User folders.

Hi, I have a question. When I create a new user in shared services some users have folder tree (Databases, Desktops favourites, Profiles, Reports).
When it is created? We do not have it for some users.
Best regards,
Grzegorz

Hi,
I think they are normally created when the user interacts with the workspace - logs in, creates preferences or launches Web Analysis.
Cheers, Iain

  • Multiple hard drives, user folders and SSD's

I thouhght I would ask for advice here before I even start.
OK first a bit of background.
    OSA X 10.6.8
When I bought my Mac, I fitted extra 1TB hard drives,  setup like this:
    Drive 1 Mac OS  500gb
    Drive 2 User home folders..moved from MachintoshHD/users 1TB
Drive 3 Data Folders, used for import of video, music and data before inport to Aperture/iPhoto/ Final Cut etc  1TB
Drive 4 Time machine backign up Drive 1 and 2 1TB
All drives as stndandard from Apple Caviar Black
Drive 3 is backed up via ChronoSync to a remote NAS box.
In the need for speed I removed the 500gb drive No. 1 and fitted a 120Gb SSD drive...and although it is quicker, it is not as good as expected, no doubt in part to the fact that the User Home folders are on a standard drive
I can't jsut move the user Home folders back to the SSD, due to space of the Aperture, iPhoto and iTunes  Librarys in the User Home folders.
    Iphoto 110Gb and Itunes 440Gb
So I was thinking Use my Drive 2..that is currently the 'Home Folder drive" as a shared data store for the iPhoto Itunes and other librays.
But need help to do this and advice on how to go about it
I will leave this post here for now as I have just had an energency work callout.  But any suggestions or advice before I start will be very much appreciated.
I do not want to risk the iPhoto database/faces etc with a move form one drive to another and have it all go sour
    Thanks
    Neil

"Leave just the /Users/my_account/Library on the SSD" Yes...that is what I want to achieve...at the moement it is not on the SSD it is on the seperate Users HDD ( No. 2) I want the User folders back on the SSD No luckily did not buy from Apple..just bought the same type as fitted...Think I bought them from Dabs.  but itwas 2009, so can't remeber now "Use preference to tell iPhoto etc to use another hard drive, same for iTunes media " So can i just copy the iPhoto and iTunes bundles across from one drive to another ? or are permisions etc going to get screwed, depending on the permissions of the drive I copy too? I do not liek to stripe drives , create arrays ..OK HDD space is relatively cheap now so the loss of space caused by using a RAID array ios not a major issue, but OI like to keep individual drives as individual drives...so no re build is needed if there is a crash.  I rather keep three indepant drives ..all with same data on them and rotate the drives on a weekly /monthly basis.. I have two FreeNAS boxes with identicla drives in them and use them as indepandatnbackups...Backup is not the iissue here, it is the moving of iPhoto librarys etc and the possible confusion the databases get into when moved with permissions etc

  • Move Users folders from external drive to a new internal drive

    Hi All,
I have a white Intel iMac running Snow Leopard. I have kept the Users folder (4 users) on an external hard disk (too many photos and movies). The internal hard disk recently died, but since all user data was on the external, I wasn't too worried.
The iMac now has a new hard disk, and I've installed the system back, starting from the original System Install DVD so that all the iApps are also reinstalled.
What I want to do now is to move the user folders to the internal drive, and use the external for backups. It seems that I can't use Migration Assistant because it only works when moving data from another Mac or another startup drive. I've looked around the forums and on the web, and the only thing I found was a post on TUAW in which the writer talked about eventually having to do this but without giving much info about how to do it (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/14/tuaw-tip-moving-your-home-folder-to-another-disk- or-moving-it).
Does anyone have any experience moving the user folders from an external drive to an internal drive, (or even just having a Mac recognize user folders on an external drive from another machine)?

Thanks, but that site doesn't have a clear answer.
Correct. As it clearly states, there are too many variables to have detailed solutions for every possible situation.
In the 'pink' box, which best matches my situation, the instructions begin with: "•You must be logged on to the account being moved...".
That's not clear at all. How do I log in to an account that doesn't exist yet? Connecting a hard disk that has a home folder to a new Mac doesn't allow me to 'log on' to that home folder's account, because it doesn't yet exist on the new Mac.
You may have to set up user accounts "from scratch." Then change the ownership and permissions on the old home folders so you can copy the contents of the sub-folders from the old home folders to the new ones.
If you're comfortable with permissions and Terminal, this may help: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20013630-263.html

  • Multiple user folders, only one user account

    Hello everyone,
I recently had to reformat my Macbook and reinstall. In the Macintosh HD/users folder are three folders: one with an icon of a little house with my computer's short name, another called Shared and another with my first and last name.
In System Preferences/Accounts, I only have one user. Whenever I use the finder to drag and drop a file into, say, Movies, it drags it into the second user folder ie. not the one with the little house icon. Consequently, Front Row cannot find my avi's and iTunes cannot find my music.
While I can (and have) simply transfer all my files from one folder to another, it doesn't explain where this extra user came from and why it seems to have control over the Pictures, Movies and Music folders on the left hand side in Finder while the account that I'm logged in on is somehow secondary.
I really don't want to have to reformat my machine again. How do I delete this second user safely? Where did it come from?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a million
    Dave

Some ways that you can end up with extra user folders are:
You migrated data from an older computer using the migration assistant or target disk mode.
If that is not the case then what has happened is that you done an archive and install not preserving user and network settings but then that folder should be located in a previous system folder.
The most likely scenario, is however, that you somehow managed to rename your home folder.
When that happens and you restart your computer the system will look for a folder with your username, that name on your computer, is the name on the folder that has the home icon.
If a folder with that name is not found a new user folder will be created, it will however, not contain any of your current data files.
Open the folder which does not have the home icon and check for your user data.
If it contains your user data you need to rename it back to the name of the home folder with the icon.
It is not that simple though since you can't have 2 folders with the same name.
So move the folder with the home icon into shared.
Now rename the other folder to its proper name.
Then log out and when you log back in you will be logged into the other user folder with your data.
If you created any files under the new user folder you can retrieve them from the folder you dragged into Shared and you will note that it no longer has the home icon.

  • Sharing user folders between two OSX partitions

I have two partitions on my drive running OSX, one running 10.9.4 (we'll call this Partition 1), the other running another recent version of OSX that I apparently can't name here because someone out there doesn't know how to read or is being a troll (you know who you are), and keeps getting my thread deleted for no valid reason. We'll call the second partition, you guessed it, Partition 2.
What I'd like to be able to do is have my computer booted to Partition 2 and access my user folders (movies, photos, etc) that exist on Partition 1, as it's a drag to have to reboot to Partition 1 every time I want to work, watch a movie, listen to music, etc, etc. etc.
I've had no luck. No matter what I try, when I'm booted to Partition 2 and try to access the user folders in Partition 1, they all have the red circle on the icon, and I get a "you don't have permission..." error when I try to open them.Helpful facts:
The username is the same for my user account on both Partition 1 and Partition 2.
I've tried allowing permissions to everyone, and in Get Info I've tried applying the permission settings to enclosed items (the only suggestion I got on the discussion I started about a month ago on this issue.
No, I don't have the HD space in my MBPr to have a duplication of the entire user account on the other partition, nor would I want to - if something is modified in Partition 1, I want to have fluid access in Partition 2.
When in Partition 1, I can move files into the public folder for my Partition 2 user (which I've done a couple times when I know in advance that I might want a file to play with in Partition 2 - though this is nowhere near a practical solution to my issue).
    Thanks for any help.

You have two different account usernames and passwords, so you cannot access the information in a user account unless you are logged into that account. If you want to access data across the partitions, then both user accounts must have the same username and password. You may then access the information directly or using aliases.
The alternative to this is to use the entire home folder on one partition as the default home folder on the other partition. You can do this using Users & Groups preferences.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the other partition (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the other partition.
I am the person who reported your posts because of the discussion related to beta software. Apparently, you did not like what you were told by the moderators and decided to try again. By insisting on not following the forum rules you were the troll, not I. All you had to do was simply refer to two partitions without regard to what operating systems were involved, etc.
You have an answer to your question despite your rudeness.

  • MacOSX AIR Permissions for non-administrator user folders

We're making final changes to our installer for PowerPC Macs, which cannot get the fixes in Adobe AIR 2.7.
What are the ownership AND permissions expected to be for normal Adobe AIR operation in the following user folders?
    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AIR
    ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/www.macromedia.com/
    /Users/Shared/Library/Application Support/Adobe
We would like to know if it is advisable to apply the permissions fixes to user folders other than those under the administrator user. Neither the AIR Install Repair.zip posted on the forums nor the MacOSX Adobe AIR 2.7 Installer logs show that any user folders other than those under the administrator user are modified.
    Thanks for your advice.

    Hi,
I don't believe you'll need to make adjustments to these folders.  Here's what mine are set to:
    /Users/chris/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AIR
    755 / owner:chris group:chris
    /Users/chris/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/www.macromedia.com
    755 / owner:chris group:chris
    /Users/Shared/Library/Application Support/Adobe
    755 / owner:chris group:wheel
Fwiw, the reason we had to fix up permissions was due to beta versions of past Creative Suite installers (the shipping installers were corrected.)  As far as I know, the only folders effected were the ones we corrected in the installer and I addressed in the script.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Mod_rewrite not working in user folders?

    Hi everybody,
I experience a odd problem and maybe somebody can help. I use a 10.5.8 OS X Server running Apache with PHP 5.3.0.3 entropy update and all works fine.
Today I tried to create .htaccess file to redirect some http requests, also known as url rewriting using mod_rewrite.so. I tried to create a file in /Library/WebServer/Documents with this content:
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteRule ^(.+) index.php?site=$1 [L]
and a index.php file with this content:
    <pre>
    <?
    print_r($_REQUEST);
    ?>
    </pre>
This prints, whatever was given as parameter to my page… as expected.
Little later i wanted to use the very same files in my User Folder, which is based in /Volumes/Users/Userdata/username/Sites/ and it does not work, the url rewriting does not work and I always get 404 message. Looks like the Rewrite Rules never get loaded…
Is there any way to enable url rewriting for Users? Where is the config file that forces an "AllowOverride None" for my users? Any ideas?
I had a similar problem with php earlier on, which was parsed php files in the main document directory but not within user folders… odd enough, the default configuration(no php.ini loaded) does not cause this kind of problem, but if i load a php.ini eg. php.ini-recommended no filles will be parsed in my users sites directory.
this is not unique to my user account and affects all users on the server
    any ideas?

This just sounds like a classic Apache configuration question.
By default (at least in Apple's default configuration - I have no idea what Entropy do to the configs), .htaccess files are disabled (for both security and performance reasons).
In this case, since the .htaccess rewrites work in your root directory it sounds like someone has enabled .htaccess there but haven't done for the user's home directories.
In order for rewrites to work in a .htaccess file the directory needs the FileInfo override set. This is typically done in a <Directory> declaration in your config file, like:
    <Directory "/Volumes/Users/Userdata/username/Sites">
      AllowOverride FileInfo
    </Directory>
This tells Apache to permit FileInfo-based commands in a .htaccess file in the specified directory.
Just make sure you trust your users, though - putting too much power in the hands of your users could compromise your server security.

  • Install new OS, but use existing User folders

I'm going to buy a SSD for my Mac Pro. I would like to install a fresh OS on that drive, but use the existing User folders on my HD.
I assume there's an easy way to do this, but I *suspect* that the install will make default User folders and accounts?
    Any advice?

If you are the only user of your system you may be able to do this fairly easily.  If there is more than one account it still may be be possible but there's a potential "gotcha".
If you intend to keep your home dir on a separate drive from your boot ssd, depending on how many of your own apps and data you intend to put on the ssd for faster access you really only need a 60GB to 120GB ssd.  Assume the OS itself will need up to about 25GB of that ssd.
Assuming your are the only user then install the new OS on the ssd and create an account with the same account name of the one you had for the original system.  Once that is up and running you can use the standard procedures to move an account to another drive.  In other words use the Account system preferences to modify the account (account's Advanced Options) home dir info to point to your old home dir on the other drive.  In this case you don't have any current home dir to actually move since you intend to use your old one on your other drive.  Now reboot.  Hopefully your reboot will come up using your old home dir.
The "gotcha" here is the userid.  If you are the only user it should remain 501.  So doing what I suggest above hopefully will work -- "hopefully" in that it has to be assumed your old account also had userid 501.  With more than one account, if your old account wasn't 501 then I think you are in for ownership problems.
If you try this don't even attempt this without full backups of your original home disk(s).  Best you create a bootable backup of your newly created ssd too so you don't have to reinstall and you can revert it from the backup if something goes wrong.  Doing it this way doesn't write to new ssd cells if you don't have to (I am always concerend about this with ssd's even with possible TRIM or garbage collection).

  • Web Catalog - User Folders

We currently are in the process of including the domain name in the OBIEE account name so jsmith will become Domain/jsmith. This is has been changed in the RPD using the UDML script. My question is with the current users folders in the Web Catalog. My first question would be is there any thing that any of you have used to be able to figure out who has requests or dashboards saved in their personal folders/my dashboards.
In regards to moving the contents, the only thing I could think of doing right now is create the folder in the Web Catalog and move the objects under the users folder (jsmith) into the newly named folder (Corp/jsmith) then apply the applicable permissions and ownership. I was wondering if there is any other way those on the forum have done this?
Thanks to all for any suggestions.

There is no easy way to do what you want I think. By default Administrators don't have access to use folders. You can change this but you will need to do this manually for each user folder because if you do it recursively at the /root/users/ level then all the user's permissions are removed. You could do a script that checks the contents of the user's personal folder looking at the file system Web Catalog [Web Catalog Path]/root/users/[user name]/ to see if they have any requests saved or not. They are a few standard items in the user's folder so if you ignore all those plus all the .atr files (permission to items) then you should be able to get a list of users that have saved reports.

  • User folders in different language!

I got some serious computer troubles some days ago that now seems to be fixed but my USER ACCOUNT folders (I mean Documents, Library, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public and Sites) are in a different language (It could be in spanish but now appears in english). I suspect that i moved or trashed some of the USER preferences. Can you help me to solve it, please? I'm losing my sanity :-/ Thanks so much!

Thanks Eric. I did it but it seems not to solve the problem. If I go to International, into the System Preferences, and change to other languages I get after reboot the logical results in the whole computer system, but my user folders remains fixed in ENGLISH no matter the language I chose.
If I try to rename the folders in spanish, like the rest of the system, I lose the icons and the MacOS wont recognize it as user folders :-/
    Please, any other help?
    Thanks again, Eric.

  • User settings reset and locked out of user folders ! How do I retreive?

    Hi everyone,
I'm sure a number of people here on the forums have come across the problem with the blue tint that appears every now and then. It usually appears when connecting an external monitor after the you come back from the screen saver.
Yesterday it happened for the first time without an external monitor connected. I have found a number of sites that have suggested using the command 'sudo chmod 664 *' within the Terminal. I have used it a couple of times to fix this problem but it did not work hence the reason it happened yesterday without a monitor connected. When I did use this command previously I first entered
    cd /library/colorsync/profiles/display
When i did it for this occassion i forgot to enter the display folder first.
After this I did a restart and all my user settings were reset and I was locked out of all my user folders. I lost all my desktop settings and everything was back to when I first started my computer.
I did some hunting and found the command 'sudo chmod 777'. I tried this then did a reset and my desktop background returned and the folders were unlocked.
What I want to know is if this is the correct command to bring everything back to normal?
My user permissions in terminal are listed below

    Does this look correct ??
Any help would be great thanks

I assume this access is open to everyone when I connecto any wireless network
No necessarily, it depends whether you just changed your home folders and nothing else.
But just your home folders present a problems as they should have extended attributes which are now removed. More on that later.
Using one chmod to a directory affects all equally, though the files may have individually different permissions.
I don't know how extensively you have altered the modes permissions, but from what you have shown in your first post your Home folders are incorrect.
For your home folder, which is the default location when you start Terminal, and I dont think you have strayed from there, all the listings, except Parallels are folders, prefaced with the letter d. for folder.
On my machine, for example, the pattern for the home folders all show
    drwx------@ 5 xxxxxx staff 170 25 Jun 06:07 Desktop
normally that would be chmod 700 Desktop which will get you
    drwx------
but note the @ which shows an extended attribute or ACL in Leopard.
to write the ACL shown as @
    You will need to read
man chmod about ACL MANIPULATION OPTIONS
Personally, I think that playing around with chmod without a backup was not a good idea, and I wonder if your ambition has exceeded your knowledge. Sorry if that sounds tough, but a possible Archive and Install may be your safest path I think because what you have messed with was no small oops with a simple fix.
You could just change those home folders to chmod 700 and see how it goes without the attribute, or bite the bullet and do an Archive and Install.
I do not run parallels and so have no idea what is permissions should be.
That Time capsule is starting to look pretty good now

  • User folders and password file

How do I copy all the user folders and the users' passwords from ServerA to ServerB?
    Both are running Solaris 10.

Why not having these user directories shared with NFS ?
    or may be ftp

  • Exposing all user folders in admin view??

I have an New Imac running mountain lion.  I have 5 users including myself, where I am the admin.  How do I see all of their user folders when I am logged in?  My finder only shows my document folders no one else's.

With the default permissions, which you shouldn't change without a very good reason, you can't open the Documents folders of other users, even as an admin.
If you do have a very good reason, add an entry for yourself to the access list in the Finder Info window.

  • How to place User folders on another HD than the system?

Sorry for this perhaps ignorant question: I am contemplating to get a Mac Pro with two disks. Having heard about speed gains, I am thinking of having the system and applications on one HD and all the users' stuff (folders) on the second. In this respect I have two questions:
    1) do you think this might really help with access speed?
    2) how would I make the system to place the users' folders on the second disk?
    Thanks...

Leave a "/Users" on the boot drive. Some applications don't like there not being one, even though technically having a symbolic link pointing to another drive should work.
having your home directory on another drive is easy to accomplish by changing one entry in NetInfo Manager (in /Utilities).
Find "Users" and click on there and then your own 'short name.' Down below will be "Path" entry as /Users/short-name
    Change that to be /Volumes/vol-name-2/Users/short-name
where "vol-name-2" is actual name of the other drive or volume.
I would use some software to copy /Users to the 2nd drive, or create a folder there and copy. And copy your media and data files.
Might want to leave a small basic home folder /Library just to have one with prefs and such if needed. And always have backups.
There are a number of sites and books (David Pogue's Missing Manual covers it in less than two pages).
Gains are two forms. Free up space on boot drive. the system can access two or more drives concurrently without any contention over access or seeks.
I've always had my home directory on a RAID in this manner (since 5 yrs ago or more when Mike Bombich first mentioned and showed how to do so form the command line).

  • How to subscribe users folders

    Hi,
I have got a problem trying to subscribe users folders.
    Here is my case.
I migrate from Netscape sun messaging server to JES2005Q1.
I transfert mailboxes from the old server to the new one.
I d'like to subscribe all user to their folder, so that they are not affected by migration.
    To do so I use
    mboxutil -l > mboxlist
I extracted a list of all folders and for each login I created login.sub in each mailbox
Here is an example of store.sub for rbaud user :
    user/rbaud
    user/rbaud/Exemple
    user/rbaud/Sent
    user/rbaud/Trash
    user/rbaud/rponse
    user/rbaud/test
Then I reconstruct -r -f and every thing was right except for "rponse" folder because of accent.
Some users complain about diseaperance of all folders with accent.
Trying to fix the case I notice that I should have encode folders name like :
    r&AOk-ponse
    It looks like utf7-imap encoding
    So my question is :
Is there a command to subscribe any folder for every users
Or how can I translate "rponse" in "r&AOk-ponse"
I hope my explanation was clear enough.
    Thanks for your help.

You 're right, my users used the "subscribe" function
in their mail clients, for folders with accent.
But I will have to do other migrations and I was
asked to find a solution so that users need not to
    subscribe their folders after migration.
    I used "rsync" to download
    old_server/.../primary/=user/* in new
server/.../primary/=user/Right. You missed the mboxlist directory. You should include that in your migration. Subscriptions and such are stored there.
Simply moving the partitions over isn't sufficient. You can recover much of the data with
    reconstruct -m
    reconstruct -r
but that doesn't get it all. Moving the mboxlist database is important....
    >
There is no store.sub in their mailboxes. So I tried
to build them, before creating databases with
    reconstruct -r -f
    relinker
start-msgOk, that's not quite the correct process.
First, the store process MUST be running whenever you do any reconstruct.
Second, you needed to run reconstruct -m FIRST, before the reconstruct -r, as the database had no entries for any folders.

You said "When I did this same migration, all my
subscriptions came along with the mail", but how did
you do without store.sub in mailboxes ? Easily.
There are SUPPORTED methods, unlike the one you chose.
imsbackup/imsrestore is the route I elected to take. That gets everything.
MoveUser is another route that works well. Again, it gets everytihngs.
If you had taken the database, too, you likely would have had no problem.
If you had run reconstruct -m first, likely you would have had no problem.

  • 2 user folders after time machine backup. Macbook Pro 13", Mac OS X 10.6.8

After a time machine backup my macbook pro runs fine, however the backup has created a 2nd user file. my new user file is now named like my old one, just with " 1" added. I have 2 user folders, can I delete the old one?
After a random check of the content in both user folders I found out that it's not identical. Some files that weren't backed up with the time machine before the re-setup are in the original folder, while the new uder folder obviously only backup what it could find on the time machine disc. (Time machine backed up my whole hdd about 2 days before the crash & re-setup)
Due to this situation my local HDD is almost full now. The original user folder has 205 GB, the new one user 1 has 210 GB, plus applications with a 500GB HDD, I now have only 44GB left.
Can I delete the old user folder?
Can I then re-name the new one (user 1) back to "user"?
    Thanks
    J.

I've never heard of a 'problem' as you're having - and I searched Pondoni's Time Machine Troubleshooting FAQs and couldn't fine anythig similar.
I would be wary of deleting anything manually from your TM backup - the sparsebundles are rather sensitive. If you like, however, you could always erase your TM backups and start anew... that's the only way I would know to 'fix' the problem.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
