User Fonts Disabled After 10.4.11 Update!

***?? Ummm....not good! Three fonts I use regularly (Haettenschweiler, Marking Pen and Century Gothic) were missing when I opened a catalog project after installing the OSX 10.4.11 update. I launched Font Book and discovered my User Fonts had been disabled somehow (in fact there were no fonts listed!), and the program would not re-enable them.
Fortunately, the fonts were still in my home library (as well as collected in InDesign, God bless Adobe), and I was able to copy them into the main library font folder by dragging, and they did load when I opened the doc again. So my catalog project was not destroyed, thanks to this workaround. But if Font Book is broken due to this update, it does make me wonder what other horrors might have been unleashed in this update (aside from the poor Weather Widget being temporarily knocked unconscious).
APPROACH WITH CAUTION!!

Sorry for the bump, but I needed to know if anyone besides me has discovered this: you start up Font Book, and it shows that User is turned off/grayed out. Tried turning it back on from "Enable User" in the Edit menu (key command shift/command/E), but no go. Guess I could try just creating a new font directory, since the fonts are still in the folder, just not available to the system because Font Book doesn't like User anymore.
If that doesn't work I may be back.

  • Wi-Fi disabled after 10.10.1 update

Yesterday, I updated My OS X Yosemite to 10.10.1.  After required re-boot, I can no longer connect to my Wi-fi network, although it is clearly visible to my MacBook pro.  I do not want to give $30 to Apple to solve THEIR problem!

You don't have to look very far on the forum to see that we are getting quite a number of Yosemite related problems.
One of the most perplexing is a "naming" bug that has affected a number of users.  To see if you might be one of them......open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Sharing.
Check to see if the name of your computer is displayed correctly.  If you see a (2), (3), (4), etc after the name of your Mac, edit it to correct the name. Then, you should check this setting at least daily to see if the correct name will hold, or whether you must continue to edit the name.
Hopefully, you are not affected by the issue above.
You may also possibly have a corrupted keychain due to settings that were not correctly transferred during the Yosemite installation
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access.  Click the KeyChain Access menu in the upper left corner of the screen next to the Apple icon, then click KeyChain First Aid and follow the prompts
Otherwise, If you are using an Apple router, I would try changing the name of the wireless network and the password using AirPort Utility as a test to see if that helps. If still no help and you have an Apple router, I would reset it back to factory default settings and set it up again, this time with new names for the base station, wireless network and password.

  • Font Book - after 10.5.2 update, font has no preview and doesn't work

Help me, this problem is driving me crazy!
I've done a clean install of Leopard 10.5.0 on my MacBook Pro, on an external firewire drive (I want to keep my Tiger install as is at the momement). I install the adobe postscript Type 1 font Carta, which is a map symbol font, in Font Book. Font Book shows the preview of the font, which looks fine. I download a fresh 10.5.2 update and install it, restart. Now in Font Book, no preview of the Carta font, the preview window is blank, or it shows whichever font was displayed before, ie if I click on Arial then on Carta, the preview of Arial remains. Double clicking on the font itself opens Font Book main window, but no preview. The Opentype version of this font does exactly the same thing. Font Book validates the fonts as being okay.
When it comes to applications, Word 2004 will display the font, but character spacing is all over the place. Indesign CS3 will display the first 96 characters correctly, but after that it puts in a 'missing font' highlighted space. Opening the font with Linotype FontXplorer, the preview shows the font, though it seems to be missing the 'Z' and 'z'. Character Palette shows all glyphs in the font correctly, but double clicking on any above the first 96 puts in a 'missing font' space in Indesign. The trouble is the characters I need to use are all above this point in the font! Basically, it seems that the OS update has changed the font mapping.
The Font Book preview problem doesn't just happen to Carta, it seems to happen on a number of other fonts, mostly symbol fonts, some that I've created using Fontographer. All work perfectly in OS9 and 10.4.11. Even more annoyingly, other colleagues with different Macs on 10.5.2 are having no problems. I have done all the usual voodoo of deleting font caches, rebuilding permissions, even gone back to the font CDs to get the originals, reinstalled, etc.
I have installed Leopard from 2 different DVDs, on two different intel machines (a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro), and swapped the Firewire drive onto a G4 (I installed it so it would boot both the G4 and the MBP), and always the same result. I'm going to install an HD internally on the G4, install Leopard and see if the same thing happens.
    Anybody got any useful suggestions?

I'm slowly getting to a solution, or at least a reason, for this problem. It seems that Leopard has tighter requirements on fonts for the languages they support. The Carta info in Tiger looks like this:
    Whereas under Leopard it says:
Indonesian as the language under Leopard?! All the other fonts that I have problems with generally have NO language when I look at the info panel under Leopard AND Tiger. But Tiger seems to cope with them with my language set to British English. At least this may explain why the character encoding goes a bit crazy under Leopard.
Out of a peculiar sort of masochistic interest, I went through all of the default languages, plus a few others, that Leopard installs, seeing the effect of changing the language on the Font Book preview. I should just say that the Font Book Repertoire is always the same for all the languages, and the same info is displayed each time too. I'm now convinced it's the character mapping that changes when different languages are selected as the default.
    Font Book Repertoire:
All the following languages displayed the preview correctly: English, Francais, Deutsch, Espanol, Italiano, Portugues, Svenska, Norsk Bokmal, Dansk, Suomi.
    The preview looked like this:
The following languages showed the same behaviour as British English, in that NO preview showed, it would display the font preview of the previously selected font: Portugues (Portugal), Austalian English, Canadian English, US English, Espanol (Espana)
Changing to languages with different alphabets tended to show different things. Not sure if I've correctly identified the languages.
The two Chinese (I think) languages - AaBbCc characters only
    Japanese (I think) - a to m, A to M, numbers 1 to 0
Korean (I think) - two arrows usually mapped to singe and double quotation marks, and ABcdEFgh 1234567890 - see this image:
    Russian (I think) - 1234567890 ("*#%&@`)
Polski - This produced the most, dropping several characters from the main alphabet, but adding a load that usually map to ("*%&') - see below:
This all means that I have to stick with "English" as my Language, rather than "British English". I have yet to reinstall CS3, but I'll do this without changing the language, and hopefully CS3 with get the encoding correct.
Questions? Comments? Sorry about all the images.

  • Translucent Menu Bar still can't be disabled after 10.5.2 update

I was please that an option to turn off the translucent menu bar was included in the recent update. After updating my MacBook Pro I was able to uncheck the 'Translucent Menu Bar' option under 'Desktop & Screensaver'.
After updating my Mac Pro desktop to 10.5.2, this option is NOT available and my menu bar remains translucent. Is there really no way to turn off translucency on the Mac Pro?

Pleased to see I'm not alone. The option to disable the translucent menu bar isn't available on my G4 iBook either. Everything is working well after the latest updates. I like my translucent menu bar so no worries.
No hacks, no changes, just not available.

  • ACS v5.1 - Can internal users be disabled after x failed attempts?

I have noticed under authentication settings for internal user accounts there is no setting to disable the account after x number of failed attempts (ACS v5.1). This is such a fundamental requirement for user accounts that I am wondering whether I have missed something. (They include this option on Administration accounts)
Does anyone know if can this be set somewhere else or is Cisco going to implement it in a later version?
    Many Thanks

    Hello jrabinow ,
Thanks  a lot for the reply .
We already have our AD setup to lock account of users who failed 3 consecutive windows login attempts .
However when network administrators fail to login  after 3 consecutive attempts into a network device, they can still login into a network device if they provide their correct AD credentials .
Is there any specific configuration that needs to be done on the AD to be aware of the failed login attempts on the network devices and count it the same as a failed windows login attempt ?!
    Kind Regards ,

  • User gets disabled after 3 login failure

I just realized this problem. I don't want users to buzz a helpdesk because of failed login. Where and how can I turn it off?
Just wonder if Is it not possible, for example disable a user after 3 failed attempts, and enable it after 2 hours?

Never mind. I found the solution.
    Solution:
    1. Log into the Admin interface.
    2. Navigate to Configure
    3. Navigate to Policies
    4. Select "Default Lighthouse Account Policy "
    5. Under the "Identity Manager Password Policy Options" label.
    A. Find the "Password policy" and select from the drop down list the password policy that applies to your system. I chose "Windows 2000 Password Policy" because we are using ActiveDirectory pass through authentication.
    B. In the text box labled "Maximum Number of Failed Login Attempts" enter an number. We entered 3.
    C. Save the change.

  • Font quality after 10.5.7 update

The quality of all of my fonts on my iMac has suffered since the 10.5.7 update.
They look unclean, thinner and more pixelated than before.
I don’t think this because of faulty fonts as all fonts are suffering from this.
I have been reading about problems with the latest update and ATI RadeonX1600 graphic card - which my iMac has. Has anyone been experiencing something similar?

Thanks for your help. It did all you mentioned, deleted some suspicous fonts and made sure there are no duplicates in my font folders. But still no change to the better.
I am convinced that here has been an overall change in the quality of all graphics on the screen. But it is a very subtle change and it is hard to describe. Perhaps 10.5.7 doesn't cope well with my iMacs graphic card (ATI RadeonX1600). So far I have not read about anyone with similar problems, so of course I could be wrong.

  • SQL content database is locking when a user is disabled in Active Directory.

We have an issue, first of all we are running custom code in C# within a visual web part to "Offboard Users".  In essence it disables their AD account and moves it to another OU using the ActiveDirectoryServiceClient.
Sometimes it works seamlessly, other times it causes a lock in the SQL content DB. The list ID that always comes up with the error is the User Information List.  I have researched that SharePoint will update the UserInfo table with tp_Deleted when a
user is Disabled. Would this also update the AllUserData table with a corresponding int value due to the foreign key relationships between these two tables?  If so could this update be causing the SQL lock? Is there anything we can do to expedite the
process, it runs really long, goes to critical, locks the DB, proceeds to completion successfully, but meanwhile users cannot interact with the site. The list is indexed on user name and work email. It is close to 4,000 list items, but broken into views. However
I don't think this has anything to do with the list itself as the Profile Service should be updating the list, the code does not.
We have separate DB for each site collection and all are within / under the 100GB limit.
How is the AllUserData table updated from the UserInfo table?
    Thank You,
    Crjangel

I wouldn't have expected such a problem, but there you are :-(. Luckily you can analyze further by issuing a SQL DMV query providing details about existing locks, for instance using this one:

The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.

  • Users cannot log into Remote Desktop after 3/11/2015 update!

I have a simple network where users can log into a Windows SBS 2008 server with Remote Desktop to access various applications.  This worked quite smoothly until this morning, after the updates of last evening. (3/11/2015)
When users tried to log into the Remote Desktop this morning their credentials were rejected, as if their username and/or password were incorrect.  Even I (as the administrator) could not log in remotely.  Finally I connected a monitor and keyboard
directly to the server and was able to log in without an issue.  After logging in directly I was able to connect through remote desktop.
This method worked for my other users as well - after I logged them in directly they were able to use remote desktop no problem.
The trouble is that I have a couple dozen users, and this is an issue that should not be occurring.  What happened in the last update to cause remote desktop to reject users credentials?  Why does it only work after the user logs in directly?
And most importantly, how do I fix this?
    A few notes:
Simply browsing for files on the server also asks for the user's name and password, and this works as well.  This is only a remote desktop issue.
I have already checked to make sure the domain was correct.  It was.
I have already checked to make sure the usernames and passwords were correct.  They were.
I have already checked to make sure this was not a unique issue for a single (or limited number) of users.  This issue effected
    all users all the network.
Thank you very much for your help,
    Dustin

I'm curious here...  If the server is rebooted, does it put the RDS users back into a "credentials failed" situation?  If so, could you please have them log in with credentials:
domain.local\username    (I suspect they may be currently using domain\username)
and see if that fixes the RDS problem without having to first log into the server directly.
The ".local" may be ".lan" or ".somethingelse" depending on how you initially configured your domain, but the default for SBS 2008 is ".local"
    Merv Porter
    =========================
That's a good question - the server will auto-reboot this evening and I'll test again in the morning.
You are correct that we've been using domain\username.  I tried domain.local\username (which is the way we've set up), and that did not work either.
I'll let you know how things turn out tomorrow morning.  I don't want to mess with my users anymore today. :P

  • Ipad disabled after updating to ios 8

I updated my ipad 2 to ios 8 and it asked for a password, I never had a lock on this device, I guessed the same one I have on my iPhone but that didn't work, now it is completely disabled.   I don't have iTunes and never plugged this iPad into a computer.
Everything is pointing now to losing all my data, but I cannot!! there are pictures of my best friend that passed away in January, I cannot lose those!  I see lots of people are having this problem  PLEASE help me get my pictures. They are very dear to me.

    MeganTD,
I completely understand how you feel.  This has happened to me as well when I updated to IOS 8 when it first came out and now I can't get into my Ipad.  The difference is that I actually had a passcode on it and just typed it in just like the million other times I did and it says that the passcode was "wrong."  I thought it was just a mistake so I did it again and it said it was "wrong again, please try in 15 minutes."  This went on for about a day and when I tried to login again with the passcode it completely locked me out to where it says to "connect to itunes" which I did but the Ipad doesn't show up unless I put it into recovery mode, which doesn't help either because I don't want to restore my Ipad until I back it up first.
I even took it to the apple store to the genius bar and explained my situation and they couldn't even help me, saying that unless you have a backup on your computer there is no way to recover your data on your ipad before restoring it.  I thought that was completely ridiculous that it wasn't my fault that the Ipad is disabled after updating to IOS 8 and that there is absolutely NO WAY of recovering your data.  I even asked if there was 3rd party software that could backup the ipad before recovering and they couldn't give me that information either.
I have been looking all around the internet for a solution but to no avail.  I hope there is some information out there that can help us because there has to be SOME WAY that you can get into your ipad and backup without having to rely just on itunes and icloud.
