Upgraded to wrong kernel

OK I know it was stupid, but now I need suggestions on the best way to get out of it.
I managed to copy a 64-bit kernel pacman.conf onto my 32-bit machine, which now refuses to boot. Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to remedy this without doing a complete reinstall? I suppose a CD or USB is the place to start.

OK so I tried this:
pacman --dbpath /mnt/arch/var/lib/pacman --root /mnt/arch -v --cachedir /mnt/arch/var/cache/pacman/pkg \
--config /mnt/arch/etc/pacman.conf -Syy <list of packages>
But I get an error for every package in the local directory:
error: could not open file /mnt/arch/var/lib/pacman/local/<pkg-name>/depends: No such file or directory
There's one for 'depends' and 'files' for every package in the directory. I tried it with a single package and it reports an error every package there too, but then it downloads the package (giving me hope...) but then gives me the same error but just for the package I'm trying to install, reports that it is installing the package, and then
error: command failed to execute correctly
Suggestions are quite welcome; I may need to reinstall

  • Will Oracle 10.1.0.2 be ok after upgrading linux e3 kernel to 2.4.21-53.EL

    Hi, all
I have an oracle 10g(10.1.0.2) database running on a linux server (RedHat Linux e3). The linux kernel is 2.4.21-20.ELsmp.
Because we need to upgrade the ASM to make the backup stuff run well, we have to upgrade the linux kernel. The latest linux e3 kernel is 2.4.21-53.ELsmp, but the latest ASMlib 2.0 driver is for 2.4.21-52.ELsmp.
Could I upgrade the ASM under the -53 kernel? Or we have to install the -52 kernel?
    Thanks a lot!

Whether you can is far less important than whether you should.

  • Web AS 620 - upgrade to  640 kernel & J2EE 640 - CRM 4.0

    Hi
We are running CRM 4.0 (SP6) with 620 kernel (1902) and  J2EE 6.20. This is running on Web AS 6.20. We implemented I.C Web Client and Mobile Sales functionaility with CRM.
We are planning to upgrade to 640 Kernel (ABAP). Any prerequisites or known problems with direct upgrade to 640 kernel in Web AS 6.20  and also any dependencies with J2EE engine since we are using IC Web Client?
Or do we also have to uprade to J2EE 640 Engine?
Your inputs on this would be highly appreciated.
    Regards
    Chandu

    Hi Chandu,
in our schenario when we want to use CRM SAF we raise the message to SAP they told me that both kernel is to be same.
but in one of the CRM server we upgrade the kernel of CRM server from 6.20 to 6.40 and J2EE server is 6.20 our application is run without any error.
if u want to upgrde ur Kernel, upgrade it, but make sure to backup the old kernel,
than after test the application. i'm sure it's works, in some case error than revert back.
if ur problem is solved close this forum

  • Wrong kernel loaded?

    Hello
I am currently in the process of installing arch and i had a networking problem i had no interfaces so i came across some thread which said that if that happens u might be loading the wrong kernel
    so i ran
    uname -a
    : Linux 3.17.3
    and also pacman -Qi linux
    :linux 3.17.4
and then i looked more on that issue and i came across this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=181536
in which someone said you might not be mounted to boot so i tried mount /dev/sda2(this is the boot partition) /boot and i got in return error
    unknown filesystem type 'vfat'
the thing is that i made it fat according to this tutorial http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1860 … -uefi.html of installing arch on a uefi motherboard and also according to this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … _Partition
i just wanna state that during the installation process i dont remember any problems mounting the partition
what do i do to fix this problems?
    thanks a lot

  • Ipw2200 module grabs onto the wrong kernel

    Perhaps this shows it best:
    /lib/modules $ sudo pacman -S ipw2200
:: ipw2200-1.0.8-4: is up to date.  Upgrade anyway? [Y/n]

    Total Package Size:   0.3 MB
    Proceed with upgrade? [Y/n]
    checking package integrity... done.
    loading package data... done.
    checking for file conflicts... done.
    upgrading ipw2200... done.
==> In order to use the firmware you have to agree to Intel's license located
    ==> here: /lib/firmware/LICENSE-ipw2200
==> If you don't agree, you must remove this package.
    /lib/modules $ find -name ipw2200.ko
    ./2.6.15-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2200.ko
    /lib/modules $ uname -r
    2.6.14-archck
Is this a bug in the installer for ipw2200, the archck kernel, or am I doing something wrong?
(I put this in the laptop section because I'm trying to get my laptop's wireless working.)

This becomes a bit more of a problem now that the ipw2200 driver is in kernel.  IIRC 2.6.14-archck was build with out ipw2200 support.  Which was good since the 2.6.14 series contained a rather old version of ipw2200.  The arch devs went the other way and decided to build the stock kernel with ipw2200 support.  Since this kernel contained the modules the ipw2200 package in extra was changed to only contain the firmware.  If you do a pacman -Ql ipw2200 to show what files are part of that package you'll only see enteries in /lib/firmware.  Running a  pacman -Qo /lib/modules/2.6.15-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2200.ko will return /lib/modules/2.6.15-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2200.ko is owned by kernel26 2.6.15-2.  In this case building ipw2200 package against your kernel won't do much good since the package doesn't contain the modules you need any more.  Though tomk is right in general, when you run a custom kernel any packages that contain kernel modules have to be built against your kernel.  Its one of the pains of running a custom kernel, but fortunataly abs makes it easy.  Anyway on to a solution for your problem.  Because the ipw2200 module in 2.6.14 was incompatable with wpa_supplicant I posted copies of the old ipw2200 pkgbuild and install files into the wpa_supplicant section of the wiki.  There are some instructions there that should get you going for the time being.  2.6.15-archck is out and a package in comunity shouldn't be too far off.  It will most likely have support for ipw2200 built in as the stock kernel does when the package is released.

  • Upgrade leads to kernel panic

Hey I was doing a system upgrade that failed with a hang and an error about not being able to execute /sbin/mingetty which I don't remember exactly. When I rebooted I got
EXT4-fs (sda3): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
Not activating Mandatory Access Control now since /sbin/tomoyo-init doesn't exist.
switch_root: can't execute '/sbin/init': No such file or directory
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
    Pid: 1, comm: switch_root Not tainted 2.6.36-ARCH #1

I booted up with a rescue CD and pacman.log ends with Running 'pacman -Syu'; synchronizing package lists; starting full system upgrade; upgraded linux-api-headers (2.6.36.2-1 -> 2.6.37-1)
That's it. When I try to chroot back into my regular setup according to the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chroot, chroot complains that /bin/bash doesn't exist.
Any ideas on where to go next to try and fix my borked upgrade?
    Patrick

Well I can't get the system to boot but I took your advice and chroot'd in and ran pacman -Su. It finished and seemed to be happy. When I try and reboot now I get a kernel panic "No init found". I checked grub's menu.lst and found that the uuid was now wrong. I ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26 and put the correct uuids in grub/menu.lst. That didn't change anything so I added a init=/sbin/init to the kernel line in grub/menu.lst but now it just complains that it can't execute init or /sbin/init. Anyone have a clue of what to try next?

  • Hard Drive and RAM upgrade gone wrong - please help!

I have a 2+ year old Mac Mini Core Solo that I recently decided to upgrade. Originally it had a 80GB hard drive and 512MB of RAM and I installed a 250GB Western Digital drive and upgraded to 2GB of RAM.
Everything went smooth with the reinstall of OSX and the Mini was actually working, Internet was working etc. I was in the process of downloading and installing all of the Mac SW updates and that went on for several minutes, it actually got through most of them and then a screen came up to tell me to restart the computer. I did and then got the same screen. Which was the gray screen with the restart message and a message like this:
panic (cpu 0 caller 0x00398C43); unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"
(Then there was a bunch of hexidecimal debugging jibberish and then some kernel version info.)
So I held down on the option key while doing the restart and tried to start from the internal disc and also start from the install disc. I can get to where I've reinstalled the first disc again, but then when I have to restart the computer to load the second disc I get the gray restart screen again with the above info.
During one of the attempts I brought up utilities and did a scan of the internal HD for defects and all the repair steps but it always said that everything was fine. When I bring up the general computer info it shows that I have 2GB of RAM. So it recognizes the two items that I installed.
So what do I do now? I am stuck on this issue and out of ideas, I havent tried to put back in the old hardware to test it, (but I would prefer not to as that doesnt really help me with the new stuff I bought).
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to offer as much detail as possible in case there is something in there that triggers an idea with someone. I dont live in a huge city so theres no apple store within several hours drive from here.
Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!
    crazychile

    Thanks for all the help.
It is a kernel panic and unfortunately it can be caused by a bunch of things. But I think I have it figured out for now.
My first step was to put the old RAM back in with the new HD, no change with the problem.
Then I put the old HD back in with the old RAM (original config) and everything was back to normal.
Then I tried the new RAM with the old HD and everything is also good. (and faster!)
So it would appear that the new HD was flakey and needs to go back to OWC.
Hey, I'm a pro at taking apart and rebuilding a Mini now!
    Thanks again for the help,

  • OSX Mountain Lion Upgrade causes Restart, Kernel Panics

Have tried resetting PRAM, repairing permissions, and Disk Repair. This is happening after an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. A fresh install is not a possibility. of course, I have a time machine backup and can go back to snow leopard if I have to. I cannot do a clean Mountain Lion install although I am planning to do one just to see if this is a hardware issue and not a software issue, and then revert back with time machine. I'm not having any luck discerning what caused the actual reboot.
There is no particular action I take that causes this. It happens randomly. It has been happening since the upgrade today. I installed XCode4 on the computer from the app store, which did not upgrade but instead put another copy of Xcode. There was a thread I researched where someone suggests removing an AppleProfileFamily file from Sytem/Library, but I do not have that file on my system.

This software seems to pinpoint the problem. I haven't had the restart issue with Intel onboard graphics only. However, this definitely isn't a problem solved.
After much more research, I found that people with my video card have been having this issue since OSX Lion and Apple still hasn't fixed it. This is incredibly disappointing. I will be contacting Apple for a refund on Mountain Lion soon if I can't find updated drivers.
Thanks very much for your help.

  • Out-of-place upgrade going wrong

Trying to work through an upgrade from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3 on a dev box, prefereably without major downtime, 64-bit Linux. Since I cannot shutdown existing listeners or database, the approach is perhaps a bit non-standard
    <li>I've got the 11.2.0.3 software unzipped</li>
    <li>I've created directories for a new ORACLE_BASE</li>
    <li>I've exported ORACLE_BASE=/new/directory/structure</li>
<li>I've then launched database/runInstaller from the unzipped location and performed a painless software-only installation</li>
I'm now slightly confused about the next bit, bearing in mind I'm trying to do this without any downtime on the existing 11.2.0.1 database.
What I'd like to do is to get a copy of the existing database opened and running from the 11.2.0.3 home, whilst the existing 11.2.0.1 db continues on as it is.
    <li>So I've set a new ORACLE_SID</li>
<li>I've copied across the orapw and init.ora from the old O_H to the new, renaming them appropriately</li>
<li>I've edited the init.ora so that path-specific parameters all now take the new O_H directory structure</li>
<li>I've then put the entire existing database into hot backup mode and copied it to the new O_H structure</li>
Because so little is being done on the original database I appear to have got away with copying online redo logs, because I was able to startup mount; issue lots of 'alter database rename file...' commands so the new file locations are picked up; recover database; alter database open upgrade.
What I am now struggling with is how to actually upgrade the freshly-opened new database. If I run dbua, it says 'database isn't mounted', whether the new db copy is in mount or open upgrade mode. If I run @catupgrd.sql, it seems to complete without a problem, leaving STATUS of V$INSTANCE at OPEN MIGRATE. But when I run the @utlu112s.sql command, I get this:

Any suggestions of where I am going wrong, please?
(I am following http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e23633/upgrade.htm#i1011372 and have checked Upgrade from 10203 to 10204 among others)

I think that (partially, as it turns out) de-installing unlicensed components on the original database may have caused this problem.
I tried doing a data pump export of the original database, and it failed with an error I tracked down in Metalink (I'm sorry, I didn't record the specifics). Turned out there were four tables left behind from OWB and a broken package related to Spatial. I dropped those, and the export worked.
But instead of using that export, I tried my hot copy technique again.. and this time it worked.
So I guess the moral of the story is to ensure your source database is 100% functional before you try messing around with any of this stuff.

Have remembered one of the specifics: Metalink 1328829.1 (OLAP removal leaves behind DBMS_CUBE_EXP in an invalid state). There was one other similar issue, but I still don't remember the details on that.

    you get the idea.
Now upon inspection of my system I found that my /lib/modules/3.3.8-1-ARCH/kernel/ looks like this:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Jun 5 09:30 extramodules -> ../extramodules-3.3-ARCH
    drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Jun 5 09:29 kernel
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 703194 Jun 5 09:29 modules.alias

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 355147 Jun 5 09:29 modules.symbols.bin
so it makes sense that the directory and files are not found. The question is where is the problem?
Was my Arch web install bad or is there a problem with today's kernel upgrade?

    Terminator & Gcool,
Thank you both for your help.
I ended up following the link Terminator posted in his reply and I was able to solve the problem.
Unlike pineapple-biku (in the aforementioned thread) I did not chroot my machine I just:
    pacman -S udev
    pacman -S mkinitcpio
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -S linux
    and that solved the problem.
It's odd, however, the number of people having similar problems upgrading the kernel ... seems like there is a bug somewhere that seems to
affect people that "meet certain criteria".
    Thanks gain guys!!

Note that all the missing modules are '.ko', rather than the gzipped '.ko.gz' that you should expect with the arch kernel. This indicates that depmod failed when you installed the kernel.

  • 32 bit Kernel Panic upon upgrade, 64 bit Kernel boots fine.

    Greetings,
I just did a regular update from 10.5 to 10.6, and upon completion of the upgrade I can't boot into the 32 bit Kernel without a Kernel Panic. I can freely boot into the 64 bit kernel, and it works fine. Anyone else experience this? I could do a full re-install, but before I go through all that shenanignas I would just like to see if anyone might have some advice for me.
    Thanks!
    David

Have you tried both ways: booting normally and booting holding down 3-2?

  • [SOLVED]Problematic upgrade to newest kernel 3.10.5-1

Aloha, guys. I've just had a miserably failed upgrade to the latest kernel, probably due to something I had misconfigured and hadn't noticed before.
I was running 3.10 already perfectly before this last update to 3.10.5-1 (x86_64), but as soon as I rebooted after upgrading to the brand spanking new kernel, I got the fsck warning other people mentioned around this forum - corrected already in my syslinux.cfg by replacing ro with rw in the append line.
Both with ro and rw in the append line the boot process hangs (afterall, that fsck warning wouldn't stop the laptop from booting). The problem I'm having is that udev is not starting, meaning that boot hangs with lots of failed udev warnings.
The first one that comes up is "Failed to start udev Coldplug all Devices", and "Failed to start udev Kernel Device Manager" from then on until the boot process just hangs.
I've chrooted and tried rebuilding the initramfs, but it's giving me an "invalid kernel specified: 'boot/vmlinuz-linux'" error.
Right now I'm totally at a loss, as I cannot even begin to troubleshoot it any further. I hadn't kept the older kernel pkg in order to downgrade, but would like to try correcting this before eventually downgrading - as that just temporarily solves my problem.
My mkinitcpio hooks were "base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck" and I've never had any previous problems with my initramfs. I know I may be missing something basic, or some further information needed to troubleshoot it, so please, please, please, just let me know and I will provide it here.
Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

This must be something specific about your system - I have three machines running without any problem with kernel 3.10.5-1 - one uses the latest grub 2.00.5086-1, and the other two boot with rEFInd. All three boot fine and are stable.
Did you have any customisation in your mikinitcpio.conf or kernel parameters during boot?
In case it is of interest here is the output in my pacman log for the kernel update section:

  • Since upgrade of my kernel and xorg...

    Hi,
Since I've upgraded the kernel and Xorg, my computer is slower, and my alsa is'nt working anymore, except when I redo the alsaconf, but I'm obligated to do it every time I start my computer, and my mouse is'nt scrolling anymore except when I type:
    /usr/bin/xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 8 9 4 5 6 7 10 11"
And again every time I boot...
I'm tired to redo all this stuff before using my computer, could someone help me?
    Thanks!

you can put that "pointer ..." part into "~/.Xmodmap" and add alsa as daemon to your /etc/rc.conf, that may solve some problems, or at least the "redoing" thing.
A better way is described in the wiki where also the alsa thingy should be explained somewhere
