URGENT.... Shutting down child processes
Hi,
My application is running under windows. Its a core-java application.
When I start the application it starts in a DOS window.
My program in the normal execution starts 3 child processes. A, B and C. I also have added a shutdown hook to the main program, where I destroy these processes when on the main program, someone presses
CTRL + C, but how to track if some lame user closes the DOS window. In this case the shutdown hook doesnt get invoked...
Help me out pls. I am unable to destroy the child processes when user closes the DOS window.

I went through this thread, but they are only talking about CTRL + C and not about closing the DOS window itself. When user closes the DOS window itself, there is no control coming in the program.
Is there a way to handle this ?

is this a cut-out from the alert.log DURING the upgrade?
How did you do the upgrade - DBUA or with catupgrd.sql?
Has the archivelog mode switched off during the upgrade?
Does the archiver start up again (do an 'archive log list' in SQL*Plus)?

Mac OS X takes very long to shut down because processes are still alive
Hello everyone!
Since the latest update to Safari 5.0.1, iTunes 9.2.1 and Trackpad Update, the system takes unusual long to shut down.
The screen gets the usual blue, a spinning wheel appears and is there for about 20-30 seconds.
Before the updates, it was about 5-10 seconds.
When booting in verbose mode, it tells me at shutdown that some core system processes (among them launchd and other boot stuff) are still alive (or, as the OS says, "PID XXXX is still alive").
The only thing to workaround (which isn't the solution for forever!) is to run "sudo shutdown -s 0" on the console.
Is there a way to avoid this waiting for still-alive processes?

Urgent: Shut down when lid closes problem
My Mabook pro / mid 2010 / Yosemite 10.10 shuts down when lid closes. This is new in the last few days, not after any system updates. It wont restart after lid opens again, unless repeatedly holding down power button for long periods. Strangely, the sleep light is on before I open the lid, but once lid is open, it's completely off.
Does anyone know the cause and/or fix for this? I'm really worried it's the beginning of the end, and I rely on this machine for work and need to travel in a few days! Thanks in advance for any trouble shooting tips.Just to clarify; when I say "this is new" I mean the problem, not the laptop.

Mail shuts down when processing junk
when fetching mails, mail did always shut down after some seconds. now (with junk settings inactive) everything works, but as soon as i try to classify a mail as junk, then mail shuts down immediately and i can't open the programm anymore...

Issue with shutting down all processes for patch install
I have been trying to install patch 6032088 on Win XP. I have shutdown my Oracle instance, processes and listeners. However, when I come to install the patch it fails because it cannot overwrite the oci.dll. This is due to the fact that a process is still using the file. How can I make sure all processes have stopped?
Thanks in advance.In my case, when the Microsoft service starts up, they take this lock on the oci.dll in the database home. they must have found it in the path and gotten it first.
Here is a note that discusses it happening. I am not sure which service starts up this msft com thing, but I'll shut some down and see when it stops happening.

it breaks patching/provisioning as well. i contemplated renaming it, or removing the home from the patch.. seems like renaming will be easier. how annoying. -
X120E - I accidentally shut down some processes. Is there a list?
In an attempt to free up some memory, I ended some processes. One of them happened to be the overlay when you press certain button combinations, such as FN+F1. They still function as normal, except the overlay isn't there. This also means I can't turn off my wireless radios. Can someone hand me a list of processes so that I can use it again?
EDIT: Damnit people, respond! please?Augustus, if all you did was go into task manager and end some processes, you should be able to just reboot and the processes will be restarted.
If you went into Services and disabled any of the services from starting when the machine boots, then you'll need to remember which you changed and set them to start automatically.

Oracle 10g - Not Shutting Down in Vista Home Premium.
Hello Guys.
I installed Oracle 10gR2 successfully on Vista Home Premium.. I can even make a table which logging as a Sysdba .. but when i want to Shutdown the database, it doesn't shutdown .
I re-installed Oracle 10gR2 thrice and create/delete database more than 10 times .. Still No luck ..

Yoy might have not created DB correctly or restored. So kindly drop everthing (DB), if it is a testing Machine, then Clear the Services First from machine Delete all files with respective DB and re-do the Job with out any mistakes.

Window 8.1 is not shutting down

For my lenovo laptop , Yesterday I updated Windows 8 to 8.1 from STORE.
Almost taken 2 hrs . Got the message sucessfully updated . later I made shut down . but its not shutting down ..its keep showing messgae shutting down and process is going on . Almost 2 to 3 hrs kept like that ..but no use . I tried force shut down . later
showing same progressing message of shutting down only .
Task manager ctrl alt del also not working... I do nt know , what to do . please help on this.

If it only remains in a shutting down process all the time, then we can do nothing, please hold on the power button to power down your PC, then reboot, check whether your PC can function fine. After boot into your PC, please view the event viewer,
find whether there're some error information recorded under item Windows logs\Application, setup, system.
View Windows update history under control panel\windows update, see if there're some failed updates, install them again.

I have problem shutting down mac book pro os x lion
I have setup os x lion on my mac book pro which i bought after 2010. Over 90% when i want to shut down, the process stop at the end and rounding circle appear for so long that i should turn off the system by pressing and holding power bottom. I do verify and repair the disk permission and for a while it is ok and after some times it is the same story. I even download and install the lion again but nothing happened. As i read over the apple forum some other has the same prob but no one knows how to fix. Smebody tells that it is belong to safari and other mention some other things. Pls kindlly help me.

Computer shuts down after start up
I have just updated my system and now its restarting, it goes to the startup and then i see the apple sign and i see a small bar underneath which is filling up, it doesnt even go half way and my macbook shuts down, this process is happening each time i am starting up macbook, i tried using command S and den trying to format, which does not work , i really need help on this matter

When your computer turns off with the progress bar on the display, it means that OS X is trying to repair your drive. If your Mac turns off, it means that fsck command couldn't repair the hard drive, so OS X can't start. Something happens with your hard drive.
If you have an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your computer is starting to start in OS X Recovery. Then, open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair the drive.
If it can be repaired, restart your computer and see if it can start. If not, you have to replace the hard drive.
Take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller only if your computer is in warranty or you don't want to do this yourself (the repair is free if it's in warranty). If it's not in warranty, have a look at a hard drive and install OS X on it. You can look for hard drives at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ -
Error message caused by an improper shut down
Hi
When I try and lunch the web services from server admin I get this message in the log.
Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 192.168.1.15 port 80
Is this error message caused by an improper shut down, the apache processes are still hanging around and apachectl restart won't work.
How can I clear them

Did you install/enable Apache 2 on your server? If so, that could be the problem since Server Admin only knows how to manage Apache 1.3, so can't restart Apache 2.0.
You can use the command-line tool lsof to find which process is listening to port 80. You'll then need to make the call as to how to fix it - either by shutting down the process, killing it, or changing the port that your Server Admin configuration listens to:

Today I was checking alert log of Oracle 10.2.0.2 instance and I noticed that after database startup archiver is stopped. That's what is written in alert log.

MihaParameter log_archive_max_processes was set to 2. So two archival processes
were started at database startup. One was shut down because it was not needed.
That was the reason for the followin messages in alert log:

I shutdown my database with the shutdown abort;
afterwards i was not able to change the ARCHIVELOG mode of the databse
it shows like:

Hello:
I'm performing a shutdown of my database on my laptop.
In Database Control, I'm sitting on the Startup/Shutdown: Activity Information screen. The screen shows:
The database is currently being shutdown, this operation may take some time. Once this operation is complete you can press Refresh and be returned to Database Control.
My question is approximately how much time does a shutdown take? I've been sitting at this screen for two hours.
I didn't think it would take this long. The database was just installed.
I'm running Oracle 10g and Windows XP.
Can someone help?

I checked my alert log. The last entry I have is the following:
