Upgrading from version 7 to 8?

I currently have iTunes 7.7 installed.
I don't use it much - just to copy my CDs to G4 HD and then transfer the music to my iPod Classic. That job is now complete and I don't anticipate having to add much in the future.
Should I update to 8.0.2 - which update I have previously downloaded from Apple and saved in my download folder? OR go directly to 8.1? OR not bother with either?
Will there come a time when I will not be able to upgrade to a newer version because I've left the old version un-updated?
Thanks,
Mrs H

I get it, but do you mean the determining factor is the hardware or the OS? Sorry to be so stupid about this, my confusion lies in the fact that I got my G4 Dual 450 literally the day that OS X was introduced, but I got it with OS 9 installed and stayed with that til 2007 - I'm a bit slow to move into the 21st century! So, is my G4 originally supposed to be an OS 9 or OS X machine - who knows?
You are looking at the interplay of multiple factors. There is no single right answer, though there may be an answer for any one given configuration. If you run software designed to run comfortably on a 2GHz machine, the general rule is your 0.45Ghz machine is going to breathe pretty hard running it. However, just today I saw an Apple employee post on the itunes forums that somebody should run the newer version of itunes (8.1 vs. 8.0) because certain features had been introduced to make it run faster. I'm just guessing here, but would 8.1 run faster on your computer than 8.0? Possibly, because of the modifications. Would 8.1 run faster than 6? Unlikely, because 8.1 (and 8.0) probably has a larger number of features over 6 (this may be more applicable in some other programs than iTunes)
Your G4 was intended to run OSX but included OS9 because at that time there were few people running OSX and many running OS9 and you needed the compatibility during the transition. At one stage they had OSX on computers but no software actually ran under OSX!
Your computer wasn't designed for Tiger but it can run it, although Tiger was really introduced with late model G5s and early generation Intel Macs. Fortunately Tiger is pretty friendly on old model G4s but they all had to undergo some hardware upgrades in order to meet the minimum specifications.
Get the release information for the software. What was the current OS when it was released? Most versions say what OS is required and/or compatible.
I am running Tiger - but by current OS do you mean Tiger vs Leopard, or all the interim updates to Tiger? And the question about what my G4 is supposed to be still remains...
Well, I have Tiger which is ca. year 2005. I have Word 2004 which runs well under Tiger. I have itunes 7.5 which came out in 2007 when Tiger was the "current" OS version. Lots of my other software was written back when Tiger was the "current" version. That's what I mean by the "current" at the time. I can run a lot of software designed during the Leopard era but some of it (e.g. Leopard itself) cannot run on my computer either due to hardware or operating system restrictions.
So, it can be the hardware or the OS. Newer software is optimized for newer hardware. You can get it to run on old hardware but that old hardware is having to work harder, and sometimes simply won't be adequate. There's people who like nothing more than to get Tiger to run on the oldest computer possible just to meet a challenge, but that doesn't mean they can actually do anything with it other than take a photo of their screen saying they have such-and-such a model running Tiger.
Think of our computers as senior citizens. Yes, you can put a granny in an apartment three stories up, but it will take her a while to climb those stairs each day, and some grannies might not even be able to do that. My approach is to be nice to my granny computer and not make those requirements. Even if granny can make it, you might not have the patience if visiting granny and have to wait for her all the time. However, it is possible that moving to an apartment three stories up might be better if when designing the building the builders also put in an elevator. So you have to take it on a case-by-case basis although you can make some general assumptions.
I also suppose that if I go up to a newer iTunes on the MBP I'll need to on the G4 if I want to transfer a piece of music from one to the other.
If just transferring music files you won't need to update the G4. It's only if you wish to share the libraries (vs. the music files themselves) that you would have to have the same version.

  • How do you fix 'unable to upgrade from version 0'?

I have been working on 6 ibooks over the past year, documenting a lot of stuff for user manuals for our school. The ibooks were all created in iBA version 1.0, but are not published - we only use them internally so we just use the previews.
I gave up trying to upgrade my 1.0 iBooks, it takes too long to 'optimize' the files when I try to open them in 2.0. I have read all the issues with iBA 2.0, but decided to download 2.0 on another computer and wabt to try to re-write all my old 1.0 manuals (I have all the files that went into them).
However, when I double-click to open the 2.0, nothing happens. So I go to 'File' and select 'New from Template Chooser'. I then get the window with all the new templates, including the portrait ones. When I select any template, say the 5th one for example, I get the prompt "The document 'Textbook 05.ibatemplate' could not be upgraded. Unable to upgrade from version 0". This happens for every template. I don't understand. I downloaded the 2.0 from the app store onto a 'clean' computer. Yes, it has Lion on it and all the spec requirements to run iBA. Can anyone help me with what to do next?

  • Issues during technical upgrade from  version 4.6C to ECC 6.0

    Dear All,
We have done a technical upgrade from version 4.6C to ECC 6.0 and encountered following issues -
In the t-code ABZE (acquisition with in house production) there is a check-box for reversal posting on screen with version 4.6C. However, this field is missing in ECC 6.0. Why so?
In the report s_alr_87012327, there is a field "only with creation block" in version 4.6C. However, this field is missing in ECC 6.0. Why so?
Request to kindly suggest the alternative to carry out the same in ECC 6.0.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Dhawal

    Hi Akshya,
    Please find answers below.
    1) 4.6c is NON-UNICODE system, Can I upgrade it into ECC 6.0 UNICODE system?
    Yes you can.
If you are on a single code page system then you can give a gap between your uprade and unicode conversion. There is no problem with the singlecode upgrade and conversion.
But if your system is MDMP then you will have to do the CUUC method that is both upgrade and unicode conversion together. Though you can give a gap and sign an disclaimer with SAP it is still not recomended way.
    2) 4.6c does not have any ITS system installed. If we upgrade it to ECC6.0 ABAP only, then Can I activate WAS internal ITS?
    Yes you can activate it.
    3) 4.6c does not have any JAVA stack. When I upgrade it to ECC 6.0, can I upgrade it to dual stack (ABAP+JAVA)? If yes, then how?
After the upgrade and unicode conversion you can install the java stack.
    Regards,
    Ravi.

  • Can I upgrade from version 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 in order to access mobileme?

Can I upgrade from version Tiger 10.4.11 to  Leopard 10.5.8 in order to access mobileme?, If so, how would I accomplish this action? I have already created a web site using iweb which came with my I-Mac (3 or 4 years old), and noe need to publish it on mobileme.

If you machine meets the minimum for Snow Leopard (10.6.x) then it would be easier to buy that. If the machine is capable I'd recommend upgrading to Snow Leopard. It's going to be difficult  and more expensive to get Leopard. Here are the minimum spec's for Snow Leopard:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMeservice; fees and terms apply.

Message title was edited by: Brett N

There is never an upgrade "patch" to change an old version to a new version.  Each version of PSE is an independent, full program installation.
    Your options are:
Find the best price you can for a "full" version of PSE10 and purchase and install that.
Wait a while until the new PSE11 is released and purchase and install that.

Yes - it will upgrade from versions 1, 2 or 3.

You may not even need the old FCE to be installed as I have been told that all you need is its serial number.

  • Do i have to upgrade from version 10.6.8 to use icloud on my mac book air?

do i have to upgrade from version 10.6.8 to use icloud on my mac book air?

I'm afraid so. The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

I'd suggest reading this guide to make sure you have prepared your environment to support 10.x first. The link below also contains the upgrade path to 10.0(1).
One of the ways you can do this is:
1/ Apply refresh upgrade cop file on all servers in cluster.
2/ Upgrade the cluster to 8.6(2). Take a backup of the cluster.
3/ Build a cluster of 8.6(2) servers on VMs, and assign them the same hostnames and IP address as the hardware cluster. (You may need to keep these on a separate network until switching off the hardware machines)
4/ Restore the backup taken from the hardware cluster on to the VM cluster.
5/ Upgrade VM cluster to 10.0(1).
