UPS for my network

OK guys, I am not electrical engineer, so I need some help here.
This is my issue:
I am planning to purchase a UPS to cover my small network. It consists of:
- iMac 24" (Lion) with two external hard disks, both powered from the USB ports.
- Mac Mini Server (previous year, Lion) with two external disks powered by small brick converters.
What I would like from the UPS, is to provide enough time for the iMac and the Mac Mini to shut down gracefully when the power fails. Ideally, the UPS should send a signal to the two machines instructing them to shut down (I think this is possible with the Apple computers, not sure, hence the question). I would also like the UPS to be capable of powering itself up, and hence power up the computers, after a power failure. Finally, of course, I would like the UPS to provide protection to the computers, in case of over- or under-voltage conditions.
My main questions are:
- How many VA should the UPS be, to cover these two computers and perhaps a couple of Linksys routers? I know there is a formula that allows you to calculate that, so if you can give it to me, I would appreciate it.
- What brands would you suggest? I know that you US residents have access to much more brands than we have here, but give me your thoughts and I'll see what I can find locally. APC does exist here, I think this is a brand you have in US too.
- Wbat else should I know before I buy the UPS? Anything that can help me make the right decision would be appreciated.
Many thanks for your attention.

I just thought of something. Is it possible for one UPS to notify more than one computers that the power is down, so that the computers can switch themselves off? If not, then I could purchase two smaller UPSs instead of a large one, and dedicate each one to one of my computers.
Again, many thanks

  • Minimum UPS for Xserve G4

I was wondering what the minimum rackmount UPS for a Xserve G4 Dual 1.3GHz would be. I was thinking of getting a Smart-UPS SC 450VA 120V. I only have a 4U rack.

As DaddyPaycheck indicated, it depends mainly how long the UPS should be able to power the XServe.
If you just want to use it for filtering power and have a decent time period to shut down the server, a small UPS like the one you mentioned is surely more than sufficient.
But if you intend to keep the server working during a (short) power outage, a more stronger UPS is recommended. We currently have two XServes and some network equipment on a 1200 VA unit, which appears acceptable for our environment (last year just one power outage that took less than five minutes).
Also take a look into the near future. When you already plan to get another server or other computer equipment soon, you may invest into a more powerful UPS right away.

  • Recommendations for a UPS for PC's

Check out my post on sizinghttp://community.spiceworks.com/topic/297377-how-to-size-your-next-upsbut in truth you will pay a premium to be able to monitor the UPS over the network. I don't know that you gain much either, I don't know of anyone doing it like this, in situations where all PC's are on small UPS they are typically connected by USB.To be able to connect to the network you now need an extra network port at each desk. You also need the network shutdown agent on each PC. Each PC needs to be configured for it's own UPS, or vice-versa.What do you expect to gain from centrally managing them?I don't know that you want to centrally shut down PC's, how will the users know to save, etc?I would maybe look at USB connected UPS and test to see if Spiceworks can detect them via a scan of the PC. YMMV but I didn't have any luck doing...

I'm looking for suggestions as to what to use for a UPS for PC's that can monitor if the power goes out and will shut the PC down after a few minutes and also be centrally managed and monitored.
Currently I have experience using Tripp Lite UPS 550's but they connect with a USB cable and I don't think they can be managed over the network.  I could be wrong on that.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks!

My iPhone 4s won't allow me to scan for any networks and won't even pull up wifi networks near by. How do I fix this?

Settings > General > Network > Reset Network Settings.
If that does not resolve the issue...
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Has any of this been tried?

Where is the hyphen on the apple TV?  I am trying to set up my network and there is a hyphen in the password for the network

    A few options to try:
They hyphen should be next to the + on the character map.
If you are still having issues, provided your ATV software is up to date, you can now connect an Apple Wireless Keyboard through bluetooth connections.
Change your network password so it does not use a hyphen

    Dear Experts,
I want to see Material Consumption for
for WBSE 281Q (Project to Project)
for Network 221Q (Network from Project)
I can see values in Report MB51,
but I can not see for which WBSE it is consumed or from which WBSE it is consumed.
The Entries are there in table MSEG field MAT_PSPNR.
It is not shown in Report MB51, For this column blank is shown, no value is shown.
Can you help me, how can I see material consumption for WBSE & Network with WBSE ID for/from which.
    Thanks

    Dear Muralee,
I think I am not able to explain you the thing or you are not getting what I want to say.
In my first post I have said:
    I am trying MB51, with
    221Q Project to Project GI
    281Q Project to Network GI.
I am getting material consumption quantities,
Network/Activities for which consumption is done is also shown.
But the WBSE for which / from which consumption is done, that column is blank.
It is showing WBSE for 101 GR for Project
I want to know for which /from which WBSE material was consumed?
I have tried to explain problem again.
    Can you please help?

  • I've forgotten my Wi-Fi password for a network set-up years ago and am trying to include a new iMac on the same network. How can I do this?

I've forgotten my wi-fi password for a home network set-up years ago on a Powerbook. I'm now trying to add a new iMac to the same network so I can have 2 hooked up. How can I retrieve my password for the network I created or can I set-up a new one? I did try the latter, but it didn't seem to work on the new iMac for some reason. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    HI, Welcome to the Forums...
The password may be stored in your keychain on the system you set up the original PowerBook.
Run KeyChain access in the utilities filder and see if you have a Airport base station password entry, from this you can reveal the password.

  • How can I keep lion from generating .DS_Store files on windows network partitions, but not disable it for all network partitions?

How can I keep lion from generating .DS_Store files on windows network partitions, but not disable it for all network partitions?  I am fimilar with changing the setting for all network partitions(defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true), but that is undesirable when I connect my laptop to my home network. A preferable solution would be where I could control the writing of these files based on disk format (NTFS vs HFS+).

Go to MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and search for ds_store. There are numerous utilities for preventing them from being transferred to Windows systems.

It's in your Keychain on the computer you usually use to connect to your network - the "kind" will be "AirPort Network Password".
Your Keychain can be opened by using the Keychain Access program. It is in your Utilities Folder.
Open Keychain Access, and type airport in the search field. You will see a number of entries. Choose the one with the name of your wireless network, open it, and check the box next to "show password". Before it reveals itself you will be asked for your login password - the one you use to log in to your MacBook.
The network password will appear in the box.
    Quit Keychain Access.

Has anyone else had issues with phone network being unavailable on iPhone 4 since updating to iOS 5.0.1? My iPhone 4 is continually searching for a network and does not find AT&T, my provider. I swapped SIM cards with another iPhone 4 running ios 4 and established this is a device problem, not a SIM card problem.

Does the device get any signal?
Sounds like the device may have had a hardware failure.  If it is out of warranty, the only option is the Out of Warranty replacement.
AppleCare is only an option if it is still under the original warranty.

  • I am trying to restrict color printing on my laserjet 4700dn for my network

Here is my issue.  I am trying to restrict color printing on my Laserjet 4700dn for my network.  I have configured it for "color if Allowed" and all works perfectly.  I was then going to allow certain users to print in color so I started by configuring my username and allow color.  Every time I print it is still in black and white.  I then decided to look at the color usage log and what I found would explain why.  The color usage log only shows the username of one user on my network.  All other jobs just show the date and number of pages.  So my issue is why can my printer not see all the other users and how do I configure it to do so.  Also why would only that one user show in the log.  It also does not show any applications but it does for that one user.  Is there something else that needs to be installed on the computers for it work?

  • Looking for Mac network professional to setup our small business network.

I've installed OS X Server on an iMac within our office to act as a file server and also allow us to access files using a VPN.  Probably should have purchased a Mac Mini Server and will likely go that route in the end.
I'm computer savy, but little networks experience and just can't get this working correctly. If we had more time to dedicate to this and with help from this forum, I'm sure we could get it up and running.  The goal is to get a simple network going that will allow us to access files, etc in the field and at our home offices with the ability to grow as our business expands.
At this time I'd really like to have someone just handle the setup of the network so we can get functionality asap.  I've done some searches and looked for a network professional in our area with experience in Mac networking within a business environment, but haven't had much luck.
If anyone point me in a direction of someone that can help get this going I'd be forever greatful:)

I'm not a rocket scientist but I do have a working mail server and website using a mini mac and os x server (Mavericks).
It all begins with your DNS and I recommend you do use a mac mini with OS X Server as it's designed for that very purpose. You absolutely must get your DNS situation working first. There's a guy in this forum named Mr. Hoffman who is particularly useful (there are others) in this area. He has a website with lots of helpful advice and, in particular, this: http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436.
However, before you embark on that journey, this is what you'll basically need to do:
You're going to need a public (external/public facing) DNS and a private (internal) DNS. Your private DNS (served by your os x server) needs to live behind some kind of hardware firewall/router to prevent the great unwashed and curious from venturing into places they probably shouldn't be venturing. It's port(s) should never be exposed to the outside world.
Get a static IP from your ISP and register a domain name.
Let your domain registrar provide the external DNS.
You'll want to set up an internal DNS using OS X Server in the 10.0.0.0/16 subnet (it doesn't seem to let you use 10.0.0.0/8 and it really hates 192.168.0.0/24).
The server itself will need to be "self-aware" by setting it's System Preferences > Network Preferences > DNS Server to 127.0.0.1.
Of course, once you get the DNS working you'll want to turn on File Sharing and then (and only then) Open Directory. THen you can begin adding other services such as web, mail, vpn, etc...
I'm sure there is lots more that I've missed but this should do for now. Good luck.
