URGENT - Terminal Command to replace Global Prefs?

Hi folks, I was reading how to repair Entourage with the continuous EXEC_BAD error I'm getting and followed this advice on mac osx .com http://macosx.com/tech-support/mac/entourage-excbadaccess-error/27991.html where it says to :
*6) Type the following command (for all of the following, copy and paste):*
*cd ~/Library/Preferences/*
*7) Type this command:*
*rm .GlobalPreferences.plist*
*8) Type this command:*
*sudo cp /Users/NewUser/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist .*
The problem is when you do this, instead of copying the file, Terminal wants you to choose options I don't understand:
*cp /Users/Temp/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist*
Password:
*usage: cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-fi | -n] [-pvX] source_file target_file*
*cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-fi | -n] [-pvX] source_file ... target_directory*
I now have no global prefs for my main acct and am concerned if I shutdown, I'll lose something important... How can I complete the copy of the clean prefs to my user acct now?
TIA!!!!!
Jeff

my guess is you didn't quite follow all the steps in the instructions. did you type the dot at the end of the command line? you have to.
anyway those instructions seem way too excessive. if your global preferences file is corrupt, all you need to do is delete it an log out/in. that file will be recreated with default contents. this will achieve quite the same purpose as the hint in that link.
As you've already deleted it in step 7 just log out/in and see what happens.
I can not promise that any of this will help but it will achieve what this hint is trying to do.

  • The majority of Terminal command, "not found"

When I was trying to mess around with my Kinect camera on my iMac today, via Terminal, I noticed a peculiar thing occurring when I tried to use even the most basic of Terminal commands.
For example, I typed in "ls" to try to list the directories and files of my current directory, but was presented with the following instead:
    "-bash: ls: command not found"
    Without the quotes obviously.
Why is this happening? Should I be concerned?

    Is there any reason why I don't have a ".profile saved.profile" or a ".bash_profile saved.bash_profile"?
    It just displays:
    "No such file or directory".
Ouch! By default there are no shell initialization files. I was assuming that the MySQL installation created either a .profile or a .bash_profile, or the instructions had you manually creating one of them.
If you do not have a .profile nor a .bash_profile, then I'm not sure where the MySQL installation put them.
But just to be on the safe side and make sure we are looking in the correct directory try:
echo $HOME # just want to make $HOME variable is properly setup.
    /bin/ls -l $HOME/.profile $HOME/.bash_profile $HOME/.bash_login $HOME/.bashrc
I apologize if I missed some of your explanations, I don't mean to be fussy!
Your Terminal sessions are not working. I would be more than "fussy" if that happened to me! Then again, I live inside of terminal sessions
xurizaemon had an earlier post where he listed some additional places that PATH could be modified.
    /bin/cat /etc/profile
    /bin/ls -R /etc/paths.d
You might go back and re-read what xurizaemon wrote in that post.
Another thing you could try is, using System Preferences -> Accounts, create a new account, and see if that account has the same Terminal problem (this is an experiment, not a solution). If it does, then it would seem the changes were global, so the /etc/profile, and /etc/paths.d locations are candidates. If the problem does NOT occur for a new account, then this would point to $HOME/.profile, $HOME/.bash_profile, $HOME/.bash_login.

  • Can I spin down my internal disk? Open Firmware or terminal commands?

    Hello all,
I have not been around here for a while, but I desperately need your help.
Does anyone know how I can spin down my internal disk?
Possibly with the terminal or Open Firmware?
Does anyone know all the Open Firmware commands or
where a list can be found so that I can explore the situation myself?
Here is some more detail of what I want to do and why.
My internal disk crashed a while ago.
(My bag slid off my shoulder and the machine hit the brick sidewalk below right on its' corner:>(
I have since been running off my little pocket-size fire-wire disk.
Today the internal disk finally really bit the dust and the bearings are making quite a noise.
(If I tip the PB while it is running the noise turns into a whine of varying pitch and loudness.
It sounds like my poor PB is crying in pain. LOL)
I want to get the internal disk to spin down until I can afford a new one and I have the time to replace it.
    Any ideas?
I know I could open up the case and pull the plug on it,
but maybe there is something better and easier.
Can anyone guide me in any possible terminal commands to eject it or
give some insight into firmware commands that may help?
I know the firmware can spin the disk down. - It does so for power management.
Also, one time when I booted, the disk gave the boot process such a bad error that
the boot process asked me what to do. I told it to eject the disk - then the disk spun down
and the machine booted normally off the FW disk.
So, maybe there is an Open Firmware command I could use to permanently shut the thing off.
I cannot use the Disk Utility to unmount or eject it.
In Disk Utility, sometimes the disk is already unmounted and grayed out.
So therefor the unmount and eject commands are also greyed out.
At other times the disk does not even show up in Disk Utility.
    Thanks, Bob

    Thanks for the fast response.
Although your suggestion did not do the trick, it jogged my old mind into
finding a solution that does work. Or seems to work for right now.
The 'drutil' is a command for CD-R/RW media, so it could not see or act on my internal hard drive.
Your suggestion to use a disk utility command sent me off to find a command for other devices and
    I remembered the 'diskutil' command.
I did a 'diskutil list' and after a good wait for the failed disk to allow completion,
I was given a list that showed what device the internal disk was (/dev/disk2).
I then did a 'diskutil eject /dev/disk2' and after a similar wait, the disk was ejected and it spun down.
It was a pleasant surprise since the drive is not ejectable and since the OsX Disk Utility could not eject it.
There are things (running the disk utility) that do seem to wake up the disk occasionally,
but all I have to do is issue the command again.
    Thanks
p.s. Perhaps I was not clear in my original question that
I wanted to spin down my internal ide hard disk - sorry if that was a confusion.
p.p.s. It is also very interesting that I called Apple support and
they could not give me this simple solution.

  • Terminal command to disable "You have forced ****to quit"?

It happens often enough to be a pain. I have gone to Console prefs and selected "Automatically send diagnostic and usage data to Apple"
I still get the dialog box with the choice to Ignore or Report.
Is there a terminal command that would rid me of having to make that choice, as I always choose "Ignore"?

I did change My Settings. Thanks. Something I didn't think of. The force quits are from Mail, Aperture, and Safari. They're not frequent, and a force quit fixes the problem, but I'd like to avoid the dialog.

  • Understanding a Create Folder Terminal Command

    Good morning Apple users,
An ex-colleague of ours created a Terminal command for our workplace that generates multiple blank folders for work documentation to be saved into per the "job number/folder number". i.e Job Number 17813 would go into the folder of the same number.
For obvious reasons we would prefer to avoid having to manually generate such folders.
He left the script with us but we are having trouble understanding it's use to generate new folders with the same structure. I'm hoping someone could break it down for me and help me understand how it works?
I've attached the script as it's written for you to dissect.
The above is the script within Text/Edit. When opening the file and attempting to do the requested "Please enter the thousands part of the SRO range: " in multiple combinations from "18000" to "18000 - 18999" and simply "18" it responds with the following message, Attached below:
I'm sure our issue is something minor and we are just missing some tiny detail. Your assistance in getting this working is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

I haven't run your script, but the relevant part seems to be the error message:
OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/Volumes/OSX Raid/Service/Service Documentation/'
To me, this says that the target parent directory doesn't exist, and is likely failing on the line:
    os.chdir(path)
since you can't change to a non-existent directory. The rest of the script is irrelevant at this point.
So you need to look at why this command might fail. The most obvious problem would be that it doesn't exist - maybe the volume isn't mounted, or the path doesn't match _exactly_. My python is rusty, but the spaces in the path may also be a problem (most shell commands barf at spaces in path names) - you might want to identify the path as a 'raw' string:
    path = r'/Volumes/OSX Raid/Service/Service Documentation/'
    (note the leading 'r')

  • Remove read receipt terminal command

Several months ago I was having issues with delivery of email.  One of my troubleshooting solutions was to implement a read receipt code in terminal to determine which emails were going through and which were not.  I have since "fixed the glitch" and want to remove or reverse the terminal command but I have no idea how to do it.
This is the terminal command I used:
    defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Return-Receipt-To" = "[email protected]"; "Disposition-Notification-To" = "[email protected]"; }'
Does anyone know how to remove a terminal command, disable it, or reverse the function?
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks!!!

Quit Mail, then in Terminal type:
    defaults read com.apple.mail UserHeaders
to check that the value of UserHeaders is what you expect. If there are additional UserHeaders beyond the ones you want to delete you'll need to add them back later. Now type:
    defaults delete com.apple.mail UserHeaders
All of your UserHeaders will be gone. If you need to add back some headers use:
    defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"foo" = "bar";}'
Obviously you need to replace foo and bar with your values.

  • Terminal command for tabs to open in same window

anyone know the terminal command to have all links open in tabs instead of a new window - why does mac call it tabs when it does not even actually work - any help would be great - i had the command and i deleted it......driving me nuts

    Greetings,
There is no such command; there is a command to force targeted links to open in new tabs, but it will have no effect on links that are controlled by JavaScript. Open Terminal and enter:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClickCreateTabs -bool true
press Enter or Return, then quit Terminal and restart Safari.

  • How can I change the "Ask to join new networks" option using a terminal command?

We are currently switching to a new wireless network throughout our school district and I have pushed commands to connect to the new and remove the old. However, any Macs that have "Ask to join new networks" enabled are jumping over to our unsecure guest network, even if that network has been removed from the list of Preferred Networks. So far the fix has been to remove the guest network from the list of Preferred Networks and then disable Ask to join. The only issue I'm running into now is I have been unable to find a terminal command to change this setting. Once I have the command I can write a script and send that out to all of the Macs.
So is there a way to disable "Ask to join new networks" using command line?

  • What are the terminal commands to list all plugins, extensions, etc?

I remember a while ago reading a thread on diagnosing kernel panics and such, where someone listed a number of commands (I think there were four separate terminal commands) which produced lists of plugins, daemons, background enhancers, extensions etc which could sap resources or drive up temperature without necessarily showing up in activity monitor or anything like that.
Anyone know what these commands are? I'm having some serious overheating problems at the moment when doing nothing but for instance watching a youtube video with no other processes running so I'd like to get these dumps and see if there's anything installed which could be causing trouble.

How do I back up the music and apps etc. I restored my computer and I reinstalled iTunes, I was told something about a terminal command line, what does that mean? Please help

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer any other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup. The restore will also update the iOS.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music

  • How to reset the network IP address from terminal/command line in Mac OSX?

Do anyone knows how to set the network IP address from terminal/command line in Mac OS X?

how about a GUI, ever heard of a GUI? it's this really neat thing, where you don't have to worry about remembering long strings of text to do something. Mac OS X actually has a rather decent one (that was sarcasm by the way, Mac is the best) you could have it done in like 30 sec, if you use the network pane of system preferences.

Can't seem to sync my phone with iCal because I get a message that says:No writable calendar. I tried the suggestions I found in Help including a Terminal command to no avail.

I can only suggest you now need to somehow link your mobile to sync with the new calendar 'On my Mac'.
I have a work Blackberry whose calendar I sync with an iCal calendar 'On my Mac' using a usb lead and the Blackberry Desktop Manager for Mac. This free piece of software from Blackberry, automatically starts up as soon as I connect the usb to the iMac and it then prompts me to select which calendar 'On the iMac', which is writable, that I want my Blackberry to sync to.

  • Terminal command to refresh USB peripheral device

I'm running OS 10.7.5, and I have a recurring problem with the USB ports on my Mac mini.  After several days of up-time, one or more of the ports will sometimes become non-responsive.  This seems to be software related, because logging off and logging back into the machine always fixes the problem (as does a restart and a cold-reboot).  I was thinking maybe the "checklist" of device filenames somehow gets corrupted over time, and needs to be recreated.
Does anyone know how to refresh the list of peripheral devices without restarting, rebooting, or logging off?  Ideally a terminal command?  I'm hoping not to have to keep shutting down the session each time this happens to get my list of connected devices back.
Thanks very much for your suggestions for the newbie.

    Hi Korby,
If you are having difficulties with USB devices such as you describe, I would suggest resetting your Mac mini’s parameter RAM, as described in this article -
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Specifically -
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
