Can I use the Oracle 8.0.5/8.0.6 Client with a Oracle 8.1.7
Server?

You can use the older version of the client, but you may not be
able to use/access the newer features of the 8.1.7 Server
(introduced since 8.0.5 of the Server). Also, the 8.0.5 client
was desupported on 01-MAY-2001, so there won't be any bug fixes
if you have problems.

Dear Buddies,
To the best of my knowledge I understand that Oracle Client is a minimal package to get connected to the Oracle Server in order to access the database. Corrrect me if I am wrong.
I have installed it based on the steps given in http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html
and also other sites.
How do I start using it? If SQL Plus, all I have to do is launch the SQL Plus, get connected and start using the database. How should I use this Instant Client? Please guide me. Is it compulsary to use it with SQL Plus? or some other tools?

but it doesn't help me as well.

You need a client program that uses Oracle client to connect to an Oracle Database.
One such program is "sqlplus", it is the command line interface.
Its usage is described extensively in

Are you trying to connect to SQL Server from your Oracle database (i.e. create a database link in Oracle to SQL Server)? Or are you trying to connect to SQL Server using your Oracle client software (i.e. SQL*Plus)?
The former just requires Heterogeneous Services with Generic Connectivity. The latter is functionality that has been depricated and probably no longer works in your environment.

Error while using oracle client

I agree to all what you have written .But as you said we often have client server co-existing on the same hardware platform and also i have additionally installed an oracle client .I agree that the TCP connections is via Net8 (Sql*Net) /ODBC etc. But my question is i want to connect to both my XE server and my other database servers (Production) using a single client (since m having 2 clients , one that came along with the XE database and the other which i have explicitly installed) ,I get the following error
SP2-0667: Message file sp1<lang>.msb not found
SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory .Despite setting the path and ORACLE_HOME environment variables , the error persists.

Windows host? Which version, xp? Which "2nd client" version, instant client?
Double check the environment variables and %PATH%. Try changing directory to the particular client .../bin directory and run sqlplus from there, the client program you want may not be the client program you're getting.
%ORACLE_HOME% also needs to be pre-pended to %PATH%, with that second client it might be helpful to set up a .bat file with proper settings. Saves having to retype stuff which will also be typo-prone, i.e. in ct2.bat:
set ORACLE_HOME=C:\ora\<folder\path>
set PATH=%ORACLE_HOME%;%PATH%

Can I use oracle client 10g express to work on oracle 11g database

I have installed an oracle DB 11g, I also installed oracle client 10g express edition to create users and tables. I noticed that the users I created can't connect to db with error message "Error java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied" and tables I created can't access from my program. I get error message "Error java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist". I start to suspect that client 10g express edition can't use with oracle 11g. Please help.

Using Oracle pooling in 10.2 with ingres datasource

Hi;
I'm trying to use Oracle Pooling in 10.2 using OracleConnectionCacheManager class with ingres database.
I got the following exception:
java.sql.SQLException: Invalid Oracle URL specified
The URL i'm using is:
jdbc:edbc://HOST:TM7/DATABASE
When i'm using the same URL with Class.forname() it's working fine!
I don't know what i'm missing.

currently I am facing a situation where I cannot connect to oracle 10g server running on 10.1.0.4 version.
I tried using sql plus and toad (with oracle client 10.1.0.3) but get error during login where I can get a connection.

You mean the local port at the client. It's used for the entire connection, not just the response. You should let the system allocate this rather than trying to control it yourself. Otherwise you restrict yourself to only one connection to the ORB from the client (e.g. no multithreading).
You should arrange with your firewall to allow anyclient port to connect to the ORB.

ICal 10.6 client no longer syncing with 10.5 iCal server

Searched the forums and haven't found anyone with an answer yet.
We upgraded all our laptops to 10.6. The server is still at 10.5, running CalDAV server.
Since the upgrade of the iCal clients, they are no longer accessing the iCal server. Any ideas what settings need to be tweaked in the iCal clients to have them see and read/write to their accounts on the 10.5 iCal server?

the same is happening to me.
All my cals have been syncing just fine. Upgraded my iphone os5. upgraded lion on laptop. And for some reason, now i'm opening ical today and trying to edit, i am suddenly getting URL errors. Also i cannot find a way in the new ical (with lion) to unsubscribe from things.
My iphone seems to be updating ok as it's syncing from the google cal server... but if i want to add or edit anything to my google cals in ical, it's not letting me do anything.
Any ideas anyone ?
