USB disk access of every type is hosed - HELP!?

Newbie with the very latest "Don't Panic" running on a laptop.  I'm coming off a year with various bloateddistros, looking for something fast and stable.
I've got my internal drive up, networking, x, gnome and openoffice all working great.  Next step is to plug in my external 160gig drive with all my data on it.  This is a very standard USB2-to-EIDE drive, I've had no problems with it in any distro.  It's split between a 32gig FAT32 partition and a 119gig Ext3.
I followed the wiki on autofs.  Nothing.  Then played with HAL and the like.  Made my user a member of group "storage".  Still nothing.
I've seen mount problems before of course, so I tried adding gparted via pacman and running that from a root command line just to see what's physically out there.  Not good: gparted never finishes getting past the "Scanning all devices....." process with the blue bar bouncing back and forth.  When gparted first starts I can hear the external disk spin up and chug for a few seconds, but then nothing.
I tried a 1gig USB flash critter (probably Fat32), nothing there either.  I think something is fundamentally hosed in my USB disk support.  I do have a USB external trackball working though...so my ports are up.
My daemons at present:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond ntpd hal cups gdm alunnd)
Heeeelp!  Neeeed my daaaata!
Wait, something else weird: if I turn on the external disk I see some CPU activity on my gnome panel monitor.  Nothing major, a few light spikes.  I've got a Celeron 1.6 but with the new 533 memory bus and 2gigs RAM.  Once I run gparted it goes bananas and then once I close gparted CPU activity is pegged hard at 100% - yet there's no listed process eating that.  Then when I turn off the external drive, CPU activity falls back to normal.
WTF, over?
Jim

Well before reading Veek's post I got further along.  Almost there I think.
I went and loaded XFCE4 plus extras, and logged in with a XFCE session.  I like having a backup desktop environment anyways in case Gnome gets squirrelly.
In XFCE Thunar shows the disks, but when I try and access 'em I get:
Failed to mount "128G Volume".
(exo-mount:4613): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
    Using the fallback 'C' locale.
You are not privileged to mount the volume "128G Volume".
What I can't figure out is, what permissions?  I'm added to groups "storage" and "disks"...any more needed?
The output from fdisk -l:
bash-3.2$ fdisk -l

I'm going to jump back to Gnome and try Veek's concepts...

  • USB Disk access "Extremely" Slow

I am unable to use my network disk essentially because the disk access write/read times are SO SLOW...I am better off running backups by connecting my disk directly to the compter. Does anyone else have this problem?
It took 5 Minutes to read my Music directory; connected directly via the same cable it takes seconds.
    What gives?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I got my AE and Seagate FreeAgent Pro hard drive
yesturday and I have the exact same problem.
If I hook up the drive to the computer directly it is
    very very fast.
If I hook it up to the AE it takes about 2 hours to
move a couple fils totaling 2 gigs over ETHERNET!
If I transfer the same files over the same network
between 2 computers the speed is much much faster.
Is this normal or some nasty firmware bug. It almost
feels like the AE is using USB 1.0 for some reason.
You guys are funny. How about checking out the specs of USB 2.0 and 802.11g/n?
    Go here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11g#802.11g
    and here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_2.0
Firewire vs. USB tests are here:
    http://www.g4tv.com/techtvvault/features/39129/USB20_Versus_FireWirepg3.html
    802.11g:
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max) Range (Indoor)
    June 2003 2.4 GHz 19 Mbit/s 54 Mbit/s ~35 meters
    802.11n:
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max) Range (Indoor)
    Mid 2008 5 GHz and/or 2.4 GHz 74 Mbit/s 248 Mbit/s (2 stream) ~70 meters
Bottom line: 802.11n typical is 74Mbps, 802.11g typical is 19Mbps. USB 2.0 typical is 50Mbps.
On the average, you should expect your speed to drop by over 50% when connecting the USB drive to AESB using an 802.11g device. If your device is 802.11n, then you should have pretty much similar performance.
Now, if you increase the distance from your base station, or you put walls in between, the performance of 802.11g will go down "dramatically", all the way to 2-3Mbps, easy. Not so for 802.11n, which behaves much better at longer distances.

  • Airport USB Disk - access from PC?

I have set up my USB disk in my Airport utility, trying all three options (accounts, disk password, and device password).  I cannot find it in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer to access it.
    What is the trick?
    Thanks,

There are a number of posts related to accessing AirPort Disks from Windows Vista / 7 PCs. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
    To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name.
From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab.
On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Airport Extreme USB Disk Access

Airport Extreme 5th Generation with a 2TB SATA drive in a powered enclosure attached via USB.
When attaching the drive/enclosure to my 2011 MBP, I can read/write to it without issues.  The drive is formatted as a single NFS+ partition.
When I attach it to the Extreme via USB and then launch the Airport Utility (5.5.3) and click Manual Setup, it times out trying to retrieving the configuration settings.
The Extreme's light is green throughout this process, unless I unplug/replug the router.  When it comes back up the light is flashing yellow and Airport says to connect the drive to a computer to repair it.  Doing so yields the drive works fine.
If I unplug the drive from USB and re-try the Airport utility, I can immediately access the Manual Setup feature, even without rebooting the Extreme.
I've also tried the 'Configure Other' option in Airport and typing the address manually, but that does not work.
Ive read many threads similar to this, but none exactly like it and none with a definitive solution.
Thoughts/suggestions?  Any other information I can provide about setup or what Im seeing?
    Thanks everyone.
    .sal

Assuming that you have in fact set up your AEBS correctly and that AirPort disk is enabled, you should be able to connect to it several ways. The simplest way is to launch the AirPort Disk Utility and tell it to auto-mount the drive whenever you are connected to your AEBS. If you are like me, however, and don't like to have your external hard drive mounted all the time, then you can manually mount it by navigating to "Network" in the Finder, selecting your base station, and clicking the "Connect" button. You should then be presented with a list of the hard drives connected to your AEBS which you can select from and mount.

  • Disk Access

I am wondering about disk access I have a Toshiba 505-890 running Win-7
I notice that I am getting a disk access about every second as per the disk access light
    coming on.
On my Win XP mach I don't get a light unless the computer is doing something for the most part.
     Definitely not accessing every second.
I was wondering if this problem is endemic to win 7 or some Toshiba program I have not removed.?
If I put a clean install of win 7 will I still have this problem???

This program is not giving me much info on what is doing the disk access.
I have attached a pic of what it comes up with.

  • How to access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

How can I access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

...Called it a roaming network.  Wireless mode is create a wireless network. I have checked allow this network to be extended.  Probably need to uncheck that?
Yes, that option should be deselected as it only pertains to when both routers are interconnected by wireless. Since you have a roaming network, they of course, would be interconnected by Ethernet.
The other important settings for a roaming network are:
Each router must have a unique station name. For the AirPort, this would be called its Base Station Name. I believe the default station name for Linksys routers is: linksys
Each router must broadcast a wireless network with an identical Network Name. For the Linksys, Network Name is the same as its SSID.
Each router wireless network must use the same Wireless Security type and password. The Linksys WRT-54G is capable of up to WPA2 Personal. If you have it set to this level of security, the AirPort should be at the same setting.
Make sure that each router is not on the same Radio Channel for the 2.4 GHz radio. In the US, there are basically only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, or 11. Set each so that they don't use the same channel but use of those three choices.

  • Access USB Disk from Win XP connected to Router

    Hello,
My Airport express is plugged into cable modem router and so is a desktop running Win XP.
Another 2 machines Macbook and Winxp laptop can access AE router, internet and the USB disk connected to AE.
I am having trouble accessing the USB disk from desktop which does not have wifi and is hooked directly to cable modem router. I tried assigning a static IP to Airport Express and that didnt help either.
    Any ideas?
    hhol

    Welcome to the discussions!
You posted in the AirPort Extreme forum, but your post indicates that you have an AirPort Express.
If you have an AirPort Express, this device does not support hard drives at the USB port. Only compatible printers are supported.

  • Every time I connect my USB Disk, the airport restarts

I am having problems getting the disk to work with the Airport Extreme. Every time I turn the disk on, it makes the Airport restart and the light turns to amber. Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions?

If you have tried everything else -
and you have the data backed-up.
I'd suggest plugging the USB disk into a Mac and formatting it as HFS.

  • Does every USB-disk contain a full copy

    Hello,
I have a server 2012 on which Windows Server Backup is configured to a pool of 3 USB-disks. Only one disk is connected at a single time. Originally I wanted to create a full backup every night. This seems impossible, the server only creates one full and
    afterwards only incrementals forever?
But I would be fine with just incrementals if I would know for sure, that all three disks contain a full copy on which the incrementals are based later. In a recover scenario every single disk should be enough to recover all files and SQL database if
one or two disks are lost. It shouldn't be necesary that one of the other disks is needed. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Is a single disk in this scenario enough to perform a full recovery? I have googled on this but couldn't find a satisfying
    answer.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Newb question:  How do I access the files on my usb disk?

I'm new to Mac, and have my airport extreme set up with my usb disk conntected, and set for file sharing. But how to I access the files that I already had backed up to my disk? Like pictures and videos and stuff that I want to use on my new Mac. I know it has to be something simple I'm just not doing, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

    StacyW wrote:

in finder, click on the icon of the airdisk under the shared header, wait for the connection to be established (you may need to enter your admin password), then click on the folder representing the external drive connected to your extreme.
that should cause the drive to mount on your desktop after which you can access the files on the drive.

  • Time Capsule doesn't allow to access NTFS external USB Disks

good morning. I've just configured a 2TB Timecapsule, in a wireless network with 2 MACBookPro and 1 windows xp.
A HP HJPro 8500 is connected to TC and is reachable via wireless, thru a Belkin USB port replicator.
two time machine's usb disks are connected thru the same belkin adapter and work fine.
Another two external usb disks, formatted as NTFS, are not visible at all (even if they are, if connected directly to the macs of to the xp.
I've tried to disconnect the TM disks, leaving connected only the two ntfs disks, with no results.
Any idea to solve this issue? i don't expect to have NTFS disks not accessible thru TC.. no manuals mentioned this as a problem..

  • USB disk won't mount on startup (have tried everything)

    Hi!
I'm having big problems getting my USB disk to mount on startup.:(
It used to work perfectly by having 'mount /dev/sdc1 /media/disk' in rc.local (and umount in local.shutdown) but recently it started saying that 'filesystem type must be defined' (or something like that). So I changed the line to 'mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc1 /media/disk' but now I get a message that '/dev/sdc1 does not exist'.
So I decided to get this fixed in fstab once and for all.
I checked the designations of the disks with 'fdisk -l' and noticed that the USB disk would alternate between /dev/sdc, /dev/sde and /dev/sdd quite random on every reboot. In other words I couldn't mount it in fstab by using one of those paths cause I'd get the same problem with '/dev/sdc or -e or -d does not exist'. I figured the sollution must be to mount the disk by using UUID. I checked the uuid's and got the following (as you can see the USB disk is on this reboot registered as '/dev/sde'):
    bash-3.2$ ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
    total 0
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2009-02-07 11:56 6cf5e803-429a-44c3-bcf9-0f007df623f3 -> ../../sda1

I other words the UUID of the disk should be '94911fb3-def7-4440-b6a5-5e09f91b19f6' so I added that to the fstab file, but I still get the same error that the disk doesn't exist. How is this possible? Isn't the UUID supposed to be the same no matter what? When the disk is clearly labeled with this UUID every time I check it why can't it be used in fstab??
Here's my fstab (I've commented out the lines that I've been trying out):
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

    /dev/sda2 / ext3 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sda3 /var reiserfs defaults 0 1
    /dev/sda4 /home ext3 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdb1 /extra ext3 defaults 0 1

    #UUID=94911fb3-def7-4440-b6a5-5e09f91b19f6 /media/disk defaults 0 0
What am I doing wrong here? I've also tried to use different options like 'rw,auto, exec' but it won't work.

It seems I'm able to mount the disk from the terminal by doing '# sudo mount UUID=94911fb3-def7-4440-b6a5-5e09f91b19f6 /media/disk'.
But this only works when I do it manually. Adding 'mount UUID=94911fb3-def7-4440-b6a5-5e09f91b19f6 /media/disk' to rc.local only gives the error that filesystem must be defined and when it's defined I get the error that device is not found.
How can it work manually, but not in fstab or rc.local?

  • Disk utility crashes every time I try to run it. Help!

My Macbook (late 2008 aluminum unibody running Snow Leopard 10.6.8) is having a plethora of problems - Spotlight won't return any results, I can't get any .dmg files to mount, and software updates can't be installed. Many of the solutions I've found involve running Disk Utility, but every time I try to open it, it crashes. Here's the log file I get:

    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • [solved] Automount USB disk on startup?

    Hi!
I've got an external USB disk that's always connected to my computer (it sits in a "slot" in my computer) and I'm having trouble getting it to automount upon startup. I use openbox as WM and pcmanfm as FM. To mount it I have to access the disk through pcmanfm and then it gets mounted perfectly. Since I've set up my computer as a freevo media center it's kinda annoying that the disk doesn't get automounted and I have to drag my a** out of the couch to mount it.
    My fstab looks like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sda2 / ext3 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sda3 /var reiserfs defaults 0 1
    /dev/sda4 /home ext3 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdb1 /extra ext3 defaults 0 1
    I tried to add:
    /dev/sdc1 /media/disk ext3 defaults 0 1
but get a error message during boot that filesystem can't be checked and the entire boot process halts. So I canged it to:
    /dev/sdc1 /media/disk ext3 defaults 0 2
but then the disk didn't get mounted.
How can I get this to work?

    sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /media/disk ext3 defaults 0 0 in rc.local gives this:
Usage: mount -V : print version
mount -h : print this help
    mount : list mounted filesystems
mount -l : idem, including volume labels
So far the informational part. Next the mounting.
The command is `mount [-t fstype] something somewhere'.
Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted.
    mount -a [-t|-O] ... : mount all stuff from /etc/fstab
mount device : mount device at the known place
mount directory : mount known device here
mount -t type dev dir : ordinary mount command
Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts
a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device.
One can also mount an already visible directory tree elsewhere:
    mount --bind olddir newdir
    or move a subtree:
    mount --move olddir newdir
One can change the type of mount containing the directory dir:
    mount --make-shared dir
    mount --make-slave dir
    mount --make-private dir
    mount --make-unbindable dir
One can change the type of all the mounts in a mount subtree
    containing the directory dir:
    mount --make-rshared dir
    mount --make-rslave dir
    mount --make-rprivate dir
    mount --make-runbindable dir
A device can be given by name, say /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom,
or by label, using -L label or by uuid, using -U uuid .
Other options: [-nfFrsvw] [-o options] [-p passwdfd].
For many more details, say man 8 mount .
