Upgrade from iLife 08 to iLife 11?

So I never updated from iLife 08 to 09. I want to make the jump to iLife 11 for a variety of reasons (manly the upgrades to iMovie) - but I'm really unclear if I need to buy and upgrade to iLife 09 first or can just buy iLife 11.
I even went to an Apple store and asked two of the clerks there who weren't sure!
Does anyone know?
If I have to buy both iLife 09 and iLife 11 and make the Snow Leopard update - it's getting into the price range that I might as well consider getting Final Cut instead.
I'd really prefer to just spend the $50 on iLife 11, if I can.
Thanks.

Hey! I have a Macbook that I bought at the beginning of 09 that has iLife 08. So the iMovie on it was missing some features and I bought iLife 11 today. But when I try to install it, I get the message that my computer is not compatible and I need Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later and mine is 10.5.8
But I talked to the guys at the Apple store and told them what year my Macbook was before I bought iLife11 and they said it will work fine. What do I do? I've updated everything I can. I could go back and talk to them tomorrow, but I had already opened the box. Why would they sell me something I cannot use? Or is there a way for me to update?
Thanks

  • Snow Leopard upgrade from Tiger, forced iLife purchase

Why is Apple making me buy iLife in order to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard? I should be able to decide if I want to buy iLife or not.
Just like with the no FireWire on the unibody MacBook, Apple is making another customer service mistake with this.
I've been using Macs since I bought a Fat Mac in 1984/1985, and have converted dozens of people over the years. It seems in the last few years that I've been more dissatisfied with Apple than ever before.

Except that there are usually several ways to get the upgrade cheaper than the full retail cost. I am legally eligible for the government program, for instance, and another member of my family is eligible for the education price. Sometimes the discount is substantial, sometimes negligible (i.e. you can buy the retail version cheaper at Amazon or via MacConnection, etc).
What I'm not saying very clearly is that it used to be possible for users to skip an upgrade cycle if they wanted to. They could upgrade every other version, for example, in order to save a bit of money or wait for some of their software to be updated for the new version, which sometimes took a while. It seems that Apple is changing their policy on this, and now forcing users to pay for each upgrade, even if they had waited out a cycle.

  • Purch. & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..

    Hi ~
_Purchased & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..._
First I made sure I backed up my 5,500 photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive. (The only downfall to this backing-up process is that I haven't found an easy way to back-up the comments attached to each photo. Any advice on this? Part of the "horror" to losing one's photos is also losing the comments added to them over the years.)
Back to the install... I installed iLife 08 and it installed correctly. I checked to see what version of the applications I have in the dock on my desktop - I figured it would just import existing data (photos, tunes, etc.) into the newer version and replace it in the dock - +it only did this for iDVD+, of course it wasn't that easy for the others.
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
I am most concerned with iPhoto and making sure all the photos AND their comments import correctly into the newer iPhoto 08. I am nervous about this so I want to make sure I do the process correctly.
I also want to make sure my iTunes information imports correctly to the newer version as well.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy

If you backed up the iPhoto Library Folder then you got everything - photos, albums, comments etc

The Dock is not important. Look in your Applications Folder for iPhoto 08. That's where it should be. The Dock is just a shortcut to that. What version is in your Apps folder?
To upgrade a Library from v2 to iPhoto 08 all you do is open the Library with the newer version.

  • Upgrading from iLife '04

I've seen that some people have had problems upgrading from iLife '04. I just wanted to know, is it fully possible? I was planning on getting iLife '06 but I want to make sure it will work.
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes it's possible. I suggest you do a couple of thing prior to upgrading:
1 - do a rebuild of your library (launch iPhoto with the CommandOptionShift keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
2 - move the old library folder to the trash and make duplicate of the newly rebuild one.
3 - run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions.
4 - run the iLife 06 installer and install the applications you want.
5 - update each application to the latest version before using them for the first time.
6 - run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
7 - download and run BatChmod on your iPhoto Library folders, both copies with the settings seen here.
8 - launch iPhoto and it will find your V4 library folder and tell you it needs to be updated. Select yes and go for it.

  • Upgrade from ILife '05 to iLife '06

This question pertains to the entire iLife package (There was no general iLife discussion group, so I am asking my question in this group). If iLife '05 was purchased in December, 2005, is there any upgrade policy to enable iLife '06 to be purchased at a discount? DOES ANYONE KNOW THE ANSWER, PLEASE. Thank you.

I disagree with your contention. Certainly there are people - we both know them - who complain at everything and cannot be satisfied. I am excluding them from what I have to say. There is a RESONABLE time period, say 30 to 60 days, that would be a fair duration to permit those who make a software purchase within this period to upgrade versions at a cost, but not the full price. 30-60 days gives enough time to provide some benefit and, furthermore, it shows that Apple is attempting to be fair. In my case, the purchase for iLife '05 was December 24 at the Apple store. Between that date and the '06 announcement, there was no time to do anything but barely open the box. I feel 'had' by Apple promoting iLife '05 for Christmas giving and then, a couple of weeks later, making it essentially obsolete; what they have done is basically unfair and, according to my values, a form of cheating. My point has a lot of merit.
I have a business to run, so I can't afford the time to pursue any more discussions about this topic. However, I can tell you that I am far fairer to MY customers that Apple has been to me.

  • UPGRADING FROM 10.3.9

I have iMac G4 800Mhz running 10.3.9 and would like to get to 10.5 so I can use iLife '09. I just bought a new Nikon camera which takes raw pictures (NEF format) that my current version of iPhoto in iLife '06 does not recognize, among other DVD related reasons. Can I get there from here directly with the 10.5/iLife '09 package deal or do I need to go to 10.4 first? thanks in advance.

Here's a link showing the requirements for various versions of iLife (however, iLife 09 is not listed) http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27615
Assuming your Mac meets the hardware requirements, you can upgrade your system directly to 10.5, skipping 10.4.

  • Want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I spent over an hour through the apple store web site and cant find a way to upgrade directly from Mac OS 10.4 Tiger to the latest Snow Leopard version.
The Apple web site gives only one purchase possibility : to upgrade from Leopard 10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6. But how to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard ?

this has been oft asked and answered. you can buy a Macbox set which will give you snow leopard, ilife and and iwork. or you can buy a $29 standalong snow leoaprd dvd although there is a big disagreement on the board whether using it to go from tiger to snow leopard directly violates ULA (I think it does). but the actual disk is the same as in the macbox set and either one will upgrade you to SL.

  • What happens to iweb-built site when I upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.3), and subsequently upgrade to 10.6.8 or even 10.7? Will fonts stay the same? Will layout change? Or anything else change? Thanks

What happens to iweb-build site when I upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.3) and subsequently update that to 10.6.8 or even to 10.7? Evidently iweb has been discontinued. I have version 3.0.3 of iweb now but understand that there's been an update for OS 10.6 so same question goes for this update.
Will fonts change? Will layout change? Will widgets still work? Links? Will Google Analytics PlugIn still work?
(Since MobileMe is disappearing, I now save iweb site to local folder on my computer, then upload it to GoDaddy using Cyberduck. I run Google Analytics plug in on folder before its uploaded.)
My computer, MacBook Pro came with iweb, which has been updated to 3.0.3. Since iweb is discontinued, will upgrade of operating system just ignore iweb so that iweb will run the same as before? Or will it wipe it out? Or change how it currently works (questions above).
    Thanks

As you now know iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two features will be broken.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: iW14 - Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
NOTE: the iLife 11 boxed version Is no longer available at the online Apple Store.  To get a copy you'll have to try Amazon.com or eBay.com.

  • Upgrading from OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard

Hello, I've heard mixed reviews from people at the Apple store to people on the street whether it's possible to upgrade directly from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. Below are my specs, and I'd love to hear a second opinion from someone!
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version: 1.7f10

You should be able to upgrade the OS X to Snow Leopard with the less costly upgrade DVD
from Apple; that won't give you the newer iLife, or iWorks, but it would be a full install disc.
The computer should see an upgrade in RAM, too; 2GB probably is minimal, and this can be
a concern if you also have a jam-packed hard disk drive and no working free space for the
system or applications to use the OS X's automatic Virtual Memory, based on available space.
An upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard will invite issues and problems from third-party
applications not written to run in the later OS X version; you may have to buy/upgrade them, too.

Anyway, the upgrade by itself on a new or 'secure erased' HDD may work just fine.
The hardware upgrade suggested (RAM, larger hard disk drive) would help. Also,
if there are any pending Firmware updates available, be sure to install them, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

I was just wondering will my mac be able to upgrade from tiger to snow leapord without the full box set. i dont have the money to purchase the box set in full but i just purchased snow leapord and i plan on purchasing ilife and iwork separately and installing them all at one time.

Welcome to Apple Discussions Doctor Wagner.
I suggest starting a new topic with your question. Usually topics focus on just a single person's question. People may skip this topic if they don't think they have anything to contribute but those people might know the answer to your question which would be more noticeable in its own topic. This especially applies to topics that have been marked as solved.

In addition, Snow Leopard will not work in all computers that are running Tiger. Make sure you double check those specifications.

You can use the less expensive ($30) upgrade DVD though Apple may try to sell you the full box set (unless they have abandoned the idea) which includes iLife.  They may also try to sell you Lion so come up with a good reason (e.g., lots of PPC generation software) why you can't use Lion yet.

  • Want to upgrade from imovie 5.0.2 to 6.0

I have been searching the apple download pages to upgrade my imovie 5.0.2 to 6.0. I have only found upgrades from 6.0 to 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 but nothing to get me to 6.0. Am I missing something? Please help, thanks!

You can't go from version 5 to version 6 via updates.
To get version 6 you must purchase iLife 06.
    No other way.
