Upgrade from Windows 8.1 to 10 fails with an error code, at the very end of processing

I tried to upgrade to Windows 10.  It went through the whole process, and upon reboot at the very end it failed.  It threw this message:  I searched on these terms and couldn't find an answer.  My machine is brand new.  I haven't installed much on it at all, figuring it's better to wait until I've gotten Windows 10 installed. Any ideas?

So it looked like I was missing a KB update, the 3035584, which enables the upgrade.  I performed some Windows 8.1 updates and got everything set up. I ran the upgrade to Windows 10.  It went all the way through to the reboot, taking about 20~30 mins.  At this point it asks me to confirm installation, and I select "OK" and it goes for another 20 mins.  It proceeds about 10% of the way there, and then it reboots.  The next thing I see on my screen is "Restoring your previous version of Windows". I'm back to Windows 8.1 again.  I log in... and same error message as shown above. Frankly, I can't understand what is causing this... and why Windows can't "figure out" if my machine is good to go for a full installation in just 10 mins or so.  Why go through all of these gyrations for 45 mins only to reject the whole process?

  • Upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 failed with C0000022, unable to repair or rollback

    I attempted to upgrade my desktop PC from Windows 8 (Pro, x64) to Windows 8.1, using the "Update via the Windows Store" download method. The update failed, and now I can't use the PC. I cannot find any way to repair the Windows 8.1 installation;
    nor can I find any way to roll back to the old (functional) Windows 8 installation. I've searched the web for answers, and chatted with MS Support staff, and still no resolution yet. Any assistance to regain a functional system would be greatly appreciated.
    Details
    The PC is a decent spec box. No longer high-spec, but still well above the minimum requirements:
    6Gb DDR3-1333 RAM
    Intel Core i5-750 CPU
    256Gb SSD drive as the primary Windows system partition (C:) with plenty of free space
    1Tb HDD as a second partition for User data (D:) with plenty of free space
    DVD drive (E:)
    NVIDIA GTX260 graphics card
    Logitech USB keyboard
    Logitech USB optical mouse
    An older webcam & printer that required some manual driver updates to function on Win8 (everything else worked out-of-the-box).
    The PC was running Windows 8 Pro (64-bit, clean install) without any issues, for at least four months prior to the upgrade. Before that, it was running Windows 7 (x64, probably Ultimate but I forget) again without any issues.
    All Windows versions are legit MSDN installs (I am a subscriber). I've also seen other install issues in this forum related to ZoneAlarm - I have never installed ZoneAlarm so that is not a factor here.
    The Win8 to Win8.1 Upgrade
    A couple days prior to the upgrade, I enabled Client Hyper-V on the box. Did all the restarts & everything, and it looked like it worked successfully. Windows 8 still functioned as expected afterwards. I never got around to setting up an actual VM though.
    Probably a red herring; just mentioning it in case it could be relevant.
    Immediately before doing the upgrade, I manually snapped a System Restore point.
    Installing the upgrade seemed to take an incredibly long time. I think it is supposed to restart a couple of times... it was maybe six hours or so between the first and second restart.
    After the second restart, it flashed an error message for a split second. I was able to catch the message (on a subsequent restart) by filming the monitor & freeze-framing. The message is "Fatal error C0000022 applying update operation 2 of 758
    (amd64_ava...)". I'm curious why this is dying on and amd64 file, for an Intel chip?
    After flashing that message, it proceeds to a screen where it says "Getting Windows ready. Don't turn off your computer". I left it on that screen for at least 12 hours, but it never proceeded or changed. Strong suspicion it has locked up at this
    point.
    Subsequent restarts just result in it locking up at the same point.
    Loading the WinRE from the original Windows 8 install disc does not help. The snapped restore point can't be found; and the "Startup Repair" option fails with the message ""Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC". The logfile SrtTrail.txt
    states "Root cause found: The operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair" which seems to indicate the system now thinks it is 8.1, not 8.
    Loading the WinRE from a Windows 8.1 install disc (MSDN) does not help. The snapped restore point can't be found; and the "Startup Repair" option fails with the message ""Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC". The logfile SrtTrail.txt
    states "Root cause found: Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully" which doesn't seem like a helpful error message.
    How can I get a functional OS back (either finish the upgrade, or roll it back)? What additional diagnostic steps could I perform that would assist in finding & fixing the root cause here?
    A minor version bump of an OS should not brick a functional system! I would prefer not to do a full clean install as that would mean days of reinstalling & reconfiguring all my other (non-app store) apps, settings, etc... but if there is no other option,
    it is a last resort. Of course if it comes to that, I may as well just try Linux instead...

    OK, so Microsoft support were eventually able to resolve this. Details:
    Apparently a few other tools are also available in WinRE (including RegEdit). This can be useful for connecting to a hive from the previous O/S, to inspect keys etc.
    Windows 8.1 really, REALLY does not want to let you boot into Safe Mode, especially if it thinks you are part-way through an install. Usual boot-time key combinations would not work. Options from install disks would not work. The only way we could make
    this happen was (on tech support's explicit instructions) to
    physically yank the power cable out of the box, while it is booting, three times in a row. Apparently that is the magic combination to fool the system into loading safe mode.
    Once in Safe mode, tech support went through the process of disabling/enabling devices and services one at a time, to identify the root cause: the NVidia driver. The version I had installed was from October 2013... foolishly I had assumed it would support
    Windows 8.1 because the driver was only 2 months old, but apparently not. Anyway, updating the driver to the latest version resolved the issue, and (eventually) allowed the install to complete & get a functional system back.
    I'm recording all the details here, in the hope that it may help someone else (particularly if you are not fortunate enough to have access to Tech Support).
    Also, if any Microsoft staff are reading this, I would like to make the following points:
    Yank the power cable out during the boot, three times in a row, just to access Safe Mode?
    Are you freakin kidding me? It is 2014 and this is your latest, greatest flagship product. I should not have to risk physical damage to the power supply or PC itself JUST TO ACCESS SAFE MODE. Yes, you should be embarrassed.
    Something I mentioned earlier that I want to revisit - a minor OS version upgrade should not brick a user's system. If there is a chance of that happening, you should take reasonable steps to assist the user in preventing that from happening. Using
    this example, the first step in the upgrade process could've checked the computer for all the installed drivers & their versions, and then compared them against a list of known drivers & versions for compatibility, warning the user where appropriate
    before proceeding with the install ("your xxx driver is known to be incompatible with Win8.1, upgrade it then try again" if it's on the blacklist; maybe "your xxx driver is not known to be compatible with Win8.1,
    proceed at your own risk" if it is not on the whitelist). I accept that you cannot hope to cover every possible version of every possible driver, and that it is (theoretically) not your job to ensure other folks software is compatible with the OS. However
    you could at least make the effort to blacklist/whitelist the obvious ones... with graphics cards you really only have a choice of NVidia, ATI and Intel. Helping users to avoid bricking their systems will at least make your software seem less user-hostile.

  • Windows Server 2012 Windows Backup failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).

    The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares.
    When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:
    “failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”
    Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.
     This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.
      Then the error changed to this:
    “failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

    We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is.
    Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

    We are trying to back up folders/files from 2 local drives (C: & D:), both of which have only 10% space used, and 100 GB free.
    We are attempting to back the files up to a Remote Shared File (and there is 100+ GB free space out there).
      If we try another network location, we receive the exact same error.
     This is Windows Server 2012, not running Hyper-V and is a physical server not a VM.
    Thank you for the link.

    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

    Hi,<BR>While adding/Changing member in planning it gives the error "The SQL operation failed with an error code: 0" and not allowing any of the changes. I am not able to open the forms giving the error as "Fiscal Days Input - is invalid". Interestingly one form was opening, when the Page selection is changed it also started giving error as like "Fisacal Days Input(form name) - is invalid check log for details". <BR>Pls advice us that what is this error and how to resolve this.<BR><BR>And Which log is to be referred for the details.<BR><BR>Thanks<BR>Ravi

    If a form is invalid it generally means that one of the dimension references is missing.<BR><BR>Can you get in to edit the form?<BR>If you can, see if you can preview it. I suspect you will not be able to.<BR><BR>If not, check all dimension boxes have at least one member against them.<BR>If you have multiple rows and/or columns check all of them too.<BR><BR>I've had a couple of forms in dev "drop" a dimension reference but only once or twice so not enough to reproduce or find out what is causing it. Each time I got the "form invalid" error message and managed to fix it.<BR><BR>Hope this helps.<BR>

  • At DI R3trans fails with this error code ORA-12545, but CI runs

    Hello Gurus,
    We have our BW System on two instances with a separated oracle database server.
    Last week the system was unreachable and we must restarted it hard.
    After that, the Listener could  started and runs. The DB could started, mounted and opened successfully.
    Now we have a special problem.
    The central instance can connect at startup to the database. But the dialog instance not.
    The DI get the following error:
    |> R3trans -x
    This is R3trans version 6.14 (release 701 - 12.06.09 - 15:20:00).
    2EETW169 no connect possible: "DBMS = ORACLE                           --- dbs_ora_tnsname = 'BW2'"
    R3trans finished (0012).
    The trans.log entry are:

    A telnet connection test to port 1527 are also unsuccessful.
    But sporadicly the telnet or R3trans connection are successful, but the second check are unsuccessful.
    We have checked the telnet connection to another oracle database server (ERP) at port 1527 and it works.
    The CI have some entry's in ST22 with DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR --> ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLE.
    Are someone known something about this issue?
    regards
    Chris

    @ Sunny Pahuja:
    We checked sapmnt.
    Sapmnt is common on CI and DI. It was never mounted on DB. But DB runs perfectly until this issue.
    @ Ankit Gupta
    We checked the configuration of listener.
    It is the same like the listener configuration of our ERP system with CI, DI and DB on separate Servers, too.

  • Pthread_create() fails with no error code

    Hi,
    following piece of code works well under Linux and is used to create a new thread:
    rc=pthread_attr_init(&tattr);
    rc=pthr ead_attr_setdetachstate(&tattr,PTHREAD_CREATE_DETACHED);
    rc=pthread_create(&thread1,&tattr,&WatchdogThread,(void*)&MyPID);
    Here the call of pthread_create() fails with a return code of -1 but errno is 0 so that I don't have an idea what the problem could be.
    Does anybody have an idea?
    Kind regards
    Oxy

    #define _REENTRANT
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <pthread.h>
    #include <errno.h>
    void*
    func(void *arg)
            return arg;
    main()
            int rc;
            pthread_t tid;
            errno = 0;
            rc = pthread_create(&tid, NULL, func, NULL);
            printf("rc=%d, errno=%d\n", rc, errno);
    }The above test progam works for me when I compile it with
    % gcc -o p p.c -lpthread
    % p
    rc=0, errno=0Omitting the -lpthread reproduces something similar to you problem (reason: the empty pthread stub
    subroutines from libc.so are used):
    % gcc -o p p.c
    % p
    rc=-1, errno=0

  • Upgraded from Elements 9 to 12 since upgrading from Windows 7 to 8.1 - Issues with my old psd's.

    Hi - in regards to moving up to the newer version of Elements, I find that all the psd files I was in the middle of working with (all of them multi-layered) don't seem to be associated with photoshop anymore.  When I double-click them, windows asks me what app I'd like to open them with.  If I open photoshop I can open the psd files from there, however.
    I made the change from Elements 9 to 12 because after installing Windows 8.1 the older Elements got weird and "buggy."  I actually would've preferred to keep 9 (so if anyone's aware of "fixes" or "upgrades" for 9 that help it to work better with Windows 8.1, please let me know)!
    Also, I see that the old layers panel, where I can see all my different layers and move them around to front or back, isn't there.  I did see that it's possible to select "Layers" from the menu, but it's greyed out.
    I'm wondering if I somehow "lost" something switching over, and I wonder if there's something I can do to get my psd's to open in Elements more-or-less like they used to.
    I should say that I jumped from Elements 9 up to 11, so I do realize there have of course been many many changes in the interim (I'd previously made the jump from 5 up to 9) and it'll take time for me to relearn, but this particular issue seems like it might be more of a glitch than me not knowing the new version yet.
    I should also mention that the psd files don't have an Elements icon anymore - just a white square.
    Thanks!!!

    If Layers is greyed out it possibly means that you are in Quick Mode. Select 'Expert' and all the options should become available.
    Try permanently associating psd files with C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 12\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe and see if that fixes the issue. Instructions here - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/choose-programs-windows-uses-default.

  • Windows 2008 R2 state backup fails with various errors

    Since a few years we are using DPM to backup our servers but since some time the system state of the server where DPM is installed started to fail.
    I was trying to do system state backup using command line windows backup:
    wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:C:
    and it fails every time with different error (last 5 tries):
    1. Error in backup of C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests\x86_microsoft-windows-w..pdateclient-activex_31bf3856ad364e35_7.6.7600.256_none_09f272fb52ab0c3f.manifest during read: Error [0x80070002] The system cannot find the file specified.

    5. Error in backup of C:\Windows\System32\ActionCenter.dll during write: Error [0x80070002] The system cannot find the file specified.
    That's a Windows 2008 R2 server with DPM and OM servers installed.
    The system state backup was doing fine for 2 or 3 years and suddenly it just stopped.:/

    Hi,
    It seems that we cannot use a volume that is included in the backup as a storage location, please backup to another volume to see the result.
    You could refer to the article below to troubleshoot the issue:
    Reasons why the error Enumeration of the files failed may occur during System State backup

    In additional, as the server with DPM installed, I suggest you also ask for help from DPM forums:

    Appreciate your suggestion Dave,
    Any idea what could be cause of this failure.?Do you see anything from the CBS logs.
    This server attached with SNAP drive luns,is there something or SQL application preventing this installation ?
    After reboot it revert the installation...it shows "Failure config service pack..reverting changes,do not not turn off your computer".
    Surprisingly it happens both of our SQL data base server.
    Do you think Increasing MaxNumFilters to
    14 shall work ?

  • Using Windows 7 Backup (with 3.0 TB drive) the backup fails with an error code of (0x8078002A)

    I have tried for over a month to back up my laptop to a new external 3TB drive (DWC130).  I have reformatted it, changed my windows backup settings, and read as much as I could about this issue and still have had no success.  I have reformatted the drive; I have allowed Windows 7 (64-bit) to back up with its own settings; I have read forums all over and there has been no answer provided that solved this issue.  I am hoping someone from Toshiba or this form can provide some direction.

       Error code 0x8100002F and or error code 0x80070002 when you back up files in Windows 7
