Upgraded to Mavericks yesterday. Cannot get iCloud or Mail, Contacts, etc. Pref Panes to open.

Very odd behavior by several of the Pref Panes in the System Preferences app. I cannot get the iCloud pref pane to launch. There is no spinning beach ball and the Force Quit Applications box doesn't show that System Preferences is not responding. Same goes for the Mail, Contacts & Calendars pref pane. This is really not cool at all (along with Safari not working any more).
Lucky for me, I upgraded to Mavericks on a clone of my primary hard drive, so all I've lost is the time it took to clone the primary drive and perform the Mavericks upgrade. I thought about holding off upgrading until the first major Mavericks update came out. I've not run into any major problems with any of my OS X installs or upgrades until Mavericks.
Oh, yeah, Finder is syrupy-slow under Mavericks as well. All the supposed memory use improvements in Mavericks have not resulted in a snappier system performance on my early-2011 MBP.

Problem solved: it took a long time for Mavericks to sync data to the newly upgraded drive from iCloud, apparently. I rebooted and let the laptop simmer overnight. When I got up the next morning, all the problems I mentioned were gone.
I have since done a Mavericks upgrade on another of my hard drives and let the system "settle" for a few hours after the upgrade. This seems to be the answer: if things that depend on iCloud aren't accessible right away, wait at least 30 minutes and then see how your system's behaving.
Hope this will help anyone with the same issue.

  • After upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion I cannot get icloud e-mails on Mail

After upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion I have not been able to receive e-mails from my icloud account. I can send email with both my acccounts (including icloud) and I can receive email with my alternative account. All my servers have been previously working with Lion. I guess this might have to do with the identification of my ingoing mail server that is currently set as “p-03-imap.mail.me.com”. Am I correct? and how can I change my ingoing mail specification to get Mail working? Please help me! Thank you!

I am having the same or a similar problem. When I open iCloud in system preferences and tick on Mail I get the message 'mail can't enabled at this time - Wait a moment and then try turning on Mail again'. I did this several times and it didn't work. I then completely turned off iCloud completely and restarted it, but I was still unable to access mail using iCloud (I was, however, able to access all of the other iCloud services). I then waited three days, to see if the issue would resolve its self, but it hasn't. Any suggestions as to how I can resolve this would be appreciated.

  • HT4623 iPhone 5 Upgraded to iOS7 but cannot get iTunes to work!

? iPhone 5 Upgraded to iOS7 but cannot get iTunes App to work!
The iTunes App opens but does not show anything! e.g. blank screen only. Tries to connect and sometimes gives message "Cannot connect to iTunes store". I can see top and bottom bar icons like Music, Films, TV, Search which each launch a new blank screen only. I can even get to Purchased option which still gives a blank screen. Have restored twice but result is the same.
    Advice welcome.

Discovered the fix to no iTunes due to another separate App problem that locked up after iOS7 upgrade. To fix, goto "Settings", "Safari", "Privacy and Security" and set the "Block Cookies" to "From third parties and advertisers". Exit Settings and restart the iPhone. Works for my blank screen iTunes issue.

  • Since I upgraded to Mavericks I cannot play .AVI files in Aperture

Hi, I have about 1 Tera of .AVI videos as referenced files to Aperture libraries that I have spent long time organizing, tagging, and keywording... Since I upgraded to Mavericks I cannot play these videos any longer. I can play them with VLC or DivX but not within Aperture. Is there any way to ask Aperture to use VLC to play the videos? Or to get Quicktime to play them within Aperture? I assume I am not the only one with this problem but haven't found any way to solve it.
Thanks a lot for any hint!

Hi, I have about 1 Tera of .AVI videos as referenced files to Aperture libraries that I have spent long time organizing, tagging, and keywording..
It is probably not a question of avi or mov. AVI is just a container for media with a variaty of codecs. It will depend on the codecs you installed, if Aperture will be able to show these.
What is your Aperture version? Have you upgraded to Aperture 3.5.1? My Aperture version has no problems to show my AVIs. I installed Perian 1.2.3 to have more codecs.

  • I have just upgraded to Maverick, I cannot open vectorworks 2011 now. please help..

I have just upgraded to Maverick, I cannot open vectorworks 2011 now. please help..

The way I resolved this issue was to create a dual boot Mac, so that I am able to boot from either Mountain Lion or Mavericks. Running Vectorworks in a virtual machine just didn’t cut it.
I had already upgraded to Mavericks, which meant that trying to install OS 10.8.5 as a second operating system produced the error message saying it cannot be installed on this computer.
First, if you need a copy of Mountain Lion installer and you has previously purchased it, open the App Store app, press the option key and then click on the purchases tab. You will see a list of all downloaded software from Apple and you can download OS 10.8.5 again without paying for it a second time. If you had previously created a boot disk of Mountain Lion, which I had not, you can obviously skip this step and the next.
You will need a boot disk for Mountain Lion. After downloading the Mountain Lion installer, the easiest way to create a boot disk is to use a slick little app called DiskMaker X, which you can get here: http://liondiskmaker.com  Next you will need a USB flash drive of at least 8GB in size. Install and run DiskMaker X, plug in your flash drive, and follow the prompts. In just a few clicks, your boot drive will be easily created.
Next, you will need to add a partition on your startup drive on which you will install Mountain Lion. Here is the procedure for creating the new partition: http://macs.about.com/od/applications/ss/diskutilitysize.htm  You can find this at Apple support, but this site gives you additional procedures that may be helpful. I set my new partition at 50 GB, but you can do with less is you don’t have the space.
With those two operations done, and your OS 10.8.5 boot drive plugged in, restart you Mac and press the option key after you hear the chime. You will be asked which drive you wish to start from- select the boot drive. After your Mac boots up, you will see several options- choose install Mountain Lion (actually I think the option is reinstall Mountain Lion).
After completing the OS install, install your copy of Vectorworks, copy and move whatever files you need to from Mavericks, and you are in business. To boot from either OS, simply press the option key and select OS 10.8.5 when you need to work in Vectorkorks, or OS 10.9 for all your other tasks. Switching back and forth isn’t as advantageous as otherwise, but it is the best way to run Vectorworks without upgrading for the $1,500 or so that would be required otherwise.

I have upgraded to Mavericks but cannot find my devices on Maps when I create directions.

    Dick,
You should be looking in the Mavericks forum, Maps is integrated into Mavericks so you will probably find some clues there. Also here is an article you may find useful:

  • I cannot get iCloud to sync my mac reading list (bookmarks).

I cannot get iCloud to sync my mac reading list (bookmarks) with my iPad and have tried several times unsuccessfully. Have had it connected to a power source AND have enabled the documents section on the iCloud backup. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to upgrade to Lion?

I have installed and signed in to sync on both PC and Android tablet. My history has been synced but bookmarks have not come across to the tablet, although the appropriate box is ticked on both.
I tried entering about:sync-progress on both machines. "Setup Complete" appears on the PC but on the tablet I am told that the address isn't valid.
The sync tab that opens up lists my "Firefox Account" with no option to manage or disconnect.
How can I get round this?

  • If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks wil I get iWork for free, If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks wil I get iWork for free

If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks will I get iWork for free.

If you buy a new Mac with Mountain Lion, any included software is free and can be redownloaded from AppStore for that machine only. Some software only gets reinstalled if OS X (only) gets installed over itself to fix issues. See #8 Step here.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you upgrade to Mavericks usually only OS X itself is changed (sometimes the hidden User Library is also), all the  software (and user accounts) also carries over (compatible or not), and Apple's software is upgraded.
So if your new Mountain Lion Mac comes with free iWork, then when you upgrade to Mavericks it will still be there.
If your new Mountain Lion does not come with free iWork, then it won't magically appear for free if you upgrade to Mavericks.
If you need a free Office suit, I suggest you look at the donationware LibreOffice.
You will likely need to control key or right click to "Open" LibreOffice to approve through OS X's "Gatekeeper".
You will need to manually update it also, as it's not on AppStore.
    https://www.libreoffice.org/
Benefit of LibreOffice is it's completely cross-platform compatible, so you can share working files with Windows and Linux users, which you can't with iWork.
You also should learn Microsoft Office when you have the funds, because it's standardized in the business world.

You need Silverlight. That is the application that plays the Netflix movies.
