remote desktop and mac os x server?

You install Apple Remote Desktop on the machine you want to control from. In this case, install on your Mac Pro. All you have to do on the clients (controlled Macs) is enable remote management in the System Preferences under Sharing. Just make sure that all your controlled Macs are up to date on their ARD version (v3.3.2) which can be taken care of from Software Update.

  • Nslookup Snow Leopard Server DNS problems

I have a mac mini that I'm trying to turn into a snow leopard server. Attached to the mac mini I have three external hard drives which act as back ups to our mac book pro laptops. I have installed the server software and downloaded all the updates and I can see the drives on the server and I can acess the external drives and backup to them with out a problem. The issue that I have is that when I run nslookup I get an error message which tells me that it can't find my name and that I need to rerun so software commands.
I'm also unable to run either dns or podcast producer which was the main reason for buying the server software. I have a static ip address and believe I have configured everything correctly but I just can't seem to sort out the DNS and problems.
    Any thoughts - thanks
    Russell

  • Can't rename folders on Snow Leopard Server

I have 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server running on a new Mac Mini server. Attached I have a Pegasus Raid storing all my files. I have a sharepoint set up for every project we work on but a couple act strangely. Users can create and delete folders but can not rename them once created. In order to rename they must drag the folder onto the desktop, rename and then replace the folder on the server. All permissions are set up identical to the other sharepoints which work fine. I have had a couple so-called "experts" look at the permissions in both the terminal and Server Admin. Everyone seems stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks for the input but I finally soved the problem. Here is what I found...
Although I had given users/group the ALLOW/FULL CONTROL premission with a sharepoint, I discovered that in Server Admin if you double-click on the User or Group name under the ACL permissions that a drop down box appears. This box allows you to fine tune the ACL but it appears that by default all of the boxes are not checked even though I granted the user Full Control. After checking all of the boxes I was able to create and rename folders in my share as expected.
This also had an similar effect if I denied Full Control. Some of the boxes remained unchecked and it left holes in my system where denied users could still access some files. Again by checking all boxes these holes were closed.
Does anyone know how to change the default so that all boxes are checked when assigning the Full Control permission?

  • Installing/using parental controls on a snow leopard server machine

Here is the question: Is there any way to permanently install parental controls in on a mac mini with Snow leopard server software on it?
    My situation:
I manage a computer lab of 40ish computers using Apple Remote Desktop, which does not have any support for parental controls. I have these computers set so that their P.C.s can be remotely managed, but they can only be managed from a machine which has parental controls in the system preferences. I can only manage the P.C.s from one of the other lab computers, which are under student use 90% of the time. The server mac mini did not come with the P.C.s preference pane, and so it is fairly useless on that front.
I have tried various methods of getting around these blocks. I was able to copy the parental controls .prefpane file from one of the lab computers on to the server, and when I ran it, it installed into my server computer and placed the preference pane in System Preferences. For a brief minute I was able to manage the lab computers' P.C.s, but once I restarted System Preferences, the P.C. preference pane disappeared, and will not re-install or anything (I get a "it is not available to you at this time" message).
Is there any way to use the server to manage parental controls?

    Hi
+"Is there any way to permanently install parental controls in on a mac mini with Snow leopard server software on it?"+
I don't think so? Besides there's no need for it. Parental Controls is available as a Managed Preference (or MCX) using WorkGroup Manager either at Users, Group or Hardware Level. Launch the application and click on the Preferences icon and you'll see what I mean.

  • Snow Leopard Server VPN and other Servers

I am thinking of deploying Snow Leopard Server at work using the Mac MiniServer option. We have a few Macs that we would like to manage their settings with. We also have Active Directory. I plan to use Open Directory with the Mac then use kerbos for logins.
My question is if I use the Snow Leopard Server VPN with the Macs, will the users be able to access other resources on the LAN like Active Directory Shares, Exchange, and internal Intranets? Or only the Snow Leopard Server?
    Thanks,
    WillGonz

It sounds like you will have 2 different kerberos realms, one in OD and one in AD.
If you want them to use the same realm (the AD one) you need to look at a "golden triangle" setup.
If you want to authenticate the VPN connection using Kerberos I suspect you need to be able to reach the KDC server from Internet before the VPN is up. That would mean it needs to have a public IP and same name as on the LAN(?).
As an alternative a Radius connection for the VPN authentication from the Mac to an AD/Radius server might be possible.

  • Snow Leopard Server Help

Hi all, thanks for reading. I am looking to cut over an existing PC network to OSX. The server will be mac mini with Snow Leopard server and a mixture of macs and pc's. I need to work out how I am going to setup the database that this business uses. It is a windows only program that stores the files on the server and client machines access from the GUI. Will I need to setup a windows share and virtualise windows on the mac clients or virtualise windows on the server as well?
    Thanks

There's no way to answer your question with the data available.
You need to be more specific about the database system that you're running. For example, is it just a series of files on the server which each client open (and deal with the concurrency issue), or is this a server-based application that the clients connect to over the network (so clients send network traffic to the server which deals with the file access).
Once you answer that you need to look at the client and see whether there's a Mac OS X client or not. That will tell you whether you can run this from Macs on the client side or whether you need to run Windows at the client level.

  • Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to use it?

Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to have it work right?

Netboot and Software Update, at its simplest.  Mac OS X Server also expects to have functional IP networking and DNS services (somewhere) on the LAN (and if you're behind a NAT gateway, then the DNS server(s) are on your LAN and not out at your ISP), or things get weird.  SUS (usually) works out of the box, outside of cases where there's an outbound firewall.  Netboot can be more effort to setup, in terms of what you're loading into the clients.

  • Snow Leopard Server Update Issue

    Good afternoon.
I had some issues with my software update server, not issuing the correct updates and been real sluggish etc. After doing some research on the web and in this forum, I have reset the /etc/swupd and /var/db/swupd folders, rebooted, turned back on the update server and reconfigured everything.
I have noticed that after some time, the updates are downloaded and the blue exclamations go away. I enable the updates that I want and save everything. After a reboot of the server, all my enabled copied downloads are back to 0. And the "Updates Copied" and "Updates Enabled" are back to 0.
I have repaired disk permissions, FSCK etc, and all appears well. In the my /var/db/swupd/html/content/downloads, I have a couple GB of stuff. If I go further into this folder structure I can actually see the updates. It feels like a configuration file is not been written to correctly, and hence on reboot everything goes back to default. The permissions on swupd.conf and swupd.plist appear to be fine and there contains are OK.
Has anyone encounted this issue before or have any suggestions? I tried going back to the backups I made before I reset the /etc/swupd and /var/db/swupd folders but I have the same issue.
    Regards Chris.

Does anyone here have a crystal ball?  I can't answer it anymore than the next person.  I'd ask it in the Snow Leopard Server forum after the release date.  This is a user to user forum.

  • Installed Snow Leopard OK, but when uploading the Mac os x Update Combined, it would not save. It said it could not connect to update server, but my internet connection is working?

Installed Snow Leopard OK, but when uploading the Mac OS X Update Combined, it would not save. It said it could not connect to update server, but my internet connection is working. Any suggestions on fixing?

Run software up date, write down the update name and version. Go to the Apple site and do a search for the updates one at a time and download them one at a time. Use an ethernet connection, sometimes software update "crushes large updates. I have experienced this before.  Hope it helps.  ATB
