User Variable in Business Rule or Global Variable

I wanted to call the User Variable value of Planning application under the Globel Variable of Default Value. Example I have created one Globel variable under the Default value the user varible value need to pickup so any thought how I can do this.
I know in the Form if you use &UsrVar this will show the user variable value in the Data form but it is not showing the User Variable value in global variable or inside the Business rule.It is giving an error message there is no substitution variable has been defined. Please explain.
Thanks in Advance,
Irsh

Hi,
User variables are meant to be used in web forms and web forms only. You can certainly pass their values to business rules when you used them in POV or page section of the form during save. All you need to do is to create another business rule (local or global) variable in business rule on the corresponding dimension and use it in your business rule. If you enable running the business rule on save and using the form values for variables options in form properties, business rules would replace the values of business rule variables with the values that are set in user variables.

• Running Business Rules with global Variables in Composite Forms

Hi,
I am having trouble running Business Rules, that include Global Variables, in composite forms.
I have two forms in the composite form, both have entity in Page dimension set to 'local'. one includes entities at level 3 and the other has entities at level 0. I need to pass this level 0 entity to the business rule, from the form.
When i try to run the rule, it gives me the following error:
"This rule cannot be launched because it has hidden rtp variables without default values "
I get this error even when i set the default value for the global variable.
This rule runs perfectly when run from the individual form (which is part of the composite form).
Please help.
Thanks.

Known Issue: 9900514
The Use Members on Data Form and Hide Prompt options for business rules attached to composite data forms apply only for runtime prompt values from the globally shared pages and POVs of a composite data form. In other words, this will only use members that are shared across all component data forms. If users want a business rule to take context from a single component data form, they should attach the business rule to that component data form and include the business rules for that component data form at the composite data form level (<Business rules for componentX>).
Please let me know if this is not what we are talking about.

• Using variables in Business Rules

Hello Experts,
Do you know if it's possilble to declare (and use) text variables in Business Rules?
I want to do some strings treatment (concatenation, substring) and I need to use variables.
Regards,
Rodrigo

Hi,
thanks for your answers.
But without variables I don't know if it's possible to do the following:
I have a member dimension (that is from text type) and I want to access to it's content and, with some string treatment, reach to a member that I will FIX.
How can I access to the content of the text dimension member?
I give you the example:
Let's supose that the name of the text dimension member is TEXTMEMBER.
For Example if I use @SUBSTRING("TEXTMEMBER", 0, 3).
If I write the member like the above I'm not reaching to the content of dimension member....
Do you know how to do this?
Regards,

• Using Global variables in business rules

In EAS after expanding the Business Rules section there is a Global Variables section. I have created some global variables in this section and I am trying to use them in the Rule editor and not having much luck. Are they retrieved differently to local variables...Currently this is how I am calling them within a FIX....
FIX([Global_Varaiable])
calculation;
EndFix
Please correct me if I am wrong, also can any one provide some good documentation and some gd links for writing business rules. I'm just starting out to create some business rule which runs on save on some input forms I am creating and finding it rather difficult.... :-(..
Many Thanks
Stephen

Hi,
Global variables will work in the same way as local variables so you are using them correctly.
Business rules are just really glorified calc scripts, if you want to know about calc script commands have a read of the tech ref :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/esb_techref/frameset.htm?launch.htm
It will have all the calculation commands and functions and descriptions on how they work.

• Syntax for using AND with a variable in Business Rule Source

I've never fully gotten my head around the AND/OR syntax of calc scripts. What I'd like to do is as follows in some basic pseudo code:
FIX( ("A97" AND [Selected_Entity]) OR ("B76" AND [Selected_Entity]) OR ("C63" AND [Selected_Entity]) ).
I want my webform's business rule to execute on the selected Entity in the form (eg. A97) ONLY if that entity is part of a restricted list of members (in this case, 3 entities out of 200).
Thanks for any advice!

Hi,
I am not sure if I have totally understood what you are trying to achieve so sorry if I have misread it.
But what you could do is set up a variable in the Bus Rule, lets call EntVar.
It is set up as a local variable of type member and dimension Entity with a run time prompt "Enter Entity"
Now in your script it could look something like this....
FIX(&CurrentYr, "Working".......)
"AccMember"(
IF(@ISMBR([EntVar]) AND ([EntVar]=="A97" OR [EntVar]=="B76" OR [EntVar]=="C63") )
AccMember=.......;
ENDIF
ENDFIX
Once you have tested the business rule, you can get your form to pass through the entity into the variable.
Is this what you are trying to do?
Cheers

• Temporary variables in business rule in essbase

hi,
I want to add temporary variable in my business rule. I have declared the variable as below:
VAR TaxRate;
"ROA Tax Rate"
TaxRate = "ROA Tax Rate"->"GLBU_CVD CONSOLIDATED"->"OU_NUTRITIONAL CHEM"->"All DEPTS"->"Working"->"Forecast"->&FcstYear->"USD"->&FcstMths;
It is validatoing correctly but when I am running the rule it is giving the error as:
Error executing formula for [ROA Tax Rate] (line 18): Cannot assign [DOUBLE] objects of different length
A I doing something wrong with the declaration? (ROA Tax Rate is the member name)
Please suggest.

Hi,
Try this,
VAR TAXRATE = #MISSING;
"ROA Tax Rate"
TAXRATE= "GLBU_CVD CONSOLIDATED"->"OU_NUTRITIONAL CHEM"->"All DEPTS"->"Working"->"Forecast"->&FcstYear->"USD"->&FcstMths;

• Users cannot see business rules

Hi All,
good morning.
I ma having strange problem with business rules.
I migrated my business rules from version 9.0 to 9.3.1.
only admin was able to see business rules.
I tried to add access to all users but when the users are not visible in users list.
Checked shared services they are provisioned as users.
refreshed users list....no use.
I ran out my options.
can anyone help me out
thanks in advance.

HI
There are many options so ill give you some:
verify that the users/groups have “planner” & “basic user “ role in HSS.
Verify that you define “planning location on the HBR”
if you giving access based on groups try to see what happened if you give the access to the user and not the group and specific HBR.
Try stop\start planning web, AAS and RMI services.
I hope it will help you.

• Why admin user cannot create Business Rules ?

Hi All,
Why admin user can't create Business Rules. We've to create other userID and give the required roles and then we create Busines rules right ? Pls. advice

Historically, Business rules has an internal "native" admin user. When Hyperion is externalized, this internal id can conflict with the Shared Services admin user. Effectively the two admin ids start to conflict and cause issues. There are methods to resolve this issue, but I suggest as a rule not using the admin id for business rules, therefore bypassing the problem.

• User cannot modify business rule

hello everybody,
our user has to launch (and modify) a business rule. he is able to modify them and to go to calculation manager. Unfortunately, when he tries to open the rule he gets this message:
"rule opened in read-only mode. it is under modification by admin".
I've modified the rule three days ago with the admin user, and i've tried to access it with his user id, but i don't get the same message.
can you kindly suggest any solution?
thank you very much,
M.

i've understood the problem: if an user let opened calculation manager and then another one tries to modify it: one get the error 'cannot modify it'.
the solution is to close calculation manager, so that another connected user can modify the business rule.
thanks for the attention.

• Planning Admin or users cant see Business Rule

Hi - When I log onto Planning with the 'owner' id, I am able to see all the Business Rules associated with that cube. But when I log in with an ID that has Administrator permissions for that Planning application, I'm not able to view any of the Business Rules. I am able to see all the calc scripts associated with that cube.
I have created a group in Essbase with permissions to that cube and have calc access. then I log onto Business Rules designer and assigned my Rules to that group, but I'm still missing some permission somewhere and I can't figure it out.
Planning 3.5.1
Essbase 7.0
Thanks.

Something else I have noticed, when I create a form in Planning using the 'owner' id and then associate Business Rules with it. Then I log in with Planning Administrator permissions and go into that form to in 'enter data' mode, I dont see that 'Launch Rules' button to select the rules to run on that web form.

• How to use array variable in Business Rule

Hi,
I have read a lot about Array variable. But everywhere declaration of array variable in described. I can declare that. It works fine. But i can't implement that array variable.
Can any one please provide me an example of implementation of array variable?

forget about all varible in essbase CSC
it's bad practics.^^^Is it?
Essbase cube are self big array )^^^That's what makes ARRAY so cool -- you can set up an array that encompasses a dimension.
Example straight from a HBR:
ARRAY SomeArray["Entity"] ;

• User Variable Options: How can I use them in a Business Rule?

How can I use a "User Variable" set in File / Preferences in a Business Rule? It doesn't seem to appear as an Essbase Substitution Variable or as a Global Variable of Business Rules. The only way I know how to use it is to place the dimension on the POV or Page dimension of a data form, then use a Global Variable in a run time prompt to pick the member and run a BR against it, or some function of it.
What do I do if I want to have that dimension in Columns or Rows? How can I set a BR to directly reference the member chosen under User Variable Options?
J

Thanks Alp, but I can't seem to reproduce what you are writing below. I want to refer my Business Rule to address the value set in File / Preferences / User Variable Options; no matter what members I show elsewhere in the data form.
My other workaround is through a run time prompt and hope the user selects the appropriate user variable at the very bottom of the selection list in order to calculate the appropriate list of members.

• Use global variable to transfer user parameter in some Vi

Hello,
I have troubles when I use a global variable to transfer the parameter to a first Vi (user interface) to a second vi (acquisition interface).
In the first Vi, the user paramater is wrote to my global variable.
In the second Vi, the acquisition parameter is read to my global variable.
This 2 Vis are include to a master Vi who synchronized by the error bus.
The problem :
For the first use, the user parameter is transfer to the global variable but the acquisition vi read the old parameter. In the second use, acquisition vi read the first use parameter.
After I use the IN/OUT parameter subvi and i have too this problem.

Labview uses the dataflow to chain the execution. That is, as soon as one item of data is ready is is presented to the next stage.
Global (or local) variables do not easily fit in there. A variable is always present and ready to give away it's data. It does not matter that you write to it in one vi. Another vi, that is running concurrently is not aware that the content may have changed.
Especially if you reference variables outside of loops, the value is taken just once and never updated. Be aware! If in doubt, use the tracing facilty (the light bulb) to follow the data flow.

• Any way to set global variables except EAS console?

Hi pros,
I am searching for a way to set global variables (used by business rules) automatically.
I got several variables which should change each month. I know the rule to set them.
However, I cannot find any way to set them through scripting or something else.
I tried to research EAS repository. The one that I found relevant is HBRVariables table.
I cannot find any tool can help this.
Any one knows how?
Appreciated......
Casp Huang

Yes you can use substitution variables in business rules and they are widely used, it is relatively easy to automate the changing of values for subtitution values.
You can also put a sub var into the default value for a global variable in business rules.

• Global variable vs substitution variable

Hi Gurus,
Can we can use substitution variables in Business Rules(we can make it applicable for all the applications)..
Then what exactly is the difference between Global variable and substitution variable.
Thanks,
~RN

Yes you can use substitution variables.
A Global variable in Business rules can be used across all business rules and can only be used in business rules, it has the added benefit that they can be set as run time prompts, more info at About Variables
