User Account Login Offsite

Hi,
I'm new to managing servers. I am looking at setting up an imac with mac os x server (snow leopard).
If i was to configure multiple computers (laptops & desktops) to login with network accounts. What is the protocol for laptops when offsite? if they have an internet conenction when offsite can they login to their network accounts? If not can you configure a sync of their local & network home directories?
Thanks in advance

Yes, this is entirely possible - it's called Mobile home directories. Users log in with a cached copy of their account credentials, and whenever their client is in reach of the server they automatically update and sync home directory data.
It's covered at length in chapter 8 of the Mac OS X Server User Management manual.

Hi, just a quick question. Is it possible to make a user account login name case sensitive? Currently I can log on using upper or lower case for the login name however I would rather only the exact login name could be used.

I had already answered with example.

You can make only user account login case sensitive but not password.

  • On the iMac user account login screen, what does the checkmark mean?

On my iMac, I have 3 user accounts. Sometimes I have noticed that next to 1 of the 3 account names that I will sometimes see a small white check mark in a red circle. What does this mean?

I just received the same login for the first time in a while.  I had left my MacBook Pro asleep for several days and then turned it back on and the wakeup/login screen presented a similar red circle with a white check mark inside.  Did you find an answer?  I created a new post today to see if anyone has had anything similar, not sure if it's firevault or not confirming id...

  • User Account Login: Goes back to login Window

I have 4 accounts set up on an iMac (10.6). One of the accounts has suddenly stopped working. After typing in the password at the login screen, it looks as if the mac is trying to log in, the screen then turns blue, and the login screen is then displayed.
The other accounts all work fine, and I can log in and log out without issue.
    Any ideas?

I too have this frustrating problem. My iMac has three accounts - the login on my main one (an admin account) fails as described. I've tried many possible fixes having read about what could well be the same issue elsewhere on this forum, but no luck. I've rebooted many times; I've used a different account to change the malfunctioning account's password; I've checked the hard drive has plenty of space (it has more than 40% free); I've verified the hard drive (all fine); I've verified and repaired the disk permissions (a few were wrong); I've checked there are not too many files on the desktop; I have changed the UUID (in advanced options of Accounts) for the misbehaving account; and I have tried deleting a number of possible culprits from the Library/Preferences folder including com.apple.finder.plist, com.apple.sidebarlists.plist, com.apple.DiskUtility.plist and com.apple.loginitems.plist.
The problem appeared in stages. At first I could log in but Finder was displayed varying signs of corruptions: sidebar icons absent, the grey bar across the top of the screen not appearing, icons missing from the dock, programs in the dock not starting... A couple of times I managed to log in and found things working fine. But now I can't get in at all - I just see that blue screen for a moment and then get sent back to the login screen.
I wonder whether the some application that's run on start-up is to blame. I looked though com.apple.loginitems.plist for a possible culprit. I saw that it starts iTunesHelper, Kodak Easy Share Wireless Listener, Xmarks for Safari, GrowlHelperApp, and Dropbox. Finding Kodak Easy Share Wireless Listener was a surprise to me - I've uninstalled that. I wonder whether iTunes might be the culprit, as I think I upgraded to a new version of iTunes (9.1.1) shortly before the problems started. But it's hard to tell - I upgraded a number of programs (probably including the OS from 10.6.2) around when these problems began. I would like to try preventing other programs from starting up on log-in, but I don't know how to do that - I don't know how to edit com.apple.loginitems.plist by hand and can't see how to change it through the Accounts page accessed through another user... and anyway just deleting it didn't work. I'm reluctant to uninstall the other applications.
At this point I'm out of ideas and would be grateful for suggestions.

  • Pwpolicy won't disable a local user account login!

Hello everyone. I have two macs. One mac is running OS 10.4, the other is 10.5. Neither of these computers are remotely managed nor are they bound to an open directory server. I have one local administrative account on each computer I want to leave on the computer but disable login access. I'm trying to use the command:
    pwpolicy -a shortNameOfAdministratorAccount -u shortNameOfAccountToChange -setpolicy "isDisabled=1"
When I enter this in the terminal it asks for my administrative password for the account specified in shortNameOfAdministratorAccount. Once I enter it and press return the command returns no errors, just returns to the prompt. However, I can go back to the login window, click on the account I'm trying to disable, type in the password, and I can log in. I've tried running this command under different accounts, a root shell, etc.... Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • How Can I Login To Multiple User Accounts Simultaneously

I am using an Intel iMac (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with 1GB of memory and 10.4.11. I have Fast User Switching enabled. I restart the Mac every morning. Then I login to a second user account. While at work, I access these accounts via VNC.
Sometimes I forget to login to the second user account. I do it from work via VNC, which sometimes causes complications.
Does OSX support simultaneous multiple user account login? If not, is there a work-around solution such as an AppleScript? This would provide a time savings to me, as well as a convenience if I forgot to login to the second user account before leaving home.
    Thank you.
    Kurt R. Todoroff

Seems to me, in another discussion, the simple Fast User Switching does not
do much really fast or automatically; there are a few faster steps than having
to log into each and every account change (even when FUS is enabled) so
this later development sounds a little more automatic, esp over a distance.
Is there a third party app or valid script that an do the multiple logins automatic
after the first-run; so passwords need not be re-entered, and the screen can just
switch over "fast" to another open account window, ready to go to work in there?
    {And not just a keyboard shortcut to save a few little steps, overall.}
    Whichever way the road turns...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • ISE Guest-Account Single-User Multiple Logins

    Hello,
How to make ISE to only allow  one guest-user account login at a time.    the actual issue I have is- when I give one Guest user-id to someone, he can circulate that user-id with others and multiple unauthorized guests can use that single user-id to connect to Guest-portal
    Anyway to restrict that ?

Restricting Guests to One Active Network Session
You can restrict guests to having only one device connected to the network at a time. When guests attempt to connect with a second device, the currently-connected device is automatically disconnected from the network.
This is a global setting affecting all Guest portals.
Step 1 Choose Administration > Web Portal Management > Settings > Guest > Portal Policy.
Step 2 Check the Allow only one guest session per user option.
    Step 3 Click Save .

  • User Account problem - bounce's back to Login screen

Here's a new one for ya. My 24" iMac (OSX 10.6.2) will allow login on some but not all user accounts. I currently have 5 different user accounts on my iMac (we are a family of 5). No problems ever with logging in until SL upgrade. Now 2 of the 5 user accounts act strange. When you click an account everything appears fine, then you see a quick flash of blue screen and you return to the main user account/login screen. I can select any of the 3 other accounts and everything works as it should. I repaired permissions and that didn't help. Any ideas?

In System Preferences > Accounts, for each account you can assign "login items".
These will start automatically when the account logs in. If there is something that
is not compatible with Snow Leopard, it may be causing problems.
Easiest thing to do to verify this is to remove them.
You will need administrator access to the accounts panel to make the change.

  • When I login to second user account I get a blank white screen.

Just updated to 10.8.3, was also having issues that seemed to be related to Spotlight and TM backups. Issues on my main user account seem to have been resolved, but I have not reactivated Spotlight or TM yet.
When I try to login to my wife's user account, it just hangs on a white screen. I've tried repairing user permissions, and also resetting PRAM and NVRAM. Disk verify checks out fine.

    Library/Fonts:
[A hole bunch, removed to shorten post...]
Does the problem account also have a lot of fonts in the home folder? That could be the reason for a login failure. Otherwise see below.
Please read this whole message carefully, especially the warnings, before doing anything.
    1. The changes to your configuration suggested here should be considered provisional; they may not solve your problem, or they may remove functionality that you find useful. If a third-party system modification that you want to keep is causing the problem, seek help from its developer.
    2. WARNING: Back up all data now if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state, even if it becomes unbootable. If you’re not sure you can do that, STOP — DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING. If you’re dissatisfied with the results of the procedure suggested below, restore from your backup. I will not be responsible for the consequences, and I will not be able to help, if you ignore this warning.
    3. You should either remove or update the following system modification(s), if an update is available from the developer:
    N/A
and definitely remove at least the following:
    Logitech Control Center
    † PeerGuardian
    Hotspot Shield
    † Conduit
    4. Whatever you remove must be removed completely, and (unless otherwise specified in this message) the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job. I can't be more specific, because I don't install such things myself. Please do your own research.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Again, please don't ask me to do this research for you. You can do it better than I can, because I haven't installed the product and I may not even know what it is.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.
    5. I recommend that you never reinstall the modifications marked with a dagger (†) above, if any. If your problem is resolved after uninstalling all the above modifications and rebooting, but you still want to use some of those not marked with a dagger, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, testing carefully after each step. Keep in mind that system modifications may be incompatible with each other or with future OS X updates, so it may not be clear which one is at fault.
    6. If you still have problems after making the suggested changes and rebooting, post again. Remember: if you don’t like the results of this procedure, you can undo it by restoring from the last backup you made before you started.
You installed the Conduit spyware. To remove it, back up all data, then follow the instructions on this page:
    Help Center | Community Toolbar
If those instructions don't work, proceed as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Conduit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). From the Finder menu bar, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder…
Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A Finder window should open with a folder named "Conduit" selected. If it does, delete the selected item.
    Repeat with this line:
    /Applications/Toolbars
Now you're deleting a folder named "Toolbars". You may be prompted for your login password. Next, copy this line:
    /Library
Select Go to Folder… again and paste. Don't delete the Library folder. Delete only the following items inside it, if they exist.
    Application Support/Conduit
    InputManagers/CTLoader
    LaunchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist
    ScriptingAdditions/ct_scripting.osax
Close the Finder windows you opened. Log out and log back in.
