Upgrading protection mode
I've never used any Data Guard protection mode except Maximum Performance before so please forgive me if my questions seem ignorant.
I have a primary DB with 2 standbys both currently operating in maximum performance mode. The primary is a 2 node RAC cluster. Both standbys are single instance. None of the databases in the configuration use standby logs (yet). I am currently using ARCH to ship the logs to both standbys. All databases are running version 11.2. I am not using Data Guard broker.
I am considering upgrading just standby # 2 to maximum availability protection mode, but I'm not sure if it's really what I want or not. Perhaps someone here with a better understanding can confirm for me whether its the best choice.
My goal is to achieve the maximum data protection possible with no performance impact whatsoever on the primary database.
If I understand maximum availability correctly (and I am not certain I do), a commit issued on the primary will not complete until the maximum availability standby has acknowledged receipt of the redo data. If the link between the two goes down, that could introduce a significant delay in the commit. Is that correct? In my situation any performance impact on the primary DB is unacceptable.
Perhaps what I want is maximum performance using standby logs, with the LGWR and ASYNC attributes enabled on the corresponding log_archive_dest_n parameter. If I understand that correctly, a commit on the primary will complete as soon as the redo is written to the local redo log and the availability of the standby destination will have no performance impact at all. In general the standby will remain only a few seconds behind the primary. If the link between the two goes down, I can alert myself to the situation with a simple query of v$dataguard_stats and correct whatever the underlying problem is.
Can someone please confirm for me whether I am understanding the behavior of commits under these two different protection modes and transport modes?
Also, if I do create standby logs for the one destination, do I also need to create them on the primary and other standby as well.
Thanks.
Here's what I can think of :
Max protection mode will shutdown automatically if no standby destinations available for log transfer. To avoid this at least two log_archive_dest are needed.
Max protection mode will shutdown if lgwr, async and noaffirm is used.
Max Availability will behave like max performance mode when no standby archive destinations available.
Max Availability will remain in max availability mode when standby redo logs will not available.
So it will depend on the business
Best Regards
mseberg

Query regarding upgrading protection mode in a data guard
I am using Oracle 10g in Linux platform
Consider that I have a logical standby and a physical standby and now I want to upgrade the protection mode of physical standby but want the logical standby to retain the protection mode .
According to the Oracle documentation they have specified that the following statement has to be issued from primary to upgrade protection mode of a standby
SQL > Alter database set standby database to maximum availability; So to which standby this statement will refer to, whether logical standby or physical standby?Hi,
What you want to do is very possible. Please not however the protection mode DOES NOT apply to a standby when you say a database has a certain protection mode, it applies to the primary.
First to be in maximum availability you have to issue the command you state, and that applies to the primary, it is now in maximum availability but to get there it must have ONE standby that uses LGWR SYNC as the transport mechanism with AFFIRM.
You can also have other standby's running from this primary, that DO NOT have to use LGWR SYNC, but can use the other available tranport mechanisms.
This is explained here:

Portal Work Protect mode is not working properly after upgrade to NW 7.4
The portal Work protect mode value is set to '3' ("Choose action in popup on unsaved data")
When we edit a standard ESS java Web Dynpro application and click exit, the portal should show us the Work protect mode popup.
Instead, the portal exits to the overview page and when we try to navigate away from the overview page, it shows the work protect mode window.
This was working fine before upgrade to SAP NW 7.4 SP 5.
Please let me know if anyone have faced this issue before or have an resolution.
Thank you.Hi Sundar & Rakesh
I've followed Sundar's request in the previous thread we worked on together to provide further assistance here:
** Scenario Summary **
The portal Work protect mode value is set to '3' ("Choose action in popup on unsaved data") When we edit a standard ESS java Web Dynpro application and click exit, the portal should show us the Work protect mode popup. Instead, the portal exits to the overview page and when we try to navigate away from the overview page, it shows the work protect mode window. This was working fine before upgrade to SAP NW 7.4 SP 5.
Ok the first point of reference and analysis here is to check and review: Workprotect mode via the following navigation path:
System Admin-> System Configuration -> Service Configuration -> Under one of the services: Work protect mode property.
Now in terms of this popup kindly ensure the configurations are setup accordingly as per the following document:
http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-2513
What is the setting of WDPortalWorkProtectMode.setApplicationDirty ?
Work Protect Mode
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/45/b76f4169e25858e10000000a1550b0/content.htm
Lastly have you attempted to change the property value and restarting the service ?
Restart the config by right clicking on com.sap.portal.epcf.loader. Click Administrate ->restart
Kindly update me as per your findings.
Kind Regards

Acrobat Reader X Disable Protection mode
Hi All,
i need some help with this freaky Acrobat Reader X version.
We have currently ~1000 computers with different old versions of AR (form 6 to 9)
We need to upgrade to 10.0.1 version all PC's
Will use SCCM for distributing the package.
OK... everything here seems good but ... a lot of problems and erros appear.
First we've installed on test group of 10 pc's the AR 10.0.0
all users start complainig that they can't open the pdf's from our file servers.
Solution - bring the patch 10.0.1
After that all users start complaining that they can't print - Windows Error - Acrobat need to be closed !
Solution - Protection mode disabled.
My questions :
1. How can I distribute both the Package of Acrobat and the update together with SCCM
All my tries and reaings failed !!!
i've try different methods and no success
msiexec /i /q \\server\d$\Workstation Baseline\AcrobatReaderX\AcroRead.msi TRANSFORMS="AcroRead.mst" PATCH=\\server\d$\Workstation Baseline\AcrobatReaderX\adbeRdrUpd1001_Tier1.msp
this do not work for me This is in SCCM program
2. How can i disable through Adobe Wizard the Protection Mode ?
I know how to do it manually but is not acceptable this way - i can't communicate with 1000 users to do this manually
I know how to disable it from registry with GPO , but i can't disable it before installation, also i can't disable it on all PC's after installation, because it will take several days to complete for all pc's and this "hole" of some days will stop the work of our end-users.
Any fresh ideia is wellcome. Also any help
Thankshey,
had similar issues with protection mode.
found we can do it 2 ways, 1. via registry entry, or 2. via an ADM.
sorry cannot remember the referenced posts for the fixes below...
we use the adm so that users cannot change it, and so that updates dont reset it.
note that the adm has only a few settings, and i dont know the code for any other settings.
1. - REG method:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown]
"bProtectedMode"=dword:00000000
REM: Above line Disables Protected Mode on startup
2. - ADM Template method
please note, just copy and paste into a text file and rename as .adm.
remember that on the last section of the code below, change the "YOUR HEADER HERE" bit to what you want to use to find it in the GPO manager once you add the template.

Adobe reader X cannot open in protected mode
I am getting the message "Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode due a problem with your system configuration.
None of the threads or other troubleshooting tips I've found have resolved this.
Just clicking on the Adobe Reader icon by itself causes the problem.

I have no sound when playing Flash videos on any Windows 7 PCs from the following standard websites - YouTube, CNN, CSPAN and ESPN. Some YouTube videos provide both video and audio if I enable HTML5. Most do not. CSPAN Videos provide video but no audio. CNN Videos provide video but no audio. I have no problems on any Windows XP PCs.
I have had no sound in Firefox since Firefox 12 with Flash Player 11.3 and higher. I upgraded today to 11.4.402.287 Flash to see if that would fix things. It did not.
I only get sound if I disable Flash Protected Mode which is unacceptable in my corporate environment. I can not downgrade to Flash 11.2 because it too does not provide protected mode. My audio drivers are up to date. I tried changing the audio playback to 16-bit 44100. I have disabled Silverlight. I have disabled all plugins except Flash. All test sites show the Flash version as installed and correct.
Nothing I try among all the recommended solutions I have found on Forums.Adobe or elsewhere on the Internet resolves the problem.
As of today, I am running:
Windows 7
Firefox 16
Flash 11.4.402.287
I will provide whatever debugging information I need to to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. My Windows XP customers are being upgraded to Windows 7 over the next few months and I need to resolve this issue asap. Any help from Adobe staff will be greatly appreciated.
Please let me know what I can do to resolve this problem without disabling protected mode or back-revving to Flash 11.2.
Thank you.LBTLBT does sound different from my problem. Thought I could help...
Jeromie, thanks for your attentiveness. I wish more of Adobe's support structure (especially for their professional software) was more helpful/prompt/polite.

Unable to save PDF - Internet Explorer Protected Mode "A file error has occurred"
Hi,
I hope you can all assist! Here's the detail:
Reader XI (11.0.06) and deployed as physical installation (.msi)
Windows 7 x64 Enterprise
Internet Explorer 8 & 9
Opening PDF's from HTTP & HTTPS locations
Users are unable to save the PDF file to their chosen location (network share or local directory) "A file error has occurred".
When the Internet Explorer Protected Mode is switched off, users are able to save the file to their chosen location.
Is this is specific functionality of IE Protected Mode whereby the ActiveX control is being restricted.
Is this due to Enhanced security within the Adobe Reader 11.0.06 application?
Our current Reader version (9.3.0) is able to save files from unprotected locations, so this is creates a problem justify upgrading.
Do anyone have any suggestions?
Look forward to any assistance or suggestions.
Thanks,
Simon.Hi Simon,
How are you saving the file (right click or from File menu)? Does the problem happen with any PDF file? Does the problem go away if you turn "Enable Protected Mode at startup" from Reader (Preferences > Security (Enhanced)? -
ReaderX, WinXP SP3, Protected Mode for Admins
Hello,
We are having an issue running Reader X on Windows XP SP3 ***IF*** the Windows user is a member of the Local Admin group, it will not open in protected mode. **IF** the Windows user is a member of the local user group, Reader will open in protected mode. This happens whether we try to open PDF for just the application.
I reviewed the link provided with the Protected mode window, and the only item I could find that fit my situation was the fact that I had Symantec's Endpoint Protection (SEP) installed. We were at a lower version than was stated so we upgraded. That seemed to resolve it for a Windows User but not a Windows Admin.
I entered case with Symantec, but we determined it wasn't a Symantec issue, since after uninstalling SEP the error can be replicated.
Any comments or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Luckly 99% of our users belong to the Local Windows User group.
Is this working by design?
Thanks Amy[ moved to the Enterprise Deployment forum ]

Dataguard 'max protection' mode failed
Testing Dataguard in MAX PROTECTION mode on Oracle 10.2.0.4 on Solaris x86_64.
Test 1: Primary remained up allowing transactions to continue inspite of the fact that the server running the standby database was not reachable. Waited for over 10 minutes and then cancelled the test. All that happened was the protection_level changed to resynchronization. I could not believe my eyes. Is this possible?
Test 2: The primary shutdown automatically but after about 6 minutes of the standby database was shut abort. So what about all those transactions that took place during those 6 minutes? Those would be lost - isnt it?
I just cant believe this. Where am I going wrong? I confirmed that LAD_2 was set to lgwr sync affirm. And that protection mode was set to 'maximum protection'.
Somebody, pls enlighten me?
Thanks
Edited by: user12022918 on 27-May-2013 08:42If you have several physical standby database for the same primary database then this could be expected behaviour otherwise this looks like a bug that you should report to Oracle Support who will very likely ask you to upgrade at least to 10.2.0.5 patchset or 11.2.0.3.

Adobe Reader requiring Protected mode disabled
I know this is somehow a 3rd party related problem, however I would like to discuss why this is happening.
We upgraded our servers from 2008 R2 to 2012 and suddenly Adobe Reader started to get" There was an error opening this document. Access denied." I wonder why this is happening. I found that edit >preferences > disable "Enable protected
mode at startup" would fix the problem.
I also wonder if this also is not related to Windows Server 2012 standard, but only happens when deduplication is enabled as all our data drives are deduplicated now (with great success).Although this is probably an Adobe Reader issue, but same thing here: Adobe Reader 11.0.7 with same options enabled and now on Server 2012R2 RDS saying 'access denied' which only can be solved by disabeling 'Protected mode', what nobody actually wants.
Any solutions available? -
Oracle Datagaurd protection mode
Hi,
I am working on Oracle 10.2.0.4 version on Solaris 9. I am using ASM for storage.
I have a DG setup, which i wanted to have one primary and 2 physical standby databases in MAX AVAILABILITY & MAX PERFORMANCE mode respecitively. I successfully setup the DG environment but would like to know if there is any type of verification or views that show that what standby is performing in what mode(v$dataguard_status,v$managed_standby, etc).
I have used the following log_archive_dest_n on the primary database entries for enabling the protection modes.
log_archive_dest_1 LOCATION=USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST VALID_FOR=(ALL_LOGFILES,A
LL_ROLES) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=testdb_1
log_archive_dest_2 SERVICE=testdb_2 OPTIONAL LGWR SYNC AFFIRM VALID_FOR=
(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=testdb_2
log_archive_dest_3 SERVICE=testdb_3 OPTIONAL ARCH ASYNC AFFIRM VALID_FOR=
(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=testdb_3 I want to put
1) testdb_2 standby in MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY
2) testdb_3 standby in MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE
I built the testdb_2 physical standby first and upgraded the protection mode to MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY and is working fine (this is using real time log apply).
I built the testdb_3 phyisical standby second and just started the redo apply using "alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session).
The whole DG setup is working fine with applying logs. But my main question is that when i give "select protection_mode, protection_level from v$database" on primary database, it shows only the "MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY" mode. Where do i see that MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE mode is existing too for this DG environment? Is there any view or do we just confirm this by seeing the managed recovery processes in the v$managed_standby view?
Any information or documentation links would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
HarrisWell, the information Uwe Hesse was provided is contradicting.
The protection mode is infact is a property of primary database but it the standby database, which defines it, which is directly related to the REDO TRANSPORT mode that we use. Because, when you upgrade the protection mode, you issue it on the primary database and use the standby clause in it.. as follows
alter database set standby database to maximize [protection|availability|performance]As mentioned before, i used the ARCH ASYNC mode for putting the second standby database in the MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE mode and my question was as where to see that this database is working in the PERFORMANCE protection mode. When i used the ARCH transport mode, the PROTECTION_MODE & PROTECTION_LEVEL on both Primary and 2 standby databases were showing as MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY mode. But the redo transport was working as expected in respective protection modes.
Since, we can use either LGWR ASYNC or ARCH ASYNC for MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE mode, i changed the redo transport mode for the 2nd standby database (testdb_3) and using real time apply using following command,
alter database recover managed standby database using current logfile through all switchover disconnect from session;the 2nd standby database(testdb_3) started showing that primary database is working in MAXIMUM PERfORMANCE mode in the control file where as the the 1st standby database (testdb_2) is showing that the primary database is working in the MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY mode. Following are the different protection status being shown by the primary & standby databases. I think this is the way you find what standby database is working in what protection mode respectively.
ON TESTDB_1 (PRIMARY DATABASE)
SQL> select protection_mode, protection_level from v$database;
PROTECTION_MODE PROTECTION_LEVEL
MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY
ON TESTDB_2 (STANDBY DATABASE using LGWR SYNC)
SQL> select protection_mode, protection_level from v$database;
PROTECTION_MODE PROTECTION_LEVEL
MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY
ON TESTDB_3 (STANDBY DATABASE using LWGR ASYNC)
SQL> select protection_mode, protection_level from v$database;
PROTECTION_MODE PROTECTION_LEVEL
MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE MAXIMUM PERFORMANCESo, the protection mode is not primarily a property of the primary database but it is defined by the standby database and the redo transport is part of it as well, which was my initial understanding too. Though the 2nd standby database is geographically distant from the primary database, as i am using the LGWR ASYNC, there is no impact on the primary database performance.
Correct me if i am wrong, well atleast i have shown you what Oracle Software is reporting regarding the status.
Thanks,
Harris.

EPM (Enhanced Protection Mode)
I am using IE9 (Win7--64-bit). Why am I being asked to Disable EPM in Internet Explorer? EPM was introduced in IE10 and 11!! I did disable Protection Mode in my settings, but each time I attempted to open a pdf document, the "...Disable EPM in
Internet Explorer..." message would surface. Any nuggets of wisdom? I do not want to use IE10 nor IE 11.
Thanks epHow are you opening the PDF file? Adobe Reader? What version? The latest?
That something you're running thinks you need to disable EPM may be a matter of that
something not getting what it expects/needs from your system.
I have no specific knowledge about what Adobe Reader expects/needs, but it's not hard to imagine their latest version of the Add-on doesn't get tested too much working with an outdated browser version. And much as you may love it, IE9 is outdated.
No one can blame you for not wanting to upgrade to a newer browser version, given that a lot of incompatibilities were introduced in IE10 and IE11, but software tech does march on whether we like it or not, and if you've chosen to hang back with old
software you need to understand that you might need to be conservative about what you upgrade. In a "big picture" sense, it won't be a viable way to continue forever. You'll simply see more and more niggling little things go wrong.
In this case it just sounds to me like a current Add-on doesn't work with an outdated browser - not hard to believe.

How will I know when Flash Player will run with out crashing in Protected Mode?
Firefox 15.0.1 had to disable Flash Player Protection Mode to view flash videos. I want to know how I will know when to enable Protection Mode.
It is a case of try it after upgrades and see if it works.
There will probably be celebrations if and when it is fixed ;-)
I have not noticed any Firefox staff predicting imminent fixes.
(Which reminds me I need to try something, I remembered reading about a novel solution that I have not yet tried) -
Reader 10.0.1 protected mode problems
I just upgraded from 10.0.0 to 10.0.1. (Windows 7 x64, SEP 11 RU6mp2 for antivirus) While reader 10.0.0 worked just fine, I cannot get 10.0.1 to open without disabling protected mode. I have seen the same problem on another machine running Win2003 server r2 x64.
This appears to be caused by folder redirection/roaming profiles. 10.0.1
works if I log on locally. Am I more secure using 10.0.0 with p
rotected mode or 10.0.1 without protected mode?
