Upgrade Java Swing Project

Hi Everyone,
I am looking forward for some guidance from all you guys here.
I have been assigned the work of upgrading Java Swing project. The upgrading also involved some improvements in look and feel of the tool.
Currently the tool looks very simple/basic and needs some good over-haul.
As basically I am a J2EE guy, I dont have much idea about the Swing Open-source API's that I can utilize for the same.
If anyone has good idea about the API's that can be utilized or suggestions for the improvement of the tool look wise then please let me know.
Thanks,
Gaurav

The Synth Look and Feel.
"Creating a custom look and feel, or modifying an existing one, can be a daunting task. The <a href="http://download.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/javax/swing/plaf/synth/package-summary.html">javax.swing.plaf.synth</a> package can be used to create a custom look and feel with much less effort. You can create a Synth look and feel either programatically or through the use of an external XML file. The discussion below is devoted to the creation of a Synth look and feel using an external XML file. Creating a Synth L&F programatically is discussed in the API documentation."
There are also a number of existing custom PLAFs. E.G. See this excellent summary at SO on the thread Look and feel in java.

  • Java Swing Project

    Im totally new to Swing, and fairly new to the java programming language as well. Could anyone point me in the right direction to a good beginner tutorial. I have tried the ones on the sun website and googled a few others but none really help me with what i am trying to do, which is try to build a calculator using swing. I am trying to display it in the top left hand corner. Managed to get it working , but the layout things really confuse me, so i got what i wanted by allowing the window not to be resized....but now im not sure if i can add to it to get it to where i want now :(. Any help gratefully received!

    Oh, I thought you meant the top-left corner of the monitor. With questions like this there is only one way to get the best possible answers. But that one way asks you to do a little bit of work. Create the simplest possible example program that demonstrates your problem and post that. Then forum members can run it and see what you mean.

  • Cann't launch the ADF Swing Project

    Hello,
    I have created java-application(swing,adf bc) in Jdev10.1.3, and created the Java Web Start(JNLP) files for the application ,run ant target: sign. it created all files ,build ok.
    but when I run the local.html in the Jdev1013, it open IE window, then I clicke the Launch JClient Link and it asks me to download the local.jsp file or open the file.
    If I download , the file "local.jsp.jnlp" would be saved, if I open, it display beblow:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="Big5" ?>
    - <jnlp spec="1.0" codebase="http://127.0.0.1:8991/TestJClient-View-context-root">
    - <information>

    </information>

    <extension name="common" href="localmt.jsp" />
    </resources>
    <application-desc main-class="test.view.test" />
    </jnlp>
    I review the local.jsp in Jdev1013, find some error "should not exist the element jnlp" about below:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="Big5"?>
    <jnlp spec="1.0" codebase="<%= buf.toString() %> ">
    Maybe that is jdev1013 bug.
    Anyone know the reason or how to deal with the error ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    you are mixing releases here. You start with JClient in JDeveloper 10.1.2 and end up with ADF Swing in 10.1.3. Now what is the release you have the problem with. For 10.1.2 we have a whitepaper explaining how to use Java WebStart. We didn't upgrade this paper for 10.1.3, but I get Web Start deployment working when i tried it last time in JDeveloper 10.1.3.
    Note that no file should be downloaded to teh client and instead the JSP file should be executed to generate the JNLP file

    You can't just display data from a text file in a JTable. You have you understand the structure of the data so that you can parse the data and create a table model that can access the data in a row/column format. Here is an example of a simple program that does this:

  • Scope and Objectives of making java swing scientific calculator

    I am going to write code for java swing scientific calculator..... can any body help me to write scope and objectives of this project.... please please :-(

    If this is for school work, then defining the scope is part of the problem. The only advice I will give you is that you only need to implement what the assignment specifies. It is probably intentionally vague so you can bite off way too much and not finish -- failure should teach you something too.
    I had just such an assignment in my software engineering class in college -- create a cross compiler from X to Y where X and Y where known instruction sets. That was the entire assignment -- plus the instruction sets for X and Y. My team looked at the allotted time and resources availabe and decided to do a minimal implementation.
    We where the only team to complete the assignment and all recieved A's because we accurately implemented the required solution and were able to evaluate the real problem--resource allotment--accurately.
    Each other team tried to add "extras" that would "guarantee" them an A grade. In actuallity it was just a lot more work than they could do though and it hurt them in the long run--No matter how good the work was to the point they had at the end of the semester, each student in the other teams only recieved a B or less grade in the class due to failure on that project. Resource allocation and planning--only you can do that for your team/project.

    if I don't find a better solution I'll try your 2nd option but what do you mean by "combo" update?
    My understanding is to simply insert the OS 10.5 installation CD, reinstall the OS and the just keep updating it via the OS SSoftware update panel and stop untill I see the scary Java 8 update. Is that what you meant?
    While you can do it that way, the combo update picks up operating system updates through a collection of releases. When dealing with operating system upgrades, I've found using the combo updates to be more reliable than Software Update, as sometimes Software Update doesn't apply updates correctly, and weird things can happen. Doesn't happen often though, thankfully.
    So the OS X 10.5.5 Combo update contains all updates between 10.5.0 and 10.5. The 10.5.8 combo update contains the updates from 10.5 thru 10.8. Here are the updates:
    10.5 combo update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL692
    10.8 combo update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
    If you go down the combo path, repair permissions before and after doing each update. Then do Software Update for any other non-OS X updates, and don't apply the Java Update 8.

    You find examples and code by searching the internet, not by using forums.
    Start with The Java Tutorials - it has trails for the bulk of the Java functionality.
    See the trail 'How to Write an Undoable Edit Listener'
    http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/uiswing/events/undoableeditlistener.html
    You learn by DOING - not by reading. Actually DO the tutorial example and try to understand WHAT it does and HOW it does it.
    Then search for other tutorial trails that are of interest.

  • How to play flash files in java swings

    Hi All ,
    I have a requirement in java swings , i want to play advertisements ( flash files in swings )
    can any one provide any example for the above requirement .
    Thank you all for sharing knowledge in this great forum .
    Jerry

    I have a java desktop application which is actually a
    kiosk application. I have to run some promotion
    videos in my application when no user is using the
    kiosk.Will the kiosks all be running the same OS?
    The reason I ask is that JMF is available in both
    standard and performance pack versions. The PP
    provides a wider variety of formats, but runs only
    on Win. and *nix.
    videos can be any avi or neother which can easily be
    played in java applications.That is handy. The JMF standard pack provides
    support for a number of flavors of AVI, but not all.
    What is the best way for me to play video files in a
    java application??I would suggest checking if the 'standard' version
    of the JMF can play* the current AVI's. If it can, use
    the standard JMF for the project, if not, look to
    converting the AVI's to something the JMF can
    deal with, this might involve storing the video or
    audio of the AVI's in a different format - you
    might have to experiment to get the right
    combination, but the JMF 'supported formats'
    is a good guide.
    http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/formats.html
    * To check if JMF can play them, install it and
    try loading the AVI's in JMStudio - the default
    player.

  • Chess: Java Swing problem!! Help need

    Hi, I have just learn java swing and now creating a chess game. I have sucessfully create a board and able to display chess pieces on the board. By using JLayeredPane, I am able to use drag and drop for the piece. However, there is a problem which is that I can drop the chess piece off the board and the piece would disappear. I have try to solve this problem by trying to find the location that the chess piece is on, store it somewhere and check if the chess piece have been drop off bound. However, I could not manage to solve it. Also, I am very confuse with all these layer thing.
    Any suggestion would be very helpful. Thanks in advance

    I wonder if you are biting off a little more than you can chew. This seems like a big project for a beginning coder. Anyway, my suggestions can only be general since we only have general information:
    1) Break the big problem down into little pieces. Get the pieces working, then put them together.
    2) Make sure your program logic is separate from your GUI.
    3) If still having problems, post an SSCCE. See this link to tell you how:
    http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html
    4) And as camikr would say (and flounder just said): next time, post this in the Swing forum.
    Good luck!

  • JAVA / SWING apps, font AA / LaF KDE 4.3

    Hi Everyone,
    I know the title is terrible, but here is my problem:
    I am using Netbeans for most of my development projects. I am very happy with it; however, the look and feel of Netbeans (and most other Java apps, such as FreeMind for example) is appalling and does not integrate into my KDE 4.3 desktop at all. I understand that you can start netbeans with certain options to change the look and feel to GTK, but the fonts still look jagged.
    I followed this forum post http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=72892 and tried to set the JRE / JAVA options globally, so that all java apps start with GTK laf and AA. However, non of the methods described work / netbeans overrides them (?).
    But really, the biggest problem are the ugly fonts. Java / SWING apps do not seem to recognize my KDE settings for AA and font style at all. And non of the Cl options work to fix it.
    Does anyone have any tips or tricks to fix any of these issues I am having with the combination Java / Swing / KDE / NB?
    Running:
    Archlinux (duh)
    KDE 4.3 / qt-gtk-engine
    sun-jdk 1.6uX
    Netbeans 6.7.1
    Thanks!
    KnY

    I added what I knew about improving Sun java fonts to the wiki:  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Jav … _-_Sun_JRE.  You may want to try other fonts than B&H's Lucida.  See the section in the wiki article about changing the default fonts by editing 'fontconfig.properties'.
