    Hello,
I have been using a 16 GB Sandisk Cruzer Fit thumbdrive for the past year.  I tried to access it this morning and it has no files on it.  I checked properties and it says 0 out of 0 GB available.  I tried the drive in another computer with success.  I am able to access a 1 GB thumbdrive on this computer...What's the problem?  What other information do I need to supply?

I also can't perform a system restore. Any suggestions?

  • Mac Pro not Detecting Bootable USB Drive to Install Snow Leopard 10.6

    Hi
I have to Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 GHz Intel Xeon. I have been running Leopard on them. I wish to install snow leopard, so i took out my USB HDD where I have made a Bootable Partition with snow leopard. I have used this in the past on all my machines to install snow leopard. Now when I try to install Snow Leopard from this on my mac pro, it does not detect in the "Option Boot" start up menu, it only shows my leopard disk. If I got to start up disk in system preference, then it shows my Snow Leopard disk, but when i select that as start up, it still boots to my Leopard..
Since I am doing a fresh Install , I have another HDD installed, formatted for snow leopard. When I launch snow leopard installer from Leopard and select install in the new drive, it does some installation , but when restarting  it goes to my leopard again.
This is the case on both the Mac Pro;s, but not on my laptops, I tried on my air and my macbook pro, and my friends mac book pro, it instantly boots up to the usb drive with snow leopard.
So is there anything im missing ? Or is there something wrong with my Mac Pro's?
I dont have the snow leopard DVD, else I would have tried that too..
    Please advice asap!!
    Thanks
    Sa1

    Hey
    Thanks for the reply!
I have two USB HDD, with the copy from snow leopard dvd, and both are formatted in GUID, they work fine on my laptops and even the old mac mini, just not working on two identical Mac Pros.. Its very strange, as it keeps booting to leopard, and if I remove leopard Disk, and just put the new one and connect the USB dive, its shows a folder with a "?" mark sign!
And the USB just works fine after its booted to leopard, it even starts installing snow leopard to the disk i assign, but it does not complete the installation as it boots to main leopard drive..
I have tried to reset PRAM on both machine, I have changed usb slot..
I dont know what to do!

  • Plz help!!! USB driver cannot be detected in XP

    cx2ching,
I'm assuming you are trying Bootcamp. You might want to ask your question in the BootCamp forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=213
One common problem with driver installations occurs if you aren't using Windows XP SP2, I read several threads where this was a problem with the USB drivers, for one.

  • My macbook pro can't detect USB drives

my macbook pro can't seem to detect ANY usb drive. I have already selected to "show external disk/drive" on finder's preferences but it doesn't work. anyone with this problem and has a solution?? THANKS!

Open Disk Utility and see if the USB drives show in there. If they don't then it is a USB port or bus problem. If they do show in disk utility are they formatted in either Mac extended or a Windows format?

  • HP USB Drive not detected

I bought a new 16GB HP USB Drive a day ago. The drive is not recognised by my mac. When I plug the drive in nothing happens.
    - other USB drives work as normal
    - I tried both USB ports (i.e. it's not a mac hardware issue)
    - the USB drive works with my PC
I don't see the USB drive in the disc utilities option. Can anyone suggest what I should do next?
    Thanks in advance

The following  worked for me like a charm but you have to try it at your own risk.
1- Using Bootcamp switch to Windows. It will detect your memory flash HP 16 GB.
2- Click on my Computer, then right click on HP 16GB icon
    3- Select Format
4- Format your Flash selecting FAT32
5- When finished reboot back to MAC and you are ready to go.
    Hope it works for all.
You don't need to boot into Windows, you can format the drive using Disk Utility in OSX

  • USB has power, but not detecting any USB drive. Also crazy trackpad.

I own a 2012 Macbook Pro, and I am running OS X Version 10.9.4 on it. Everything was working fine until last week, when the USB ports stopped working. Now, the USB ports still have power because the lights in my USB drive and external hard disk turn on when I insert them into the system. However, the OS X is not able to detect any of these devices as well as my USB mouse. I have Windows 7 installed on bootcamp, but there is no USB response in Windows 7 as well.
I have done the SMC and PRAM reset, as suggested on numerous other discussions, but there were no improvements.
To add to all this, the trackpad on my macbook started going berserk. The pointer has started to randomly click and drag, while I am not even touching the trackpad. It is extremely hard to move cursor to a particular folder, because the cursor will click and drag a lot of times, while it has reached its destination. Also, the trackpad acts insensitive in certain regions. I tried cleaning the trackpad (as suggested on other discussions), but the problem goes away only temporarily. It seems, after using it for a couple of hours, the problem is back again.
With USB and trackpad not responding, it is getting hard to pass the first week of school. I took it to IT department at my school, they checked it for a couple of minutes, and told me that I'll have to shell out $280 for sending it to Apple Depot. I'll really appreciate any kinda help!
    Thanks for your time!

    Hi @Ak7
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having trouble with your USB ports not recognizing most devices. I am happy to assist with this.
Since it just recently started to happen, I would normally recommend starting with a system restore to a point before the problem began. (say about a week ago or longer if possible) Unfortunately you have already done a reinstall, so there should not be any useful restore points to use.
Presumably you already backed up any data you could before reinstalling windows, and if so, then you could try a system recovery, which would restore the factory image of the notebook. Give it a try and let me know if it makes any difference.

  • [SOLVED] BIOS not detecting USB Drives after i installed Arch

SOLVED: In BIOS under 'Advanced' disable 'Fast BIOS Mode'.
    Original post:
    Hi there!
I'm fairly new to the arch (and linux) scene and just setup my Samsung 530U3B with a brand new installation of arch. Everything went fine and the system is running flawlessly. Almost.
I just happend to notice that BIOS is not checking for USB drives anymore, it just somehow skips that part. If enter the boot selection, the bootable USB drive won't show up. Neither does it show up in BIOS setup. I tried to boot with the same USB drive that i used to install arch just yesterday, the live media does not boot - the drive doesn't even blink. The boot priority is set to usb drive first, the boot selection screen (hammering f10 during boot) doesn't give me any other option than to boot from the normal SSD. Also, prior to the arch installation (came with w7 installed) the BIOS screen would stay for about 2seconds and then proceed to boot - this doesn't happen anymore. When i press the power button greeted by the grub bootloader in about 1s.
I tried 2 different usb drives, both with the arch iso (same that i used to install the currently running OS, downloaded yesterday). The drives also show up once my arch is booted (starting to blink just after i hit enter in grub). Also, both drives boot without a problem on my desktop computer.
    Anyone got any ideas?
I don't really now what kinda of information would be helpful so i'm just dumping stuff i know:
BIOS: Phoenix SecureCore Tiano Version 04XK
    Machine: Samsung 530U3B
    SSD: Samsung MZ7PC128HAFU-000
ISO used to install (checksum ok): archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso

    Welcome to the forum.
If you just set the USB stick to be first in the boot order, the next option (from the list) takes its place the moment you unplug it. You need to set the BIOS to boot from your equivalent of "Removable Devices" first, "Internal Drives" second and "Optical Drives" third.
The USB stick doesn't show up at all. I set the priority as follows:
    1. USB HDD
    2. USB FDD
    3. USB CD
    4. SATA CD
    5. SATA HDD
    6. NETWORK
I used that same configuration to install arch. USB doesn't seem to initialize at all. Also, if i enter "usb" in the grub commandline, no devices are listed.
    Thanks!
    UPDATE:
I just figured it out. In my BIOS under 'Advanced' the 'Fast BIOS Mode' was enabled, once i disabled it, everything went fine. I don't remember changing that option. Silly me.
    Sorry for your time

  • Dodgy 10.4.4 upgrade - USB drives not detected

Something strange happened to me last time I ran Software Update. Out of the four updates available -- iTunes 6.0.2, iPod Updater 2006-01-10, QuickTime 7.0.4 and Mac OS X 10.4.4 -- only the first two ran successfully, while the two other displayed red warning signs showing they hadn't been installed. That's strange, I thought -- never happened to me before. Anyway, after clicking OK, Software Update scanned again for updates and again listed the QuickTime update, but not the Mac OS X update. I proceeded to install QuickTime, successfully this time, and then restarted.
After restart I looked in the About this computer dialog, which told me it was running 10.4.4. I didn't reflect further on this, since things seemed okay, but since then I've noticed that the computer can't find my iPod when I plug it in, nor my USB flash drive. The iPod is recognized only if it is plugged in during a restart. Logging out and then in again doesn't work. (I haven't tried on the USB drive.)
Strangely, while the Software Update log doesn't list the 10.4.4 update, it won't appear when running Sotware Update itself. So while the log can't recall installing it, the program thinks it did?
Anyway, I'll try to manually download 10.4.4 and install it. If anyone has some other tip, I'd be grateful.

Ok, don't mind me I managed to install it 10.4.4 again (after first discovering I couldn't mount disk images, then downloading to my iBook instead and sending the .pkg to the iMac, running the install once and only getting through 60% of it, and the inexplicably succeeding on the second try). Everything now works as expected! Happy, happy, joy, joy!

  • How do  I Install Windows 7 on Mac Book Pro via a Bootable USB Drive

    Hi Guys,
I have a Mac Book Pro 13 inch, Early 2011 Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 (I initially had OS 10.5.8 which I upgraded to OSX 10.9.4 a few months ago).
When purchased it, I installed Windows via Super Drive (that being the only time i ever used the super drive). My Windows got corrupted for some reason 2 months ago. Hence, I removed the windows via Bootcamp to perform a fresh install. I discovered my Super Drive was no longer working.
Thereon I have been trying to install Windows via a bootable USB Drive but am failing to do so. After going through several forums, I have reached the following stage.
    1. Created Bootable Windows USB Drive using Windows USB (http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Bootable-Windows-7-or-Vista-USB-Drive). Have used this USB drive to install windows on a DELL Computer
    2. Bootcamp wasnt creating a partition for windows since no Windows Installation disc was being detected in super drive. (Solved it by downloading Toast Titanium and loading the .iso file on a virtual drive).
    3. Boot menu was initially not detecting external drive, so installed rEFIt - An EFI Boot Menu and Toolkit. Now it is detecting the USB Drive.
Now when I boot from this device, it get a black screen with the message "No bootable device - Insert Boot Disk"
Request someone to please help me install windows as some softwares which I work with are windows based.

So my understanding is that my Boot Camp Assistant (BCA), since it does not allow USB installer, it sets NVRAM to boot from Optical Drive. Right?
    Yes.
So can I change it or update it to another BCA version which supports the same??
All BCA versions drive the logic based on the Mac Model Identifier. Unfortunately there is no real workaround. .

  • Why do USB drives plugged into USB hubs make my Mac Book Pro (Retina late 2013) wake from sleep?

I have 2 x USB hubs, a Logitech USB 2.0 hub and a Broway USB 3.0 hub. Tested both and both seem to be the cause of my late 2013 Mac Book Pro waking from sleep. I ran syslog to find out why (syslog |grep -i "Wake reason") and the reason I got back was "kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: XHC1" - this means nothing to me, but it didn't take too much mucking about to hunt the problem down and figure out it was the USB hub with any USB drive attached. If the drive is attached directly to the computer. No problem, computer sleeps fine.
This was a problem I encountered (and never solved) with OSX 10.6.8, a 2008 Macbook Pro the same Logitech USB 2.0 hub, but with different drives. I put the problem down to a bug that never got solved in an old system. But I am simply AMAZED after my update to a new MBP and new system that it is still about almost 6 years, a dozen MBP's and 4 systems later.
The other problem is that not only does the USB drive/ USB hub combo wake the computer it also loses the drive upon sleep and mounts it again upon wake. Then repeats this process every couple of minutes. And it obviously doesn't eject the drives properly because each time I return to the computer after I put it to sleep or let it go to sleep I get a giant list of "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notifications about it. Which I'm guessing could eventually cause some file damage.
I've tried combinations of different drives, different hubs (a Belkin and a no-name Chinese brand 2.0 hub) and the problem persists. Is there a solve to this problem? I'm surprised to see so little posts on forums about this. Am I just unlucky and got another combination of faulty/problematic hardware, or is this a real problem that exists for everyone? If not I would love to know if people have found winning combos of USB hubs and drives. But if it is, then it HAS to be solved.
If you have a Macbook Pro, then you are limited to 2 USB outlets, this is obviously a bare minimum and I would say that 95% of people using their laptop computer in the office or at home have a hub, and very likely a USB drive attached to it. I know actual Apple reps don't really pay much attention to the community support posts, but I've got 6 months worth of Applecare left and would like suggestions about how to get Apple's attention about this problem.
BTW Jettison (a 3rd party app that ejects drives properly before sleep) is not a solve. It is a 3rd party app that tries to fill a hole in a broken system. I don't want to eject my drive upon sleep, I want it to got the **** to sleep.

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.
PS: Perhaps the computer needs to go into Apple & have a genius
or product specialist at AASP test the unit thoroughly... BlueTooth?

  • Apple mobile device USB driver is missing and cannot be installed

    Hi,
My iPod nano (6th gen) is not recognised by iTunes but is recognised by Windows sometimes (once in 2-3 attempts).
Every time I connect my iPod to my laptop, a window pops up saying "an iPod is detected but could not be identified properly...".
I looked through apple support page and narrowed down the cause to the driver.
Apple mobile device USB driver does not show up in Device Manager.
However iPod does show up under Portable Devices as a camera when iPod is recognised by Windows.
I tried reinstalling Apple Mobile Device USB Driver as it was shown in the support page (right click on iPod in Device Manager>update driver software>...).
This did not work (gave me an error saying "the folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device...".
So I tried another method I found online; extract iTunes installer (itunes6464setup.exe), extract AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi in it, and use the files in it to update driver.
This gave me the same error.
It seems that a Windows driver is installed for my iPod (WPD FileSystem Volume Driver); when I opt for "search automatically" in Uptade driver software, this driver shows up with the message "the best driver for your device is already installed".
Also, my iPod is shown in Devices and Printers with an exclamation mark (when I connect my iPod to my laptop, the exclamation mark shows up only after I click OK on the message window "an iPod is detected but could not be identified properly...")
Troubleshoot showed "Windows is uninstalling this device (Code 21)".
I'd appreciate it if someone could help with the situation.
I'm using Windows 8.1, iTunes 12.1 for Windows 64bit, and iPod nano 6th gen.
I haven't connected my iPod to my laptop for a long while, but I recall connecting an iPhone to my laptop a while ago and it was recognised just fine.
After that I updated my Windows from 8 to 8.1, but I don't think it has anything to do with the problem as my iPod wasn't recognised by iTunes before and after the update.
    Thank you in advance!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases. Or roll back to the previous build:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)
