USB Hub Connection

Hello All,
This is my first Mac and I have to say that I really like the UI and how media friendly this seems to be. On to my question. I have a home network that has 3 Windows PCs and the new Mac attached. All machines connect to a Linksys router (811g) without a problem.
I also have a USB hub that has two shared drives and a printer hanging off of it. The PCs see the USB hub, can print, and see the shared drives. The Mac cannot.
Now my knowledge is limited and I expect that the answer is quite simple. Any suggestions out there?
Thanks.

I was having the same problem with my USB hub after connecting an audio interface that used up one of my USB ports on my MacBook Pro.  I connected the hub to the other computer port.  That's when all the trouble started with trying to come out of sleep mode.
My solution was to connect my keyboard directly to the computer port and then daisy chain the hub out of the USB port on the keyboard. It seems that you need to have your input devices on the first part of the chain.
I hope that's helpful
Cheers.

  • Time Machine Backup of USB Hub connected HDD

    Hi all,
I've got 2 HDD's connected to my AEBS through a USB hub. One is for TM backup, the other for extended storage. Is there a way to include the latter during backup?
TM is working fine wirelessly through the AEBS, and both drives mount at startup in my finder, but there is no evidence of it being included in the backup/sparsebundle. The extra drive is not in TM's excluded list and it is Mac OS journaled.
Anybody trying this setup with any amount of success?
    Thanks.

Yep, trying to include the extra storage disk in the TM backup. I realize I can connect the disk to a backedup Mac as a quick fix, but need the extra storage disk to remain an airdisk for remote access, independent of my computer.
So, I'm guessing there is no way to include it as long as it's sharing a spot on the AEBS's USB hub?

  • USB HUB connection issues

I recently added a D-LINK DUB-H7 to my macbook.. The usb hub works fine when my macbook pro starts up but after the laptop goes into sleep mode I will experience either problems with a few of the devices connected not responding or all of the devices not responding.  The only solution seems to be a reboot of my macbook pro.
Does anyone know if this problem is Mavericks related or if there is something I can do within the system to prevent the connection from being lost when waking my Mac from sleep mode?

  • USB Hub Connections Vanishing?

I have a relatively new MacBook Air and I seem to be having a consistent problem with USB hubs.
I've purchased 3 different brands of POWERED USB hubs, and all of them exhibit the same pattern...
If I connect my ethernet adapter and then connect my iPhone, after around 20 to 30 seconds or so all USB connections vanish (in the middle of my iPhone sync). If I use only 1 device at a time on the hubs, they work fine...
I've tried 3 different brands of hubs (all powered & plugged in), including Belkin & MacAlley...
Is this an indication that my system is having a hardware problem?

Could be a problem with the iPhone. I'm unable to sync my iPhone through a hub, only directly connected. Apple recommends not to connect the iPhone through a hub.

  • Access to external drives connected to Airport Extreme via USB Hub

I have 2 computers connected wirelessly to an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station. I have a Belkin powered USB hub connected to the USB port on the Extreme. There is a Lacie hard drive, a USB printer and a Kingston flash drive connected to the USB hub.
The printer was connected using Bonjour and is working fine. The other devices connected to the USB hub aren't getting picked up. They did work at one point, but are no longer viewable from the computers (MAC Book and Windows XP). How can I re-configure the Extreme or my computers so that they'll work again?

DLNA = Digital Living Network Alliance. DLNA works in a Server-Client fashion with the Server providing the means to stream audio/video files to the client. DLNA servers are also called media servers. The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), with an attached USB HDD at best, can perform as a media storage device ... not as a server. You would still need a media server (either hardware or software) to perform this role.
For example, I use a software DLNA-compliant media server, called TwonkyServer. I run this server on one of my Mac minis. It gets its media files that are stored on a USB HDD attached to my 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). TwonkyServer then streams these video files to my Xbox 360 which performs as a media client/player.

  • Can I connect USB hubs instead of printer or external disk?

I plan to get a MacBook Pro and set up a wireless network. I currently have a couple of USB hubs connected to a PC. To these hubs are connected three printers, two external disks, and several other things. I want to be able to get rid of the PC and access these devices from the MacBook wirelessly. Is the AESB the right thing to use for this setup?
The MacBook Pro will have Snow Leopard as OS.

Most likely yes. The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) USB port is capable of supporting a USB hub with multiple USB printers and/or USB hard drives.

  • Mount USB Ext drive that is connected to Airport Ext base sta via usb hub

My Lacie drive disappeared from the desktop after downloading a recent Mac software update. It is connected to my compter wirelessly via a usb hub connected to AirportExtreme Base Station. The only way to get it back on the desk top is to connect it directly to either th Airport base station or the laptop without going through the hub. I've tried different hubs and none works. However, all of the support the printer wirelessly. Is there another usb drive out there that works? I'm ready to dump the Lacie.

Make sure your lacie firmware is up to date as well....I dont know which drive you have but you can visit http://www.lacie.com/us/support/drivers/index.htm?id=10007 to see what the latest firmware downloads are for your drive. I have an Ethernet Disk mini v2 (Gigabit) and firmware update solved access issues.

  • Airport Extreme will not auto connect after poewr out with USB Hub!

    Hi all,
I have just purchased the Airport Extreme and have it connected to my ADSL router. All works fine but if the airport looses power (as the household power went off momentarily today) then once it powers back up it will not connect to the internet unless I unplug the USB hub connected to it first.
    Anyone with similar experiences?

    No
Your issue may have something to do with your ADSL router and/or ISP carrier when you have power interruption.
I would contact Apple to take advantage of your free 90 days of tech support by phone since your product is "new." Let them tell you what the problem is.

  • Share usb hard drive with a usb hub

I have a USB Hub connect to the AEBS with a Dymo Label Writer and a WD USB drive connected. While I see the drive and the printers in the Airport Utility, I can't seem to connect to them from either WinXP Pro computer.
Any idea what is wrong that I can't see them

Hey guys, thank you all for your replies!
Given actual price of hardware, I went for a totally different solution...
I bough a used PC which I boosted with 4 GB of RAM... it's a intel dual core... and I plugged in a Terabyte SATA drive.
It's much less expensive than a mac mini.
Then I installed Ubuntu Server LTS and Samba for file sharing... FREE of course
All that to get a very great file server that acts in PDC (security=domain) mode so it's totally great
None of the NAS I reviewed gave me enough freedom for the file sharing management that I wanted, and the mac mini + leopard server solution where too expensive.
Once my little company grows, imma get a Xserve fo sho but for now, this setup is the best for me
once again, thank you for your replies

  • Mega PC issue with usb hub

I have an MSI Mega PC with the following config:
    2.66GHz P4 533Mhz FSB CPU
    2x512MB PC2700 DDR
    160GB Maxtor 7200RPM IDE Drive
    ATI Radeon 7500 All-In-Wonder
    TDK 440N DVD±R/RW drive
    Windows XP Pro SP1a
I have a ton of USB peripherals
    Linksys USB Wirless Ethernet
    ATI Wireless Receiver
    Western Digital 80GB External Drive
    Epson Scanner
    Epson Printer
    Veo Webcam
    Canon S400 Digital Camera hookup
To support the additional peripherals, I added a powered USB 2.0 hub to the rear of the system.  This worked for a week but then the card readers in the front no longer were recognized by the system. Also the boot up into Windows would take 3-4 minutes where it used to take less than 30 seconds. Under the Device manager, one of the USB controllers has a yellow exclamation mark that I could not get rid of.
I can alleviate these problems if I hook up the hub to one of the front usb ports instead of the back.  This is ok though I would rather have the usb hub connected to the back for aesthetic reasons.  Anybody know why there would be a problem hooking a usb hub to the back?

The most likely problem is the cable or USB connector. First, try another USB port, preferably in the back of your PC, and not on an external hub. Next get another cable.

  • FireWire/USB hubs compatible with a Dual 2.0 GHZ G5

    Hello,
I have a IOGEAR 7 port Firewire - usb hub connected to my dual 2.0ghz G5. Often when I start my G5 there won't be any working firewire and/or usb port. Sometimes they work, but overall is a pain./ Sometimes repairing permissions or reseting the nvram or all helps solve the problem.
Anyway, I would assume that the Hub is having some issues with the Firewire power coming from the G5
I am trying to find a list of Firewire/USB Hubs which Apple officially have said are compatible with the G5.
Do you guys know any of those?
    Thank you

I still think save and consider the next revision to the iMac line rather than throw more at your G5.
SATA drives that you can use now and in the future are likely to be safe investments.
People have used 3 x 10K VelociRaptors, along with cheaper but still fast WD Caviar 640GB as a great way to improve performance. SSDs are fast but probably for 1st gen G5 would require a PCI-X controller.

  • IPhone and USB hub ....

    Hi,
Is there a reason why my iPhone does not show up when connected to my USB 2.0 hub ??? If connected to my iMac it shows up ...
    Thanks in advance.

Apple usually prevents problems that simple. My computer's 3 USP ports are already crowded ... Plugging my iPhone to my iMac is a plug/unplug situation.
So plug your other devices into the hub and reserve one dedicated USB port for the iPhone.
I would have also thought Apple would have implemented a feature that exists already in most of cell phones, a wireless connection to sync with the computer. No wireless and no USB hub connection.
The iPhone is not most cell phones. It is a unique piece with unique features. If it did everything that other cells did the same way there would be no need for it.
If I add to that the absence of a search feature in iCal and Address Book, the fact that they are no notes already implemeted, I would say they are letting go features bit by bit. Design is good and can get iPhone sold, but we usually think of Apple more like a genial feature driven architect.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.htm.
Narrowing us to use only one cellular company to get a share of our ATT's (or other cell phone companies) monthly cell fees is the biggest insult to the Apple community. In business we call this a «kick back» and it is normally badly perceived. You sell your product a decent price and with honest and upfront conditions and customers will respect and be loyal. I really don't appreciate this move from Apple and me and my family are loyal users since 1984. Considering asiatic markets are potential buyers and can give Apple big profits, Apple can afford to offer a unlocked iPhone to the world.
Its not uncommon for a cell to be locked to a carrier upon initial release. In addition to this, there are a few features on the iPhone (Visual Voicemail) that required the carriers to upgrade their current systems. This could not have been offered with an unlocked release.

  • MacBook won't boot with USB hub attached

My new MacBook stalls during the boot process when my powered, 4-port USB 2.0 hub is attached. If I unplug it from the USB port, OS X continues to successfully boot up.
Is this a known issue? The same hub works fine with my PowerBook G4.
    Thanks.
    MacBook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo | iPod 5G 60GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yeah, I've already tried that. Much thanks for the reply, though.
It boots fine once the hub is unplugged. I'm just too lazy to remember to unplug the thing every time I start my MacBook. And, I'm generally annoyed because it all worked okay with my PowerBook G4.
So, anyone with a MacBook that boots up fine with a USB hub connected, what kind do you have? I need a recommendation.
    Thanks.

  • Inconsistant and unreliable TC when using USB hub

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule, and have a Sitecom USB hub connected to it. On the USB hub are 2 external HDs, totalling to 3 partitions externally, plus the 500GB internal HD. I also connect either a Sandisk SD card reader or a Sandisk USB stick to it.
Now, I just got the Time Capsule, gave it to my dad as a birthday present, and have just set the whole thing up. The thing is, it works well as a wireless router, but I cannot seem to get the USB connectivity working properly. When I try to access one of the USB-drives (be it a HD, card reader or USB stick), the thing crashes, the iMac freezes, and I have to restart both. The thing is, that it does not always does this. Sometimes it works fine, other times I have to enter my password and user name up to 3 times before it works, and even other times the TC just stares at me with a blank expression going "you want me to do WHAT NOW?!"
In other words, it is unreliable with the USB hub. The hub has always worked fine while attached directly to the iMac, but because I want to be able to use the external HDs with my laptop as well, I have descided to get them in the network.
Does anyone know what causes this behavior?

Even the TC can work with external USB hub, it's not very reliable, and I would not recommend it. In theory, USB hub should be transparent, but I don't think the Apple engineers have ever fully tested it. I think when you have two or more drives connected to the TC, TC has problem allocate system resources correctly internally.
My recommendation for the external USB drive configuration is to have just ONE single drive, with ONE single partition, either FAT or HFS+. USB hub should be fine but restrict it to just one drive, use HUB hub for printer seems to be fine, but then you are only allowed one printer per TC anyway.
