USB 2.0 Hub Does it have to be MacOS X compatible?

Hi!
Like the subject title say, I want to buy a USB Hub, and I'm wondering if the Hub have to be MacOS X compatible, or the Hub just going to be compatible with the USB 2.0 chain anyway, because it is USB 2.0?
Since some Hub are cheaper than others, from $15 to $40, and even more, is it necessary to be MacOS X compatible?
Thanks in advance!

Hi!
I've been a supplier of USB hub devices (what's actually inside the hub box), so hopefully I can answer your question.
As a quick answer, any hub with the USB high speed (2.0) logo should work just fine. That's the nature of USB certified products. Everything SHOULD work with everything else. Just be sure that it's USB HIGH SPEED (2.0). Sometimes it isn't as obvious as it should be when a supplier of older stuff is trying to move it through retail. The technical differences between USB1.1 and USB2.0 are night and day. If you buy an older 1.1 device by mistake, if you try and synch your iPod (or some other large volume transfer), it'll take forever.
Having said that, I would consider what you want to use it for. If you're going to run an external hard drive, a lot of different devices, mixing low speed (digital camera/mice/keyboard) with hard drives, etc, then pay a little more for a brand like Belkin. An iPod qualifies for a hard drive.
If you're only using it occasionaly, and using only simple devices like keyboard/mouse, then go with a cheap house brand (making sure it's 2.0!)
Hope this has been helpful!

  • USB hub does not work!  Help

I was attempting to install a KVM switch for my G4 and G5 that required me attaching my keyboard and mouse to the usb port on the back of the monitor.
The USB hub does not work! Monitor cable has no bent pins, and works perfectly for video with all my Mac's, G4's, G5's. The problem is I have had this monitor awhile and never tried these ports so apple won't help.
Anyone have any suggestions why these ports don't work and if there is a fix?
Can any one recommend a KVM switch that supports ADC, and USB so I bypass this hub.
    Thanks

Some USB 2.0 hardware works very well w/USB 3.0 & some don't.  Suggest that you contact the sound card manufacturer & ask them.  Perhaps they can recommend a work-a-round.
Another user posted about the same problem some weeks ago regarding a sound card.

  • USB 3.0 Hub attached to a Mac Mini does not work

I have already 2 USB 2.0 hubs attached and work perfectly. I want to add a 3.0 USB powered hub but it does not work. The USB is a Iogear 3.0 USB Hub.

Does any USB thing show up?
    Of not...
    USB reset...
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • USB Hub does not work on boot up, but OK after dis/reconnecting

I just set up a D-Link USB 7-Port 2.0 Hub. I use a Mac G5 2.7Ghz which has USB 2.0. I've got the hub connected to one of the USB ports on the rear of the G5. Connected to the hub are my keyboard (Apple's older black and grey model), trackball, iPod dock, printer, Steinberg Key, iLok and Logic Key. Both the dock and keyboard have USB extension cables. When I boot up, my track mouse, keyboard, Logic key etc., do not respond until I unplug the main USB connection to the Hub and then reconnect it, and sometimes, I must do this for each device -- for example, when I boot up Logic, it doesn't find the key until I reconnect the hub. I have updated all drivers for the devices connected -- Trackball, keys, iLok, Printer etc. Might the USB extension cables affect the Hub? Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

yes that is the case, the modules that I need are blacklisted. Some how it did not occur to me to check.
    Thanks
    ls -1 /etc/modprobe.d/ returns:

[Edit] just rebooted and everything works now without having to modprobe. also I should probably add that I did the installation with archboot, I saw this mentioned somewhere.

  • How can I do live streaming with a Mac Book Pro 2011, using a new model of Sony HD camcorder which does not have firewire out/input? it comes only with a component video output, USB, HDMI and composite RCA output?

I need to do live streaming with a Mac Book Pro 2011, using a new model of Sony HD camcorder (http://store.sony.co...ber=HDRAX2000/H) ..this camcorder model does not have firewire out/input ..it comes only with a component video output, USB, HDMI and composite A/V video output..
I wonder how can I plug this camcorder to the firewire port of my laptop? Browsing on internet I found that Grass Valley Company produces this converter http://www.amazon.co...=A17MC6HOH9AVE6 ..but I am not sure -not even after checking the amazon reviews- if this device will send the video signal through firewire to my laptop, in order to live streaming properly? ..anyone in this forum could help me please?
    Thanx

I can't broadcast with the built in iSight webcam... how would I zoom in or zoom out? or how would I pan? I've seem people doing it walking with their laptops but that's not an option for me... there's nothing wrong with my USB ports but that's neither an option to stream video because as far as I know through USB you can't connect video in apple operating systems ..you can for sure plug any video cam or photo camera through usb but as a drive to transfer data not as a live video camera...  is by firewire an old interface developed by apple that you can connect all sorts of cameras to apple computers... unfortunately my new sony HDR-AX2000 camcorder doesn't have firewire output...

  • External video projector - How can I hook up my Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter onto my new MacBookAir if the machine does not have a mini port (but only 2 USBs and 1 Thunderbolt)?

    Hi
How can I hook up my DVI Adapter onto my new MacBookAir if the machine does not have a mini port (but only 2 USBs and 1 Thunderbolt)?
Is there a DVI adaptor already for Thunderbolt?
    Thanks,
    JFR

The Mini Display port and Thunderbolt port use compatible connector bodies. Your current Mini Display to DVI or VGA adapter will still work as before on the newer Thunderbolt capable machines.

  • Windows 8 does not have a USB boot option

QuestionHow can I boot my Windows 8 laptop from a USB device? I created a recovery disk on a USB thumb drive.
    So far I have:
Entered into the UEFI (BIOS) and set USB to boot first.
    Disabled secure boot.
I tried to reboot using the general setup options for startup in the windows settings page. I choose boot from USB through the UEFI, but got an error message that system does not have a USB boot option.
To confirm I also created a bootable DVD with an ISO burner, but my laptop cannot detect a DVD boot option either.
I assumed that the firmware of the UEFI for this computer allowed a bootable USB but in practice I cannot seem to get this work.
AnswerTo assist with not being able to boot from a USB device on a Windows 8 laptop, perform the following:
    Plug in USB bootable device.
Hold down F12 when restarting and access UEFI menu (option is below drive list). If system is set to fast boot, CLICK HERE for instructions on entering the UEFI.
Go to UEFI and make USB "1st boot".
    Disable secure boot.
Go to the "Advance" Tab, select "System".
Change boot order from UEFI to CSM.
    Save changes and exit (F10).
Computer will restart and boot from USB drive.
When finished go back into the UEFI and set defaults then save changes and exit (F10). Windows 8 will reboot normally next reboot.

Done that, only choices are "Set up Firefox to Sync" & "Pair a Device". No ''UNLINK THIS DEVICE". Your turn.

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.
PS: Perhaps the computer needs to go into Apple & have a genius
or product specialist at AASP test the unit thoroughly... BlueTooth?

  • Why does my USB 3.0 hub appear as a USB 2.0 Hub?

I have a brand new 2012 iMac running OS X 10.8.2. I purchased a hub that is a USB 3.0 hub, hoping to take advantage of the higher transfer speeds.
I have the following devices plugged into the hub:
    HP Photosmart Printer/Scanner/Fax (a USB 2 device)
HP 2015 Laserjet (also a USB 2 device)
    Neat Mobile scanner (USB 2)
When I plug in a portable hard drive (bus powered 2.5 inch drive) that is in a USB 2.0 case, the drive mounts on my desktop as it should.
When I plug in a portable hard drive that is in a USB 3 case, it fails to mount.
When I plug a hard drive that is USB 3 into the back of the Mac, it shows up as a USB 3 drive.
Is this happening because I have USB 2.0 devices plugged into the hub? What would be a good solution, two hubs (one 2.0 and one 3.0) plugged into the back of my iMac?

Have you tried different ports on the Mac Mini?
    Try a different Cable.
Confirm that the unit is being powered, the ports will only supply 100ma when unpowered.
Have you anything else plugged into the Hub, if so test the items one at a time.
Have you contacted D-Link support for advice?

    Hi Melissa,
    Pretty strange, but...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, does it happen in Safe Mode? Reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

I have an Apple Configurator install that wont recognize an iPad when I attach it via USB.  I cant prepare it or refresh it.  It was supervised.  I get an error message that says "policy does not have correct profile data".   At some point there was a mismatch between the profile on the iPad and the MAC server.  The profile on the MAC server has been deleted and the iPad has been erased and reset to default.  I need to be able to get Configurator to recognize this device to prepare it for deployment and issue Apps to it.   Please help!!

Run the application 'Terminal.app' which you will find in '/Applications/Utilities' on your Macintosh.
Type this into it: defaults delete com.apple.configurator PreprationSavedPolicyDefaultsKey
    Hit the return key.
If you get no error message, it worked, and you can quit the app.

I just bought an ipod touch 4th generation recently, found that it is very difficult to plug and unplug the USB cable from my ipod. Does anyone have this problem?

Some of the Dock connector cables have very small buttons on the rounded adge of the plug, which need to be pushed in to release the plug from the iPod. Look at the picture below, do you notice the "button" on the white connector edge? There's one on the other edge too and they both need to be pressed in to release the "evil looking spike" sticking out of the grey edge.
The shorter plugs (that I've seen) do not have the release mechanism, the plug simply pulls out.

You have to back them up to a computer. You would import them either to iPhoto or to the Photos app in your PC:

  • How many usb ports (if any) does the 30 inch display have?

I am getting the new mac pro I know apple is going to kill the 30 inch display but as they have not done so yet I was wandering how many usb ports does it have?

    Hi macnewcomer22,
Instead of buying the Apple 30" Cinema Display, for not much more you could buy the NEC Multisync 3090WQXi, which incorporates later technology and was awarded Best in Show at MacWorld.
The Apple 30" is a good display, but the technology is about 5 years old, and later models from other manufacturers, noticeably NEC, have surpassed it:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/RecommendedDisplays.html
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/monitors/242010/nec-multisync-lcd3090wqxi
I purchased the standard Multisync version, without the Spectraview II software, in July 2009, and I have found it to be excellent in all respects:
    http://www.nec-display-solutions.co.uk/p/uk/en/products/details/dp/Products/LCD/ Current/LCD-3090WQXi/LCD-3090WQXi.xhtml?e=e1s1
Although most resellers only stock the 3090WQXi in black, it is also available in a silver finish, which looks great alongside a Mac Pro.
    Regards,
    Bill
