Query regarding upgrading protection mode in a data guard

I am using Oracle 10g in Linux platform
Consider that I have a logical standby and a physical standby and now I want to upgrade the protection mode of physical standby but want the logical standby to retain the protection mode .
According to the Oracle documentation they have specified that the following statement has to be issued from primary to upgrade protection mode of a standby
SQL > Alter database set standby database to maximum availability; So to which standby this statement will refer to, whether logical standby or physical standby?

Hi,
What you want to do is very possible. Please not however the protection mode DOES NOT apply to a standby when you say a database has a certain protection mode, it applies to the primary.
First to be in maximum availability you have to issue the command you state, and that applies to the primary, it is now in maximum availability but to get there it must have ONE standby that uses LGWR SYNC as the transport mechanism with AFFIRM.
You can also have other standby's running from this primary, that DO NOT have to use LGWR SYNC, but can use the other available tranport mechanisms.
This is explained here:

  • How to add two protection mode in oracle data guard

    Hi all,
We have a discussion on oracle physical data guard yesterday.....
As we all know that data guard has 3 protection mode
    1. Maximum Performance
    2. Maximum Availability (Default)
    3. Maximum Protection
Now we were discussing about is it possible to have two protection mode on same data guard simultaneously... for e.g. Maximum performance and maximum availability.
We have searched a lot but don't find any help on google.
Can any one help on this with any doc, pdf or links..
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi,
you don't find anything on this because it's not possible and would make no sense even if you could do it.
Maximum Availability uses SYNC commit between primary and standby db. If you combine Max. Availabilty with Max. Performance then your db clients have to wait on commit until primary and the max. availability standby have commited. That they would not have to wait on another Max. Performance DB doesn't change anything to the client. You would only combine the disadvantages of both approaches, the wait on sync commit for max. availability and beeing not in sync with primary for the max. performance db.
The max. protection mode requires by definition that the primary db shuts down in case no standby can process the commit. If the primary is not up and running it is pointless to have another (max. availability) standby db at hand, if this max. availability db would take over the service this would violate the defintion of max. protection. No Dataloss is valued higher than db availability, having the data commited only on one db site is not allowed.

  • Upgrading protection mode

I've never used any Data Guard protection mode except Maximum Performance before so please forgive me if my questions seem ignorant.
I have a primary DB with 2 standbys both currently operating in maximum performance mode. The primary is a 2 node RAC cluster. Both standbys are single instance. None of the databases in the configuration use standby logs (yet). I am currently using ARCH to ship the logs to both standbys. All databases are running version 11.2. I am not using Data Guard broker.
I am considering upgrading just standby # 2 to maximum availability protection mode, but I'm not sure if it's really what I want or not. Perhaps someone here with a better understanding can confirm for me whether its the best choice.
My goal is to achieve the maximum data protection possible with no performance impact whatsoever on the primary database.
If I understand maximum availability correctly (and I am not certain I do), a commit issued on the primary will not complete until the maximum availability standby has acknowledged receipt of the redo data. If the link between the two goes down, that could introduce a significant delay in the commit. Is that correct? In my situation any performance impact on the primary DB is unacceptable.
Perhaps what I want is maximum performance using standby logs, with the LGWR and ASYNC attributes enabled on the corresponding log_archive_dest_n parameter. If I understand that correctly, a commit on the primary will complete as soon as the redo is written to the local redo log and the availability of the standby destination will have no performance impact at all. In general the standby will remain only a few seconds behind the primary. If the link between the two goes down, I can alert myself to the situation with a simple query of v$dataguard_stats and correct whatever the underlying problem is.
Can someone please confirm for me whether I am understanding the behavior of commits under these two different protection modes and transport modes?
Also, if I do create standby logs for the one destination, do I also need to create them on the primary and other standby as well.
    Thanks.

    Here's what I can think of :
Max protection mode will shutdown automatically if no standby destinations available for log transfer. To avoid this at least two log_archive_dest are needed.
Max protection mode will shutdown if lgwr, async and noaffirm is used.
Max Availability will behave like max performance mode when no standby archive destinations available.
Max Availability will remain in max availability mode when standby redo logs will not available.
So it will depend on the business

  • Protection type for Acrive Data Guard

    Hi all,
I am looking at implementing a 11G R2 active data guard solution and need to do live reporting from the physical standby database.
I need confirmation of the protection mode I will need. (I think it's Maximum Protection).
    Many thanks
    VicC

Sorry, I just realized that I misunderstood your Question as "What Protection Modes can I have with FAST-START FAILOVER".
For Real-Time Query, you can be in any Protection Mode.

  • Query regarding passing of an internal table data to a form

    Hi All,
Please help me out regardingmy query.
I have a standard driver program and a Z form(SAPSCRIPT). Suppose i have an RFQ and it has number of line items in it, I need to fetch them all for a RFQ and then pass to the form and as this functionality is not available in the driver program, i want to  achieve via a subroutine pool. Passing of the data via the itcsy structure and all or by calling a write_form and passing the element to it.
Can u all let me know whether i can pass the data ie., multipe records of data to form from a program otehr than the driver program?
    Regards
    Priya

    Hi Priya,
Why you need separate subroutine, you will find all the required data in the driver program itself.
Just identify the Standard Subroutine in NACE tcode,
For all Standard Driver program is SAPFM06P
    For RFQ
    Application type is 'EA'
    Output types are
    1) New
    2) Reminder
    3) Quotation rejection
Further standard subroutines used for each output type are
    1)ENTRY_NEU  -  New
    2)ENTRY_MAHN - Reminder
    3)ENTRY_ABSA - Quotation rejection
and the above mentioned subroutines get the data required for the corresponding sapscript

  • Query Regarding transfer of WBS element change data

    Hi All,
We have a requirement in which we need to transfer the change/create/delete information for WBS element in SAP to a third party system for certain set of specified fields.
The problem we are facing is that the change and create information dosen't get updated in the CDHDR and CDPOS tables, but the master table for WBS element (PRPS).
One way of fetching the change information is to compare the old and new field values for the specified fields, which seems to be a tedious job.
Just wanted to know if there is any other possible solution to the above requirement????
    Thanks in advance,
    Manish Gupta

You should also include Oracle Warehouse Builder in your evaluation. It uses Oracle gateways to pull data from 3rd party databases and supports loading from flat files as well. If these data sources support ODBC, then you might be able to load via the ODBC (Generic Connectivity Gateway), wouldn't be super fast, but it you could manage the dowtime...

  • Query regarding upgrading speed after phone call.

    Hi
I'm hoping someone can help point me in the right direction as I'm not sure about the following.
Around January this year I went broadband and received a 7mb connection and noticed that I was due to be upgraded in my area to 11mb in March and the sales confirmed It would be upgraded when it arrives.
So yesterday I did a check and it says 11mb now through BT check site, so I have checked my connection through the speed test and hub.
    Speed test results.
Download speed achieved during the test was - 6104 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps.
    My home hub records this.
    Line state
    Connected
    Connection time
    0 days, 17:31:56
    Downstream
    8,128 Kbps
    Upstream
    448 Kbps
    ADSL settings
    VPI/VCI
    0/38
    Type
    PPPoA
    Modulation
    ITU-T G.992.1
    Latency type
    Fast
    Noise margin (Down/Up)
    4.6 dB / 22.0 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up)
    29.0 dB / 18.0 dB
    Output power (Down/Up)
    19.8 dBm / 12.2 dBm
It has ip profile at 7150Kpbs which I take is my locked connection speed.
I have phoned the help line and a gentleman told me all is ok and I'm upgraded to the new speed  yet my ip and DSL connection rate are not the 11mb so I was hoping or wondering if this need to be changed and the gentleman may not have understood what I was trying to say.
Do BT just upgrade when your area has been done or do I have to phone again to double check I now have the new improved speed?
I would be very grateful for any help on the above.
    Mhis
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just to say I phoned the number who then put me through to tech team who then told me that even though BT site shows 11mb now in my area on my number it maybe until September when the upgrade is available.
The young lady gave me another number and told me they would be able to tell me when the upgrade would be likely and the number was 0800 0853608.
I gave this number a ring and I believe its BT wholesales and a nice chap simply said he can't help me with that.
So I guess even though the checker here BT check your speed shows me 11mb now it must be wrong as its not available. A little bit confused over that!

  • Quick query regarding upgrade work

I live in pevensey bay in east sussex. We recieved an email yesterday saying there would be upgrade work taking place at some point today, and we would lose our broadband and phones for a while. we're on option 2 for broadband on the up to 8MB plan. We usually get about 2MB.
This may be completely unrelated, but we had a huge storm earlier. The homehub lost sync for a few minutes, and now it's come back up, it's got a downstream speed of 2,624 Kbps. Our normal speed is about 1,097 Kbps, but this drops down to about 512Kbps after a few days.
The speed increase is very strange, and it seems to be staying at that speed, which it has NEVER done before.
Does anyone (preferably from bt) know whether this speed increase is anything to do with the work we were told would take place today, or is it completely unrelated?
I would try rebooting the homehub to see if it syncs above 2MB still, but I don't want to risk the possibility of the speed lowering again...lol.

There's an alternative explanation. A poor connection somewhere on the line will cause a high resistance ("HR") fault. A characteristic of this is bursts of noise which force the router to resync at progressively lower speeds, until a stable rate is established. A storm can temporarily clear an HR fault by movement of the overhead wiring (this happened to me). Sadly, the fault will come back again. Another characteristic of an HR fault is a rustling or crackling noise in the background of telephone calls. Try this: dial 17070, pick option 2, (BT Line Test, quiet line) and listen. You should hear almost nothing. If you DO hear noises, report your phone faulty as "noisy line" - that will also be causing the slow broadband.
Note that if the router syncs at a very low speed, it WON'T restore itself if the line condition improves. You have to force a resync yourself (reboot or just disconnect the line for a few seconds). That's just the way the system works....

  • Regarding chossing the Business Partner Master Data

    Dear All,
I have one query regarding chossing the Business Partner Master Data. Let take an exapmle
suppose 2 sales person are making the sales Quotation and every sales Persons only making the quotaion
for the specified leads or customers.Suppose Sales Person 'A' makes the quotaiton for 5 Leads and Sales
Person 'B' makes the quotation for the different 5 persons. Now i want when  i Login into sales person 'A' Login
and choose the Business Partner by pressing tab in sales quotation window , then that Sales Person 'A' can
see only the Specified BP list which are belonging to his region.
    Thanks All.

The access to Item Master and BP Master cannot be restricted to Users through Authorization. This is a known limitation of SBO.
You can try this by using SDK.
You can use Data Ownership Authorization, which means the marketing documents created by Sales Person 'A' will not be viewed by Sales Person 'B'
    Refer this thread for details

  • Oracle Data Guard 9i

This is a quote from an Oracle publication on Oracle Data Guard 9i.
"Oracle Data Guard's new SQL Apply feature creates a "logical standby" that enables continuous access to a working copy of your primary database. With SQL Apply, the standby database is continuously available for reporting and other operations, while always at-the-ready for unplanned failovers. Data Guard provides log shipping, remote mirroring, zero-data-loss disaster protection, and a single point of control and automation. "
My question is: Is the standby database open in read-write or read-only mode?
If, its only read, is there ANY other way read-write version of a database could be created at a remote site besides:
    a) Complete copying - duplicate database at remote site open in read-write.
    b) Distributed database - replication - remote users access their own version and the two keep themselves in sync.
    c) Parallel server - one database - two instances.

Data Guard is available for Linux (within Oracle9i).
It's a tool to make it much more easier to create a standby
    database, but I don't think it's required!
    Regards,
    Thomas.
Is Oracle 9i data guard for Linux available??
Well, my real question is, I need to setup 9i standby database
on Linux. Do I need data guard installed in order to setup
    standby database??

  • Delete expired   data guard

    Hi,
I got a question regarding the primary db and the data guard db. I had to reduce the amount of files retained due to space limitations on the primary. When I clicked on the delete expired button and the job is run the files that are deleted on the primary are they also deleted on the data guard db? If not will this cause a problem if when a fail over or switch over is needed?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Good Morning Kam Singh
I just have one additional question that occurred to me last night at home. There was an issue with hard parsing that my ADDM advised increasing my SGA by 2.5 gigs. Someone on the forum here was kind enough to give me the view V$sgainfo to find out how much free memory was available in my system. Well when I interrogated this view it came up with a big fat zero availability. Now from what I understood from my readings was that 10g sga was dynamic. That the memory processes are adjusted to need from information taken from the AWR. At the page where the ADDM listed a button to implement the change (increase) I hesitated until I found out how much free was available. Right now I am glad that I did. My question is If I did click on that implementation button would have the oem tool taken the memory not being used from some other location and allocate it to this spot or would it have returned an error of some kind?
You may have more experience with this and may have come across this situation than I. Do you recall what you did?
Does anyone else recall what they did in this situation?
    Please give advise.
    Regards to all,
    al

  • Portal Work Protect mode is not working properly after upgrade to NW 7.4

The portal Work protect mode value is set to '3' ("Choose action in popup on unsaved data")
When we edit a standard ESS java Web Dynpro application and click exit, the portal should show us the Work protect mode popup.
Instead, the portal exits to the overview page and when we try to navigate away from the overview page, it shows the work protect mode window.
This was working fine before upgrade to SAP NW 7.4 SP 5.
Please let me know if anyone have faced this issue before or have an resolution.
    Thank you.

    Hi Sundar & Rakesh
I've followed Sundar's request in the previous thread we worked on together to provide further assistance here:
    ** Scenario Summary **
The portal Work protect mode value is set to '3' ("Choose action in popup on unsaved data") When we edit a standard ESS java Web Dynpro application and click exit, the portal should show us the Work protect mode popup. Instead, the portal exits to the overview page and when we try to navigate away from the overview page, it shows the work protect mode window. This was working fine before upgrade to SAP NW 7.4 SP 5.
Ok the first point of reference and analysis here is to check and review: Workprotect mode via the following navigation path:
System Admin-> System Configuration -> Service Configuration -> Under one of the services: Work protect mode property.
Now in terms of this popup kindly ensure the configurations are setup accordingly as per the following document:
    http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-2513
What is the setting of WDPortalWorkProtectMode.setApplicationDirty ?

Lastly have you attempted to change the property value and restarting the service ?
Restart the config by right clicking on com.sap.portal.epcf.loader. Click Administrate ->restart
Kindly update me as per your findings.

  • Data Guard Protection mode

How to set Data Protection Mode of a Primary Database? Setting only LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2 parameter will do?

    Hello;
    Welcome to the forum.
No. LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2 is almost always used to the the location of a standby database.
By default Data Guard will be in MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE mode.
