Use of text in a movie clip

Hello
I am trying to use Text | New Text | Default Text at the beginning of a clip. I have managed to get the text to fade in but not to fade out. Is it possible to use both those techniques on the same text? I wondered, too, if it were possible to prolong the time that the text is visible on screen, because mine disappears quite quickly. It might appear, for example, for 3-4 seconds on a 12 second clip and I would like to be able to extend it a little.
Thanks!
Steve

I am not sure just have far into keyframing properties, in particular Opacity in your situation for Fade In Fade Out titles.
Prolonging the duration of the title at a fixed level is best achieved by keyframing the Opacity yourself.
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
In the absence of that information, generalizing
a. if you are going use the Toggle Animation route, then manual keyframing of the Opacity property would achieve that goal.
b. if you are going to go with the Ctrl click placement of Opacity keyframes on the Video track content's rubberband, then position those keyframes with the mouse cursor can be done to achieve the goal.

I do not know if you will ever need the following, but I include this information just in case. It relates to some shortcomings with use of the FadeIn FadeOut under specified conditions.

  • Dynamic text in different movie clip

    Inside scene one i have a movie clip that contains a movie
    clip that contains a dynamic text field. Also inside Scene one I
    have a different movie clip that contains a movie clip that
    contains a movie clip that contains a input text field. And I need
    for the user to type in to the input text field and see what they
    are typing show up in the dynamic text field. What would that
    script look like and where would I put it? Can anyone help
    please?

    hi!
    Lets say you have your dynamic clip on the same level as the
    movieclip containing your input field.
    _root.dynamic_texfield_name.text =
    _root.name_of_movieclip.input_texfield_name.text;
    If you need the dynamic textfield to be updated as soon as
    the user types something in the input field you can use a onChange
    handler.
    _root.name_of_movieclip.input_texfield_name.onChange =
    function(){
    _root.dynamic_texfield_name.text =
    _root.name_of_movieclip.input_texfield_name.text;
    }

  • Trying to change text in a movie clip

    i'm trying to replace text in a dynamic text field within a movie clip, and it seems as if it's treating it like static text. Is there a way around this?
    theBtn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, adjustText1);
    theBtn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, adjustText2);
    function adjustText1(e:MouseEvent):void
        textField1.text = "Foo"; // this works
    function adjustText2(e:MouseEvent):void
        theMC.getChildByName("textField2").text = "Bar"; // this doesn't
    It throws this error:
    1119: Access of possibly undefined property text through a reference with static type flash.display:DisplayObject.

    You don't need to use the "getChildByName" function.
    Try:
    theMC.textField2.text = "Bar";

  • Help - Using Cue Points to Play Movie Clips

    I have a FLV, into which I have placed about 8 cue points. I
    want a movie clip to play - (each movie clip is simply a snippet of
    supporting text for the video) - when a cue point is "hit". I am
    really quite baffled by most of the documentation that I have read
    so far.
    How can I do this? Many, many thanks for any support you can
    give.
    tommy53

    You can build out a menu by reading the cuePoints array in
    the NetStream.onMetadata handler, or by using the MetadataEvent
    with the FLVPlayback component (AS3). The simple thing for me to
    say is to refer to Chapter 9 of my new Flash Video book. :) (see
    link in my signature below.)

  • Editable text inside draggable movie clip

    I am dinamically creating textfields inside movie clips.
    Those movie clips are all dragabble (startDrag).
    The problem is that those textfields are supposed to be
    editable (input type) but once I attach startDrag to them, it's
    impossible for them to get the focus, hence they are not editable.
    I tried manually setting the focus on release, but it didn't work
    (Selection.setFocus(_root.movieclip.textfield)).
    Any help will be rrrrreally appreciated :D

    Well there does have to be some pixels in the bg clip! (Got
    to tease you just a bit, because I run into this ALL the time.)
    Some how folks don't take the method at its word.
    createEmptyMovieClip() does just that. It creates and empty movie
    clip. There are no pixels in it so there is nothing to onPress.
    Also I've got a little trick for you – you didn't ask
    for it, but it is still free. :)
    If you use the MovieClip class' method for
    createEmptyMovieClip() it will return a reference to the newly
    create clip. You can assign that reference to a variable and use it
    again and again. To my eye it makes the code easier to read and
    maintain. So your code would change to something like:
    var curClip=this.createEmptyMovieClip("mc"+i,1000+i);
    curClip.createEmptyMovieClip("bg",100);
    curClip.createTextField("myText",2,20,20,"auto","auto");
    curClip.myText.text="default value";
    curClip.bg.onPress=function(){
    this._parent.startDrag();
    and so on.
    Also I personally think getNextHighestDepth() is a disaster
    waiting to happen so I personally never use it.

  • How to load dynamic text inside a movie clip?

    hello all - i have a main stage where on the first frame my
    "home" movie clip displays. i did this by dragging/dropping, and
    then i put a stop action. all works fine.
    inside this home movie clip on the main stage, there are
    links to other movie clips. for example, to get to my faq's page -
    you click that button, then it takes you to frame 4 on my main
    stage, where my faq's movie clip (followed by stop action) has been
    dragged/dropped and displays properly.
    within the faq's movie clip this process is repeated, with
    buttons taking to you various pages (different frames where
    different movie clips play - all works fine).
    so now i want to add a dynamic text field within my faq's
    movie clip. i have read numerous tutorials where i have created the
    text file but i have not been able to display it with success
    within my faqs movie clip.
    here is some code that my dvd tutorial instructs me to place
    on main stage as i practice getting this to work:
    var myMCL:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader ();
    var myListener:Object = new Object();
    myMCL.addListener(myListener);
    var myLV:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
    myLV.onLoad = function (success:Boolean) {
    if (success) {
    _level5.loadedInfo.htmlText = myLV.info;
    } else {
    _level5.loadedInfo.text = "There has been an error loading
    the requested information. Please contact the webmaster.";
    and here is some code that i place on the faqs button within
    my main movie clip that takes me back to main stage and plays faq
    movie clip all successfully:
    on (release) {
    //Movieclip GotoAndPlay Behavior
    _root.gotoAndPlay("4");
    //End Behavior
    and finally, here is some code that i place within my faqs
    movie clip in an attempt to display my dynamic text within the faqs
    movie clip - so far unsuccessful:
    _level0.myLV.load("vars/faqs.txt");
    NOTE:
    i have published this to view - not working.
    i have my faqs text file starting as info=
    i have eliminated white space within my text file
    i am using flash 8 pro
    can anyone offer some sugestions? thanks!

    hmmmmm lemme double check as i seem to be a bit lost now.
    // this is my actions layer code on frame 4 of main timeline:
    stop();
    var myLV:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
    myLV.onLoad = function (success:Boolean) {
    if (success) {
    _level5.loadedInfo.htmlText = myLV.info;
    } else {
    _level5.loadedInfo.text = "There has been an error loading
    the requested information. Please contact the webmaster.";
    myLV.load("vars/faqs.txt");
    1. fyi - at frame 4 on main timeline, one layer beneath the
    actions layer where i dragged/dropped my faqs movie clip i gave my
    faqs movie clip an instance name of "mainfaqs" - although nowhere
    do i refer to this specific mc within my code.
    2. where would i replace/insert the following code?
    _level0.faq_mc.loadedInfo.text = myLV.info;
    3. i didn't know about embedding font but i saw the option
    and embedded it - still no results.
    4. i'm not sure how to do the following:
    _level5.loadedInfo.text ='test'; //although I would still
    change the path as above
    To see if your getting a return from the load call adn text
    file, use a trace statment before the success condition and see
    what it returns:
    trace(myLV);
    sorry to be such a pain - i really have looked around for
    answers through previous postings and i googled it and i've been
    taking instruction through lynda.com and dvds but i seem to be
    stuck here.... as always - thanks for your time

  • How do I use a variable to set movie clip properties?

    I'm building a simple contact page that allows users to
    select a city from a comboBox. I'd like to pass the selected
    comboBox data through a variable that controls a movie clip with
    the same name. (already on the stage)
    locationListener.change = function (loc_obj:Object) {
    var loc_mc = loc_obj.target.selectedItem.data;
    loc_mc._visible = true;
    So far this hasn't worked. I've tested hardcoding the movie
    clip instance name (Atlanta._visible = true) and it works, but I
    can't figure out why using the variable loc_mc won't trigger
    interaction with the movie clip.
    Something simple, I assume. Thanks in advance for any
    help.

    clbeech:
    I tried using your suggestion, but for some reason it doesn't
    recognize it as naming the movie clip instance. I traced the
    variable and confirmed that the correct value (Atlanta) is being
    passed.
    I assume this is because the variable is not declared as a
    MovieClip, but I can't figure out how to convert it inside the
    function.

  • Dynamic text in looping movie clip

    Hi,
    I am looping a movie clip which has a dynamic text box. I
    need to call data from XML and place the same in the Dynamic text
    box as per the duplicated movie clip. how do i do that.
    Thanks,
    Ayush

    on (release) {
    _parent.frontFields.topTextArch.ph2TopTextBrush._visible =
    false;
    That is the script attached to my button. I can see the text
    flash for a second when I push the button but it does'nt go away
    because the looping movie clip just continually goes back to the
    first frame and makes the ph2TopTextBrush text field visible again.
    I think I know what your saying. Your saying to attach a
    script to the first frame of the looping movie clip that would
    check to see which of the 3 dynamic text fields are visible. That
    would be perfect but I'm not sure how to do it.
    What would the script that I place on my button look like?
    What would the script in the first frame of the looping movie clip
    look like?

  • Using cue points to acrivate movie clips

    I'm trying to write a simple piece of ActionScript that I can
    adapt and re-use easily. (I'm not very good at programming and I've
    been finding the "help" information very confusing.) I've devised
    quite an elegant solution, if only I could get it to work!.
    I'm using a single frame loop with an onEnterFrame
    construction that deletes itself when the flv has finished playing.
    I've set up a movie clip with various start points for animations
    to be activated at cue points. I'm testing for the cue points in
    the same frame, storing previous cue point names so that each cue
    point triggers the corresponding animation once only. I know the
    main logic works because I've tested it with trace statements to
    prove that the cue points are actually being reached. The problem
    is that the goToAndPlay instructions don't seem to activate the
    movie clip as intended.
    My best guess is that the stop action on the self-looping
    frame is also stopping the movie clip as soon as it starts. Even if
    that is true, I don't know how to solve the problem. And I'm sure
    one of you much more clever people will know better. Here's the
    code. Any suggestions?

    You can build out a menu by reading the cuePoints array in
    the NetStream.onMetadata handler, or by using the MetadataEvent
    with the FLVPlayback component (AS3). The simple thing for me to
    say is to refer to Chapter 9 of my new Flash Video book. :) (see

  • Using Events To Play Another Movie Clip

    Dear Readers:
    I have a set of buttons in my flash movie that, when a mouse
    cursor passes over it, another movie clip on the stage causes a
    layer with text to gradually appear from below. It pops up, so to
    speak, and eventually stops, displaying the text related to the
    button in full view.
    Passing over a different button causes the text layer to move
    downward, slowly disappear off the stage, then reappear in the same
    manner with text associated with that latest button. Its fairly
    simple and works fine, as long as the user waits patiently for the
    text layer to scroll down and back up before passing over another
    button. See code below.
    However, if the user decides to quickly pass over multiple
    buttons (before the text layer reaches the top), the event handler
    is coded such that if the mouseover event occurs BEFORE the text
    layer reaches the top, the text layer starts over at the bottom, so
    the transition is not smooth. Imagine the text layer just about to
    reach the top, when the mouseover event occurs, now the text layer
    starts over from the bottom. Very choppy.
    I'd like to grab the current frame of the text layer movie
    clip when the mouseover event occurs, and have the layer move back
    down from there, reach the bottom, then come back up, rather than
    starting from the bottom. Any help in coming would be great. Thanks
    in advance.

    yourI = setInterval(f,t) starts a loop. it repeatedly calls
    the function f() every t milliseconds until a clearInterval(yourI)
    is executed.
    the most common problem that occurs with setInterval() is
    executing it twice (or more) with no intervening clearInterval().
    when that happens all hell breaks loose and the swf will call the
    function much more rapidly than intended and can not be (easily)
    stopped no matter how many clearInterval() statements you try and
    execute.
    the easiest way to prevent that problem is to execute a
    clearInterval() just BEFORE all setInterval() statements. it
    doesn't hurt anything to (try and) clear and interval that doesn't
    exist and occasionally it'll stop the seemingly bizarre problems
    that occur with out-of-control intervals:
    clearInterval(yourI);
    yourI=setInterval(f,t);

  • Using an array to assign movie clips to buttons

    Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!
    I've got 5 movie clip buttons.  When a user rolls over a button, I want one movie clip to play. When a user clicks on that button, an alternate movie clip plays. I'm trying to use an array to assign certain movie clips to certain buttons and actions, but I'm not doing something quite right. I can get one button to work correctly, but then am having issues getting the other buttons to work.
    Here is the code I have:
    var currentPage:MovieClip;
    var currentScreen:MovieClip;
    var prevPage:MovieClip;
    var currentButton:MovieClip;
    var arrNavigation:Array = [{button:m1_mcButton, page:m1_mc, screen:s1_mc},
       {button:m2_mcButton, page:m2_mc, screen:s2_mc}]
    for(var i=0;i<arrNavigation.length;i++){
    arrNavigation[i].button.buttonMode=true;
    arrNavigation[i].button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, onButtonOver);
    arrNavigation[i].button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, onButtonOut);
    arrNavigation[i].button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onButtonClick);
    function onButtonOver(e:MouseEvent):void
    for(i=0;i<arrNavigation.length;i++) {
    if(arrNavigation[i].button == e.currentTarget)
    currentPage = arrNavigation[i].page;
    currentPage.gotoAndStop("over");
    function onButtonOut(e:MouseEvent):void{
    currentPage.gotoAndStop("out");
    function onButtonClick(e:MouseEvent):void{
    for(i=0;i<arrNavigation.length;i++) {
    if(arrNavigation[i].button == e.currentTarget)
    currentScreen = arrNavigation[i].screen;
    arrNavigation[i].screen.gotoAndPlay("over");

    if your buttons are movieclips, use:
    var currentPage:MovieClip;
    var currentScreen:MovieClip;
    var prevPage:MovieClip;
    var currentButton:MovieClip;
    var arrNavigation:Array = [{button:m1_mcButton, page:m1_mc, screen:s1_mc},
       {button:m2_mcButton, page:m2_mc, screen:s2_mc}]
    for(var i=0;i<arrNavigation.length;i++){
    arrNavigation[i].button.buttonMode=true;
    arrNavigation[i].button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, onButtonOver);
    arrNavigation[i].button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, onButtonOut);
    arrNavigation[i].button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onButtonClick);
    arrNavigation[i].button.ivar=i;
    function onButtonOver(e:MouseEvent):void
    currentPage = arrNavigation[e.currentTarget.ivar].page;
    currentPage.gotoAndStop("over");
    function onButtonOut(e:MouseEvent):void{
    currentPage.gotoAndStop("out");
    function onButtonClick(e:MouseEvent):void{

  • Using one instance of a Movie Clip to load Graphics from library

    Hi all,
    another question... How would i go about loading a variable into a movie clip and have it pull different graphics from my library at different spots in the main timeline???
    thanks!
    Patrick

    Hi NED! thank you for all your help so far!!!
    I was wondering about the flexability of loading movies into a movie clip.
    Currently, thanks to your help i am well able to load one movie into a movie "loader" clip, but thought maybe there is a way to load additional movie clips into that same "loader" clip, as i am starting to accumulate several different graphics that i need to have be inside movie clips so that i can make them change colors on the same frame when needed.
    i shot from the hip and tried this code, but didnt have any luck:
    mc_LCD_loader.attachMovie("hilight", "g", 1), ("header", "X", 1);
    mc_LCD_loader.g._x = 0;
    mc_LCD_loader.g._y = 1000;
    mc_LCD_loader."X"._x = 0;
    mc_LCD_loader."X"._y = 1000;
    - - - where "hilight" is the identifier name of a given movie clip and "header" is the identifier of a given movie clip in the same library...
    "hilight" loads fine
    i dont fully understand what "g" means to the identifier...
    i am just unsure of how or if it is even possible to load another MC into the same MC Loader...
    is it possible? if so could you give me a hint?
    thank you!

  • Movie clip inside a movie clip

    Hi everybody,
    I'm creating a slideshow with Flash, like the  ones done with Powerpoint. I would like to create a movie clip inside  another movie clip, that is, say I have a clip called button1, and when I  click it, frame number 2 in this clip is displayed, and then more  information appears. Inside this frame 2, there are other clips, for  example an X button to close and return to frame number 1 in the clip  button1, as the image shows:
    What I have done is convert the button1 text into a movie  clip, and assign an action to it:
    on (press){
        gotoAndStop(2);
    When frame 2 is displayed, I would like to  click to the X-button to get back to frame number1, so what I've done  is, again, convert it into a movie clip and assign the following action:
    on (press){
        _root.gotoAndStop(1);
    But this doesn't work. I've been trying as  well changing other things, but no way... At first I thought it had  something to do with the _root or _parent, but now it looks as when  using gotoAndStop in the "parent" button (button1), no actions work for  the "child" buttons.
    I've loaded the fla and the swf files here, just in case  someone would like to check.
    Thank you very much in advance for your help.  I've been checking other posts, but apparently I couldn't find the  appropriate info.

    "_root" is only used to reference the very first level of your flash file. Right now you are telling flash to go to the second frame in your root timeline but you want to go to the second frame in your button1 timeline.
    Change the code that is on the X-button to
    on(press){
         gotoAndStop(1);
    Remove the "_root" and it should work.
    If it still doesn't work, make sure the button has an instance name of "button1" and use this code.
    on(press){
         _root.button1.gotoAndStop(1);
    This is using "_root.button1" as the 'address' of your movieclip and it wont matter where the code is.

  • Turning movie clips on/off with AS3

    Hi everyone ... I need help! I'm relatively new to Flash so hopefully I'll be using the correct terminology here so as not to further confuse any would-be problem solvers out there!
    I am working on an interactive map that allows the user to click on different categories and see them highlighted on the map. (For example - if you click 'retail' all the retail locations on the map will be highlighted.) I have several different categories - 6 to be exact - and I would like the user to be able to click on multiple categories at once, so they can see where residential areas are in relation to offices, for example.
    What I've done is create what looks like a 'toolbar' to one side with buttons for each category. (initially I was using actual flash buttons which redirected to a later frame showing only the highlighted buildings, and then the user could click a 'back' button to get back to  the toolbar.) I have now made each of these text objects into movie clips, and when I double click on the movie clip I have 10 frames. One is actions, obviously, one is the text itself (currently using TLF text) and the third is a .png file, which I've set up as a movie clip and tweened so that it goes from 0% alpha to 100% alpha within the 10 frames.
    In order to get the SWF to function where I'd be able to click on/off one of the categories more than once, I had to set the initial TLF text as 'read only' (when clicked this goes to frame 10 and stops, leaving the buildings highlighted). and the final TLF text as 'selectable' (when clicked, this one goes back to frame 1, where the buildings are not highlighted).
    Unfortunately, when I have all 6 of these movie clips in the SWF, if I click on more than one at a time, I must click them 'off' in the reverse order. Otherwise they will not turn off. EX - if I turn on 'restaurants, hotels, residential' in that order, I have to turn them off in the order of 'residential, hotels, restaurants'
    Does anyone have any tips to make this simpler? I don't know if there is a better way to have these categories 'turn on' other than using the TLF text. I hope one of you smart Flash experts can help me out ASAP!!!

    that's a task much easier to do using actionscript rather than use the timeline.  each location or parent location (if you want one parent for retail and one for residential etc) could have two keyframes.  one for highlighted locations, the other for non-highlighted.  you can timeline tween between the two keyframes, if you want.
    your main timeline would not change frames.  clicking the retail toggle button would cause all retail locations to tween to the highlighted frame.  clicking it again, it should cause the retail locations to tween to the non-highlighted frame.
    likewise for you other buttons and other locations.
    this setup will remove the complications caused by having various combinations of buttons toggled on and off.
