[Forum FAQ] Troubleshooting error "The specified SQL server instance is not valid" when installing SCOM reporting service

Symptom
If you have failed to install SCOM reporting service, you may encounter below error when you reinstall it:
“The specified SQL server instance is not valid”.
(Figure 1)
Figure 1.
Reason
This issue may be caused by multiple reasons, for example the reasons in Figure 1.
However, you may find that SSRS and Report Server website are configured correctly and no SSL or proxy Server is used. In these scenario, you can open the log file under path
to find the root reason:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles
Later, you will find the error as below:
ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException:
The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key that is used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException
(0x80090016): Keyset does not exist (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80090016)
at System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRInternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo)
at RSManagedCrypto.RSCrypto.ReencryptSymmetricKey(Byte[] symKeyBlob, Byte[] pPublicKeyBlob)
at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ConnectionManager.<GetEncryptionKey>b__2()
--- End of inner exception stack trace ---;
Solution
According to the error message, you can delete encrypted content by following the steps below:
Open SQL Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
Select “Encryption Keys”.
Click “Delete” to delete all encrypted content. (Figure 2)
Figure 2.
After that, we can install SCOM reporting service again, after successfully install reporting service, we should see the SCOM operation console as below:
Figure 3.
In addition, you may also encounter other errors when installing SCOM reporting service, and the troubleshooting steps may be different. However, we can also check SQL reporting
service logs to find the root reason.
Here are some articles that would be helpful for SCOM reporting service installation and troubleshooting:

Hello,
I'm afraid you must use a dedicated instance of SQL Server for each site(SCOM/SCCM). Some similar issues were disscussed on this forum:

  • SCOM Reporting Server Installation Give Error The specified SQL Server instance is not valid

    Hi All,
    I am trying to install SCOM 2012 SP1 Reporting Server on a Windows Server 2012 running SQL Server 2012 SP1. The SQL Server also host instance for SCCM 2012 SP1 named SCCM, and not in clustered environment.
    For SCOM 2012 SP1, I choose SQL instance named SCOM. At first, I successfully installed SCCM 2012 SP1 Reporting Services. I have SSRS configured to use port 80 for both SCCM and SCOM instance, and not using SSL, with IP Address settings: All assigned. SQL
    Server Agent services on both instances are configured to started automatically. I could access http://scsqlserver/reports_SCCM and http://scsqlserver/reporserver_SCCM, but could not for http://scsqlserver/reports_SCOM and http://scsqlserver/reporserver_SCOM.
    On OpsMgrSetupWizard.log give error

    I may continue Reporting Server installation that give no error mentioned above, if I choose SSRS instance named SCCM, but it is not supported for both SCCM and SCOM 2012 using same SSRS instance. Personal certificate for ConfigMgr SQL Server Authentication
    on SQL Server has been exported and deleted. Restarting SQL Server also has been done, but no luck.
    Many thanks for your help.

  • Cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance

    I am trying to install Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Management.
    I am getting the following error:
    Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance.
    Ensure that the server name, isntance name, and, if speceified, port number are correct. If you are installing VMM remotely, ensure that remote connections are set up correctly, and then try Setup again.
    I have installed the
    Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Command Line Utilities
    but have not set up any SQL Server instances.
    how should i proceed?
    Edit:
    The followign fields are configured:
    Server Name: The name of the machine i am using
    Port: <empty>
    Use the following credentials <NOT ticked>
    Instance name <empty> (the drop down is empty)
    New Database <Ticked> :  VirtualManagerDB

    Is SQL server is properly installed on the system?
    Are you able to connect with SQL server instance?
    As per the given details looks, only client utilities installed and trying to create the database which needs SQL server.
    Make sure you are able to connect with the "ServerName\InstanceName,PortNumber" and hope installing the system as per below article:

  • Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance

    On a clean install domain member (Windows 2012), I am trying to setup System center 2012 VMM:
    1. I installed the prerequisites as instructed during the pre-setup phase of the installation then rebooted the server (SQL Server 2012 was installed and services seem to be all started properly and SQL Configuration Manager starts as well).
    2. After reboot, logged again with domain admin account and Windows update installed right away SP1 for SQL server 2012. Then I rebooted again.
    3. Restarted the installation process and left default values. At the "Database configuration" step, I am leaving everything by default as well and I am getting error: "Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance. Ensure that
    the server name..."
    4. Tried different credentials, tried using port 1433 with no effect.
    Am I missing something????
    Thanks.
    Benjilafouine

    Definitely be sure to connect with the "ServerName\InstanceName,PortNumber". If you don't reference a port number it will try 1433 and then will connect via a dynamic port number. It is best in my opinion to always specify a specific port for each instance
    to listen on in the SQL Server Configuration Manager so that you can open the fewest number of ports in the Windows firewall.

  • Get-ChildItem with -LiteralPath is throwing "The specified wildcard character pattern is not valid" when filenames contain brackets

    I'm trying to get a list of folders in a hierarchy that don't contain any mp3 files. (The goal here is to eventually clean up all the "empty" folders that only have album art, thumbs.db, desktop.ini, etc. files left). So I wrote a quick PowerShell
    command to try to do this. But it doesn't seem to be working.
    I already checked out this thread <Get-ChildItem
    SomeFile[].txt occurs error because of the [brackets]: "specified wildcard pattern not valid"> and I think I'm using LiteralPath correctly. Any other hints for troubleshooting this problem? Here's the command I'm using.
    Get-ChildItem -Recurse -Directory | ?{
    @( @(Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath $_.FullName -Recurse) | ?{
    $_.Extension -eq ".mp3"}).Count -eq 0 }
    This is on the latest version of PowerShell found in Windows Technical Preview.

    Fair enough, but it still doesn't answer the original question- why isn't this working with -LiteralPath when the path contains brackets?
    Get-ChildItem -Recurse -Directory | ?{
    @( @(Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath $_.FullName -Recurse) | ?{
    $_.Extension -eq ".mp3"}).Count -eq 0 }
    Thanks,
    Ben

  • The current SQL Server edition is not supported by MDS.

    I am currently trying to upgrade to SQL 2014, I am using a separate UAT domain to perform the upgrade before applying the upgrade to Dev domain.  I can install a clean instance of SQL 2014 DBE and MDS on the same server, create a new database and point
    IIS to it and it works fine.  When I backup and restore the database to another upgraded or clean install instance on another server I get the following.
    The current SQL Server edition is not supported by MDS.
    It is enterprise edition of SQL 2014 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
    Any ideas of how I can fix this ?

    Hi Neoafter,
    Firstly, please note, Master Data Service(MDS) is only available in the following editions of SQL Server 2014:
    Enterprise
    Business Intelligence
    Developer
    Secondly, let me explain you how SQL Server check whether the SKU is supporte for MDS.
    MDS object model(where the application host) get the connection string(from the web application request)
    Extract instance name from the connection string. If the connection string only has server name, the instance is the default one "MSSQSERVER"
    Call Sqlboot to check whether MDS is enabled in the specified instance
    So, there may have some possible causes for the error you posted:
    The connection string points to a instance that is not existing
    The specified instance is not a SQL Server 2014 instance
    The MDS application is upgraded to 2014, however the SQL Server service is still in a low version in the same machine
    The corresponding solution is:
    Ensure the server, which is running MDS application, has SQL Server 2014 installed
    Ensure the instance is existing, and it is 2014 version
    Ensure it is a right edition of course
    Anything unclear, please feel free to let me know.
    Thanks,

  • Can two Instances of Planning share the same SQl Server Instance?

    Hi
    Can anyone clarify me on the below
    Is it possible to have our DEV and TEST instances of planning (on different host servers) point to different tables in the same instance of SQL Server 2005. I know that the apllication databases can be directed to different table names but what about the core tables:
    FSDHAADMS
    FSDHBIP
    FSDHSS
    FSDHPLANAPP
    FSDHPLANSYS
    Thanks in advance.

    I think it will work. As long as you create separate SQL databases for the planning system files for dev and prod on the sql server. If your planning web for dev is deployed on server x, and planning web for prod is on server y, when you run config utility on server x you would point to the SQL database u created for dev. Repeat on prod when u run the config utility just point to the planning system database you created for prod.
    haven't done this myself but sounds possible.

  • Some of the SQL Server 2012 are not getting monitored in SCOM 2012 SP1.( basics monitoring is happening, expect SQL role)

    Found that all the SQL servers are getting monitored, expect few servers which are having SQL server 2012 role.
    proxy is enabled for these servers, when I checked discovered inventory for SQL 2012 database unable to find these servers in that list.
    and other servers having SQL Server 2012 monitoring properly issue is with only few servers.

    Hi,
    thanks for the all the input, we are using service account as windows account instead of action account !!
    will that also affect discovery of SQL role?
    and also found that there are many alerts in SCOM console, with alert description :
    SQL Server cannot authenticate using Kerberos because the Service Principal Name
    (SPN) is missing, misplaced, or duplicated.
    please let me know how we can resolve this issue, will it affect SQL discovery as well ?

  • [Forum FAQ] Configuration Manager Console shows nothing if you change SSRS to using SSL after Reporting Service Point is installed

    If the SSRS is changed to SSL mode and http binding is removed after Reporting Service Point is installed. The Configuration Manager Console shows nothing in Reporting Pane. After digging into this problem, the cause is that the SSRS information has not
    been updated in Configuration Manager Database. The following steps are taken for finding the root cause.
    1. After changing to SSL, the Reporting Service Point log shows the error as shown in Figure 1.
    The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.
    (!) SRS not detected as running
    Failures reported during periodic health check by the SRS Server DB2.SCJIZHO.COM.
    Figure 1
    From the error, seems the cause was the Reporting Service Point detected a wrong port. We digged around in Registry and found the information is a Registry key named ReportServerUri at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\SRSRP. After changing the Report
    Server address to https. The error is gone as shown in Figure 2. But the issue remains, the Console still shows nothing. It is not a right direction.
    Figure 2
    2. Open the Console log file, it also shows some valuable information.
    instance of __ExtendedStatus
                    Operation = "ExecQuery";
                    ParameterInfo = "SELECT * FROM SMS_Site WHERE SiteCode = 'PRI'";
                    ProviderName = "WinMgmt";

    [52, PID:3136][05/11/2014 20:14:15] :[ReportProxy] - User-specified default Reporting Point [PRI.scjizho.com] could not be found, [DB2.scjizho.com] is now the default Reporting Point (Figure 3).
    Figure 3
    It seems the Console wants to access the old http site and it fails to get into the site for sure. Actually, the Site Configuration information is come from Site Control File and as we all know that ConfigMgr 2012 doesn’t store the Site Control file in the
    file system. However, it’s stored in the SQL database (as XML file). The XML file is stored in a view named vSMS_SC_SiteControlXML. This view is a read-only view. We cannot edit it directly. The related table stored the SSRS information for this view is SC_SysResUse_Property.
    Running the following query will list the SSRS address. We can see the address is still the old one. This is why the Console shows nothing.
    SELECT
    name,
    value2
    FROM dbo.SC_SysResUse_Property
    where name
    ='ReportServerUri'
    or name=
    'ReportManagerUri'
    Remarks:
    This article is just to let you know why the Console cannot show the Reports after changing to SSL mode. We do not intend to make you change the table in Database, if you want to change it, you will be at your own risk. The real solution to this situation
    is to reinstall your Reporting Service Point.

    Ok, but how do you solve this problem? Does uninstalling the RP and adding it back solve this problem?

  • The error "The selected edition downgrade path is not valid" appearing in 2012th version, Can it be ignored ?

    Hi
    I am getting the following error message displayed in the screenshot below.
    Can i ignore the error or what is the solution to rectify the error ?

    Thanks for your assistance.
    First let me know how to confirm my installation as cluster or not ?
    I extracted the ISO file and followed the link. which just starts run the SQL Server 2012 ISO file.
    How can we run an ISO file ? we can only run setup.exe.
    I have got that error in Edition Upgrade facility in the Maintenance Dialog.
    Actually i am not using any clustering features, it is only one server.
    Installation might have been cluster.
    from what you posted I dont think it is a cluster. To tell whether sql server cluster is instaled  plz see below link. More over you can go to services.msc and see if you can find cluster services if not no cluster is present
    http://sqlblog.com/blogs/linchi_shea/archive/2011/12/27/where-is-sql-server-running-in-a-cluster.aspx
    You should not run ISO file please extract it on local drive to a particular folder and when extract is complete you will see green color setup file right click on it and select run as administrator a installation window will pop up on that select maintenance
    and then select edition upgrade. All this info mentioned in link I posted.

  • Paper Size Error: The specified custom paper size is not supported in the selected tray.

    This happens when I try to print a web page using firefox. When I copy and paste the same yrl into safari and select that page in Safari it prints without a problem.

    Hello Bhumika2 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
    I see that you are having some printing issues with paper sizes.
    Seeing that the operating system is 10.5, the printer is not supported on this version.  I suggest that you check for apple updates and see if anything is available.
    If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
