User Account Setup

Simple question but going nuts trying to find simple answer - once I have created a second account user on my Mac where do I find the instructions that allow me to share photos and itunes etc ??? The situation is that for the first time I am sharing my Mac with my wife and therefore we will share music and photos etc. Big thanks PW

iPhoto and iTunes libraries can be shared amongst other users on the computer using the Sharing preferences in each application.
In order for sharing to work the user whose library is shared must also be logged on. To accomplish this enable Fast User Switching in Accounts preferences.
This does not allow sharing other data. To share other data use the Shared folder located in the /Users/ folder. Simply drop files or folders you want to share in the Shared folder.

  • User Account Setup & Config Tips for Two Macs

    Greetings,
Can someone please explain the importance of lowercase vs. uppercase letters and the use of spaces in the Mac OS when setting up user accounts? I'm sure there must be some UNIX, LDAP, or X.500 directory explanation out there given OS X's UNIX underpinnings.
The reason I ask, is that I have recently switched to the Mac OS from Windows, and there seems to be an emphasis on using lowercase letters and spaces in the Full Name, Account Name, and Home Directory Name when setting up your OS X user account. I have tried Googling this and I can find all kinds of articles on how to change these settings post OS install and the importance of keeping your account name and home directory name the same but nothing that explains why you should only use lowercase letters.
For example, in real life, I go by my middle name. So in the "Full Name" field in System Preferences -> Accounts I have entered my Middle and Last name with a single capital letter for each name a space in between the two.
Full Name looks like this: "Middle Last"
For the "Account Name", I have entered a nickname I have had for years that does not match or have anything to do with my legal name that I entered for the "Full Name". While the Mac OS prohibits you from entering spaces in this field, it does allow you to enter uppercase letters. The name I entered here is a two part name, and I have capitalized the first and second parts for easier reading.
Account Name looks like this: "NickName"
My Home Directory matches my Account Name above and looks like this in the Finder: "NickName"
I've also linked my MobileMe user name to this account and it looks like: "middle.last"
Question: Should I recreate my user account and get rid of the uppercase letters in the full name, account name, and home directory name?
Another question I have, would it be advisable to set up identical user accounts given that I have a iMac i7 in my office and a Mac Mini in my living room? I would be the only user for both machines.
I would like to set up my Mac Mini to be a central repository for all my music, iPhoto projects, and iMovie projects. I would like to share my iTunes music on the Mac Mini using the Home Sharing feature of iTunes. Eventually I want to set up MythTV on the MacMini and use it as a DVR.
I want my iMac i7 to store all my documents and pictures. I want to create and edit iPhoto & iMovie projects on my iMac, but store what I create on the Mac Mini. That way when people come over to visit, we can sit on the couch rather than gather around my desk in my 2nd bedroom.
Eventually I want to set up an external hard drive on the Mac Mini and use Time Machine on both computers to backup to the Mac Mini's external hard drive since I will leave the Mac Mini on 24x7.
    Thank-you,
    Derrick

Simply put there is nothing wrong with your name or account configuration. Although it is customary in Unix systems to use all lowercase for an account name, what you have setup is certainly acceptable. Passwords also can be a mix of lower and uppercase but should be limited to alphanumerics only.
As for the two machines you will find it much more convenient to have everything configured identically on both machines to avoid issues with file permissions.

  • WRV54G VPN user accounts setup.

NOTE: After adding the very first user account and the router detects that it is currently configured to the default 192.168.1.0 network, it will automatically attempt to change itself to be on a 10.x.x.0 network instead. The network numbering will become random (a possible network might be 10.252.242.0, for example). This is done to prevent conflicts with remote networks. The router address will be set to 10.x.x.1. You will still be able to access the router’s web-based setup page using the default 192.168.1.1 address, since all DNS requests will automatically redirect to the new address. If you previously had static IP addresses configured on the network (e.g., 192.168.1.6, etc.), they will need to be changed to the new network numbering.
Does the above mean I have to change my internal Network address to match the router?

Yes, you need to change your internal network to have the same range with the router. I suggest you to change the LAN IP address of the router to 192.168.x.1 before setting up quick vpn so tha it will not automatically change to a random IP.
     Hope this helps!

  • User Account Setup Problem

Hi! I finally have Mtn. Lion installed and running! I ran into the "damaged HD" cannot finish install, cannot go back to SL loop that has been discussed here. I was able to fix that issue by information I found here, and I am so grateful!
I now have run into what I hope is a simple question.  After setting up my user account, I went to setup the wife and kids. They did not have seperate user accounts prior to the upgrade, they just used mine. Since this was an upgraded OS, I decided to set them up their own accounts. I did that with no problem, the only thing is, I cannot change their login pictures without loading a new image in. The default are not loaded, I can find them in the library and add them one by one, but I was just wondering if there was a way to to load the whole group?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Ernie,
One other point that is relevant is that this problem is occuring on two Macs.
    In answer to your questions:
    1. Yes there are other .Mac accounts
    2. Not sure about this one but I doubt it since the client doesn't usually muck around with the fonts but they do move some Applications to a separate folder.
    3. It is the version distributed with 10.4 and all updates to 10.4.6 have been applied. I will get the client to confirm the Apple Mail version.
    4. No that is something I haven't tried. I will ask the client to try this.
    Thanks for your reply.
Also I've jsut tried to set the account up on a Mac with Mail version 2.1 (752/752.2) and again it failed with the same error message. This Mac has nothing to do with the affected client, and I've tried this one to eliminate any problems with moved Applications or font problems. On this same machine I set the account up in Entourage and it worked no problem. The mail server is OS X Server with 10.4.

  • After re-creating user account setup stops at blue screen

Yesterday when I restarted my Mac the Darwin/BSD black screen came up. I tried loggin in but nothing would happen. I then followed these directions posted on a forum http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1699839#1699839:
Start up in Single User Mode and type carefully:
    /sbin/fsck -y
Repeat the above until it says your disk is OK. Then:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    mv local.nidb/ local.nidb.bad
    ls -ln /Users
This last command will give you one line for each user, plus one for the "Shared" directory, which doesn't interest us. Each user will have a line like one of these:
    drwxr-xr-x 29 501 501 986 Jan 17 18:38 michaelc
drwxr-xr-x 14 520 20 476 Sep 10 2004 jdoeThe second numeric field (501, 520) is the user ID (UID) and you need to list the uids against the shortname s given in the final column. Make sure you get the name right for UID 501! Then continue with
    reboot
After following these directions my Mac restarted and came up with a screen that asked what language I wanted to proceed in. I chose English and then was brought to a blue screen with only my mouse cursor. I proceeded to follow these directions that were on the same forum:
You need to escape the spaces in the folder name, so type carefully:
    cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Setup\ Assistant.app/Contents/MacOS
ALL ON ONE LINE even if it wraps in this post.
You may get "No such file or directory" just doing this. If not, type
    ls -l
(those are both lower case 'ells' by the way). You should see something like:
    total 40
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18264 Mar 28 2005 Setup AssistantThe first line doesn't matter, do you have the second line?
I saw the second line but did not know what to do after that. I have looked on many different forums and even called Apple support and no one can seem to help me.

I know that I have probably screwed up pretty good on this one because I rushed into finding ways to fix this without really reading into it. I would really like to be able to recover my the files that were on my hard drive but I know that may be impossible at this point. I also do not have the discs because I left them at my college and I am currently at home. Hi,
Gnerally speaking, the events you list above just sytem service or application need to use system resource, then Event Viewer would record their activity. You can use Filter(filter event ID, such as 4624) to check, you will find plenty of events like new
    account logon.
About your another question, you can access to User Managment to check your sytem current user, if there is any other new user has been created.

  • How to set up user account in Windows 7/Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1?

At the present time I have only the Windows XP Professional SP3 32 bit operating system which works from a User Account with Adminstrative Privileges when it comes to using Premiere Elements.
I have read that in Windows 7, the default user account is one with standard rights. My first question is, when using Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 in general in a Windows 7 32 or 64 bit environment, do you have to elevate the user account to one with adminstrative rights and, if so, how?
My second question is, is there anything in the Windows 7 user account setup that would specifically target the Premiere Elements Project Archiver/Archiver "Trimmed" as well as Copy options to abort with the message "no user privileges to perform this operation"? The rest of the program performs OK. Supposedly inadequate hard drive space is not a factor.
Thanks for any insights into these two questions.

    SG
Just an update to the question that I presented when I started this thread.
You really never did say what type of a User Account you are using in your Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on Windows 7? But based on the information provided by several users, User Account with Administrative Rights seems to be the way to go since all of them were using it and had systems that were running well. I would have expected that based on the Premiere Elements Windows XP requirements. I have yet to have someone come forward to say that they are using Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on Windows 7 with a User Account with Standard Rights and the program is running well. Will you be that one?
Besides me switching from Windows XP to Windows 7 in the near future, what motivated this line of questioning was the report that I had seen of a user with Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1on Windows 7 who was reporting "permission" error messages when trying to archive a project with the Project Archiver (Archiver "Trimmed" and Copy options). Further questioning brought out that the problem extended to the AutoSave feature as well. The user claimed to be saving to an external hard drive (formatted NTFS) with about 800 MB free space. And still further questioning brought out that the error message included a free space and/or permissions error. Yes, there were extremely large file sizes involved here (way over 4 GB)
The story had a happy ending where the remedies were:
    1. User Account with Administrative Rights
    and the major
    2. Formatting the thought to be NTFS external hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS.

  • User Account Authentication across multiple Solaris servers - Best Practice

    Hi,
I am new to Solaris admin and would like to know the best practice/setup for authenticating user accounts across multiple solaris servers.
Currently we have 20 - 30 Solaris 8 & 10 servers which each have their own user accounts setup. I am planning to replace these with a similar number of Solaris 10 servers and would like to centralise the user accounts and their authentication.
I would be grateful for any suggestions on the best setup and any links to tutorials.
    Thanks
    Jools

i would suggest LDAP + kerberos, LDAP for name lookups and krb5 for auth. provides secure auth + extensable directory for users and other apps if needed. plus, it provides a decent spring board to add other unix plats into the mix since this will support any unix/linux/bsd plat. you could integrate this design with a windows AD env if you want as well.
    [http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/kerberos_s10.jsp] sol + ldap+ AD
    [http://docs.lucidinteractive.ca/index.php/Solaris_LDAP_client_with_OpenLDAP_server] sol + ldap (openldap)
    [http://aput.net/~jheiss/krbldap/howto.html] sol + ldap + krb5
now these links are all using some diff means, however they should give you some ideas as to whats out there. sol 10 comes with suns ldap server and you can use the krb5 server which comes with it as well. many many diff ways to do this. many many more links out there as welll. these are just a few.

  • Migrating current mobile user accounts from one OS X Server to another

I have not been able to find ANY answers to my situlaton.
I have a small office that currently has a Mac Server 10.4.11 server running that has many "mobile user" accounts setup.  This was done because we have so many mobile users coming in and out of the office.  When the user comes back they sync their home directory witht th server here.  Works great.
We recently purchased a new Mac Server running 10.7.4.  Set it up as the Open Directory Master.  I unbind from the old server and bind to the new server.  Everything seems to be working just fine except when I go and add a current mobile user to the new server it creates a new user account on the client device (MacBooks) as if the previous user settings didn't exsist.  Since they need to be mobile users and not just network users I haven't been able to find a solution to this problem any where.
Is there a way on the client to tell it to use the old user account stored on the MacBook to use with new mobile user connected to the new server?
Or is there an easier way of doing this that I don't know about?
    Thanks,
    TK

If I understand what you wrote, no.  The reason is this.  If memory serves...  In 10.4.11 accounts were assigned a UID.  In 10.7.x, accounts are assigned a UID and a GUID.  Most everything relies on the GUID at this point.  So, what you have is an account named marysue on the workstation and it is assigned a UID like 1045.  Now you created marysue on the Lion server, but you likely did not recreate the UID to match the old server.  And thus, the UID value is different but more importantly you now have a GUID value like EC0F9357-8EF2-4D3B-B6F3-2E3016400114, that is associated with the account.  So, the user, despite having the same shortname, is different.
In addition, you are working with two different directory systems.  10.4 still used NetInfo (ah, I miss you so).  10.5 and above use DS local flat files, even when bound to an LDAP system.
So, probably the easiest way to do this, provided I understand what you are seeing is the following.  Let's assume the following:
You have a mobile account on a workstation for the user maryjoe with a UID of 1034 that came from the 10.4.11 system.  You have this account cached.  You have a home folder in /Users/maryjoe.  You have now bound to the new server which contains a user named maryjoe likely with a UID of something other than 1034 and with a GUID value that likely did not exist in the old directory system, also with the shortname of maryjoe and a home path of /Users/maryjoe.
So when you log in, you are likely being pathed to /Users/maryjoe, but you are seeing a default Dock and no documents because of permissions.  My guess is that if you used Terminal to view the Users directory you would see something like this (open Terminal and issue the command ls -l /Users/:
    drwxrwxrwt   4 root       wheel  136 Apr 18 21:35 Shared
    drwxr-xr-x+ 14 locadmin  staff  476 Jan 21 7:42 locadmin
    drwxr-xr-x+ 14 1034  staff  476 Mar 21 10:42 maryjoe
Note the folder maryjoe is not owned by maryjoe, it is owned by the UID of maryjoe from the old server.
Ok, so long story short (sorry for the log explanation, especially if you are experiencing something else that I did not get from the post), all you need to do is update the permissions of the home folder.  Do this:
1:  Log in as the local admin
    2:  Open Terminal
    3:  Issue this command:
         sudo chown -R maryjoe /Users/maryjoe
Even with a lot of data in the home folder, this should not take more than a few minutes to complete.
When the command completes, run this command again:  ls -l /Users/
    You should now see
    drwxrwxrwt   4 root       wheel  136 Apr 18 21:35 Shared
    drwxr-xr-x+ 14 locadmin  staff  476 Jan 21 7:42 locadmin
    drwxr-xr-x+ 14 maryjoe  staff  476 Mar 21 10:42 maryjoe
Now try logging in as the user.  With a little luck I divined the issue and this will have you up and running.  Now, I normally will also purge the cached account in /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/ but that might be a bit daunting.  So let's start with the simple process first of ensuring home folder permissions are correct.

  • Application Issues after deleting user account

I have an imac with several user accounts setup. two of the accounts are admin.
    User1 Admin
    User2 Admin
    sysadmin Admin
    User3 User
    User4 User
    User5 User
    User6 User
User1 purchased a new macbook pro and we migrated all of her docs and applications to the macbook pro. after seeing that everything was working well, we deleted her old account on the imac from the "System Preferences/Accounts" tab from User2's account.
    Here's the issue:
Now when User2 tries to install or update applications, the system responds with a permissions error message. You do not have sufficient permissions to modify this application's settings. We also run into stange errors while just using some applications
Most applications on the machine were installed by User1 before deleting the account. Did sysadmin inherit ownership of applications and library settings of User1 upon deletion?
Is there anyway to change the settings for all applications to allow User2 (admin group) to update and install applications? Could I just change the ownership group for sysadmin directories to admin with Read & Write?
    Thanks,
    LeoK

Exactly what did you do to remove your old account? I hope you didn't just drag it to the Trash. If so then you don't have an account because dragging the old Home folder to the Trash is not how you remove an account.
You say you "edited" a new account. How did you do this?

  • Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Why is this setup now blocked by Apple? Cannot download purchased music.

Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Each of us is using an own individual iPhone, which we frequently update with our iTunes Accounts. We have had this setup for years. It was convenient, reliable and user friendly, since we both could download what we wanted, create playlists, etc. without impact on the other. Exactly this convenience has made me and my wife real Apple fans, so that we also wanted to convince our daughter to move from Android and PC to our easier Apple setup.
Since a few weeks, this setup does not work anymore. From Apple Support (online chat on Apple.at) I was not told that this is not supported any more. Every computer is only allowed to be connected to one iTunes account. From one perspective (sharing music across other users as an act or media piracy, etc.) I can somehow understand this. However, since we are using different user accounts on this computer, I do not have access to other user´s iTunes media and could not play, download or copy it. So what is the point in this?
This now means, that my wife and I are only allowed to download individually purchased music with our personal iTunes accounts only with an interval of 90 days, so every on of us 2 times a year!
Was I incorrectly informed by the Apple support? If so, how can I solve the problem? Or is this really a new policy by Apple? If so, what is the reason? Am I expected to purchase a Mac for my wife, my daughter, myslef and for the three smaller kids to follow soon?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, if Apple simply allowed people to log into different accounts and download content, everyone would be using everyone could share everyone else's content and bypass the need to purchase anything. To protect against this, they limit you to logging into a new account to once every 90 days.
If two or more of you, have different accounts and use only one computer, you should each have your own user account on the computer, to avoid the need to log in and out of iTunes.

I don't know if I'm asking this all in a way that can be understood? Thanks ED3K, however that part I do understand (in the link you provided!)
What I need to know is "how" I can separate or rather create another Apple ID for my son-who is currently using "my Apple ID?" If there is a way to let him keep "all" his info on his phone (eg-contacts, music, app's, etc.) without doing a "reset?') Somehow I need to go into his phone's setting-create a new Apple ID and possibly a new password so he can still use our combined iCloud & Itunes account?
Also then letting me take back my Apple ID & password, but again allowing us (my son and I) to use the same iCloud & Itunes account? Does that make more sense??? I'm sincerely trying to get this cleared up once and for all----just need guidance from someone who has a true understanding of the whole Apple iCloud/Itunes system!

Mobile account setup stops syncing and acts like a network user system under ODM
Setup: Mobile laptop users authenticating against an ODM. Every user has a networked home directory on an Xserve. The whole setup is 10.4 (client and server). All systems run a standard image. Most effected systems have been re-imaged since the onset of the issue.
Issue: Some of the users are not syncing properly every time. It is as if the system forgets it is a mobile system and reverts to using the User's network home (instead of saving to /Users and syncing). If the user is effected, the system will not even accept cached credentials if they are off network. This forgetfulness does not seem to follow any pattern and does not effect all of our mobile users.
In mucking about trying to find a cause to this issue I ran across an oddity in all effected systems Netinfo database. The users are each listed twice. Each entry has the same username, short name and UID. Also, In each case one record looks wrong... this varies somewhat from user to user, but in each case there is marked difference in the record's contents. Deleting the incomplete record in Netinfo manager seems to solve the issue (seems, as we are very early in testing this).
Anyone have a clues as to where this double came from? The only lead so far is that it looks like the users having issues pre-date the use of mobile accounts. At some time they all had local accounts that authenticated against the ODM but never synced or had networked home directories. The pool of users who just got laptops (and thus never had a local account) seem unaffected so far.
Also, what is the best way to browse the ODM master to find these duplicates?

I have a similar issue with computers bound to Active Directory. Users occasionally have a problem logging into their computers even though their account is fine. Logging in as Admin and running netinfo manager always shows duplicate user accounts. Deleting the one that says disabled always clears up the issue. I'd like to find a startup script that would delete the disabled account, thus preventing the issue.

  • Forgot password on my ibook g4 used command s to setup a new user account but now everytime i start it, it starts in setup account how do i fix it

i have a apple ibook g4 and dont know the password so i  followed the command s directions to enter single user mode and fsk to set up a new user account adter it rebooted       it reboots into new user  setup were  i have followed all the steps and completed them    then a restart is required only evrytime it boots back up im forced to setup again.   i was able to use my ibook before because it logged in at start up but i was able to upgrade or make any real changes because i couldnt remember password
so now im even farther from being able to use my ibook    does anyone have a fix  i do not have any disc so cant try that unless you coukd also provide a place to get it

Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

  • Setup source of user accounts for WD application.

    Hello!
I've got a WD application with "authentificate=true" option deployed on server. User source data for this server is "Database only". I need that WD application should use user accouns from ABAP instance. Is it possible to setup this and only this application for using user accounts from ABAP instance without changing user source data for whole java-instance?
    regards, Lev

    Hi Lev
    Ya it is possible,look
1.In WD authentificate=true gives access to use local system (J2ee Server).
2.For this case some other system (R/3) come into picture as CUA(Central User Administration).use have to call RFC l with definition of the system where user exists.
