USB Drive Icon Location

Hello there all. I have a question: where are all of the drive icons stored? The USB, FireWire, etc. I think that they would be in the library somewhere, but I am not sure.
Thanks

I found these links. Don't know if this helps.http://osxdaily.com/2014/07/27/mac-os-x-system-icons-location /http://www.macbreaker.com/2012/02/location-of-mac-os-x-system-icons.html   https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1252385?start=0&tstart=0

  • Can't see my USB drive icon

I have a small USB Flash drive that has always been formatted in FAT (16). This drive works fine on my iMac G5 with OSX 10.4.8. However, when I take the drive home to my iMac (Intel) also running the latest OS X version, I cannot get the icon to appear in the sidebar or on the desktop. The drive is mounted and usable because I can open it via Spotlight, and I see it in Disk Utility. I used to see the icon, then it just stopped being seen. It may have been after one of the automatic software updates to the OS, but I cannot be sure.
So any ideas as to why the drive icon is visible on G5 but not Intel iMac?

What usually works well is to plug the flash drive back in. With luck it will appear on the desktop, and be accessible. That is when you should unmount the drive properly. To unmount the drive, do one of the following -
    • Select the drive by clicking its icon once, then press Command-E (Eject in the File menu).
    • Right-click or Control-click the icon for the drive, and select Eject from the contextual menu that appears.
    • Drag the icon to the Trash. The Trash icon will change to an eject symbol when you're partway there - keep dragging it all the way to the Trash, drop it into that symbol.
Once the drive has been unmounted you can safely unplug it.

  • USB drive icons missing

When I plug a USB flash drive into my MacBook Air hte only way O ca access it is through the find function. The icon for the flash drive does not appear on the desktop. This is a recent dvelopment and I cannot think of anything I did to start his condition.
    Any suggestions?

  • Changing usb drive icon.

has external hard disks have own icon, I would to have one for pendrives.... because I use a lot of, and I have to guest what is a mounted disk image or what is a pendrive.

The method I have used involves only use of Finder. A generic method . Get a suitable icon. Select it. Copy to clipboard. Highlight icon to be changed. Click Command +I. In the information box, highlight the icon at the top left of the box. Do a paste. Paste the contents of clipboard to the place of the standard icon. Two things . Make it a jpeg or Tiff and not some esoteric format. Make it a decent size. Secondly you may find you don't own the file whose icon you want to change. This OS user does not own the Mac Hd volume. System can read and write, Admin can read and write. the rest can only read. To get round that, other than using an admin login, temporarily add the user logged into to the permissions list. Temporarily give that user read write permission. Perform the paste then reverse the user addition etc. You do this with the users with the bottom section of the Command+I box. Click on the lock. Authenticate. Click the plus sign at the left. From the dialogue that pops up choose the desired user then with the double disclosure arrows, choose read write permission. BUT do change the things back to the default once the icon is changed.
One can either make one's own icon up or browse the web for the sets of free ready mades. I took a backup app icon to use for the appropriate backup partition of an external HD.

  • USB Drive and iPod do not show up on desktop

    Hello,
I put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for awhile and overnight. When I come back and wake it, my USB drive does not appear on the desktop. I have to restart the iMac to get it to come back.
Also, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes updates it and then within 10 minutes, the icon does not show on the desktop but I can see the iPod in iTunes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Brad

I did run the hardware test and everything passed.
For about 3 hours last night, everything was working fine. This morning the USB drive icon is there but not the iPod. I think I will try the OS reinstall but not for about a week. I will be out of town all next week and can't get to it before I leave.
Something may have gone wacky while loading some application. A couple of the suspects would be Adobe Lightroom beta 4 or Google Earth. This issue only started within the last 5 days or so and I think those are the only applications I've loaded in that time.
Thanks for the help in eliminating some of the culprits. I think the OS install should fix. If not, it may be time to have Apple take a look.

  • All files in Blackberry folder on Micro SD/USB drive gone!

how could something like this happen? the minute I plug my micro SD, which contains files in a blackberry folder (this folder works fine when transferring files back and forth between my blackberry and windows PC), into my used macbook pro that i just bought today, the folder is completely deleted. two other folders which i didn't open in the micro sd are still there. all i did was open the blackberry folder when the micro sd popped up as an icon in the background. i had some mp3 files and video files saved in a subfolder of the blackberry folder. I went to a subfolder named "video" and carefully selected just five mp3 files. with the files selected, i held the control key while tapping the trackpad to bring up the pop-up menu. i then clicked on "open file from" and selected iTunes on the right to listen to these songs. what happened next was bizarre. iTunes wouldn't play the songs. So I closed the folder and reopened it only to find that the subfolder names in the blackberry folder appear in a bunch of funny characters! i close the folder again and when i reopen the usb drive icon, the blackberry folder itself doesn't show up at all this time.

what make me really mad is that i repeated the same exact process but with another folder called "mp3" in the same usb drive and the mp3 files i selected played in itunes without a hitch! so what is going on here? i lost some important files in my blackberry folder and when i looked at the hidden trash.bin files by plugging the micro sd/usb drive into a windows pc, the size of the trash files are 0k and 4k. there's nothing in the trash files at all.

  • Installing Sol10 from DVD - USB drive as flash source

OK. First I managed to format the removable USB drive as UFS. Then I
could mount it as a UFS drive and copy my flash archive file onto it.
I've got another machine that I want to install Solaris 10 and use
this flash archive. So I boot from DVD and was hoping to be able to
specify the USB drive as location of flash archive. Trouble is even
going into the mini-shell it doesnt seem to work.
Any ideas? Or are there easier ways to do this?
I did think of Jumpstart or specifying the flash location as netwrok
drive or FTP but I dont think thats going to work. Trouble is first
time around I had a job getting the network interface to work - not
supported during the solaris 10 install but had to install a driver
    later.
Is there any way to slipstream this driver into the Solaris 10
install? (like you can do with windows)

I am trying to install Windows (8, specifically, but that has nothing to do with my problem) on my MacBook Pro 15-inch, mid 2009 (3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo, 4 GB 1067 Mhz memory) running OS X 10.8.2.
I have a Windows 8 ISO and a 8 GB USB drive, so it is my understanding that I should be able to create a Windows install disk on the USB drive using boot camp. This looks incredibly easy based on every tutorial I have found online, and if I got the screenshot they all show me, I'm sure I would have no trouble:
However this is not the screenshot I get. Originally I was trying to do this last night on OS X 10.7, and I thought the issue might be with my version of bootcamp, but I have now purchased and upgraded to 10.8 and have the same issue with boot camp 5.0, that is my Boot Camp initialization looks like this:
As you can see, I am missing the key option of creating a Windows install disk.
I've exhausted my google-ing capabilities trying to find out why my Boot Camp does not give me this option, or trying to find a work-around, but it seems to create a Windows install disk from an ISO on a USB without Boot Camp can't be done on a Mac.
Can anyone please help me resolve this issue?
You are nearly right, it can't be done on a Mac that has an optical drive, and yours does. Burn the ISO to a DVD.

  • Regular + 3 startup chimes with USB Drive

I want to know if this behavior is normal.
I have a 300GB USB drive (formatted as Mac OS extended (journaled)) connected to my mac mini with its power on all the time. When I start up the mini after the USB drive has spun down I get the regular startup chime plus 3 lower volume startup chimes. The activity light on the USB drive flashes during the 3 chimes. Then the system starts normally with the USB drive icon on the desktop.
If I shutdown the mini and start it up again but now the USB hard drive has not spun down, I get the normal single chime. Also, if the USB drive is disconnected, I get the normal one chime.
Are the subsequent 3 chimes at startup OK and just telling me that there is an external hard drive?

I got my mac mini in March.
I plugged the hard drive into a different USB port...still the same 3 extra chimes at startup.
I plugged in a USB flash drive. It made no additional sounds. It appears it's just the hard drive.
As I said before, I notice no problems with the mini. I just used iMovie to edit a two hour home movie and burned it using iDVD.
Does anyone have an external hard drive connected to a USB port and NOT experience extra chimes at startup?

  • Padlock Symbol at Lower Left of USB hard drive Icon - What does it mean ?

Presumably the small locked padlock that appears at the lower left corner of my USB external hard drive's mounted icon when I boot into Leopard means the volume is locked in some way ????
This volume is NOT my designated Time Machine volume.
I seem to be able, as my computer's administrator, to still write to and read from this drive and the permissions look OK for it so what does this newly appearing lock icon mean and how do I get rid of it ?
Also: on the Mac's internal drive this time, Why is the finder asking for my password very time I try to move or delete files and folders from my own home documents folder when logged in normally as myself ? Don't I "own" my own home folder ?????

I too want to join in on this Band Wagon! I did nothing new to my Mac Pro running Leo 10.5.2 and all current updates applied. First thing I noticed was copying files from an external usb drive. The file would get to almost finished and have maybe a couple of bits left. Then a notice would appear saying the files were corrupted. (NOT) I had to Force Quit the Finder and Relaunch it in order to remove the warning notice off of the desktop. Then I noticed 1 of my 4 internal drives with the padlock on the lower left hand side. As I was investigating that drive another drive blinked and then it too had the padlock! Now the external usb drive also has a padlock. I looked at permissions with (Command I) and found that my permissions had been changed to "Custom" which could not be changed back to read & write. In fact all of the affected drives now have the same issue. So to try to fix them I added myself to the users side of the permissions box and gave myself read and write permissions in the hope I could delete the custom permissions account. No Luck! But I was able to delete the new read write account? Ran Disk utility from the DVD an the drives still show up as being locked. Anyway when I removed the DVD I let the machine reboot. Now for the fun! It gets up to the grey background & spinning gears, goes to black and restarts. It stays caught caught in this loop until I kill the power. Call Apple support & they told me what I already knew. Reformat & start over. I do not find that to be an answer I want to know what caused it & how to fix it! Since my company just invested in 50 of these units and I am the only technician for over 200 users.

  • Airport/USB Drive as a library location?

We have 4 Macs in our family, and 4 different iPhoto Libraries. I have an Airport Extreme Gigabit with a 300GB USB drive attached. A few questions:
    1. Can I use this drive to store and access an iPhoto library?
    2. If so, can there be one master library that each Mac accesses, so that all of our photos are in the same library?
    3. In regards to speed in accessing photos, will there be a significant decrease in speed using this method?
    Thanks in advance!
    Ty

    Hi
    1. Yes
    2. Yes, but.
    3. I don't know.
Now, for more about that 'Yes, but...
If you want the other users to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto on all machines
On each machine in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. All machines will have full access to the library, in fact, all achines will 'own' it.
BUT, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Desktop drive icon missing for just one of several USB external drives

I have a Mac Mini running OS 10.8.2 Server. There are 12 Seagate Flex USB drives (attached through two USB 2.0 powered hubs) and 3 Western Digital Firewire drives, and until last week all functioned absolutely normally. Last week the desktop icon for one (just one!) of the Firewire drives dissappeared, but the drive is still mounted in /Volumes. It is even correctly shared and can be remotelly accessed on another Mini and a MacBook. Disk Utility shows that it is mounted, and the Repair Disk function unmounts, checks, reports all is well and remounts. I'm just missing the icon in Finder.  Where is it?
Before you suggest it.... Yes, hard disks is checked under Finder Devices preferences. All the other drives do show as expected in both the root folder view and on the Finder sidebar. This one drive is mounted and visible in ls -ls /Volumes, but missing from desktop, root folder and sidebar in Finder.

I am having the exact issue with both 10.8.5 and 10.9.1 servers.
The server is doing well and then one day without notice or failure the desktop icon for the shared volume is gone. The share remains mounted and available to users. The volume is not showing damaged or any other problem. The volume can be found in terminal and by doing a finder go to the /Volumes area and all is there. But, even though disk utility shows it mounted and all else is good, Server app then starts to loose the volume for maintenance and propogation etc, it still shares but can't be seen or touched by GUI's.
I also was easily able to get back all through Backups that were up to date so no data loss, but this is quite disconcerting.
One possible variable is that both that I have seen are software RAIDs (Disk Utility raids).
If anyone has any thoughts I appreciate it.
The two servers are Mac Pro 2012 4 core 10.8.5 server and Mac Pro 2008 early 4 core 10.9.1 server.
    Thanks MDB

  • Custom Icons with FAT32 USB Drive

    Hi
I want to put a custom icon on a USB drive that's formatted to FAT32.
When I do this with a Mac OS Extended formatted USB drive, it works fine - the icon is attached to the dive, and appears when the the drive is mounted on another Mac.
But when I do this with a FAT32 formatted USB drive, the icon works on my desktop, but does not appear when the drive is mounted on another Mac.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
    Thanks for your help.
    Bruno.

    Hmm, error -20 is:
-20 writErr Driver can't respond to Write call
I'm not sure why it would be doing that. I've got two PNY brand flash drives and have no problem erasing them under Tiger or Panther. You mention trying to repartition the drive. I suppose it's possible that you can't have more than one partition on a flash drive. Maybe the whole thing has to be one format type. Don't know that for sure, though. I've never tried it.

  • Issue: USB HUB displaying corrupt drive Icons

    Hello everyone,
On my new computer (Windows PRO 8.1 64 Bit, Intel X99 (i7-5960X CPU)) I decided to install a 3.0 USB HUB. The HUB is a EXSYS EX-1181 10-port USB 3.0 HUB. In my initial configuration of my computer, my wireless headphone (LOGITECH wireless G930 Headset) signal
receiver was connected to the HUB as well as other USB keys. Little did I know that for proper use of my wireless headphones, the wireless signal receiver had to be connected
directly onto the computer and not indirectly like via a USB HUB port. Upon correction of the problem, my headphones worked properly.
However the fact that I plugged the headphones wireless signal receiver onto the HUB somehow corrupted the USB HUB. Now, whenever I plug a drive (USB stick, external hard drive, Ipod,...) onto the HUB, my computer always shows the connected drive with an
icon corresponding exactly to the headphones. No matter which port I use and no matter what I connect to the HUB, the drive will always have a Headset Icon on Windows Explorer and not the standard drive icon image.
Could anyone please help me with this issue?
    Thank you a lot,
    Best,

  • How to copy a networked TimeMachine backup to a USB drive and restore from it?

    Hi,
I backup my MacBook Air with TimeMachine to my QNAP NAS which offers a TimeMachine backup service and I can restore data from it OK.
Working in IT, and being a bit paranoid about important data loss, I am concerned that if I was robbed or my house burnt down I would most likely lose both the MacBook and the TimeMachine Backup on my NAS :-(
To protect against this I have backup my (linux based) NAS to an external drive that I keep offsite. This drive is encrypted to keep my data secure with a Linux form of encryption (cryptsetup) and hence can't be plugged into a MacBook to try and restore from it - I doubt this would work either as the TimeMachine data is not located in the root of the drive.
So what I have done to test my restore process is to mount the encrypted NAS backup that include the TimeMachine backup folders on a Linux machine and then copy the TimeMachine data to the root of an HFS+ formatted external USB drive.
But, now I am stuck as how to try and restore something from this to my MacBook to see if the copy of the TimeMachine backup is good. If I press the Alt key on the TimeMachine icon, I can select an alternate backup device and when I enter TimeMachine to browse the data, I can browse the structure but there is no option to go back in time !! It seems like it is not possible to restore from this copy of the TimeMachine backup.
Does anyone know if this should be possible, and if so, what am I doing wrong here?
    Rgds
    Gary

For anyone else that may be in a similar situation, I can confirm that this does actually work.
I am unsure why I was not able to mount the original sparseimage that I copied to the USB drive before, but I have gone through the entire process again and I could successfully mount the TM sparseimage onto my MacBook and restore files from within it using TimeMachine to my Mac.
This is a Disaster Recovery solution only needed for if both my NAS and Macbook get stolen or damaged so I am happy with this solution for now.
I will try the restore process several more times from my monthly backups to reassure myself that the first failure to mount the sparse image was an anomaly.
This is the process that I have tested:
Configure MacBook to backup to TimeMachine Service running on QNAP NAS device.
Perform regular backup of QNAP NAS Device (Linux) including the TimeMachine backup data to an external USB drive with encryption enabled and store this device safely off-site
In time of loss of both NAS and MacBook, Time Machine data can be recovered to another Mac without the need of the NAS  using the following process:
Mount the external drive containing the backup of the NAS filesystem (ext4) which is encrypted onto a Linux host so it is readable - use the cryptsetup luksOpen options to access the encrypted filesystem then mount it.
Mount a n empty HFS+ formatted USB drive  on the Linux host
Use Rsync to copy the sparsebundle from the external NAS drive backup disk to the root of the USB Drive
Insert the HFS+ formatted USB containing the sparesbundle into the Mac's USB port
Double click the sparsebundle to mount it onto the Mac as a Volume
Using Alt button and the TimeMachine icon, select use alternative backup disk and you should see the TM backup in the sparsebundle
Enter TimeMachine and you should be able to restore any/all files
Hope that helps someone else and thanks to LaPastenague for pointing me in the direction of some of the answers I needed.
