UserTransaction

Hi everybody,
          I have a question, hope somebody can help me!
          I have stateless bean and performing following operations:
          1. Start UserTransaction
          2. Creating record in sybase table by calling CMP bean.
          3. Creating JDBC connection using JNDI lookup / Datasource ( Sybase)
          4. Creating temp table in Sybase
          5. Calling stored procedure.( with out and in param)
          6. Commit transaction:
          7. If any of the above fails rollback.
          For some reason Stored procedure is always returning error.
          If the same stored procedure is executed outside the transaction it executes
          fine.
          Any help will be appreciated!!!

Private static UserTransaction ut = null;
If two users accsess the class at the same time, vold it be that one is overwriting the other?
Or is usertransaction threadaware, so no conflicts occure?If you use a static field then all instances of your object will use the same UserTransaction instance.
Is this a EJB? The idea of EJBs being "thread-safe" means that each instance will be used by only one thread at a time. However if you have more than one instance (which is likely), then these might be used by different threads at the same time, and since UserTransaction is static they will all be using the same static UserTransaction object.
Why do you think it needs to be static? Are you really trying to share the same transaction between multiple instances?

  • How to get the UserTransaction object in  stateless session bean

    Hi, I am using jboss server and jdk5 version and using EJB.
    My Application flow :
    JSP à Action(Struts) à Service Locator à Session bean à Entity Bean(cmp) à DB.
    I tried to get the UserTransaction object in my Action. Its my code.
    InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext();
    UserTransaction uTrans = (UserTransaction) ctx.lookup("java:comp/UserTransaction");
    After used uTrans.begin(),uTrans.commit() and uTrans. rollback () also.
    Its working fine .
    But, I used the the same code inside in my session bean its not working.
    Stateless Session Manager Bean code :
    public class SampleManagerBean implements SessionBean {
    public void ejbCreate() throws CreateException {  }
    public void ejbRemove() {  }
    public void ejbActivate() {   }
    public void ejbPassivate() {   }

    this.sessionContext = sessionContext;

              }catch(Exception e) {
              System.out.println(“ Exception === > “+e)
    Its throws the error ie: javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: UserTransaction not bound
    How to get the UserTransaction object in my session bean. Kindly give solution the above errors.
    - Thendral

    first of all, you could just use sessionContext.getUserTransaction(). however, that would only work if your bean is using bean-managed transactions. the default is container-managed transaction, in which case you cannot get a UserTransaction object. if you want to manage transactions, you need to add the TransactionManagementType.BEAN annotation to your ejb.

  • Can I use UserTransaction within a CMP Session bean?

    Basically the problem is as follow:
    I have the following method in a Statefull session bean:
    public Whatever do()
    processSomething();
    notify();
    the notify() basically notifying the client that then query for the something that was processed in the processSomething() method.
    THE PROBLEM is that the changes have not been committed yet as the do() method is not finished yet and the container has not committed the changes.
    THE QUESTION is - can I use UserTransaction inside
    processSomething to commit the changes and leave the bean as CMP? I want to leave it as CMP as there are more methods on the bean and I don't want to have to manage the transactions for them.
    Anyone has any other ideas?
    Thanks in advanced.

    Hi again,
    The EJB specs say that a stateful Session Bean with CMT is NOT allowed to use the UserTransaction; see page 361 of the EJB2.0 specification. So combining them will not (or should not) work.
    I suggest CMT+SessionSynchronization combined with using a flag to indicate whether notify should be called or not. Otherwise, you could try splitting up the bean into two beans: one with CMT and another one without. The one without CMT could use the UserTransaction and notify.
    Also, you might want to check http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2001/10/02/ejb.html
    Hope that helps a bit,

  • How to use UserTransaction in non-EJB code

    This is in a class that is called from within a Stateless Session bean. In this class, I'm trying to use a UserTransaction object that is created as follows (taken from Zuffoletto's book):

    Why would this explicitly created tx, being used by one single call be colliding with an existing transaction?

    Hello,
    As I understand, you would like to setup a watch folder which will be getting pdf files in arbitrary intervals. You then want each pdf to be converted to ps in a separate folder.
    You could achieve this with the help of a script by polling for pdf files present in the watch folder. When you find pdf files, convert them to ps, save the ps file in another folder and then move the pdf to another folder.
    In any case, once the process of conversion of pdf to ps is over, acroread will quit.
    There is no way to keep the acroread process running in background and convert pdfs as and when they are available.
    Please let me know if this answers your query.

  • Setting Isolation level of UserTransaction Object

    can we set the Isolation level of the UserTransaction in case of bean managed transaction or in case where we are handeling transaction in servlets (I am trying to do it in servlets by geting Javax.Transaction.UserTransaction through JNDI in weblogic). UserTransaction only have few methods and none of them is to set the Isolation level. so where would be the seting or its not possible which I think should not be the case
    Thanks

    Hi,
    The UserTransaction is not the right place to set the isolation level, because then it would be the same setting
    for all data sources you access in that transaction.
    Rather, you can set the isolation level in each connection you make. That way, you can choose a different setting for each one.

  • Setting Isolation Level In A UserTransaction

    We are having a problem where a class creates a UserTransaction from the InitialContext,
    but does not see any database changes made by other EJBs even though they have
    been committed. This "seems" like an isolation issue.
    What is the default isolation level for UserTransaction? And since it appears
    that it is not seeing committed data, what level should it be set to? (i.e. TRANSACTION_READ_COMMITTED
    would be nice...)

    this is mirrored from the transaction newsgroup:
    Joseph Weinstein <[email protected]> wrote:

    Interesting, but it's not an isolation level issue. There is no DBMS
    isolation level
    that could cause a user not to see already-committed data.Well, we are using Oracle as our backend and it supports Read Uncommitted, Read
    Committed and Serializable. The Serializable option would prevent a transaction
    from seeing any committed data to a table (i.e. prevents unrepeatable reads).
    The default isolation level of most DBMSes is READ_COMMITTED, and you
    should
    never have to change it, and you should be able to see already-committed
    data.I agree, but that is not happening for us (and this gets somewhat complicated
    with JMS). What is Weblogic 8.1's default isolation level for any transaction.
    From the link below, I get the impression it is SERIALIZABLE which would explain
    the behaviour I'm seeing. Athough the article seems to be talking about CMT (container
    transation), I would suspect a BMT (bean managed transaction) be similar (just
    manual).
    If this only confuses things, please let me know the easiest way to communicate
    this issue (code, etc..)

  • How to get a connection which does not participate in the main usertransaction

              Hi All I am on WLS 6.1 sp2 on win2k. I have a requirement which is like this: I
              use connection pools/txdatasources/JTA in my application. Now when a JTA transaction
              (UserTransaction) is active - I want to take a connection from the pool and do
              some operation and commit it independently of the UserTransction commit/rollback.
              Its pretty much like this - 3 components A , B, C (none of them are EJBs) are
              involved in a UserTransactions and all of them access database via a TxDataSource
              (say TD) which points to a connectionpool (say CP). Now I want B to get a connection
              handle which is not participating in the main transaction - so that the operation
              that B does is independent of what happens to the main transaction. Now I know
              I can use TransactionManager api to suspend a UserTransaction and then let B take
              a connection from the pool and commit it and then resume the transaction. But
              is there any easier way out of it? Like if B uses a DataSource instead of a TXDataSource
              - will that give B a connection which is not part of the main transaction? if
              not then whats the difference between DataSource and TXDataSource? Any help is
              appreciated.
              thanks

    I would recommend that you mark the method as NotSupported or
              RequiresNew rather than using DataSource or suspending/resuming
              transactions on your own.
              If anything, it will be much clearer to the next person who maintains
              your code.

  • Losing UserTransaction state in Stateful session bean

    I have a UserTransaction I wish to begin and commit in different methods of a Stateful session bean. I have 2 methods to test this on the session bean:
    public void beginTransaction()
    trans = context.getUserTransaction() ;
    trans.begin() ;
    public void commitTransaction()
    trans = context.getUserTransaction() ;
    trans.commit() ;
    If I call these methods from one Perform method in a Struts action all works fine. If I call the methods in different Struts actions (storing the session bean handle on the HTTPSession in the first for retrieval in the second) the second call fails with the following exception:
    java.lang.IllegalStateException: No active Transaction
    The state of the transaction on the second call is STATUS_NO_TRANSACTION. I am certain that I have lost no state on the session bean and that using handles gives me the correct bean since I have written some state to test this. Basically something seems to close the transaction between the end of the first Perform method and the beginning of the second (I am of course assuming this is a valid thing to do).
    My session bean descriptor has <transaction-type>Bean</transaction-type>, and I am using OC4J.
    If anyone can point out what it is I am doing wrong I would be grateful!
    James.

    Sorry, I have re-checked my code and I believe I found the problem.
    I was beginning my transaction inside ejbCreate() and trying to commit/rollback in another method. This works in JBoss 3.2 but does not work in either OC4J or WebLogic 7.
    If I begin my transaction in a business method and commit/rollback in another method, everything works fine. (It also seems to work fine in 9.0.3 this way).
    So I am not sure whether this is a bug in 9iAS/WLS, or a bug in JBoss, or something that is left "vague" in the J2EE spec. Unfortunately, examples on bean-managed transactions are thin on the ground generally (the usual advice being not to use them, which I definitely agree with!).
    If you believe that the behaviour I describe is a bug in 9iAS, I can send a simple EJB test case.

  • UserTransaction or JDBC transaction

    Hi,
    please give suggestions...
    We are using a application server with connection pooling
    jsp and servlets are used in project
    for transactions Is userTransaction is better or JDBC transaction is better
    userTransaction may be implemented like this
    try
    getUserTransaction
    transaction.begin
    execute queries
    transaction.commit
    catch()
    transaction.setRollbackOnly
    JDBC Transaction may be implemented like this
    connection.autoCommit=false
    try
    execute queries
    connection.commit
    catch()
    connection.rollback
    which is better for scalability and performance when we have to use transactins
    in jsp/servlets
    regards

    Hi,
    You are talking about using programmatic transactions in J2EE applications.
    When developing J2EE applications, you are recommended to use the transaction mechanism provided by the application servers.
    Sometimes, JDBC transaction can undertake the whole task. However, using JTA (Java Transaction APIs) is the better choice.
    Especially when you are going to develop a lot of components (JavaBeans/ EJBs).
    Imangine if a transaction is to be finished after the coroperation of serveral objects(JavaBean/ EJB instances).
    How can you control the begining and the ending of the transaction by puting codes in these programs?
    But it is very easy to input JTA codes (just like userTransaction etc.) to implement it.
    Therefore, to use JTA is more convinient.
    Additionally, J2EE specifications recommend to use declarative transactions in EJBs. Thus transaction management could be more flexible.
    Good luck.

  • RollbackException using UserTransaction when calling EJB in separate server

    I'm using WL 6.1 on Solaris and am calling a stateless session EJB that
              is running in a separate server. I'm looking up the remote EJB using
              JNDI and calling through it's home interface. This works fine but if
              the client code begins a UserTransaction, then calls the EJB that's in
              the separate server, and then calls commit on the transaction, I get the
              following:
              weblogic.transaction.RollbackException: Aborting prepare because some
              resources could not be assigned - with nested exception:
              [javax.transaction.SystemException: Aborting prepare because some
              resources could not be assigned]
              The code that works looks like:
              rgData =
              HomeHolder.ROUTING_GUIDE_MGR_HOME.create().getResourceOptions(qd);
              whereas the code that fails is:
              UserTransaction transaction = new UserTransaction();
              transaction.begin();
              rgData =
              HomeHolder.ROUTING_GUIDE_MGR_HOME.create().getResourceOptions(qd);
              transaction.commit();
              If I put the EJB in the same server as the client, I don't get the
              exception so it seems to be related to running it in the separate server
              and using the UserTransaction. The deployment descriptor of the EJB
              states that it "Supports" transactions.
              Any ideas?
              Thanks,

    Yes, actually we are using:
              AppServerTransaction transaction = new AppServerTransaction();
              which is a wrapper which does what you say:
              Context ctx = new InitialContext(...); // connect to another WLS
              UserTransaction tx = (UserTransaction)ctx.lookup("java:comp/UserTransaction");
              and our HomeHolder does what you say as well:
              Homexxx home = ctx.lookup(...);
              Any ideas why surrounding the EJB call by a UserTransaction causes a problem when
              committing?

  • ERRORsymbol:class UserTransaction(cannot find symbol)/package javax.mail.in

    Hi people, I am trying to compile a web proyect in MyEclipse with Ant 1.6.2, but now it appears an error that says :
    [javac] F:\...\Doc1.java:13: cannot find symbol
    [javac] symbol : class UserTransaction
    [javac] location: package javax.transaction
    [javac] import javax.transaction.UserTransaction;
    [javac] ^
    and another one:
    [javac] F:\...\Doc2.java:19: package javax.mail.internet does not exist
    [javac] import javax.mail.i nternet.MimeMultipart;
    [javac] ^
    I'm using tomcat 5.5.23
    Could anyone say to me why could this happen???I think that I am using all the libraries I need and so on..
    Thank you very much!!

    You're not using all the libraries you need. :-)
    UserTransaction is part of Java EE. You'll need Java EE support in your compilation
    environment, and your program won't run on Tomcat. (Java EE support will also
    include JavaMail, which you can use separately with Tomcat as well.)

  • Can i user UserTransaction  in a Container-managed transaction Bean

    can i use UserTransaction to control transaction boundaries in a container-managed transaction bean method?
    below is the method:
    there is one-to-many between Employees and SalaryItem
    @TransactionAttribute(value = TransactionAttributeType.REQUIRED)
    private void initEmployeesSalary(Long salarySumId) {
    for(Employees employees: liEmployees){
    for (int i = 0; i < 20; i++) {
    SalaryItem item = new SalaryDetailItem();
    employees.addSalaryItem(item);
    when there are about 1000 employees,the method run very slow.
    What do you think I should do?
    null

    Hi again,
    The EJB specs say that a stateful Session Bean with CMT is NOT allowed to use the UserTransaction; see page 361 of the EJB2.0 specification.
    Hope that helps a bit,
    Guy
