Usb disk is unmounted automatically

Hi,
I have attached a 2TB USB disk and set up rsync to make a 'backup' (I know, it is not a backup, merely a copy) to this backup-disk.
But: without any mention in the logs, the disk gets unmounted. I have rebooted the server yesterday evening at 23:00 and I made sure that disk was mounted. This morning at 9:00, the drive is not mounted anymore... Of course this can cause problems, because rsync is scheduled to run every day, and if I make a copy to a directory on the same disk, I'll be out of space very soon.
I have also noticed that when the drive has not been used for a while, that it takes some time for tab completion in bash to work when working on that drive - but I guess that is caused by te disk spinning down in between uses...
Is there something I'm overlooking in my setup or should I script away (in udev I suppose) and check if the drive is mounted before running the rsync?
Drive details: Samsung Story Station 2TB USB / 1 partition (ext4) / mounted by UUID in fstab:
UUID=e3434573-ad6f-4c44-8168-391292ba5ec5 /media/backup ext4 defaults 0 0
The server is a brand spanking new install with up-to-date archlinux x86_64.
Thx!

I've  never had problems with usb disks unmounting spontaneously, so I'm just guessing,  but could it be usb powermanagement?    laptop-mode-tools  does all kinds of powermanagement tuning, so if you have this installed disable it to see if that is the case. The spindown is caused harddisk powermanagement that you can set with  hdparm, but this shouldn't cause unmounting.  To determine if the problem is specific to  that particular usb harddisk, all usb harddisks, or all usb storage see if it happens with a usb pendrive as well, or a different usb harddisk.

  • External USB disk (time machine) won't mount or unmount... can't acces data

I have a recently bought FreeCom external USB drive for backups to Time-Machine.
And just today time machine gave an error “backup failed” and the disk appeared unmounted.
I tried mounting it.. but it wasn’t there. I disconnected it. Restarted the whole computer.
Now, it shows up in Disk Utility sometimes... but the actual volume of the disk is invisible.
Only the option “unmount” is available, but that fails. Neither can I "verify" or "repair" or anything.
I hear it starts up and shuts down, it semi-shows up in disk utility... what can I do to acces it again???
There are some important files on there (besides the backup) that I need.
(This disk has never travelled or fallen/bumped.. it always sits stationairy under my desk.)

Oddly enough, I attempted to post an answer to your question earlier, but it seems to have not been posted.
Have you tried a different cable or a different USB port?
Have you tried the drive on a different Mac?
Does the drive get its power from the USB port, or does it have an independent power supply?
Does the drive have any security features?
Since I am not familiar with this particular drive, I looked it up, and see that there are several models, and I don't know exactly which one you have. So I will be guessing as to what could be wrong.
If the drive gets its power through the USB port and draws too much power, it could be overloading the USB port and the USB port will shut down rather than allow too much power to be drawn. If you shut down the computer, it can "reset" the USB hub so that it will work again. If this is a possibility, you could try a powered USB hub or powering the drive with a independent power supply. Mac USB ports are very picky about anything drawing too much voltage.
It's possible that you have a faulty USB cable, so it would be worth trying a different cable.
It's possible, although I think less likely, that the enclosure itself could be faulty.
If there is a security feature, it may need to be reactivated in order to connect with the drive.
Hopefully the drive and its data are intact. It sounds to me more like a problem connecting with the drive than a problem with the drive itself. The intermittent nature of the problem lead me to suspect a problem with the cable or the USB port, as the connection itself is what seems to be flakey.
    Good luck!

  • Disk image mounts automatically

Since a couple of days I am experiencing a mysterious problem: a disk image  (.dmg) file keeps mounting automatically  under certain circumstances.
    This is what happens:
    - when I reboot my Mac
    or
    - whenever I choose 'Print' in an application and then select a print option or choose a printer from the printer popuplist
the image mounts and the windows displaying the contents shows in the Finder.
The image is a MacUpdate Promo image of 2009. It is read-only and it is stored on a network drive (a USB disk attached to the Airport Extreme). I can unmount the image, and the network drive, no problem. No files in use. But when I choose Print etc , it appears again!
Now, this image has been there for almost a year, and the problem started only two weeks ago, when I searched the disk for a piece of software (which I didn't find, so I never installed anything off the disk image).
    I'm running MacOSX 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 15" (2010).
I am not aware of any preference setting that causes this. The .dmg file is not in the list of login items.
Anyone an idea what's causing this?
    HE

What happens if you rename the dmg?  Does anything complain after that?

  • Airport Extreme with Airport USB Disk issues - Dont give up just yet...

Just a heads up for anyone who is having issues with accessing an Airport disk with the latest firmware.
After calling Apple support as i was convinced my AEBS was faulty, i have since discovered that if and HFS+ disk cannot be varified and repaired successfully in Disk Utility, it would lock up my AEBS totally. My wireless would drop out and nothing would work any longer untill I turned the power off and on again.
I was able to correct the issue with the USB HDD by booting with the Leopard CD and using Disk Utility in Mac OS X setup. Trying the same thing when booting from the Macbook HDD would result in a 'failed to unmount' error.
Before anyone has a fit and trys to return their AEBS with a similar issue i suggest trying the above or another USB HDD. It just might save you the $49 that i paid as a result of being out of the 90 days of support on my AEBS and Macbook.
FYI, contrary to the technical requirements i was sent by the Apple service agent i spoke with, my Airport Disk IS working with 2 partitions. 1 HFS+ and the other a Windows partiton (i cant remember if its FAT32 or NTFS. My HDD is at home)
I have a collegue at work who was having similar issues with a FAT32 USB HDD on his AEBS but we have just discovered that the HFS+ HDD that i used to test my AEBS with, worked fine on his also. We are yet to find out if his HDD is faulty at this stage. Ill keep you all posted on what we find.
SO, at this stage it would be resonable to say that the AEBS doesnt handle corrupted HDD's very well. (IE it totally locks up and the wireless drops out)

That used to be a problem on 7.2.x. Now 7.3.1 can fix some minor disk problems (such as disk not unmounted correctly).
Since I upgraded to 7.3.1, I haven't once taken my USB hard drive out to be repaired on my Mac.

  • Mount usb disk after boot

    Hi,
How can I mount automatically an usb disk after boot?
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Read this fine article and use it to set up a udev rule, to specifically name the device.  (Otherwise you may never know where it pops up in the disk naming scheme.)
Also note -- after reading the article -- there are plenty of examples of rules in /etc/udev/ files that may further help.

  • Once USB disk sleeps, gone for good.

When my Lacie 500 GB USB 2 disk sleeps (and sometimes even when it doesn't), it becomes unavailable to the network. It is plugged into the USB port of the AEBS via a powered Keyspan 2.0 hub.
Most of the time it works fine, mounting automatically on my MacBook and/or manually on my G4 iMac, but sometimes the green light on the hub goes out (sometimes not) and the disk is no longer available. Time interval before this happens is very random, but if the disk is mounted and in use it stays that way with no glitches. It's only when things are inactive that it tends to disappear, though if it has been working it also usually remounts just fine after the MacBook sleeps. I have checked for firmware updates for the Lacie (none) and have all the latest updates on the other hardware (both Macs running 10.4.11).
When it's "gone," it won't show up in Airdisk Utility or the menu or via the Go-->Connect to server menu. Sometimes unplugging the AC power for the hub and re-powering brings it back. If that fails, then unplugging and reconnecting the Lacie's USB cable sometimes works. Last resort, which always works, is power-cycling the drive itself.
When I look in the AEBS logs, it often shows "USB disk unplugged" when the disk has disappeared.
    Any thoughts/advice?
    -dan

No luck, but thanks for a very good diagnostic suggestion.
With the disk plugged directly into the AEBS USB port, it slept and dropped off the network. Plugging it into the hub did not revive it; it took a power-cycle of the drive.
    Are your drives partitioned?

  • Problems with Airport Extreme Firmware 7.6.1. and Time Machine Backups to USB Disks

I found that when I upgraded to Firmware 7.6.1 my Airport Extreme was no longer able to maintain afp server connections to USB disks mounted to the APE. If I power cycled the APE it would work for a while and then fail again. This even applied for connectins on gigabit ethernet, not just wifi. Consequently my Time Machine backups became unusable. Rolling back to 7.6 fixed it, but I permanently fixed this by changing the IPv6 mode from "Automatic" to "Host". No problems since then.

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

  • External USB hard drive unmounts itself.

    Hi all,
I have a 2.5" hard drive connected via USB to my MacBook that keeps unmounting itself. This happens under some (what seems to be) undetermined amount of time, the drive will all of a sudden unmount itself and disappear from the Finder, Disk Utility, et al.
Is there some fix, setting or work around for this? Very annoying. If not, is there a way to re-mount the hard drive without turning it off then on or reconnecting the USB cable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Diego

I have had the same problem trying to use an USB disk as my Time Machine destination. The disk unmounts when the computer is left alone.
Inspecting the logs I discovered that the system requests the disk to unmount and that the backupd allows it. Since it only happens when I am not actively using the computer my guess is that it has to do with the computer trying to fall asleep or at least preserving it.
With time machine, this is a problem before you have made that first backup; subsequent backups are shorter and do not "time out". My solution was to keep the computer awake and, when I forgot that and the computer fell asleep, requesting a new (continuation of the) backup. Unattended about 7GB would be backed up. (There might be a solution if changing the power settings, but I didn't bother.)
Apple might consider not having the backupd allowing unmounts during a backup, or at least before one full backup has been completed.

  • [SOLVED] Mounted USB stick immediately unmounts itself - why?

    Hi all,
I thought I was unable to mount a USB stick, however it does actually mount but then it gets immediately unmounted by something:
    # mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt
    # ls /mnt
    <empty folder>
    # umount /mnt
    umount: /mnt: not mounted
    # mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt && ls /mnt
    <contents of USB stick>
    # ls /mnt
    <empty folder>
Somehow the USB stick is getting automatically *unmounted* almost immediately after I mount it!
I don't have any automounts enabled, so I'm not sure why this would happen.  If I make a different folder (e.g. /root/test) and mount it there then it sticks, it is only the /mnt folder that gets automatically unmounted.
Any idea what's going on?  I've never seen this happen before, and last time I tried this (a week or two ago) it worked fine.

brebs wrote:Use "mount -v" (i.e. "verbose") to get some feedback - it's most likely not being mounted.
Like I said in my first post, if you run "ls" immediately after the mount then you can see the contents of the USB stick, so it's definitely getting mounted, but waiting only a few hundred milliseconds after the mount reveals it has been unmounted again.  What is causing the unmount is unknown.
    brebs wrote:
Immediately after running that mount command, run:
    echo $?
To see the return code. It should be 0.
Yes it is zero, because the mount command succeeds.  "ls" wouldn't be able to list the files on the USB stick if the mount failed.  It is something else that is unmounting the folder mere milliseconds after it is successfully mounted, but I don't know where else to look to find out what it could be.
brebs wrote:Also, mounting to /mnt is very weird - you should be mounting a directory *inside* /mnt.
I am mounting inside /mnt, I just used /mnt as an example to keep things simple.
    Vain wrote:
I made the same “mistake”. Try running “systemctl status mnt.mount” and see which device the output refers to. For me, it still listed the old device name. Hence, when you mount it, systemd tries to find the (old) device—which it can’t—and thus unmounts your device immediately.
I was too lazy/annoyed to find out how to solve this properly. I rebooted my system.
Interesting idea!  Unfortunately I have nothing listed for this particular mount point.  The only *.mount services on my system are the ones that are mounted at boot (e.g. srv.mount for /srv).  I have the "noauto" option against this mount point in fstab (as USB sticks aren't normally attached to my system when I boot) so sensibly enough I don't seem to have a mount service running for this particular mount point.

  • GNOME, nautilus, devicekit-disks: mount USB disk

    Hi,
I recently upgraded and have now nautlius 2.28.2-1 together with devicekit-disks 009-1 installed.
As usual mounting/unmounting USB disks in nautilus stopped working. I searched the wiki, forums, bugs and google to gather information about this topic, but you know ...
When I try to mount a disk (they all show up in nautilus) nautilus pops up an error declaring me "Not Authorized". After quite some reading I think nautilus now uses devicekit-disks to actually mount my USB disks, so I tried to mount it with devicekit-disks:
    [resi@nomad ~]$ devkit-disks --mount /dev/sdc
    Mount failed: Not Authorized
In older versions of nautilus I used to edit some files in /etc to grant myself permissions (PolicyKit.conf), but this does not work anymore.
I found a hint and edited /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.policy (this one is coming with devicekit-disks) and modified the default for the actions org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-mount action:
    <allow_any>yes</allow_any>
Having done so I can now mount the USB disks using nautilus, devicekit-disks or palimpsest (suffering from the same "Not Authorized" problem). Unmounting has a little flaw though, it seems like nautilus tries to eject the medium when unmounting, but then again its "Not Authorized" to do so.
However, this is the only solution I could come up with. Since the file I modified will probably be replaced without notice during the next upgrade I fear I will have to go all the way again, not remembering anymore what I did to fix this (otoh, after writing this I probably will).
And since the values in org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.policy are declared as defaults (and by the fact it lives under /usr) I assume there has to be a site configuration file somewhere in /etc.
Where should I but my customizations? I mean, whats the proper way to do so?
    Thanks,
    Christoph
P.S.: I like nautilus, it makes me unhappy to use thunar/pmount/whatever to mount my disks.

me again ... this whole *kit stuff seems so odd to me.
I finally read all the devicekit, then the policykit docs, Syu-ed and have now devicekit-disks 009-3 installed.
Using polkit-actions without arguments prints a list of registered actions (known to policykit). This list was pretty short:
    [resi@nomad ~]$ polkit-action
    org.freedesktop.policykit.read
    org.freedesktop.policykit.revoke
    org.freedesktop.policykit.grant
    org.freedesktop.policykit.modify-defaults
PolicyKit considers all *.policy files under /usr/share/PolicyKit/policy/, only the policykit package installs its files (well, its one file) there.
devicekit-disks (and probably some other packages providing *.policy files) seems to forget about that. So I added a symlink:
    [root@nomad policy]# ln -s /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.policy /usr/share/PolicyKit/policy/
Thats not enough, the file seems to be out of date. I had to replace all auth_admin_keep defaults with auth_admin_keep_session until the file validated.
    And hurray:
    [resi@nomad ~]$ polkit-action
    org.freedesktop.policykit.read
    org.freedesktop.policykit.revoke
    org.freedesktop.policykit.grant
    org.freedesktop.policykit.modify-defaults
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-mount
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-mount-system-internal
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-check
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-check-system-internal
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-unmount-others
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-lsof
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-lsof-system-internal
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.drive-eject
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.drive-detach
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.change
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.change-system-internal
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.drive-ata-smart-refresh
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.drive-ata-smart-selftest
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.drive-ata-smart-retrieve-historical-data
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.luks-unlock
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.luks-lock-others
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.linux-md
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.cancel-job-others
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.inhibit-polling
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.drive-set-spindown
    polkit-auth shows my authorizations, thus:
    [resi@nomad ~]$ polkit-auth | grep mount
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-mount
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-mount-system-internal
    org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-unmount-others
It seems to me that I am authorized for all actions listed above, I guess thats because this user is in both the wheel and root groups.
However, when I try to actually mount something nothing has changed.
    [resi@nomad ~]$ devkit-disks --mount /dev/sdc
    Mount failed: Not Authorized
Since policykit is now properly configured I can use polkit-action or polkit-gnome-authorization to modify the default values in the way polkit expects me to (not tampering with with the *.policy files).
    [resi@nomad ~]$ polkit-action --action org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-mount
    action_id: org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.filesystem-mount
    description: Mount a device
message: Authentication is required to mount the device
    default_any: yes (factory default: no)
    default_inactive: yes (factory default: no)
    default_active: yes
But even now mounting fails because I'm not authorized.
Back to the start, if I change the factory defaults in org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.policy mounting succeeds.
I think there might be 2 bugs involved here:
1.) missing links to policy files in /usr/share/PolicyKit/policy/
2.) policykit fails to consider overrides for factory defaults
    What do you think?

  • USB disk access of every type is hosed - HELP!?

Newbie with the very latest "Don't Panic" running on a laptop.  I'm coming off a year with various bloateddistros, looking for something fast and stable.
I've got my internal drive up, networking, x, gnome and openoffice all working great.  Next step is to plug in my external 160gig drive with all my data on it.  This is a very standard USB2-to-EIDE drive, I've had no problems with it in any distro.  It's split between a 32gig FAT32 partition and a 119gig Ext3.
I followed the wiki on autofs.  Nothing.  Then played with HAL and the like.  Made my user a member of group "storage".  Still nothing.
I've seen mount problems before of course, so I tried adding gparted via pacman and running that from a root command line just to see what's physically out there.  Not good: gparted never finishes getting past the "Scanning all devices....." process with the blue bar bouncing back and forth.  When gparted first starts I can hear the external disk spin up and chug for a few seconds, but then nothing.
I tried a 1gig USB flash critter (probably Fat32), nothing there either.  I think something is fundamentally hosed in my USB disk support.  I do have a USB external trackball working though...so my ports are up.
    My daemons at present:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond ntpd hal cups gdm alunnd)
    Heeeelp!  Neeeed my daaaata!
Wait, something else weird: if I turn on the external disk I see some CPU activity on my gnome panel monitor.  Nothing major, a few light spikes.  I've got a Celeron 1.6 but with the new 533 memory bus and 2gigs RAM.  Once I run gparted it goes bananas and then once I close gparted CPU activity is pegged hard at 100% - yet there's no listed process eating that.  Then when I turn off the external drive, CPU activity falls back to normal.
    WTF, over?
    Jim

Well before reading Veek's post I got further along.  Almost there I think.
I went and loaded XFCE4 plus extras, and logged in with a XFCE session.  I like having a backup desktop environment anyways in case Gnome gets squirrelly.
In XFCE Thunar shows the disks, but when I try and access 'em I get:
    Failed to mount "128G Volume".
    (exo-mount:4613): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
        Using the fallback 'C' locale.
You are not privileged to mount the volume "128G Volume".
What I can't figure out is, what permissions?  I'm added to groups "storage" and "disks"...any more needed?

  • How to control DE USB disk Automounts.

    Hi,
Can someone please guide me as to how to 'control' Automounts by DE when we plug USB disk drives.
I have KDE4 on my Arch system. When I connect a pen drive/USB HDD which is formatted as vfat/NTFS, the system(or KDE) 'Automounts' it in /media and I have read/write access to it. But if I use the same drive and format it as ext4, it wont be mounted as read/write for normal users but only for root.
Now pen drives and USB HDD's are removable storage drives and hence are volatile and could not have a fixed mount point, so it cannot be mounted by putting an entry in fstab or could they?. And I need my USB HDD frequently, and manually mounting it through CLI everytime and working on it as root is a bad idea i guess.
I am posting this because m confused as to how to control this Automount feature-What is the backend to it? Because I've read that HAL no longer takes care of it and that HAL will be deprecated soon, instead UDEV takes care of it. If that is the case then should I be concerned about polkit? Because that is what's the output provided by Dolphin(freedesktop.org policy prevented blah blah).
Another thing is if HAL is still in use and Automounts my devices then is it independent or polkit is a part of it. Then, is using hal-easy an option or replacement to standard HAL. ??!!??
I tried HAL archwiki and used the code to give a user permission to give rw access to automounted ext filesystems, but then nothing is mounted, it sings the same old freedesktop.org prevented bla blah song. And I think this is a question for all linuxes using Gnome and KDE in general.
    Any help is appreciated.

If by 'ability to mount as user' you mean to mount it manually but read/write access to normal users then yes. But primarily I need automounting as user, also be able to give access to other users for read/write et filesystem automounts.

  • Can I watch iTunes-purchased movies from an Airport Extreme USB disk?

With the newest Airport firmware (7.6.1), it seems I should be able to do this.
My scenario is so basic, I can't understand why I'm having trouble achieving this.
    - I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.2 - since it's a laptop, I don't want to leave it on all the time.
    - I have an AirPort Extreme with a USB disk on it (that I use for backing up my MacBook), recently upgraded to newest firmware 7.6.1.
    - I have a recently purchased Apple TV hard-wired to the AirPort running firmware 4.4.4.
    - I have purchased movies though iTunes on the MacBook Pro.
I want to watch my iTunes-purchased movies on my Apple TV even when my MacBook Pro is sleeping. That is, I would like the movies to be accessible via iCloud, or stored on the USB disk connected to AirPort Extreme, or something/anything.
It seems obvious to me that with an all-Apple set up, and iCloud, this should be easy to achieve.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    j

Really? I need to check that out!
You should certainly be able to add content by reference to itunes from such a disk (even before the update) - so long as itunes knows the location of the file (set Preferences not to copy to local library when adding the media) it will stream it to AppleTV if the disk is available.
I hope you're right, but I'd be surprised if current Extremes can be upgarded to provide a full Home Sharing service - marvellous if they can but I'd be surprised as i've long said we need an Apple media server either based on TC or AE to do this kind of thing.
