Url question in iweb

I originally set up my site for mobileme and now cant seem to get the url name that I want. The site appears in the browser location as:
http://pletchworth.com/pletchworth/Paul_Letchworth.html/
Seems a little unecessary to have so many names!!
Is there any way I can set this up to be only :
http://www.pletchworth.com
Many thanks

This is because iWeb places each of its sites in a folder with the site name, in this case 'pletchworth'. If it didn't do this, chaos would result when you added a second site. You can't really tamper with it, because it's designed to work this way and it's not congfigurable. If you start messing with the folder structure manually after publication you will cause problems.
One trick you could do would be to use a framing index page at root level instead of the current redirection one. This would result in just the domain name remaining in the address bar as you navigate the site, but it makes it impossible for visitors to bookmark individual pages. It also has the unwanted result of making any other sites you link to appear also with your domain name in the address bar, unless you specify that the links open in a new window in the pane for creating a hyperlink.
The method for doing this is as follows. Paste the following code into TextEdit in PLAIN TEXT mode (not Rich Text which is often the default):
<html>
<head><title>PAUL LETCHWORTH</title></head>
<frameset cols="100%,*" border="0">
<frame src="http://www.pletchworth.com/pletchworth/Paul_Letchworth.html">
</frameset>
</html>
Save it as index.html - TextEdit will offer to use .txt instead, don't let it. When you've published your site, upload this file to the root level of your server to replace the existing index.html file. You will need to do this after every time you re-publish your site as iWeb will overwrite your index.html file.

  • 2 more questions for IWEB

    Hi Everyone,
    I have published my site and it's working fine.
    It was so easy!
    Now...as you know the address begins with http://web.mac.com.
    Is there any way to change that so it starts with my name instead?
    I know I can do that if I get hosting soemwhere else...and that I have already.
    I am hoping to switch my hosting to Mac so I can mange my site better.
    question number 2:
    How can I view the HTML code generated by the templetes created in Iweb?
    I was thinking of using the code with another hosting service to see if the results were the same.
    Thanks so much in advanced.

    All you have to do is to register your own domain name (which I think you already have if you have hosting somewhere else)....and then set up a feature called "Domain Forwarding" to point to the .Mac hosted iWEb URL.

    If you want to put your iWeb pages onto another server, just do a "Publish to Folder" in iWeb and select a folder on your desktop somewhere. iWeb will then put all the HTML files required for your site in that folder. You can examine the files there or you can upload the files to your server to see the results online.
    The pages should look identical no matter if you are on .Mac or another 3rd party server. The only difference will be in all the .Mac only features like the slideshow, counters, search, comments, etc. These will not function on a 3rd party non-.Mac server

  • Iweb url question

    Hello everyone,
    I am wondering if it's possible to create my own unique url name for my iweb site. I'm thinking of using godaddy.com or yahoo.com's domain hosting services to host my site for 2.99 a year, so that I could create my own domain name. Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Well, lessee, this all depends on how you want to do this.
    Are you already hosting your iWeb site on you .Mac account? If you are hosting your site of your .mac account the URL will probably look something like:
    "http://web.mac.com/<your.macnamehere>/iWeb/"
    All then you would need to do is to go to Godaddy.com and register a domain name (www.yourdomainname.com) and have godaddy.com forward that domain name to your .mac site.
    Once all this is set up, anyone visiting your site could go about it in 2 ways. First, they could just open a web browser and enter "http://web.mac.com/<your.macnamehere>/iWeb/" and get to your site.
    OR, they could enter the site name you registered (www.yourdomainname.com) and it would immediately forward the browser to "http://web.mac.com/<your.macnamehere>/iWeb/". For the rest of the time that person is browsing your site, all the URLs would look like your .mac url. This sounds to me like what you're asking for.
    Now, if you want to have your site fully hosted on "www.yourdomainname.com" without the URL changing to "http://web.mac.com/<your.macnamehere>/iWeb/" once you start browsing the site, then that's a whole different set of instructions, cause then you'd need to buy hosting space and manually upload your site to that server instead of just using iWeb's built in "publish to .mac" function.

  • QUESTION: URL limitations with iWeb?

    can you create a personal url such as www.yourname.com

    Yes, you can, Scott. But not through iWeb or .mac. You need to go to a Domain Registrar like http://www.godaddy.com who will help you find your unique domain name and register it so that no one else can use it. This kind of service usually costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 to $15 a year to maintain.
    Once you have your domain name, like http://www.scottmagri.com , then you can set up something called Domain Forwarding (check with your registrar to make sure this is available...sometimes at additional cost...but included with GoDaddy). What Domain Forwarding does is to let anyone who types in http://www.scottmagri.com to be automatically forwarded to whatever other URL you want...like your .Mac iWeb URL.
    This should be pretty easy to set up and is the easiest way to get a URL that you can remember and share with your friends and family.

  • Personal Domain URL & Publishing via iWeb

    I don't have any problems with setting up a personal domain. (In fact, it was quite easy!) My question and issue is this: when I publish to my personal domain, iWeb wants to put the site I created into a subfolder of the root domain. For exmaple:
    I want: www.ourlifetogether.com/
    Instead, I get: www.ourlifetogether.com/ourlifetogether.com/home.html
    I figured out it gets the subfolder "/ourlifetogether.com/..." name from the site name in iWeb. I have since changed it to "site" so that the URL, after someone types www.ourlifetogether.com is forwarded to www.ourlifetogether.com/site/home.html
    Is there a way I can have it simply remove the redirect? I would rather be displayed as "www.ourlifetogether.com" and leave it at that. (I would even accept ".../home.html".) Any ideas?
    Could it be because my initial page is named "home" rather than "index"? I dunno...

    I am not sure what you mean by your "telltail sign". You are correct, iWeb is different and, being new to iWeb, I am attemping to learn these differences and hence why I posted this question initially. I was able to determine; however, that either iWeb and/or the "Publish to MobileMe" function does, indeed, create a index.html file, in the root directory with a META REFRESH in the <HEAD> section of the HTML. Using the open source WGET tool, I was able to grab this file. The contents of that file is below:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <title>
    </title>
    <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url= site/home.html" />
    </head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
    Note the <meta http-equiv="refresh" ... url= site/home.html" /> line. This is the "META REFRESH tag I was assumed was happening and apparently...it is. Given that this is something that iWeb and/or MobileMe does without the user knowing about it, I assume that there is nothing that can be done to prevent it.
    I am in the process of using WebDAV to move my files from the /site/ subfolder to the / root directory and remove this index.html file. (Actually, I will also likely want to rename my home.html file to index.html.) This is just an academic thing for me at this point because this is not a viable long-term solution. I simply want to publish and forget...and not have to have unpleasant looking URLs.

  • Techie Question about iWeb, outbound links, and Google Analytics

    Hi,
    I have a kind of pretty technical question about using Google Analytics (GA) with iWeb sites to measure clicks on outbound links. Here's the setup:
    1) My website's online, and GA is working properly.
    2) I don't sell stuff directly, but I do have a "Purchase" page which contains a link to a specific Amazon page.
    3) I'm pretty sure I can measure how many people go to the Purchase page using GA, but how do I measure whether visitors click on the Amazon link? It would be interesting to me to be able to gauge what the conversion rate is; that is, how many people actually proceed to purchase the product at Amazon.
    I've checked the GA instructions and there's a page about manually tracking clicks on outbound links but it requires some code inputting. I know zero about coding, but I'm pretty sure that in iWeb you can't get access to the source code to input the required code.
    Am I wrong about this? And if I am, then does anyone here know how to measure the clickthrough rate?
    Anyway, hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

    I don't know about the link tracking but you could have the link take you to a redirect page which automatically sends them to Amazon.com after a preset time, 0 seconds to whatever you'd like. You can put a counter on that redirect page, like StatCounter. StatCounter can tell you how many, from where they came, i.e country and area, repeat visits, etc.
    Tutorials #12 & #13 describe how to put a visible counter on a page but with a redirect page you wouldn't have to bother since it wouldn't be seen. You can get all of your information from your account on the StatCounter site.
    The redirect page would be a simple plain text page titled redirect.html and would look like this:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="refresh"
    content="0; Destination URL">
    <title>Redirecting or whatever you'd like to appear at the top of the browser</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
    0 Is the number of seconds to wait before redirecting the visitor. If set to zero the visitor would not know they were being redirected. Replace Destination URL with the Amazon URL you want them to go to.

  • URL questions

    Hello,
    I recently set up a domain name with GoDaddy, and I have my site hosted on MobileMe. I have a couple of questions:
    1. when I type in www.(sitename).com it goes to my site. but when i type (sitename).com it goes to the GoDaddy.com placeholder page. I've edited the www CNAME to web.me.com and from what I have already read, I'm only allowed one www CNAME. How can I make both options work?
    2. My current URL is www.(sitename).com/(name of site in iWeb)/pagename.html
    I would like the junk in the middle gone. I'm not concerned with google searching...those wishing to visit my site will visit because they are directed there for a very specific reason, not because of widespread notoriety. I don't mind www.(sitename).com/home.html either.
    Can someone help? Thanks!

    1. It is correct that you can only use CNAME once, but this is generally for one domain name. Basically, your domain name is actually domainname.com with the www.domainname.com being a sub domain of domainname.com. What you need to do is go back to GoDaddy and go to the DNS settings and if you set the CNAME for www.domainname.com, you need to create a new CNAME there and just enter domainname.com without the www - so that will be the alias with the host being exactly the same as before - web.me.com. You are still only using one CNAME, as it is still only relating to one domain name.
    The only being able to use CNAME once for every MobileMe account relates to the number of sites with domain names attached to them, so if you have two site in iWeb, published under one MME account, you can enter your domain name for one site and then set up CNAME forwarding, but if you want to publish your second site using a domain name, you would have to forward this using ordinary masked web forwarding.
    2. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about this unless you change your method of forwarding your domain name from CNAME to ordinary masked web forwarding.
    If you publish to MME and use CNAME, then the way in which iWeb publishes to your MME/iDisk is domainname.com/sitename/pagename.
    If you want anything different, then you need to remove CNAME or use masked web forwarding instead, so that your domain will be forwarded to web.me.com/username/sitename and then your url will be http://yourdomain.com. There will then be no site name or page name displayed after your domain name, but visitors to your site cannot bookmark individual pages of your site if you do it this way. They have to bookmark the whole site instead.
    Your only other option here is that you purchase a web hosting package from GoDaddy and upload your site directly to the GoDaddy servers. You can publish to a folder and upload using Cyberduck and with this, you can upload the contents of your site folder rather than the whole folder itself and so your url will then be http://yourdomain.com/pagename.

  • IWeb 1.1.1 download PLUS: Question about iWeb 2.0 templates

    I read the notice up there that iWeb 1.1.1 has been released to address certain issues. I went to:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/iweb111.html

    I am going to buy iWeb 2.0 when it is available. However, is there any news about what kind of TEMPLATES 2.0 will have? Will 3rd party templates bought prior to 2.0 function in iWeb 2.0?

  • Hyperlink URL for an iweb page for press release

    I am writing a press release in Word and I want to create a hyperlink in Word directly to the third page on my iweb site which is http://web.mac.com/decouvrir/mamaloosemusic/Welcome.html. But that adress is for the welcome page. But I want to get directly to another page.
    The other page name on my navigation bar is Mamaloose, but the internal title in my iweb list is "mamaloosecorpinfo". What should the resulting URL be in order to go directly to that page?

    Okay, firstly you need to sort out your site name. Is this your site here? http://web.me.com/decouvrir.
    Your url link does not work, so there is something wrong somewhere. Go into iWeb and check your site name and perhaps re-publish. Also, you need to be using web.me.com and not web.mac.com as you have.
    Also, if you are linking from a Word document, it is not the navigation menu that you need to link to, it is the page name from the url and you need to link to in iWeb - so it does not matter what your navigation link is, if you named your page "mamaloosecorpinfo", then your page will be this that followed by .html and it is this that you need to link to, to take you to that page of your website.

  • Short url options for iweb '08 & godaddy HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!!

    I have a new website up. I used iweb 08 and Godaddy. I just want the name only. I want this to show up ---->Example www.sitename.com and the then according pages to follow. Example www.sitename.com/media, www.sitename.com/store, www.sitename.com/shirts, etc. Is there any possible way to make my site have the short url without to much complication? I have searched high and low and most iweb users have the long url. Is this worth the time to figure out. I dont really care about RSS or anything like that. Any answers will be greatly appreciated!!!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you only want the domain name to show up then you'll have to use the URL domain name forwarding with masking. This is how I setup my tutorial site, toadstutorials.info, with GoDaddy:
    Click to view full size
    If you set up the domain name forwarding using CNAME you'll have to remove that type of forwarding and redo it with the standard URL forwarding. Here are some pages on the subject that will be of some help:

    In your particular case (where you're using the JDBC/ODBC bridge), the java pieces don't have any knowledge about how your real driver (the ODBC driver) connects to the database. Java doesn't know if there is a file-based DB (like MS Access or Paradox) or a Server database (such as SQL Server) behind the bridge. What java (or the bridge) DOES know is how to 'talk ODBC'. Even then, the BRIDGE doesn't know all the settings for the ODBC driver (only the driver itself knows, because it pulls it from the DSN configuration).
    You might be able to tweak the connection by using the Properties object that you pass along, as the bridge may pass these to the ODBC driver and you might be able to override the DSN settings.

  • ACE 4710 http probe get url question

    I am trying to create a http probe using the request method get url command. My url contains a question mark and the ACE will not accept the url as is and it strips out the question mark character. Is there a way to make the ace accept a url containg a question mark?
    probe http HTTP_PROBE
      port 9040
      interval 10
      faildetect 5
      passdetect interval 60
      expect status 200 200
      open 1
    The url I am trying to enter is /psp/epprod/?cmd=login
    When I enter it the ACE does as shown below
    (config-probe-http)# request method get url /psp/epprod/?
    <LINE>
    ACE-APP-02/vc_peoplesoft(config-probe-http)# request method get url /psp/epprod/cmd=login
    It strips out the ? character.

    Hi Nicholas,
    To enter a question mark you need to type ctrl+v prior to entering the ?
    You enter the control key then lowercase v, then your question mark.

  • Why is default URL created by iWeb Case Sensitive

    I have posted a new website using iweb and it will only load if I use "Site" in the URL. If I type "site" Apple reports that no Website is available. Try it.
    http://web.mac.com/alan.fozzard/Site/Welcome.html
    http://web.mac.com/alan.fozzard/site/Welcome.html

    it will only load if I use "Site" in the URL
    No problem for me with just the short version, and that is how it should work for you too:
    http://web.mac.com/alan.fozzard
    Urls that include a file path are almost always case sensitive. Best get used to it.
