Use Pages for template to commercial printer

I created a 20 page, 7x7", perfect bound book in Blurb.com which is primarily pictures with a small amount of text.  It has generated a lot of interest since it is very specific to the area in which I live.  A local business wants to stock it and claims it can sell "tons" which is appealing.   The problem I have is getting the unit price down to a reasonable amount.  Even buying in bulk from Blurb I am paying about $8 a unit.  I'm exploring commercial printers and if the pricing seems reasonable I will need to transfer the book to a non-proprietary software.  Pages is an obvious contender but I'm wondering if folks can share their experiences using Pages for this type of project.  I have Photoshop Elements but that seems cumbersome.
Any comments are appreciated.  Thanks.

To print your book commercially you will need to reproduce the color faithfully and with all bitmap elements at 300dpi.
Frankly that is difficult to do from Pages which is designed to print to a users' desktop printers and renders certain parts of the output at 72dpi when exported to pdf which is the usual format for commercial printers.
1. See if you can find a commercial printer who will accept a Pages file to run through their RIP directly
2. Always talk to your printer about what they require and what is achievable
3. Commercial offset works off a different price structure than digital printing. Much of the cost is up front and the greater the print run the more the price comes down. Find out how many books you'll have to print before you beat the $8 you have been quoted by blurb.
4. As compensation commercial offset, when done correctly, is markedly better quality than digital
5. Please please please don't use Photoshop Elements or Photoshop they are not DTP software and rendering all your vector objects and text as bitmaps is such a bad idea that of course everyone is doing it now

    Have you moved Pages from its installed location? Or just dragged a copy to your current system?
    It can't find some of its resources apparently.

  • I have been using pages for months and now I can not get it to open any templet or previous document to open?

    I have been using pages for months and now I can not get it to open any templet or previous document to open?

    A little more information would be helpful.
    What version of Pages are you using? The latest is 4.1 with the update released on July 20. In Snow Leopard 10.6.8 you need at least Pages 4.0.5. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.
    If you are running at least Pages 4.0.5 & haven't made any other changes to your Mac since Pages was last working correctly, the likely culprit is corrupt preferences. Go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences & delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plst & restart Pages.

  • Pages '09 Templated Forms Not Printing in Pages 5.5.2

    I have an older Macbook Pro (circa 2009) running OSX 10.10.2 and Pages 5.5.2.  I am connected to a Canon MX320 printer.  While running my iWorks 09 version of Pages, I created a template that allowed me to print customizable checks.  I setup a template with customized settings (2.75" X 6.0" paper, 0" margins on all sides).  I would open the check "form", enter the payee, amounts, date, memo, then place the blank check into the printer and the check would print.   Since I upgraded OSX and Pages, my template no longer works.  The blank check slides through the printer with no printing being done.  I have tried changing the orientation and paper dimensions but I am unable to print with the defined paper size.  It will print with a larger sized paper (it doesn't seem to recognize the small form size).  I seek possible solutions.

    Then if you have exhausted all possible tests and printer drivers, go with what works, use Pages '09 and get a bonus 100+ features.
    Or switch to another application that does the job and has a long term future (hint not Pages 5).

  • Can you change the currency formatting in a cell using Pages for iPhone?

    Since my MacBook Pro is grumpy this morning, I downloaded Pages for my iPhone and then purchased the app "Inspiration Set" which contains a group of templates for use in Pages. I think the original templates were built on a Mac.
    I have opened up the template, changed all the info to build my invoice, but they have a group of cells set for pounds instead of dollars. Does the iPhone version of Pages allow me to reformat these cells as dollars, instead of pounds?
    My Mac is STILL not starting up, so I HAVE to be able to find a solution using the iPhone ONLY...
    Thanks for any help,
    -Chris

    Guy,
    Update: I wrote the following before putting on my glasses and realizing that you were asking about Pages rather than Numbers. Maybe the same procedure will apply.
    See these nice instructions.
    In short: To select a currency symbol, tap Currency, and then tap the symbol you want.

  • Only the first page for a particular site prints. All other sites are fine.

    I'm running Firefox 10.0.2 on Windows 7 SP1 and when I try to print the web page of the affected URL ( http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Connect-to-another-computer-using-Remote-Desktop-Connection ), only the first page is printed. It prints fine in IE 9. I tried printing in safe mode and it still only prints the first page. I only tried printing it once, after that I used print preview alone. I used print preview on a dozen other sites and it works fine. By the way, on the web page I'm trying to print you must "Show All" at the bottom to expand all of the text. It's just this one web page. Can someone else with a similar setup try print preview on this page for me? I just want to know. I printed it using IE. Interestingly, if you scale the print preview down enough, all of the text shows up. Thanks...

    Well, I've made a little progress. I saved the web page source locally and then added the following HTML snippet to the <head> section:
    <style type="text/css">
    div
    page-break-before:always;
    </style>
    When I display this, the "Show all" does not work, but the page text is still long enough to do "Print Preview" and expect more than one page. The result is a blank first page (expected) and then ALL of the page text is printed on the next two pages.
    But I think you are correct "the-edmeister" in saying that Firefox may have a problem when the DIV tag spans more than one page. The reason is that the third page only contains the footer, so I can't say for sure if the whole DIV block was printed. But at least the footer did show up this time.
    If I can get the "Show all" block to expand then maybe that question will be answered. Any thoughts?

  • Spell checking in other languages using Pages for iPad

    Does anybody know how to spell check a document in a language other than the primary language? For example the iPad is using English but I want to write a letter in German.
    This was simple to do using Pages on the Mac. So far I'm stumped.

    Did you actually try this with Pages?  In the past this app had a bug where switching the keyboard did not work, you had to switch the OS language, as was stated earlier in this discussion.  If that is now fixed, that is good to hear.

  • How to use only for scanning without installing printer cartridge

    I have an old all in one and want to use it only for scanning without installing printer cartridge. I get the red signal of no i9nk and "E" msg in copy no button. If I give scanning request from HP solutions centre I get an error message " An error occured while communicating with thescanning device"

    Hello , Welcome to the HP Community! I understand that you are trying to scan on your HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One Printer without having cartridges installed. I'd like to shed a little light on this for you. Some HP printers are able to scan without ink installed, but most do not. If the cartridge lights on the product are blinking and there is an "E" in the copies window, then the printer is in an error state and will not function until cartridges are installed. If the printer is in an error state, that would describe the message you are getting that "An error occured while communicating with the scanning device", as the printer would not respond when prompted by the software. You can check the blinking light combination on the printer and follow the steps in this document to resolve the error state and continue using the device.Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet F300 All-in-One Printer Series Hope this helps!Thanks so much for posting.

  • Preparing images for Dreamweaver cs3, using InDesign for templates

    Hi, I'm about to start putting all my files together for my
    website, but need to know in what form to save my images. I know
    they should be jpegs or gifs, but what resolution, and what size?
    Should I size them close to the size I want to see them on my
    website? For example if I want to make a little linked (like a
    thumbnail that you click on) image of a painting, and have the full
    size image of that painting open up, should I save that image in
    two different sizes?
    Also, the tutorial I'm learning from says I can make a
    template for use in Dreamweaver, with Photoshop or Illustrator, but
    I'd rather use InDesign. Can I use InDesign files as templates in
    Dreamweaver? If so, in what form should I save them?

    > Can I
    > use InDesign files as templates in Dreamweaver?
    it won't be of any practical use, except to print out and use
    as a guide.
    on the images, make them the PIXEL size they need to be in
    the web page.
    If you aren't sure yet what exact size they will be, make
    them a bit
    oversize. Then after changing the html display size of them
    in dreamweaver
    (click on the image, then press shift key and drag corner of
    image to
    resize) you can jot down the pixel size shown in the dw
    properties
    inspector, and resize the image in an image editor to those
    pixel
    dimensions. For a resolution, just use 72 ppi as a number to
    put there.
    It's the pixel dimension that matters.

  • Using Pages for e-books - am I doing something wrong here?

    Hi!
    I wrote 5 e-books with a total of around 1.500 pages in Pages. Great program
    Now I wanted to apply a template but in a mix og horror and frustration, I'm not sure if I got all this wrong.
    Can't I apply a template on a document already written? I bought a template with 10-12 different page setups, looking really nice.
    It's like I can only add new pages and move my text to them, page by page and I'm NOT going to do that with 1.500+ pages :s
    Am I doing this wrong? Is Pages the wrong choise for this?
    If not, what program would be the one to use for setting up my books?
    Thanks in advance for any feedback

    Pages templates do not work in this way, they have fairly poor templating and styling methods.
    If it is simply a matter of styling a lot of word processing you could open the previous work in Pages *Word Processing mode* and replace each style with an edited version of itself. Replacing colors is not so easy and layout extremely difficult.
    Pages does not have the efficient keyboard methods of applying styles, that more capable DTP packages have. So applying the styles is tedious.
    Even with styling unless you had been extremely careful dividing your paragraph, character and list styles you will likely have a lot of manual work to do. Pages does not have a method that I know of to show unstyled text that would drop through the cracks of any changes.
    If you did the previous work in *Layout mode*, you may as well start from scratch, there would be too much manual adjustments etc to make it worthwhile.
    To get the sophisticated updating of firstly styled text, you would need a DTP program that allows direct exchange of styles. To have the ability to change layout you really would need Adobe InDesign.

  • Using Pages for iPad, how to replace images

    Hi.
    I'm new to Pages.  I have created a Pages document with text and photos.  I'd like to create more documents using the same basic format.  I'd like to be able to click on a photo and choose a new image without the image size changing in the document.   I thought I had tried this from a pages template on my friend's ipad but I can't figure it out now that I have my own ipad.   Any help appreciated.

    These are merge fields.
    A double tap on them selects all and then you can type whatever you want in their place.

  • Can you use pages for OS on IPad offline?

    Can you use the pages app on the IPad offline?

    If you have Pages on more than one device and have iCloud set to sync Pages your documents will appear on all devices. You need a Wi-Fi or cellular connection for the sync to happen. But one the document is on a device you do not need to be connected to the internet to open or edit the documents.
    One thing you do need to be carful about if you have Pages on two devices, like an iPad and iPhone, is that things might get confused if you are offline and make different edits to the same document on each device,

  • Using XLIFF for template translation

    Hello,
    What I have done
    I have RTF template I use to generate XLIF. I have inserted my translation in this xlif file.
    <file source-language="FR-FR" target-language="en-gb" datatype="XDO" original="orphan.xlf" product-version="orphan.xlf" product-name="">
    <source>Fiche Projet à fin [&amp;1:ARRETE]</source>
    <target>Project details to [&amp;1:ARRETE]</target>
    We are using BI Publisher API to generate PDF reports. I have added
    processor.setData(dataXmlInput);
    processor.setTemplate(xslTemplateInput);
    processor.setXLIFF(xliffFile);
    processor.setLocale ("en-gb");
    ByteArrayOutputStream pdfOutput = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    processor.setOutput(pdfOutput);
    processor.setOutputFormat(toFOProcessorFormat(outputFileFormat));
    The program runs fine but no translation is done.
    This is pretty urgent? Can anybody help or give recommendations on the way to use it, to set locale...?
    Thanks in advance

    Apparently this is not a widely used method.
    Can anyone tell me what is the best way to implement multilingual reporting using BI Publisher API, should we duplicate RTF templates?

  • I have been using Pages for several years to do a newsletter. Now, suddenly they won't open.

    Cannot open documents in Pages.

    You have multiple versions of Pages on your Mac.
    When you get the "index.xml file is missing" warning that is because you have opened a newer version document with an older version of Pages.
    The difference between the versions is obvious from different screen appearance to different icons (blue inkbottle/orange document), as well as stated different version numbers.
    right click on the file and choose which version you wish to open the file with.
    You may have up to 3 versions of Pages on your Mac all of which use different file formats but have the same file extension, .pages.
    Pages 5 will at minimum alter and and at worst damage Pages '09 files and can not open Pages '08 files at all. It also has over 100 missing features and an extremely incompatible file format. Pages 5.5.2 creates files that can only be opened by Pages 5.5.2 running only on Yosemite and iOS 8.

  • Am trying to get my Ipad1 to work via AirPrint using Pages and a Canon MG8250 printer. My iMac works ok  but the iPad attempt results in the printer trying to use the rear paper tray rather than the lower paper drawer. All drivers and firmware are latest

    My set up is Imac + Ipad1 + canon MG8250 printer. Wireless network. airprint in use and functions fine with the Imac. The Ipad initiates printing ok but always faults out with the error 'Printer out of paper' because it tries to use the rear paper tray (special paper ) instead of the paper drawer.

    Johnmac@47-
    Could the iMac have printed something that required use of the rear tray?  That might have reset the printer's default.  Look in the printer manual to see if it has a setting to change the default paper tray.  (Note that the iMac does not use AirPrint, it uses the printer's native printing language.)
    Your problem may be a flaw in the Canon AirPrint implementation.  I suggest you report it to Apple at <iPad Feedback>, as well as to Canon.  There may be a simple correction that can be made to either the next iOS update or to the Canon printer firmware.
