Updcheck. Checks urls for updates +color diff etc
Reads a textfile(~/.updcheck/urls) for well, urls, and mirrors & checks for changes appropriately. I used to use this to maintain packages but now i use it to check changes in websites.
After i made this script i realised that there were already Update Scanner which is a firefox extension AND Specto(which now works) which does the same thing. However, this script have far less dependencies and works on the console and in scripts. It also has far less code, is written in bash, and has cool diff color functionality which you can steal
I also might add % support(site changed thus many percent) and other features if there is demand.
I sat the default console width to 180 chars, that might be too wide for someone. Be sure to maximize your terminal(or change the diff code) if you want prett(y/ier) output.
Run the script on your terminal and it tells you what to do.
I uploaded elinks-git to AUR because it had a fix for 'æøå'(probably other int. characters aswell) and it seems snappier, so i also recommend that.

There is also ck4up, a ruby-script, which I am using for that purpose. But I probably would prefer a bash script over that.

What is the correct firmware update check URL for a Westell VersaLink 327W?
Hi, I was wondering what the correct URL is for the modem to check for updated firmware on the Westell VersaLink 327w. My model is the D90-327W15-06 and its current firmware is 04.04.03
To clarify, I'm looking for the URL that goes in the box at the top of the upgrade page in the router's advanced settings. That link is a screenshot of what my page currently looks like.
Since I first got this modem 2 or 3 years ago, it has never been able to properly check for updates. I've tried changing the URL to point to the Verizon support page for manually downloading the firmware but that doesn't seem to work either. I'm guessing the URL should point to a specific file, possibly an xml or something? I don't remember what the original address in the box was but it didn't work anyway.
I'm pretty sure I am running the latest version (04.04.03) and manually upgrading isn't a problem if a new version comes out but its always bugged me that the built-in check has never worked right for me so I figured I'd ask on here for the heck of it. At the very least I'd like it to be able to check version information even if it can't upgrade automatically.
Does the built-in firmware check work for anyone else using the 327w or similar model? If so, could you kindly copy/paste the URL on your modem's firmware page? Even if you have a different modem, it might help me figure out the right address for my own. #4 Then use the file that you downloaded earlier to upgrade the router..

I want to check if in a url some parameters are passed on in what form whatsoever.
I know that data can also be passed on in the url as hex code.
For example: I check for the parameter "test".
In hex this is: %64%61%74%61
But when you display this hex value in the html page, it is encoded to "test".
But now is my question: To check if "test" is passed in the url, should I only check for the the string "test" itself(if normal passed) and his hex-code or must I check on other codings too?The browser by itself only encodes some special characters like @.-$/ etc. And even if the browser encodes them, by the moment you search for them through request.getParameter("test") they have already been unencoded.

Imac i7 32gb ram nvidia 680 mx for AE color grading etc?
I am considering The new Imac, 3.4GHz quad-core Core i7 Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX with 2GB mem.
The specs seem almost exact to any i7 hackintosh or PC custom build(of the same class)... except for the Graphics card which is the MX (laptop) over the GTX (desktop model). I am trying to decide whether to have a hack built or get the imac and I would rather have one under apple care so that I do not have to worry about tech support as opposed to a hack build.
Does anyone have any experience or info on whether this imac will perform with realtime playback doing things like high performance effects in AE or color grade in speedgrade or davinci etc. I Would like to be able to work in real time and not have tons of slow playback issues. I believe that card works with MPE just not sure how well.
I will be using mostly hdslr .h264 footage.

Desktop Video cards always have better performance than mobile just as CPU's. The only reason to get mobile Video is if you require a mobile editing solution. In regards to Imac's, that is one of the sacrifices you make for a OSX Desktop unit that has limited configuration and upgrade options. Imac's can handle editing that media but a PC unit will give you far better performance realtime especially with the X79 platform.

First and foremost, I'd like to clarify that I hardly have any technical knowledge. So pardon me if this comes across as a silly question to the professionals. Here are the details pertaining to this problem as per the best of my limited knowledge:
I'm currently using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.18; previously it was 3.6.13. It was updated to 3.6.13 from 3.6.9 after I clicked on Check for Updates... and it told me that it'd be done when I reboot my system. When I restarted my PC, I was surprised to find that it was downloading the version 3.6.18. I didn't know how much it'd progressed in the process, so I let it finish it. After that, I disabled the option that enables it to download and update on its own, and turned it off. Next time when I started it, it was 3.6.18, but wasn't updating on its own anymore.
Now I wanna update it directly to the latest version 5.0.1. But when I leave it to "'''Automatically download and install the update'''" option under Tools>Options>Advanced>Update, it downloads and updates the versions as per their release order. So if I leave it to it, then when I start it next time, it'll start downloading the version next to 3.6.18 and update to it instead of updating directly to 5.0.1. It'll keep doing so until it reaches there. For reasons of my own, I don't like that. So I '''unchecked '''the "Automatically download and install the update" option and chose the "'''Ask me what I want to do'''" option (so that it doesn't keep repeating the "downloading and updating" process on its own every time I start my PC). Then I went to Firefox site and thought of downloading and updating to the latest version on my own. But then I was informed that if I do so, '''I'll get the latest version, but I'll lose all my saved bookmarks unless I follow some hectic procedure to save them and load them again after installing the latest version of Firefox'''. I don't want to let that happen either. So, can anyone suggest me a way out of this situation without losing my bookmarks?
Almost forgot. I tried several times by going to '''Help>Check For Updates...''', but every time it returned the same result: "There are no updates available. Firefox will check periodically for updates." How come no update is available while the version I'm using is 3.6.18 and the latest version is 5.0.1? In short, '''Check for Updates...''' didn't help either. (Even when I updated it last time, shouldn't it have updated itself from version 3.6.13 to 5.0.1 directly?)

The only problem there was that it wasn't updating directly to the latest version.)

I just today updated to Firefox 3.6.20 from Firefox 3.6.18. I tried checking for new updates again using the Check for Updates option under Help and it said that "There are no updates available. Firefox will check periodically for updates." I am looking for Firefox 6 update, but it does not find it. This happened before when I tried to search for Firefox 5 when I had Firefox 3.6.18 and before Firefox 6 came out. Why does it not detect the latest version of Firefox when there is clearly a newer version out there?

Software Update won't check for updates automatically

Since my update to Lion, the automated Software Update (Preferences -> Software Update) won't check automatically for updates, even if it's configurated to check daily. I can see this behaviour on different MacBooks with Lion.
If I check manually, I'll get all necessary updates - but not automatically.
Do you've an idea or the same issue?

SUS - Some Clients Take a Long Time to Check for Updates
We have the newest XSERVE, running 10.6, with 12GB of RAM. We use it as our software update server and for some reason, some clients take a long time to check for updates. I'm talking anywhere from an 30 mins to an hour. I can't figure it out. Some clients are quick, some are extremely long.
Now if I tell the client to just check Apple for updates, it takes a few seconds.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Thanks.After another restart, firefox has begun throwing errors when starting from terminal. the error reported is:
/opt/kde/bin/skim: error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
This is printed 5 times, then gives up and firefox loads quickly after. So this appears to be an issue with skim and libpng similar to other problems being reported.
Some research uncovered that skim is no longer supported and is part of my kdemod3 install, however until this update it was working fine under kdemod4. -
ITunes opens explorer window when searching for updates or selecting restore for any iOS device.
When trying to check for updates from within iTunes for any device, or trying to restore a device in iTunes I click the update/restore button and iTunes opens an explorer window for me to browse to the .ipsw file. I am unable to get iTunes to check the Apple servers for the restore/update files.
Where is this setting stored either in the registry or the iTunes folder?
I have performed a clean uninstall (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923) , have removed my apple preferences that were stored in the AppData folders for each user and have reinstalled and still see the explorer box rather than the check apple for updates dialogue.
I have a feeling that the particular setting is somewhere in either the itunes library folder, in the registry or in another plist file... but where is the question?Have you had any luck in resolving this issue? Seems Apple are a bit quiet on it...

FireFox 3.6.8 & ThunderBird 3.1.2 check for updates never connects, nor does plug-in update or get plug-ins
I am doing several re-installs.
I installed FireFox 3.6.8 and ThunderBird 3.1.2 on a fresh install of Windows XP Home SP3 x32.
All Windows updates and IE8, etc were done first after the WinXP install.
IE8 works fine.
Firefox can connect to the internet to view webpages, but NOT do a check for a newer version.
(by going, on the main menu at the top, to Help --> Check for updates...)
Neither can Tbird.

Another computer, same 'build' (different hardware, but WinXP SP3, etc) using a connection from the same router going out to the internet works fine, so it is not an overall connection problem outside of the individually affected computer.
There is not yet any anti-virus nor firewall, etc installed that could be blocking things, except for Windows built in firewall, and there is no blocking action showing. Disabling it did not solve the issue.
6 hours of searching has not found an answer. Trying some of the search results just to see has not proven to be successful.

Try this, go to tools, add-ons, extensions. if you have more than one (the latest) Java consoles, uninstall them. You only need the latest console and it should match the Java Platform in Plugins.
I had a VERY similar problem displaying weatherunderground. It would not display the pages correctly and I would get pages of errors that stated
"window.addEvent is not a function" I spent the last two hours fixing this problem. All I did was remove the 6.0.18, 6.0.19, 6.0.20 Java consoles from my 3.6.8 Firefox. After a FF restart, no more errors.
There should be more information in FF when you update Java. No one tells you that you should go in and delete the older consoles.

IPod acknowledged by PC but only charges while checking for updates
This may very well be a newbie question, but I have not been able to find any help online. I plug in my ipod to charge, and everything acts normal - if itunes is open, it checks for new songs and updates it, etc, while charging. The only problem is that it does not continue to charge after it checks for updates. As soon as it says it is ok to eject in itunes, the ipod reverts back to normal and after a while just shuts itself off.
I have tried plugging it in the computer while itunes is closed as well, and it does something very similar. It didn't always used to be this way - Sometimes I would need to fiddle with it, but I could get it to charge.
Any help is appreciated =)
5th gen video Windows 2000The USB is turning off after it updates and Ejects.
Right click on My Computer and select Properties, Hardware, Device Manager.
Click on Universal Serial Bus.
Right Click on USB Root Hub then Properties.
In the box, select the Power Management tab.
Deselect Allow the computer to turn off power to this device to save power.
Do this for all the USB Root hubs which may show up. -
I restarted my computer but still have this issue.
I changed the setting from "install updates automatically" to "never check for updates". clicked ok and then changed back to "install updates automatically". Tried to check for updates and still receive the same error.
Windows defender was turned off. I turned it on updated it but still receive the same error message.
The background intelligent transfer service and windows update are set to "automatic delayed start" and the status for both is "started".

Please try this
Stop Windows Update Service and BIT Service now.
Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all file under this folder.
Start Windows Update and BIT service now.
Then try to download windows update now.
If doesn't work, please reset the windows update componments

Yoga 13 after Win 8.1 update - apps for Netflix, CNN, ESPN, etc. will not play video - WTH?
Can someone point me to where I can download the right driver(s) / updates that fix thw Windows 8.1 mess that crippled video playback in the Modern/Metro Win8 interface please?
I had other issues with wireless (which I fixed by buying a Linsys 802.11ac USB nub - finally decent range & performance), but really want to get this Win 8.1 video playback issue fixed.

Very disappointed that Microsoft/Intel/Lenovo forced this 8.1 "upgrade" on us without having checked it for flaws in operation like this. I've read other people having this, and similar problems, so any fixes / suggestions / links are greatly welcomed.(Note that all of the following applies only to the Yoga 13)
I think the previous reply is inaccurate in several ways. Let me address each one:

This isn't quite correct. There is no need to "roll back" to any previous driver versions. What actually happened with the Windows 8.1 upgrade is that the Windows installation process reinstalled or refreshed all of the drivers in the system, and for some reason this driver installation process screwed up and left some drivers not functioning correctly. In almost all cases the solution is to simply reinstall that driver with the current/same version. The Conexant driver is the poster child for this problem. The version of the driver that comes with the Windows 8.1 upgrade is the same as the version on the Lenovo site. However it is often necessary to reinstall this driver to get it installed correctly.
I just want to reiterate that this is not a version problem, it's a problem with the way 8.1 reinstalled the drivers. This need to reinstall drivers affected people differently, with some people needing to reinstall other drivers as well, such as the Intel Thermal Framework drivers, etc.
Windows 8.1 comes with newer versions (also newer than the reposted drivers on the Lenovo site) of the network Wifi drivers that for my system have been an improvement. However I have not experienced a lot of the Wifi issues that others have reported. The only issue I have had with Wifi is that it was always a bit slow to connect after coming out of sleep mode (30-60 seconds). After the 8.1 upgrade my Wifi connects very fast (less than 5 seconds).
Windows 8.1 also came with an updated Intel graphics driver that is newer than the one on the Lenovo site. I am not aware of any problems with this new version.
My Yoga 13 is now functioning perfectly after the 8.1 update, although I did have to perform the reinstall of the Conexant drivers, and I had to reapply the fix for the touch screen missing the first swipe. I recommend the list of Yoga 13 fixes mentioned on this site.
"Microsoft or Lenovo should add a setting to the "Configure Windows Update" options - it should be "Wait 6 months after the update is published for it to stabilize"
I don't agree with this as the drivers that come with 8.1 weren't unstable or problematic. Again, the problem is with the 8.1 installation process, and I do agree that Microsoft should work on fixing that. It has certainly caused a lot of people some grief, but it also seems that we have a solution which is the driver reinstalls.
I also don't recommend turning off Windows update.
Finally, it may be that some of the issues you bulleted are more serious than I am aware, as I haven't had all of these problems. I would like to know more about these:
"Kill the video / audio in Windows Apps (aka "Modern" interface) - Netflix, ESPN videos, CNN videos, etc. "
This is certainly a common problem. At least we have the fix for this (reinstall the Conexant drivers).
"Degrade WLAN performance (range and speed)"
I am skeptical that 8.1 is responsible for Wifi issues. Seems like in general the new 8.1 network stack is better. I know that many people had wifi issues prior to the update.
"Fuzz out the resolution / display such that Display has to be turned down from 150% to "small""
I don't know about this issue, so I would like to hear more.
Mess up touchpad, keyboard, tablet-mode keyboard
This again seems more like a problem that existed before 8.1, as many people had issues with this. The most consistent solution seems to be disabling the "ymc" service.
