Upgrade to a new Mac

Are you able to turn in you old powerbook, for a discount on a new one?

Hi Fred,
No you can't. What you can do though is sell the old PowerBook privately (eBay, Classified ads in Mac magazines etc) and then use that money towards the cost of a new one.

  • Is it worth the upgrade to a new Mac Pro?

I have a question about the new Mac Pro. I have a 1st Generation Mac Pro (the one released in 2006). I primarily use it to do a lot of motion graphics and video editing/effects. I use Final Cut Pro, Motion (I have FCS 2), After Effects, Cinema 4D, etc. Would it be worth upgrading to the newer Mac Pro? Would I notice much difference in rendering speeds, working with 3D, etc?
My current Mac Pro has 5 GB of Ram, and the NVidia GeForce 8800 GT graphics card; 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Processors
I'm really debating on selling my Mac Pro and purchase one of the 2009 Mac Pros but only if I would really notice much of an overall difference.
Thanks in advance for any answers and input!

Hi, it really depends on what you plan to do with the computer. If running windows in 64 bit mode is a worry for you, then I would trade your 2006 for at least a 2008 mac pro. The Harpertown mac pros are still considered by many just as fast as the 2009, if not faster in some things. Remember, it is hyper threading that gives the 2009 their power and the speed of 1066mhz DDR3 memory.
If you plan on just using the mac pro for light video editing and encoding and using pro apps, the 2008 mac pro will be more than enough. I had a 2006 mac pro going from a G5 Quad. Once I found out that I really enjoy running windows on it and the thought of a new cinema display, I decided to trade my 2006 for the 2008. Sometime in the next few years, I will then trade up my harpertown for the Nehalem mac pro and so forth.
You are right! very few people these days have 2000+ dollars to spend outright on a computer, but I got a great deal on my 2006 trade which was 1850 - the 2008 3.0 harpertown for 2300.00

  • To upgrade or buy new mac.

i need to get some opinion from u guys out there. i'm using an 12.1" ibook g4 512ram for 2 years. Things are fine but lately i feels it is getting slow (maybe the softwares are getting more demanding). I thinking should i up the ram to 1.5 and add in the leopard software or should i sell the ibook and get a new mac. upgrading the ibook will cost about ~1000 rm. trading the ibook can fetch about 2000rm so i cant really decide. it is cheaper to upgrade but in the long run? can anyone give their opinion here

That sounds like a good option--there is nothing wrong with Tiger, and there have been some problems with Leopard--just peruse the Leopard forum some time. You may as well do your mobil computing and not be worrying about which printers will work or whether or not your menu bar is translucent and all of that stuff. After I upgraded my MBP to Leopard, the free printer that I got with the MBP would no longer work. Eventually I imagine there will be a driver, but I have encountered more than one 3rd party that is not yet up to date on OS 10.5, and I imagine that others will take a while too. So it could be a hassle if you have a lot of older software. As for free upgrades, I have no idea, but I think the problem would be waiting for them to have upgrades available.
One thing you can do is to use the free application WhatSize to check on what is using up your hard drive space.
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/
Sometimes logs and caches can get out of hand and use up space and slow you down. But the additional RAM should give you a big boost in performance.
As to iMac vs. a MacBook, that's hard to say. It's really up to you. But since you need to save up a few bucks first, you will have time to mull it over. You might browse both of those forums for a while and then maybe ask your question on one of them if you are still undecided.
    Good luck!

  • HT5037 I keep getting this message despite already upgrading on my new Mac.To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.

    I just purchased a new Mac OS x 10.9.1.
I'm trying to move over files from Passport which was my backup for my old Mac.   Not all my photos transported over.  I'm missing about 3 years worth.   I followed the instructions for the iphoto 11 upgrader for the library,  download, utility etc.  But no go.
Now Iphoto -- the app -- wont open at all without thisk pop up:
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.

    But
Then you do not have an iPhoto library - it is not possible to move "some" of an iPhoto library - it is a single entity and must be treates as such
Exactly how step by step did you do this?
I was able to move virtually all my photos and "events" prior to 2010.
I did create a copy of my old iPhoto library from the Passport drive on the desktop but that to gives me the "to open..."message when I tried to open it.
So run the library upgrader (applications folder ==> utilities) against tha tlibrary and then open it using iPhoto 9.5.x

  • Installing CS5 Upgrade on Brand New Mac

I installed my recent upgrade of Photoshop for Mac on my new MacBook Pro.  Understandably, the dialogue box appeared asking for the serial number to the Photoshop I happend to be upgrading.  BUT THEN, once I consulted the original box to my Photoshop CS3 Estended, selected that product, and entered its serial number, both WITH and/WITHOUT the hyphens, The page puts up a caution sign, saying that it isn't a serial number for a qualifying product.  WRONG, it is, HONESTLY, a qualifying serial number, which I bought directly from Adobe.  Now I'm just stuck, and cannot use my legitimate product.

    Several possibilities:
1.— You are making an error when typing the old serial number, such as typing an O (letter O) for 0 (zero), or viceversa, or 5 (five) for S (letter S), etc.; or
2.— The old version may be Photoshop Extended and the new one Standard, in which case you need to contact Customer Service for new serial numbers; or
3.— You are attempting to upgrade from the whole CS3 Suite to just the Photoshop CS5 point application, in which case you are severely out of luck, as that is not allowed.  You can only upgrade to the whole suite again, not to an individual point application.
As the previous post implies, you need to contact Adobe customer service.  You are not addressing Adobe here in the user to user forums.

  • Upgrading to a new Mac

I currently own a PPC G5 Mac, 2.7 GHz with 7 GB of ram.; 512 L2 Cache. I recently added a second internal HD (Hitachi 500 GB, 7200 rpm). I also added a OWC 1 TB external FW 400 hard drive.
Having recently read in MacWorld that the PPC will not be supported in the future, I’m thinking about upgrading to an IntelXeon/Quad-core 2.66 GHz. However, I do have some questions I need answered first…
    1) Can I still utilize my OWC 1 TB FW 400 external drive with a the new Intel machine?
    2) Obviously I have a ton of data and apps on the PPC. My Address book is packed. Can I transfer ALL of this data/apps to the New Intel Machine. (I have a Macbook Pro and I recall that I was able to “load” up my MB Pro utilizing an Apple “short cut” which allowed me to transfer everything over, no problem.) Can I do with the New Mac what I was able to do with my Mac Book Pro. Or, can I just take my FW 400 External Hard Drive and copy my files from it to the new machine? Thank you everyone.

With 10.6 I couldn't migrate anything over that didn't make my MP run worse. You'll have 10.6.1 so maybe the situation will be better. In any case, don't erase any of your G5 drives until you feel perfectly confident that everything is well with the MP and all of what you need is transferred over. I would even make two copies of your G5 drive just in case you had to fall back on one. Things like Address Book are very easy to transfer. There an option within the program to export the info there and in the new Address Book to go looking for just that info.
Good luck, take it slow and don't make any irrevocable mistakes, like erasing your old drives before you know there's nothing of importance there anymore.
Edit: I'd take the chance of putting your main G5 drive alongside your new MP drive in the MP. You'll find that drag and drop works for many of your apps and other things and works just fine that way. You'll know right away what will be able to work or not. Migration Assistant is just too broad a stroke in my opinion. Just don't by any means try to start from that G5 drive.

  • User Upgradability on the new Mac Pro?

I understand that one can configure the new Mac Pro from around $3,000 to almost $10,000. But can one buy the base unit and then upgrade parts later on? For example, RAM upgrade, CPU upgrade, graphic card upgrade, etc.
Is the Mac Pro as quiet as a Mac Mini?

The tear-down images and data on the Xeon E5-xxxxV2 series processors look like the cpu can be upgraded by the user.  All E5 processors use the FCLGA - 2011 socket, same pin-out so should be replaceable:
    1620V2 - 4 core - 3.7 GHZ - $294
    1650V2 - 6 core - 3.5 GHz - $583
    1680V2 - 8 core - 3.0 GHz - $1723
    2697V2 - 12 core - 2.7 GHz - $2618
Interesting tidbit - the max addressable memory for the 4, 6, 8 core models is 256 GB, while that of the 12 core is 768 GB.

  • Migrated account denies access to Mountain Lion upgrades on a new Mac Mini

Just yesterday I bought a new Mac Mini. It is on OSX 10.8.1. I set it up, then imported all my accounts from my early 08 MacBook Pro running lion and removed the temporary admin account on the Mac Mini.  When I tried to update all the software, I was told I need 10.8.2 for iPhoto, however, the system does not offer an upgrade to 10.8.2. I scanned in my receipts to the up-to-date program but they've denied me twice saying that I don't have a qualifying system. Here's the thing. My account is US, and I live in Japan. I bought the device from an authorized seller, but maybe because the receipt is in Japanese they won't qualify me. I don't think it's fair to have to buy the OS after buying the device that is running it just to be able to upgrade. What do I need to do to keep my mountain lion Mac mini up-to-date?

Your computer needs a special OS X update that it's not available. Wait until Apple releases it

    777iPod,
This is a good guide to help with kernel panics: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
I think it's Support policy, even prior to an archive and install, to have a user first remove any third party RAM and third party devices to verify that none of those are causing the kernel panics. We weren't told if that was done, but I've assumed so. If third party RAM was allowed to remain installed, it is not unusual for it to be the source of kernel panics.
I don't know if it's part of the Support checklist, but when making changes like that, or when replacing hardware or software in general, I have always followed that up with a PRAM reset. I realize that usually Macs will recognize (plug & play) such changes, but my experience has been that it's better to just do the PRAM reset, or else be prepared to shut down and then do a fresh startup so that the system can do its usual self-testing that is performed during startup.
If it was an archive and install that Support recommended to jmanwee, and if it did not resolve the issue, I believe their next suggestion will be to erase and install.
Once third party devices and software have been eliminated as the potential cause of the kernel panics, I imagine Support will have no problem arranging for hardware repairs.
I'm probably overlooking something, but referring to the above link should help anyone get their situation resolved.

  • How do instal an upgrade on a new Mac?

    Hope this the right Forum.
I'm about to buy a new Macintosh and I want to just purchase an upgrade to CS6 from CS5 on the new computer. I've already got CS5 installed on 2 computers. What do I need to do to get CS6 on the new computer?

Just install CS6 and it will ask for your CS5 serial number for verification at some point. If it throws any warnings, you may have to deactivate one of your CS5 installs at some point to allow verification and activation. Any otehr issues will have to be dealt with as they arise, so come back here if you get stuck...

  • Just upgraded to the new mac operating system and Illustrator CS5 crashes upon launching. All other applications open fine

    Any helpful ideas?

Did you migrate the CS5 files or do a complete reinstall of the software from the original media? Adobe products don't do well with migration.

  • Can't 'save for web' in photoshop cc on new mac (yosemite)

I have just upgrade to a new Mac running Yosemite and I can now longer save for web in Photoshop CC
I get an error "no file or directory can be found"
I have notice that in one of my Actions the directories are different on each computer:
on my new computer the directory is shown as:
    "in: /Users/myusername/Desktop/"
on my OLD computer (that works)  the directory is show as:
    "in: Macintosh HD:Users:myusername:Desktop:"
I'm wondering if this is related to my issue when saving
I have spent a lot of time searching and trying different solutions... none have worked

    Exit Photoshop CC.
Try deleting the SFW Prefs.  It's in this directory:
/Users/ ~username~ /Library/Preferences/Adobe/Plugins/Adobe Save for Web CC/Photoshop/Adobe Save for Web CC Prefs
