Upgrade default java version in Solaris 8?
I have Solaris 5.8 running on sun blade system. Default Java version is 1.2.2 and user need it to upgraded to latest version of Java so, I installed jre1.6.0 (combination of 32-bit install and 64 bit install). Now I can't point solaris to look at the newly installed java version. I have tried to change the path variable in .cshrc but it is readonly to root and group is deamon. I also tried changing the symbolic link from /usr/java to /usr/jre1.6.0 but it is still looking at default version of java1.2.2.
I need help as I don't know much about Solaris to upgrade this java. Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
solaris_newbee
After installing, you need to update the '/usr/java' sym link to point to your new root installation. For example, I installed jdk1_5_16 at /usr/jdk/jdk1.5.0_16/ and then added this symlink:
ln -s /usr/jdk/jdk1.5.0_16/ /usr/java
You may need to remove the symlink that is already there before it will allow you to successfully create the new one.
There are several other dependent symlinks in /usr/bin that use /usr/java, but you only have to update /usr/java.
From one noob to another.

When I'm changing the default java version in the Default Project Properties to 1.5.0_05-b05 and creating a new project; the new project still has java version 1.5.0_05 (Default).
Bug?
/Per-ArneI have just made the test of setting JDK 1.5.0_04 as the default version of Java and when I created a new project it worked perfectly. The change was made by downloading JDK 5 update 4 from Sun; making it accessible to JDeveloper by defining a new J2SE Definition in JDeveloper (from Default Project Properties) and selecting it as the default version of Java.
Please note that even though 1.5.0_05-b05 was not selected by default, it was selectable for the new project, so it's not a big deal, but I still think that it must be a bug under the hood that should be corrected.
The reason that I tried to change the default Java version was that Sun's version was 1.5.0_05-b05 and JDeveloper's was "only" 1.5.0_05-b03. ;-) -

My Applet start failed due to security warning after upgrading java version
Hi Team,
We have an application where we read the weight from the attached weighing Scale (Hardware device).
For this we use one Applet which runs and reads the data.
Now we upgraded the Java version from 1.6 to 1.7 and started encountering a security alert 'Running unsigned applications like this will be blocked in a future release because it is potentially unsafe and a security risk'.
Our application runs on a HTP port not on HTTPS because this is installed in client premise and no risk in opening HTTP port internally.
Could you please help us in resolving the issue. We don't want to see the alert even after upgrading the Java version.

How to Upgrade java version on J2EE Engine Server?
Hi Experts,
We are running the NetWeaver 2004s SP 7 with Java version 1.4.2_08 on the server, but we would like to upgrade the system and be able to upgrade to Java version 1.5. How do we start? We would greatly appreciate your responses.
Thanks,
-Don P.but we would like to upgrade the system and be able to upgrade to Java version 1.5
Can you explain this more accurately? For example the OS version
Are you say about SUN or IBM JDK? I'm think you say about SUN JDK ...when only 1.4.2.XXXX can be installed for
NW 7.0, Do not use
Java version 1.5
In any case Try to check the

Hello xperts,
I am using OIM 9.1.0.1 freely availabe on oracle site with Jboss.
When I installed I used JDK 1.4.Now how to upgrade my Java version?I want to use jdk1.5
Thanks
-MahiWell the JDK you specified during installation was consumed during installation process. Now when OIM is started in sync with the JBoss, it reads the JAVA_HOME environment variable. So just update your environment variable JAVA_HOME to point to this new JDK.
OIM Server invokes the xlStartServer.bat which in turn invokes the run.bat, wherein the logic for JAVA_HOME handling is specified. Just see if you want to relate and know more and do as I told above.
Thanks

Upgrading to Java 1.4.1 on OS X
On http://www.apple.com/java/ they state:
The Java 1.4.1 Update 1, now available from software update, improves stability, memory usage, and correctness. Requires
Mac OS X v10.2.6 or later.
Following the link one is directed to:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/softwareupdates.html
Apparently one should be able to upgrade the Java version by doing a standard Mac 'Software Updates'. I have installed the Mac "compilation" upgrade (100Mb) but Java didn't follow that. After a restart and running the tool again, I still do not see Java in the list of available updates (and there are no 'compilation packs' where Java might be).
Anyone know how to upgrade the Java version on a Mac? I can't believe how difficult this turned out to be.Here is a helpful link for more info...

-- Begin Copy
Q: What version of Java is included on Mac OS X?
A: Mac OS X v10.3, "Panther", is now shipping with an updated Java 1.4.1. A Java 1.4.1 Update 1 for Mac OS X v10.2.6 ("Jaguar") is currently being updated for compatibility with other software updates, and will be made available again shortly. Both releases are based on the J2SE 1.4.1_01 JDK with the HotSpot Client VM, and contain a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements since the initial Java 1.4.1 release.
Q: Does Mac OS X support multiple J2SE versions on a single OS installation?
A: The Panther and Jaguar releases of Mac OS X include both 1.3.1 and 1.4.1 J2SE implementations. Earlier releases of Jaguar did not ship with Java 1.4.1, but can obtain 1.4.1 through Software Update. With 1.4.1 installed, the standard command-line commands such as java and javac use 1.4.1. Apple developer tools such as Jar Bundler and Xcode both allow you to specify a Java version for double-clickable apps to use. Please see the Java 1.4.1 Info.plist Dictionary Keys documentation for details on how this is done.
-- End Copy
I was able to download the update via Software Updates. But the response "currently being updated" means that it may have been pulled off the update list temporarily.
On the other hand, if it does not appear in the list of available updates when you run Software Update, you may already have it.
Launch a terminal and enter "java -version". What is the output? -
What is the Supported Java Version
I have been trying to find any information on what version of
Java Adobe will officially support for ColdFusion 8.
I am considering upgrading the Java version to the latest
(updater 5) but would avoid doing so if it means I would not be
supported.
Does anyone know what versions of Java are supported for CF8?
ThanksI have seen that document and it says that 1.6_01 is the
supported version. I had seen a document referencing 1.6_02 and
figured that at least that version was supported. After going back
and finding it again, I see that it was not an Adobe document as I
had recalled.

Changing the Java version in UNIX
I have a Java version 1.4.2_02 defined in /usr/bin/java.....which is the Java version used by the OS.
I have installed a higher version in /home/self directory..
How can I set this as the default Java version to be used by the system?
Thanks!
AnandSorry abt this...but I am not tht familiar with
setting of env variables and settings in UNIX too..
can u tell me how do I change this variable in
UNIX...the JAVA_HOME and set it as default for the
system.
Thanks!
AnandNot a UNIX person myself, but this is not a Java-related question at all, but rather an Operating Systems one. You might want to put that kind of question to an appropriate forum elsewhere, or ask classmates/coworkers.
However, someone may chime in here. -
"java -version" fails in Solaris 5.9 with relocation error
Hi all,
Appologies for the Java 'newbie-ness' of this query from the outset... But here goes. My current configuration is ...
SunOS 5.9 Generic_112233-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2
and I'm trying to run with Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition Version 1.4.1
As far as I know, local support has fed me with the required patches to get me up and running so as I can use 'jar' to upgrade a jarfile. But if I try to do this (or even just try "java -version"), I just get...
Error: failed /usr/j2se/jre/lib/sparc/client/libjvm.so, because ld.so.1: java: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/j2se/jre/lib/sparc/client/libjvm.so: symbol __1cG__CrunSregister_exit_code6FpG_v_v_: referenced symbol not found
I can only find this bug (?) referencing Solaris 5.7 at most recent. Am I missing something obvious?
I've got...
setenv JAVA_HOME /usr/j2se
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/sparc/server:$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/sparc
Are the solaris 7 patches not necessarilly in the patch bundle I've had stuffed on here...?It looks like that the likely cause of this error is some failed library dependancy. You can manually check if all libraries libjvm.so depends on are actually present on the system by running the following commands:
$ cd /usr/j2se/jre/lib/sparc/client/
$ ldd libjvm.so
The output of the ldd command should look something like the following with possible slight deviations:
libCrun.so.1 => /usr/lib/libCrun.so.1
libdl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libdl.so.1
libthread.so.1 => /usr/lib/libthread.so.1
libsocket.so.1 => /usr/lib/libsocket.so.1
libnsl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libnsl.so.1
libm.so.1 => /usr/lib/libm.so.1
libw.so.1 => /usr/lib/libw.so.1
libc.so.1 => /usr/lib/libc.so.1
librt.so.1 => /usr/lib/librt.so.1
libmp.so.2 => /usr/lib/libmp.so.2
libaio.so.1 => /usr/lib/libaio.so.1
libmd5.so.1 => /usr/lib/libmd5.so.1
/usr/platform/SUNW,Ultra-60/lib/libc_psr.so.1
/usr/platform/SUNW,Ultra-60/lib/libmd5_psr.so.1
Check if all library path's are actually present on the system, otherwise you will need to satisfy the missing dependencies. -
How to programatically get a Java version (Not default one) ?
Hi, Java Guru,
Does anyone know how to programatically get a Java verstion through its full path ?
For example, there are 5 JVM installed on a user's machine:
JRE1
JRE2
JRE3
JRE4
JRE5
How do you know the Java version under JRE3 ?
From command line, you can simply type
JRE3/java -version
But how to programtically ? (I thought about running a system call, then check the standout, but feel it is not reliable, is there any other way to do it ?)
Thanks in advance.No. That is not waht I want. Using System.getProperties() only can get the default Java information.
Assume there are many Java version installed on a user's machine and we know all java Path.
JRE1/bin/java
JRE2/bin/java
JRE3/bin/java
JRE4/bin/java
JRE5/bin/java
JREn/bin/java
JREn/bin/java is the latest one installed, that is, default Java.
I want to know the JRE3 version before I use it, then how do I know JRE3 version PROGRAMTICALLY ?
Anyway, thanks for response. -
How to change default Server NFS version in Solaris 10 ?
How to change default Server NFS version in Solaris 10 ?
I need to change default version of NFS server version, currently i have NFS_SERVER_VERSMAX=2, for changing NFS version i changed this variable in /etc/default/nfs, but still its using version 2,
Please let me know where else i need to change./
Thanks a lot in advance!!!Did you change the /etc/default/nfs on the server or on the client?
What is NFS_SERVER_VERSMIN set to? The NFS server is allowed to use any version in the span of NFS_SERVER_VERSMIN and NFS_SERVER_VERSMAX.
NFS_SERVER_VERSMAX=4
The default of NFS_SERVER_VERSMIN is 2.
And, as mentioned, you will have to restart your NFS server for changes to take effect.

Is it possible (and if so, how) to determine the version of Java used to compile a class file?
I've recently had to install both JDK 1.5 and JDK 1.4 on my system, and although I've got my paths set, etc.
I'd like to check my class files after compiling so I can rest assured that they were compiled with the appropriate version.
Can this be done? How?
Thanks.The answer is yes and no. You can check the VM compability/compliance version of the compiled class. But e.g a JDK 1.5 compiler can compile classes that are compatible with a 1.4 VM (but that doesn't mean that it is guaranteed to execute on that VM without any errors)
