Using 10.2 client w/ 9i database in production. Thoughts?

I am encountering an issue with a production db server running 9.2.0.7 in a unix environment and a production web/app server on Windows Server 2003 running the latest 9i client and OleDb driver.
The bug is in the driver itself and Oracle recommends using the 10.2 OleDb driver. While the drivers are supposed to be backwards compatible, I am concerned about issues that may arise when using this driver in a high-volume production environment.
For reference, the driver is typically handling peak loads of 300-400 simultaneous sessions. On rare occasions, this breaks the 9i OleDb driver. Upgrading the database to 10g is NOT an option.
Is a 10g OleDb driver safe to use in a high-volume environment connection to a 9i db?
Any thoughts, suggestions, anecdotes, and experiences are greatly appreciated.

What is the OS version of the PC you are running  and is it physical machine or virtual machine that is running the HRC client ..
OS Version Windows 7 Home Premium  64 bit and it’s a physical machine.
. The Max DB Connections for Report Client Sessions is set to 5 for each servers (There are two servers). The no of HR Sessions is set to 10.
I wanted to know if there is a way to find the HRC sessions active now and terminate the one or more or all of that sessions from the server end ?

We have had this "PRX5" problem with Exchange 2013 since the RTM version.  We recently applied CU3, and it did not correct the problem.  We have seen this problem on every Exchange 2013 we manage.  They are all installations where all roles
are installed on the same Windows server, and in our case, they are all Windows virtual machines using Windows 2012 Hyper-V.
We have tried all the "this fixed it for me" solutions regarding DNS, network cards, host file entries and so forth.  None of those "solutions" made any difference whatsoever.  The occurrence of the temporary error PRX5 seems totally random.
About 2 out of 20 incoming mail test by Microsoft Connectivity Analyzer fail with this PRX5 error.
Most people don't ever notice the issue because remote mail servers retry the connection later.  However, telephone voice mail systems that forward voice message files to email, or other such applications such as your scanner, often don't retry and
simply fail.  Our phone system actually disables all further attempts to send voice mail to a particular user if the PRX5 error is returned when the email is sent by the phone system.
Is Microsoft totally oblivious to this problem?
PRX5 is a serious issue that needs an Exchange team resolution, or at least an acknowledgement that the problem actually does exist and has negative consequences for proper mail flow.

  • How to start to use Oracle client to access Database ?

    Folks,
Hello. I have just installed Oracle Client into directory /home/myOracle/Oracle_Client. But I don't know how to start and configure the client to access Oracle Database.
Can any folk tell me how to start to use Oracle client to access Database ?

    user13764998 wrote:
I have earlier managed to install the Oracle Client (32-bit) in 32-bit clients and servers Oracle Client 10.
The reason that it went well before was the exellent setup and configurationprograms we got with that version. It seems you are confusing the "full" Datbase Client with Instant Client.
Now I'm trying to install the Oracle Instant Client 11g R2 both 32-bit and 64 (of the latest revision) on a 64-bit Windows 2008 Server .
I have managed to install the driver but the setup doesn't give me any Net Configuration Assistant or Net Manager to help with the configuration. What setup? Are you not using just the zip files?
What are you installing exactly, i.e. what install media (file) did you download?
So I haven't succeded in configuring it despite I I read the readme-info that comes with the Instant Client files. There's not much to configure - that's sort of the point of Instant Client. Just drop a few files in a folder, set PATH and off you go.
    Doesn't <instant client dir>\sqlplus user@'hostname/servicename' work?

  • Can I use regular Oracle Client version with Oracle XE Database?

Should it work? Should it be legal or not?

The regular Oracle client is only for those who have a "licensed" Oracle database server. For Oracle XE, it is NOT ok to use the full Oracle client. However, you can use the instant client against Oracle XE. Problem is that client utilities such as sqlldr won't be available in the instant client. Another option will be (if you are using linux) is to mount the Oracle XE installation directory to other machines as your client. Unfortunately the standalone XE client is not that useful given that it only includes sqlplus (which is why I recommend using instant client instead).

  • HOW TO GET INFORMATION ABOUT THE CLIENT MACHINE AT DATABASE LEVEL

HOW TO GET INFORMATION ABOUT THE CLIENT MACHINE AT DATABASE LEVEL USING 10g Database and 10g Application Server
we have developed an application using oracle forms 10g with
oracle database 10g and Application server 10g
Application uses a single Oracle User name to connect to database
where as at Application level there are different users (these are not database users)
Now how can we get the information about the user/his machine etc. at database level. earlier in 6i/8i we use to get by using
    USERENV('TERMINAL')
we had written a triggers on tables on Insert/Update where we used to update a database field Last user terminal with USERENV('TERMINAL')
but not this information is comming to be the machine name of application server where as we wish this to be the machine name of Client. Any Way outs

hi, you can use the sys_context function, like this:
    select sys_context('userenv','current_user'),
         sys_context('userenv','os_user'),
         sys_context('userenv','host'),
         sys_context('userenv','ip_address'),
         sys_context('userenv','instance'),
         sys_context('userenv','sessionid'),
         sys_context('userenv','terminal')
    from dual;
Is this what you 're looking for?

  • I'm trying to distribute a DB Application using the Instant Client provided

    Hi!!
I'm trying to distribute a DB Application using the Instant Client provided by Oracle.
I've checked the FAQ of Oracle and says the Instant Client supports all existant versions of Oracle.
But I've also seen in another posting that the oci.dll needs the same Oracle version file it was created with.
I need to distribute an application that provides all the 8i, 9i and 10g versions.
Do I have to distribute the oci.dll for each version?
I just wanted to check if this was true.
One more question, when I uncompress the Instant Client, many files appear from which
I only left oci.dll, oraocci11.dll and oraociei11.dll and erased them all, but the program
    still works. Is it ok?
    thanx

I am not sure what you mean if you say that you "need to distribute an application that provides all the 8i, 9i and 10g versions".
If you mean that you want your application to be able to access Oracle Databases of versions 8, 9 and 10, then you can use Instant Client 10.2.0.4 which is able to connect to all of them.
If your application does not need more than the three DLLs you mention to run, that should be fine.

  • Issue using a distant client to set a project on owb server

    Hi,
I'm new to OWB, and I'm facing a problem using a client - server installation.
I've designed a project on a computer (win2k), tested it and so on, following the online course to help me. Once the test phase succesfull, I wanted to deploy the project to the prod server (Linux), based in an other town. I've exported the project, logged to the distant OWB server with the client installed on my machine, imported the project and set the locations to the prod's database. Here's my problem. All my sources are flat files, and when I try to edit the flat file location into the project imported on the distant sevrer, I can only choose a path on the win2k machine (where the client is installed), whereas my flat files will be put on the linux server.
I think the solution is to use the owb client installed on the linux server, but the vpn's rate doesn't allow me to use an X11 client ..
Is there a way to avoid the trip to the server's location ?
(sry for spelling / grammar errors, english isn't my mother language).
    Thanks,
    shz

    Hi
There is a metadata location and a data location. The data location will be used at runtime for actual data movement. The metadata location is the location which is used during the design phase - flat file sampling, metadata import from db etc.. So for a location that is going to be used for a data location you can just type the expected remote path name. I take it you hit the browse button or something and seen the location directory system, if so just type the path to the remote system.
    Cheers

    Hi Folks,
We are migrating an application from a 9i database to 10g and have a problem that someone might have come across before.

  • Load Balancing FTP Server thru CSM using a single Client IP

    Hello,
We have a need to load balance 3 FTP servers. These servers are reached only from a single client IP which is a database server. The FTP method that is being used is currently passive. Our configuration is currently unidirectional, ie, the FTP client (the one database server) sends to the VIP and the FTP Servers then talk directly back to the FTP client and the traffic does not go back through the CSM. The problem is that because FTP negotiates another port to talk on, we have to use sticky so that the connection is sent back to the original FTP server that sent the FTP data port to talk on. But, since we only have a single client IP that is ever used we are not load balancing appropriately across the FTP servers.
Traffic flow goes something like this, tcp port followed after colon as an example
    1. FTP Client ----> VIP:21
    2. CSM ---------> FTP Server:21
    3. FTP Server --------> FTP Client(FTP server says come talk to me on port 1700)
    4. FTP Client ---------> VIP:1700
    5. CSM ---------> FTP Server:1700
    6. FTP Server:1700 ---------> FTP Client

  • Compilation and use of instant client

    I have two questions:
    1. Can I compile a ProC and OCI program with Instant Client (10.1.0.4 or 10.2)? If so, how do I do it? what settings need to be done?
    2. Oracle 10g can be installed on SunOs 5.8 and above. Can I use Oracle Instant Client (which is 10g also) on lower level machine, like SunOs 5.7 ? Is there a matrix which shows the platform that instant client can be used?

Thanks Toliver for the quick answer.
I still have some missunderstanding regarding the second question.
I saw Oracle's Client/Server interoperability matrix, but this matrix (at list the one I looked at) only stated the combination of which client version can work with which Oracle's Server version.
The senario I am interested in is this:
I compile a C program which uses ProC and OCI in SunOs 5.8, against Oracle server 10.1.0.4.
Now, the program need to use Instant Client 10.1.0.4, and connect to 8i, 9i, and 10g databases.
The tricky part is that the program actually runs on SunOs 5.7 (where SunOs 5.7 is not stateted as a platform for 10g), but the 5.7 machine is not where the database is. The program connects other machines which has 8i,9i and 10g databases.
    Will It work?

  • Want to use ODP 11g ( Client)

    Hello,
I have Oracle 10g Database license and want to use ODP.Net 11g ( Client) to connect.
Can I do with same license.
    Regards,
    Akhil

I would say likely yes because generally speaking licensing is based on "named users" or cpu count where Oracle Database (server side) is installed.
Licensing does not generally depend on compatibility between Oracle Client and Oracle Database.
This should be confirmed by your sales representative.

  • Installing and using the instant client

Hi, we are having some troubles with understanding how to use the instant client.
We are using a windows client, connection to our Oracle database via odbc, so we can make some staticstics.
We used to use the full oracle client 8 install, but when that gave us some troubles, so we wantedto switch to a newer release, and saw that there was an instant client. Thinking that i didnt need to install the full oracle client i downloaded the basic package and the odbc addon.
I unzipped the two archieves in c:\oracleodbc on a clean computer.
I added the c:\oracleodbc path to the %path%
I added TNS_ADMIN system variable pointing to c:\oracleodbc
    i ran the odbc_install.exe program.
I would now think that i could access the oracle database via odbc without having to install the full oracleclient, but it does not work.
When i try to add a odbc connection in microsoft odbc manager i get the following error when i choose the oracle odbc driver:
"The setup routines for the Oracle in instantclient10_2 ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 126"
When i click ok to that i get a new error window with the title: "Driver's ConfigDSN, ConfigDriver, or ConfigTranslator failed" and the error text:
"Could not load the setup or translator library"
I was not planning to use any TNS files, but just use the quickconnect string, to connect to the right oracle service.
Do i still need to install the full client for it to work or what ?
    Hope someone can help out.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm replying to an old thread, but did any of you ever got this resolved?
I've got a fresh Windows 2003 Server install, from which I'd need to establish an ODBC connection to an Oracle database.
I've downloaded Instant Client Basic and ODBC add-on, unzipped them into D:\oracle\instantclient10_2\ , added the path into PATH, TNS_ADMIN and ORACLE_HOME environment variables and run the odbc_install.exe successfully.
Trying to create an ODBC connection (System DSN) results in "The setup routines for the Oracle in instantclient10_2 ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 126".
I don't have MFC71 on the server and I couldn't figure out where to get those - I won't install MS Visual .NET just for this. MFC42 appears to be included in the OS.
Where can I get an older version of Instant Client instead?
