Upgraded to Windows 8.1, CRXI RDC crashes VB6

Hello,
We have a number of Visual Basic 6 projects that utilize Crystal Reports XI.  We maintain these reports within Visual Basic 6 itself using the Report Designer Component (RDC).  This has always worked for us and allows us to continue with further enhancements and updates of these programs.
Upon upgrading to Windows 8.1 (32-bit), I've found that I can no longer maintain reports built with CRXI via the RDC within Visual Basic 6.  The VB6 IDE opens fine and displays all components within the Project Explorer as expected.  I can even open a CRXI report within the RDC in VB6 and it displays on-screen.  However, shortly after it opens I get a hard crash of the program, displaying the following error:
Visual Basic has stopped working.
Windows then attempts to find a solution to the problem and can't.
Some additional information:
1.  Everything was working fine when the system was running Windows 8.0.  It was only after the upgrade to Windows 8.1 that this issue started occurring.  Likewise, other workstations running Windows 8.0 (even those that are 64-bit) do not exhibit the problem described above.
2.  I have uninstalled and re-installed/re-registered/re-patched Crystal Reports XI on the problematic workstation and the issue still persists.
3.  To rule out permission / read-only access issues, I have disconnected the project from our internal source control system and made it stand-alone, giving myself "Full Control" to all associated files.  Problem still occurs.
4.  I have UAC disabled, local admin rights on the workstation, and have attempted to run Visual Basic 6 "as administrator" (i.e.; elevated mode) and the issue continues to persist.
Are there any known issues / incompatibilities with Crystal Reports XI and Windows 8.1?  Any ideas or suggestions to get things working again?  Any and all help will be appreciated.
Thanks!

Thanks for the information Ludek.  That's good to know.
After a bit more research, I was able to find a resolution and get things working as they did before Windows 8.1 was installed.
The VB6.EXE application crash produced an Application event in the Event Viewer.  The content of this message tipped me off to the problem.  In this case, it was of the "windows cannot access the file" variety.  Unfortunately, the actual file that is having the problem appears blank in the event.
From there, I did a little bit of homework regarding Visual Basic 6 and Windows 7/8 in general and found that most issues can be resolved by running the VB6.EXE in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode.  I then completed the following:
1.  Found the VB6.EXE in my file system.
2.  Right clicked, went to Properties, clicked the Compatibility tab.
3.  Located the section labeled Compatibility mode, clicked the checkbox to run in compatibility mode and selected Windows XP SP2 from the dropdown.
I then re-loaded the project and open the CRXI report in the RDC.  No app crash... problem solved :-)
As mentioned, unfortunately I don't know exactly what CRXI related file Windows 8.1 is having an issue with.  I originally thought it was something related to a mapped network drive, but all associated files seem to be pointing to the local C drive.  I know that Windows Security has certain issues with read/write access to the C drive as well, so it could be a more "local" issue after all.  Moving the project to a local drive other than C: might've resolved the issue as well.
In any case, this gets us back up and running under Windows 8.1.  Hope this helps somebody else running into a similar issue.  We have *many* programs that began life as VB6 projects quite a number of years ago.  We are migrating these over to VB.NET successfully and at a consistent pace... it just takes time to do it right.  This workaround effectively grants us some more time.

  • After upgrading to Windows 8.1 iTunes Crashes

    As long as I don't try to access iTunes store, I can open iTunes.  I've deleted every trace of iTunes, including the users/username/AppData/AppleComputer/Local and Roaming folders,and everything in MyMusic folder except for the music and re-downloaded and re-installed and it crashes.  Now it won't even come up to local iTunes without trying to access the iTunes Store and it crashes, so now it is completly unusable on my laptop.  It worked fine in Windows 8, so it is definately Windows 8.1 upgrade.  Any ideas how to fix or does Apple have to "fix" Microsoft's problem?

    I have tried every solution available and I am still having problems with i-tunes. This really ***** because I was actually starting to like some of the stuff they have available.
    As soon as I upgraded my windows 8 to 8.1, itunes started crashing when I went to access the store.
    As of late, I cant access anything because as soon as it opens, it asks me to verify my credit card info, and when it attempts to access the credit card form it crashes. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, copied and pasted and done all that is available, but i still have the same problem. I have a 64 bit machine and even tried using the 64 bit version of itunes.
    This is really starting to suck because before this, I had never used i tunes and after this, i probably never will again. Thank you windows for not only ruining my itunes experience, but for screwing up my google chrome experience as well. Pretty soon, I will be done with you all together.
    Unix is really sounding good about now

    I recently upgraded to windows 7. Indesign cs4 worked fine...until i tried to export my 16-page document to a pdf. I got the message: Adobe Indesign CS4 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correclty. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. (And it hasn't notified me, ha ha ha...) I tried with a one page document, and it was able to export it. Then i tried six pages of the doc and it won't export. ANy help out there?

    hi thanks peter spier
    I did a system restore, but that didn't help.
    I tried exporting the indesign file page by page, since it could do a single page. I discovered only page 5 was causing the problem.
    I will recreate page 5 from scratch and see how that goes. Something could be corrupt on it, but it had not presented a problem when I was using Windows XP and had exported the exact same entire 16 page file befor upgrading to windows 7 last month.

    I'm having the same problems. I did update the driverrs for the HD Graphics and it now powers off when I shut it down. It still will not come out of sleep mode though and I can not disable the touchpad when using a mouse. Everything was running fine until it updated to Windows 10.

  • For those upgraded to Windows 10 & VirtualBox is crashing (Some Tips)

    You may want to create this as a how-to.

    Hi, I just upgraded to Windows 10 and no surprise my Windows XP as a guests OS in VBox did not work and ended up with "Cannot load R0 module C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox/VBoxDD2R0.r0:" error. Long story short, whoever faces such issues should trying these steps :-1. Uninstall the old version if running 4.3.302. Install the latest version 5.0 from http://virtualbox.org3. In case if the guest OS profile is already loaded then its fine, otherwise load the guest OS once again.4. Before starting the guest OS, make sure you disable your third party antivirus and Windows Firewall to completely OFF 5. Voila, Vbox should work normally for your Guest OS and now you can resume the AV and Firewall. Also you can use VBox normally and does not need to keep disabling AV & Firewall all the time, it is just required for first time.

  • Premiere Pro CS3  (Version 3.0) will not start following upgrade to Windows 8-- rest of CS3 is fine

    Recently upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro;
    next time I tried to open Premiere Pro 3.0 (Adobe Master Collection CS3), splash screen scrolled normally through files being loaded until "SolidComposite.AEX", where it white-screened & crashed.
    Tried removing that file, it crashed on the next ".AEX" file; removed all ".AEX" files, it began crashing on ".dll" files;
    kept removing THEM, just for the heck of it, until the software loader couldn't even start.
    I popped in the CS3 disc to repair the installation-- on the entire suite, for good measure;
    re-booted & started Premiere-- crashed at the exact same point.
    Uninstalled and then re-installed Premiere-- the entire suite in fact, since there are so many common processes;
    couple of hours later, re-booted & started Premiere-- same exact thing at the same exact point.
    I found this same problem in at least a half-dozen threads, going back to '07--
    and several of them even mentioned the same exact file as the trigger for the crash!
    Unfortunately, not one of those threads has ever ended with an accurate diagnosis of the problem,
    nor a solution more insightful than reinstalling both the CS & the OS.
    I don't want to abandon Windows 8...
    but on the other hand, I just can't afford to pony up another grand to upgrade the CS Suite again, either...
    Besides: CS3 is everything I need, and it has worked wo well for so long--
    even now, Premiere Pro is the only software in the suite with a problem!!
    (I used Photoshop to create the above screencap)
    So I'm hoping against hope that one of you techno-gurus may have come across this ITRW--
    and actually SOLVED IT!!

    Thanks for your prompt reply, John-- and for NOT simply advising me to spend my kid's tuition on more of your company's products...
    Actually, I had tried the "Run as Administrator" option already, having found it in one of those other threads;
    there was no change in the sequence described above.
    I decided to try another possible solution which I read about in one of those other threads: opening Premiere from a different account.
    Incredibly, it WORKED-- sort of...
    I got a couple of popups advising me that missing codecs had to be installed-- and upon completion, Premiere opened!
    Here's an interesting note: the last file to load was still "SolidComposite.AEX"-- and the "White Screen" I kept seeing was Premiere opening normally.  The next thing that displayed was the normal  dialog box "Open/New Project"-- I entered a new project name, and Premiere started normally. I even added a few video files as a test... all opened normally.
    I returned to the Admin account to see if the fix was in here, too;
    but clearly the war wasn't over, over here...
    It now appears that some personal setting in the Admin account is causing Premiere to close itself;
    I've been reading about the layered security measures embedded into Windows 8-- I'm suspecting the conflict lies there...
    I ran the Windows Troubleshooter & got this:
    both MS & Adobe confirm that CS3 is fully compatible--here's my sytem info:
    Since I seem to have established a fall-back position that lets me use Premiere, my crisis becomes a mere conundrum;
    but I know this is gonna gnaw at me anyway, & I'm hoping that this new information might suggest further troubleshooting options to someone who understands the Adobe software and/or the Windows software better than I do!
    Speaking as someone who has found many solutions on forums like this over the years, I assure you:

    Win 7 Home Premium x64 computer paired with an HP Officejet Pro 8000. Initial install of printer required I uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 4 and reinstall after the printer was installed to resolve Windows error messages. Win 7 is a clean install from Win Vista.
    Smart Web Printing 4.5.1 (from the HP CD) works well, albeit a bit slow.  The upgrade to 4.6 was unsucessful and crashed the IE8 x86 window.  I uninstalled it and retured to version 4.5.1 and it again works well.  Smart Web Printing apparently is not intended for use with the IE8 x64bit version and I have never seen it in the toolbar as an option.

    I guess I posted too soon. I went to go to the control panel and a window popped up that needed attention. I guess the install of SWP was not finished and after clicking to continue and rebooting (again) SWP looks like it is working again.

  • After upgrading to Windows 8.1 I can't access the iTunes Store

    After purchasing a new HP computer I was prompted to upgrade to Windows 8.1 and my troubles began.  I tried to sync my iPad with 2,566 songs loaded and iTunes 11.1.3 only recognized 590 songs.  Every time I try to access the iTunes Store it fails to load and iTunes crashes.  Anybody know what's up?

    I think the bigger issue here might be trying to run win8.1 on a system that never had that OS qualified.  I suspect there's a high probability there are some BIOS issues being encountered since the last BIOS for E30 was released well before win8.1 ever came out.
    Since you state win7 doesn't seem to have any issues, I doubt there's a HW issue going on.  The next likely culprit would probably be BIOS.  Unfortunately there's not much chance of getting win8.1 BIOS issues addressed at this point since that product has been EOL for quite some time.

  • USB device keeps disconnecting/connecting after upgrading to Windows 8.1

    I have a device(Pedal for Sim Racing) connected via USB, everything is working fine in Windows 7 and 8 but after upgrading my machine to Windows 8.1 the device keeps disconnecting and connecting for like every 2 seconds. But after I open the Property Sheet
    in Game Controllers panel the disconnection issue was gone, if I reconnect the device the issue persist. Other people who have similar device also encounters the same issue after upgrading to windows 8.1. The issue persist with or without the device driver
    installed.
    Any idea, what might cause this?
    Best regards
    mark

    I'v got this exact same problem with my Win 7 desktop.  I've also got pedals and wheel but don't see it as different than all the other USB devices.  I'm using a bunch of USB, but no hubs, including 3 external storage hard drives. But the momentary
    disconnect appears in all devices as best as i can see..even my long time trouble free head phones..keyboard..and all.  Sometimes the sound goes away and if I unplug and replug them the sound comes back, and other times I have to exit and re enter the
    game. I also get video crashes ..maybe not related.IDK..and have to restart all, because I've got three black screens in Eyefinity. For years my system was trouble free and its just slowly started getting worse. I've thought it had to do with system "sleep"
    etc but long ago went to never sleep max performance etc..Makes no difference. Keep thinking its my hardware or my house wiring etc..But can't seem to solve it. I replaced my Mobo/chip/ram maybe 6 months ago and that appears to have not helped.  It seems
    to be getting worse. I hate to start replacing parts piece by piece..cost a lot of money and sometimes doesn't help.
    When I'm playing a game I can often hear "faint" sound of USB connect disconnect happening with regularity..that little bing/boink sound etc..So it must just be constantly happening...Seems weird. Didn't have anything like this happening years
    ago with pretty much the same hardware and same Win7 with the continuing updates etc.
    What can be causing this common problem?

  • ITunes no longer finds music on another PC upgraded to Windows 8

    We store all of our music on a central home theater PC, and the itunes library running on a Vista laptop refers to all of these files.
    Windows on the laptop has no issues still accessing the music files on the PC after upgrading to Windows 8 but now iTunes can't locate any of the files.
    iTunes says it can't locate them, but if you look at the location in the info pane is says something like file://localhost//HTPC/Family/Music etc. which seems perfectly reasonable to me.

    That wasn't it. The problem was that the network share on Vista was lost when I upgraded to Windows 8. I finally figured this out after much frustration only to find that letting another PC share all a user's files makes ALL the Windows 8 Metro apps crash!
    The way I fixed it was to use "net share Family=c:\users\family"
    There didn't seem to be any way to do this through the Windows 8 GUI
    Then I had to allow sharing for "everyone" on all the Family files
    Now iTunes finds all the files where it used to

    Hi there,
    Specs: as per Qosmio X 300. SSD 110GB, pentium core 4 extreme, 4 Gb RAM, plenty free storage on SSD (29GB), NVidia drivers with primary being GE Force 9800 M GTS, Direct X10.  there is also a note down the bottom saying that if i have linked graphic cards (whihc i do i believe there are three), that i can expect better perfomrance with some software.
    Ok I aplogise from the outset, i am a layman and not that techie. K.  So the issue that I upgraded recently (last week) from vista ultimate 64 bit to windows 7 64 bit. ultimate.  For the main, I am reasonably happy with the outcome in most areas - except gaming that is. I have increased speed and agility and the processor is now rated at 7.2. WEI. overall the laptop is rated at 5.8. however, getting back to teh reason for writing, I have nothing negative to say about windows 7 (as compared to its predecessor) apart from wishing to resolve my game crash issue. which usually occurs about 15 mins - 20 mins into a game and comes in the form of a shutdown ? BSOD from whence the laptop reboots when prompted at on/off and wants to know if to start normally or in various safe modes. I have noticed that the laptop does become very hot at the back (around the fans) prior to teh shutdown, and i am wondering if this is an overheating issue, and how to resolve if this is the case. the only other thing i have noticed that seems untoward is that i have apparently lost a wireless jump start driver from the upgrading process which i cannot find anywherre, and may be totally unrelated to this issue anyway.
    All i want to do is play the games i could play on windows vista ultimate 64 bit. these include: Sims 3, sims 3 world adventures, sims 3 ambitions, highloft end stuff, and Bioshock. Oddly enough, i have played sid meyers civillisations revolutions IV (the latest one) with no crashes, and i havent tried ANNO 1404, but fear a similar fate may await this game as some of the others.
    Addditional information:
    everything is as i described it above, however the screen does not go blue but black,and the laptop shuts itself down,  laptop acts as if hibernating mode? (these are guesses) or some mechanism geared at preventing over heating - the back becomes very hot.  the machine can be rebooted from normal mode but comes up firstly with a screen suggesting that the laptop was incorrectly shutdown, and offers options as to safe mode, normal etc. i have been starting normally with no adverse effects.   This is scenario one.
    scenario two ends up similarly at teh reboot stage, but gets there differently. i play the game and the screen freezes, unable to move touchpad curser, unalbe to use ctrl alt del to get up task manager. end up having to crash to reboot.
    I am quite frustrated and very reluctant to mess around with things that i dont understand (dont want to make the problem worse!). I am happy to attemtpt to follow your good explicit advice.
    the only other negative thing i am expereinceing is screen flicker on internet. I have changed my power mode from high performance to balanced to try to nullify the overheating issue but i now am noticing this screen flicker which is irriating and appears on keystroke, or cursor movement.
    Please note well:  I am a layman, not a technician! Please explain in easy to (dummy) terms! Thanks!
    kind regards

  • Windows 8.1 - All services crashing repeatedly!

    Hi,
       I recently bought a HP laptop. It came with a HDD. But I added an mSATA SSD and cloned it to my SSD. Everything went fine. But recently I upgraded to Windows 8.1. Then my PC started behaving weirdly! After the update, the system wouldn't boot
    to shell (explorer). After restarting several times and I spawned explorer.exe from taskmanager. Even that I didn't help. Then after observing the taskmanager for a while, I noticed an exe which was consuming some CPU. I killed that exe and my PC started the
    shell properly. Then after a restart, I am not able to update anything. Even though there are 12 updates, I am not able to select and install them. Windows Update merely shows as though it's updating and then nothing happens and ends with a 800706BA Code error.
    Then I checked event viewer, I found out that there are many services (All system services) crashing frequently and then they are being restarted by service control manager. I am planning to downgrade to windows 7 if there is nothing that I could do!
    Thanks in advance,
    Shri Ganesh
