  • "The CREATE USER statement must be the only statement in the batch" in SQL Azure - why? what to do?

I'm getting an error on a line in the middle of a larger sql script, only in SQL Azure.
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals WHERE name = N'foouser')
CREATE USER [foouser] FOR LOGIN [foouser] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo]
    GO
Error: "The CREATE USER statement must be the only statement in the batch."
I don't actually understand what 'the only statement in the batch' means.
What is a batch? Is it a SQL file? Is it related to a 'GO' statement or an 'IF' statement? What is the reason for the error? And how do I avoid it?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    >IF...ELSE imposes conditions on the execution of a Transact-SQL statement
I understand the general purpose of an If statement. I could let go of our definition of statement counting disagreeing too except that because of the error I'm stuck.
It's less important for Create User but what I am really puzzled over now is a very similar issue how am I supposed to do a safe version of CREATE LOGIN, when I don't know whether a login has been previously created on the server or whether I
am setting up the database on a clean server?
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.server_principals WHERE name = N'foouser')
CREATE LOGIN [foouser] WITH PASSWORD = 'asdfasdf'
    GO
If I try and execute this script, it throws the same error as above.
The first unworkable workaround idea is to omit the if statement
CREATE LOGIN [foouser] WITH PASSWORD = 'asdfasdf'
    GO
But if the login already exists on the server (because a similar script was already run), then the script throws an error.
The second unworkable workaround idea is to do
    DROP LOGIN [foouser]
    GO
CREATE LOGIN [foouser] WITH PASSWORD = 'asdfasdf'
    GO
Obviously this throws an error in the second block if the login doesn't already exist on the server.
The third workaround idea I have is to go conditional by putting an IF condition around DROP instead of CREATE:
Unfortunately that doesn't work for me either!
"The DROP LOGIN statement must be the only statement in the batch"
(This is despite the fact that 'drop login' is listed on the
supported commands page, not the partially supported page..?! Which disagrees with the notes on
    this page.)
Anyway the real question I am interesting in addressing is: is there actually a way to have a 'Create/Delete login
if exists' operation which is SQL-Azure compatible and doesn't throw me error messages (which messes with the sql execution tool I am using)?
If there is no way, I would like to believe it's because it would be a bad idea to do this. But in that case why is it a bad idea?

Once you restrict SCOTT user to not be able to do an INSERT command, the SQL*Plus returns an error for user SCOTT when he tries to execute an INSERT statement.
Note however, that this is enforced by SQL*Plus, not the database!

  • [Forum FAQ] Troubleshooting error "The specified SQL server instance is not valid" when installing SCOM reporting service

    Symptom
If you have failed to install SCOM reporting service, you may encounter below error when you reinstall it:
“The specified SQL server instance is not valid”.
    (Figure 1)
    Figure 1.
    Reason
This issue may be caused by multiple reasons, for example the reasons in Figure 1.
However, you may find that SSRS and Report Server website are configured correctly and no SSL or proxy Server is used. In these scenario, you can open the log file under path
    to find the root reason:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles
Later, you will find the error as below:
    ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException:
The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key that is used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException

    Solution
According to the error message, you can delete encrypted content by following the steps below:
Open SQL Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
    Select “Encryption Keys”.
Click “Delete” to delete all encrypted content. (Figure 2)
    Figure 2.
After that, we can install SCOM reporting service again, after successfully install reporting service, we should see the SCOM operation console as below:
    Figure 3.
In addition, you may also encounter other errors when installing SCOM reporting service, and the troubleshooting steps may be different. However, we can also check SQL reporting
service logs to find the root reason.

  • Andrew - one more doubt in the donsample.sql file,it is urgent

    Andrew,
I believe you can answer this ,i hope i am not trying too much on your patience. Thanks .I am connected to the oracle server. In that i execute a procedure which i believe is executing on the oracle server.i supply arguments to it .The arguement is a file on my local directory .The error code follows:-
I have problem running a oracle procedure which uses a xml parser built on java libraries. When i executed this procedure the following error came:-
    SQL> execute domsample('\oraclexdk\xdk\demo\plsql\parser','family.xml','error.txt');
    BEGIN domsample('\oraclexdk\xdk\demo\plsql\parser','family.xml','error.txt'); END;

    ORA-06512: at line 1
Do you know something about this .ie. classpath variables or something like that.if you want the domsample arguement syntax for further clarifications ,i am enclosing this in the following lines. The setbasedir(p,dir) prompts for a parser object and a complete directory path.what i give here is the path on my local directory and i think this creates the error.
How do i rectify this error.is it on my(client) side or the server side.If it on the oracle server side or my side can you tell me what went wrong. The parser and the dom package everything else is working fine.It is really urgent ,andrew. This is holding up all the work. The arguement syntax help says on 'dir' that this is a pointer to external file system .I have a confusion that whether this refers to external file system of the server or the client.if so form the server how to route it to the client directory or should i have a space on the server, upload this file and execute the domsample.sql file. Can you clear this concept for me.
'dir' - must point to a valid directory on the external file system
and should be specified as a complete path name
'inpfile' - must point to the file located under 'dir', containing the
    XML document to be parsed
'errfile' - must point to a file you wish to use to record errors; this
file will be created under 'dir'
I know i might be bugging you ,but your answers are really great.Thanks.

  • How to check if a user has a particular role in sql server

Is it possible to check to see if a user has a particular role in sql server? For instance, I need to check to see if the user logging in has wite ability to the database. Thanks in advance.

To answer your question from a Java-perspective, since this is a Java-forum: No.
The JDBC 3.0 specification does not state that the driver has to implement a user credential mechanism.
However, the DriverManager will throw an SQLException if user credentials are not met at all and the Connection should throw you a SQLException when trying to create or execute a statement that you are not alowed to do.

  • How to restrict the user(Schema) from deleting the data from a table

    Hi All,
    I have scenario here.
I want to know how to restrict a user(Schema) from deleting the values from a table created in the same schema.
    Below is the example.
I have created a table employee in abc schema which has two values.
    EMPLOYEE
    ABC
    XYZ
In the above scenario the abc user can only fire select query on the EMPLOYEE table.
    SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEE;
He should not be able to use any other DML commands on that table.
If he uses then Insufficient privileges error should be thrown.
Can anyone please help me out on this.

    Hi,

    Hi Frank,
    Thanks for the reply.
Can you please elaborate on how to add policies for a table for just firing a select DML statement on table.See the SQL Packages and Types manual first. It has examples. You can also search the web for examples. This is sometimes called "Virtual Private Database" or VPD.
If you have problems, post a specific question here. Include CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements to create a table as it exists before the policies go into effect, the PL/SQL code to create the policies, and additonal DML statements that will be affected by the policies. Show what the table should contain after each of those DML statements.
Always say which version of Oracle you're using. Confirm that you have Enterprise Edition.
    See the forum FAQ {message:id=9360002}
The basic idea behind row-level security is that it generates a string that is automatically added to SELECT and/or DML statement WHERE clauses. For example, if user ABC is only allowed to query a table on Sunday, then you might write a function that returns the string
    USER  != 'ABC'
OR      TO_CHAR (SYSDATE, 'DY', 'NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE=ENGLISH') = 'SUN'So whenever any user says
    SELECT  *
    FROM    table_x
    ;what actually runs is:
    SELECT  *
    FROM    table_x
    WHERE   USER  != 'ABC'
    OR      TO_CHAR (SYSDATE, 'DY', 'NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE=ENGLISH') = 'SUN'
;If you want to prevent any user from deleting rows, then the policy function can return just this string
    0 = 1Then, if somone says
    DELETE  employee
    ;what actually gets run is
    DELETE  employee
    WHERE   0 = 1
;No error will be raised, but no rows will be deleted.
Once again, it would be simpler, more efficient, more robust and easier to maintain if you just created the table in a different schema, and not give DELETE privileges.
Edited by: Frank Kulash on Nov 2, 2012 10:26 AM
I just saw the previous response, which makes some additional good points (e.g., a user can always TRUNCATE his own tables). ALso, if user ABC applies a security policy to the table, then user ABC can also remove the policy, so if you really want to prevent user ABC from deleting rows, no matter how hard the user tries, then you need to create the policies in a different schema. If you're creating things in a different schema, then you might as well create the table in a different schema.

  • How the Sun Java Forums Work (Briefly)

I am wondering if anyone could give me a brief overview of how the Java sun forums work -- esp. when someone creates a new thread.
How exactly does the JSP know to link to that thread? Is it generating a unique ID from the database or using it's own custom code? How does it point to that thread? (I'm SO FRUSTRATED. I've tried to figure this one out for about a MONTH.)
I've started to create a help desk, where it takes form data and posts it to the database. (That issue solved.) The database assigns it a unique ID -- primary key. I'm having trouble displaying the problem record for that ticket ID. (I'm new to Java and really been pulling my hair over this one for about a month.)
Let me go into some more detail:
    I have these form objects:
    - Name
    - Technical Summary
    - Severity
    - Problem
This is a standard html form page. The standard html page posts to a JSP page, where the JSP page uses a prepared statement to insert the form data into the database. The query page, (query.jsp) has a table, which only shows TicketID, Name, Technical Summary, and Severity. Obviously, the TicketID is an int and generated by the DB, as 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on...
So if someone created an issue it'd be assigned a unique ticket id. Note that from the query page, it DOES not show the problem. I WANT there to be a link to get the problem record in that row.
If anyone could help me out with this one, that would be great.

Below is the CORE JSP Query Code. Obviously, I did NOT post the HTML b/c that would look **REALLY** weird. Any help on resolving my problem, would relly be helpful! Please hep! :)

  • User tables belonging to the dbo schema were found in the database...

    Hi
    I´m running SAP on windows server 2003 R2 x64 sql 2005.
I have installed a sandbox system based on NW 7.01 SR1 ECC 6.0. It´s only abap.
After that I wanted to make a system copy of our production system to the the sandbox. So my sql colleague took a full backup of the production database and restored it into the sandbox.
Now I´m trying to run the system copy installation sapinst - SAP ERP 6.0 EHP4 Ready (Support Release 1) - Sotware life Cycle Options - System Copy - MS SQL Server - Target System Installation - Central System - Based on AS ABAP - Central System...
I choose custom and say it´s a Homogeneus System Copy (MS SQL Servver-specific)
After that I choose "Use existing database" but the it say:
*User tables belonging to the dbo schema were found in the database ES0. SOLUTION: You can only install an SAP system in a database with no user objects belonging to the system schema dbo. If there already is an SAP system in the database (MCOD), or you install a Java Add-In, you might have to convert the existing system to its own schema, or contact your SAP support.*
I have searched the forums and can´t find anything I can use. I found someone wrote that I should change the control.xml file under sapinst directory:
    Proceed as follows:
    1. Stop SAPinst.
    2. Open the file control.xml in the sapinst log directory and look for the following lines:
AllowNew: mig ? ?false? : ?true?,
AllowDboObjects: mig ? ?true? : ?false?,
    3. Change these lines to
AllowNew: ins ? ?true? : ?false?,
AllowDboObjects: ins ? ?false? : ?true?,
    4. Save the control.xml, restart SAPinst and choose ?Continue old installation?.
    but it is not helping.
    Please advise me.
If this is the wrong forum please tell which one is correct.

I am not sure where your question is directed.  The forum that you have posted your question in is for questions related to the SAP Business One SDK.  Are you looking to create new user tables/fields in SAP Business One?  If so you can do this either through the SAP Business One SDK interface using Tools > User Defined Fields and/or Tools > User Defined tables.
You can also create metadata objects in Business One programatically using the UserTablesMD and/or UserFields objects.
SAP does not support direct SQL writes to the SAP Business One Db.
    HTH,
    Eddy

  • Login failed for user 'MgmtSvc-AdminAPI' because the account is currently locked out.

We are getting the following error on our SMA web service machine in the mgmtsvc-adminapi log file.   Im guessing I could have also posted this in the WAP forum.     Any ideas on what would cause this?
Also, we noticed the connection strings in the adminapi site are encrypted as well so not sure what the credentials are that WAP adminapi is using.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Login failed for user 'MgmtSvc-AdminAPI' because the account is currently locked out. The system administrator can unlock it.

    Thanks Lance

Just had this error happen again.   THis is the account that microsoft configured during the WAP portal install.   The connection strings in the web.config for the adminapi site is encrypted so you cant see the credentials.
The WAP install didnt create local computer user but does create SQL Auth user with the name of MgmtSvc-AdminAPI
