Using 10.6 Server as a virtualized operating system?

I notice you can get 10.6 Server fairly inexpensively, and I've heard one can run it as a virtualized system.   Here are some questions I have about it:
1. Do I understand correctly it can run in Virtualbox on a Mac that is newer than Lion's initial release that won't run Snow Leopard client, including those Macs that don't have any Snow Leopard client support listed on the bottom of https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455?
2 Which version of Virtualbox, VMWare, or Parallels has it been tried in and worked successfully?
3. Does it support all Snow Leopard client compatible applications and drivers as far as people can see?
4. Does it offer an automatic login option the same way Client does, or must you login?
5. When you set it up, is setting up a single account system as easy as Client version?
6. Are there any hidden security issues I should watch out for?

Hi
AFAIK the "Magic Triangle" applies to an environment that also includes OSX Server providing mac-style GPOs - mostly. There's another option called "Cylinder of Destiny" that takes this slightly further although it's still essentially the same. Ultimately what you decide rests on what you want to achieve.
If all you want is SSO for Users working on mac workstations and nothing else, use what Apple provides in the Client OS. You don't necessarily need OSX Server.
It's even possible to alter the AD Schema itself and add Apple specific object classes, attributes and values to provide a means for managing users on mac workstations that way. Again you don't necessarily need OSX Server. In addition there are 3rd-Party solutions that don't involve OSX Server you could consider depending on budget and how hard you want to work? Likewise, Centrify and AdmitMAC are three I can think of.
There's plenty of documentation all over the internet on how to achieve Integration. Its been going on for a few years now. Ultimately how 'successful' it all is will rest primarily on how well your AD is configured. Apple's built-in Active Directory Plug-in in many ways assumes an 'out-of-the-box' AD and ideally an environment that follows Microsoft's Best Practices for AD. I've yet to see one AD that fits that criteria. In some rare cases Integration may not even be possible. You won't really know until you try.

  • Virtual Operating System on Mac Machine?

How to use Virtual Operating System on Mac Machine?
How can i use a Virtual O/S on Mac Machine, what are the different free Software's that can help me?

Hey, guys! be careful, there's a sneaky catch with this "no-pdf-printer" thing.
The warning, concerns mostly the pros (publishers, editors, typographers....) who are used in CMYK chromatic gamut.
The catch is this: you get a CMYK archive, all right, but the color tone IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than the one you were used to get with the old good method. That's because, when you choose the "save as adobe pdf" option, initially you get an RGB CONVENTIONAL arch (check the "colors" tag: there 's no CONVENTIONAL CMYK option available). Of course, if you choose to Distill it so that your final arch is a PDF CMYK, what you finally get IS a CMYK archive, BUT: THE COLOR TONE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT! The Reds are pretty much down, and there's a green-ish cast upon it.
What you can do (and this could be an answer to the dear friend with the difficult onscreen name) is this:
You can install a virtual PPD PRINTER (an LPD). If you Google "virtual ppd printer for OS 10.6" you get the directions, DIRECTLY from Adobe (anyhow, the link is http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404931.html).
And... VOI LA! You can use this (choosing as a PPD Device the "GENERAL IMAGESETTER") in order to make things the good old way (print it as a PS and after DISTILL it enjoyably!!!).
I wonder, why Apple want to make our lives difficult, pretending the same moment that it only makes them easier...
Well, it's pretty much understandable: SNOW LEOPARD is the "prova generalle" before LION is unleashed. They test us, they weigh us, they are watching our reactions, thus validating for FREE their products. They are clever! but being clever just by considering the others (and treat them) as if they were fools, IS NOT HONEST AT ALL!

  • Vista: use the windows program manager to execute operating system commands

attempting to run forms 6 on vista... the forms app attempts a call sqlplus using the host builtin to populate some tables before calling the report.
in windows vista i get a message box indicating "use the windows program manager to execute operating system commands".
is this windwos vista message? would this have to do with permissions?
any insight most appreciated and thanks in advance.

    I don't know about the HOST-problem, but..
the forms app attempts a call sqlplus using the host builtin to populate some tables before calling the report. What about putting the logic from the SQL*Plus-scripts into a database-procedure and call that instead. I think,, with the current approach you will get problems at least when you have to migrate to Web (e.g. Forms 10g).

  • Using Microsoft.UpdateServices.ClientServicing apis on windows operating systems.

    Hi,
I am willing to use some apis from "Microsoft Update Services", but MSDN says that ,
`This namespace is used in combination with the Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration namespace to support updates for clients using operating systems other than Windows (for example, the Windows Mobile operating system).`
Does that mean that i cannot use the apis on windows Operating systems (eg. Desktop OS)
    Thanks,
    Suraj K.

There are two namespaces in the WSUS API:
Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration - which is used to manage the WSUS server
Microsoft.UpdateServices.ClientServicing - which (as you've noted) is designed to support custom written agents on systems other than Microsoft Windows -- a facility mostly pointless since the SDP schema used to package updates only supports
Microsoft Windows executable file formats -- but theoretically it could have been used to support a Windows Mobile 6.x agent, or could even be used to support a Windows RT agent (if only the RT executables could be packaged into a WSUS package).
If you want to leverage existing Windows systems (i.e. the Desktop OS) talking to existing Microsoft patch management systems (e.g. AU, WU, MU, or WSUS), you'll actually need to write to the
Windows Update Agent API which is a COM interface.

  • Using the Dvd recovery disks results in "operating system not found"

I recently bought the DVD recovery disks for Windows 8 from HP. After following the procedure using the 3 recovery disks plus the supplemental "Application and Driver recovery" disk. Immediately after installing the supplemental disk I receive a message that says "contact HP support and "in most cases recovering the hard drive will fix the problem".
When I try to reboot another message appears saying "the operating system is missing". I repeated the procedure several times (also skipping the supplemental disk) and the message is the same.

    Hi:
I can't help you with that problem but if you want to try making your own plain W8 installation media, you can use this file and it should work with the embedded product key in your notebook's BIOS.
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0W9PBigPy94aVJWSndyTFNFMzg/edit?pli=1
Then use this tool to transfer the file to a 4 GB USB flash drive or DVD.
The tool will also make the media bootable.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool
Then go to the g6z-2200 download page and get the drivers and available software you need.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=5328122
You will also need to install the AMD Chipset Drivers from the link below.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%208%20-%2064
If it works, see if you can get your money refunded from HP for the disks.

  • Nstalling Windows Home Server 2011 on a ProLiant ML350e Gen 8 Server (Nothing appearing in Operating System Selection During Install)

We just purchased Windows Home Server software that required a new server to be purchased. We went with the ProLiant350e Gen8 Server. IUpon starting up the new ProLiant server I booted from CD-Rom and got to the Windows Install program. I clicked  "Install
A New Server" However, as soon as this page loads it gives me an error that says "Load Driver" "A required CD/DVD Drive Device Driver is Missing. If you have a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now." It gives
me the option to browse or click okay. Browse only brings up the (x:) Boot drive and VID. It doesn't find the driver in VID Than if I click okay it gives me a message that says "No Device Drivers were found. Make sure that the Installation media contains
the correct drivers and then click ok" I have tried to use smart provisioning but this fails as it cannot recognise the media from the DVD drive.
    Thanks in advance,

You should use HP smart start DVD to install the Windows Home Server. If you are booting directly from the Windows DVD it would some times not detect the drivers because of the hardware compatibility issue. You should contact the the vendor and seek help
    from him.

  • Do you prefer plastic or virtual operating systems?

I would rather have the feel of plastic, ease of putting it in a dvd drive, and installing it, myself

guess Im spoiled being near multiple com related stores. those that have to travel hundreds of miles for their com needs must also be using dialup. (I feel sorry for them in many respects) a blank dvd doesnt really cost that much anymore but flash drives are still rather pricey, yet a disc copy isnt available directly from the app store along with the options of buying a download or flash drive version of lion. none of those mediums has someone chipping 1's and 0's with each copy of data, a computer does the work, so no one to have to pay. I cant see a dvd disc in a plain paper cover costing THAT much to add as an option of buying, for those who might want to go that route, even if only available from the app store. when I upgraded before, I went to the store, said I want that, they got it from "behind the scenes", I went home, and installed. I see your point for those not near com shops to buy a dvd, but its not even an option from the app store to order. again, blank dvd's are cheaper than blank flash drives (cheaper to ship too!) and since the OS has been established and available, com's do all the "manufacturing". as for packaging, I dont need pictures or text on a cheap paper disc cover coming from apples app store! the buyer HERE pays shipping/distribution costs unless otherwise offered as free. (I shop a lot @ amazon.com) we have different views on the whole buying process which is expected. but for ME, be it at a com store or the app store I prefer the option of a physically bought/owned disc route best... @ least untill disc drives become obsolete like tape, floppy's!

  • How easy is it to use Time Machine to restore if my operating system upgrade fails?

I'm about to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6.3. However, I'm a bit worried how to restore things if the process fails and leaves me with a dead Mac. Is it easy to restore back to where I backed up on Time Machine (which I'll do just before I try the upgrade)?

I prefer bootable backups/clones (made with Carbon Copy Cloner) since you can verify them after they're made; whereas, you have to restore a TM backup to ensure that it works properly. See these for details:

  • RZ20 server host entries disappear under Operating System Node

    Hi,
I am trying to setup auto reaction methods in RZ21 and want to assign them to properties in RZ20 on SolMan (as my CEN) under
    Operating System -> <server host> -> filesystems -> <file path of choice> -> Percentage_Used
for the percentage_used i assign an auto reaction method and save it. Now it seems for some bizarre reason, some of the server hosts entries under Operating Systems disappear at the next auto refresh and reappear and i lose my assigned auto reaction methods, which means i have to redo it again.
does anyone else have or had this problem and have a solution for this?
your help would be much appreciated.
    Mani

I would not encourage using root user.
Your oracle user may not have the correct permissions. You need to ensure that oracle is in the required OS group and have the required privileges and file persmissions. Ensure that root.sh was run during your install.
If you check the corresponding trace files under
$ORACLE_HOME/sysman/log/ you may find more detailed message.

  • Re: Error while Execute External Operating System Command using T.code SM49

    Dear Experts,
I Have uploaded one .exe file in the application server (eg: sum.exe) and created the OS command in SM69 transaction .
And maintained the application server path in the 'operating system command' field in SM69 t.code.
Our SAP system, oprating system is UNIX.
After I have executed the external command using transaction SM49 , but I got the below error.
Can not execute external program (permission denied) , External program terminated with exit code 1
Immediately I run the SU53 transaction code to check the authorization, but Authorization was successful.
Could any one please help on this error.
    Thanks in advance.

    >>Can not execute external program (permission denied) , External program terminated with exit code 1
You need to give the permission as 755 to your file.
    >>I Have uploaded one .exe file in the application server (eg: sum.exe)
You are on UNIX and do not expect to any result of .exe file as UNIX doesn't know about this.

  • Using OS X Server to host Wordpress site, good idea?

I have a 2009 Mac Pro. If I installed OS X Server to one of my HDD partitions, does OS X Server come with all the app's for me to host my Wordpress blog? I've already bought a domain name. I know it's more reliable (much better uptime if I bought cloud hosting), but at this moment it's just a casual blog. If my Mac Pro went to sleep would the blog/website go down? If yes, that's not a problem, but just want to know. I also think it would be fun to see if I can set up a blog/website and host myself.
But I read I need a static IP address for this to work? If yes, that means all the small businesses for which OS X Server is marketed to, need to buy a static IP address which I heard is expensive.
I also heard that hosting is dangerous as my Mac will get attacked/hacked? Wouldn't OS X Server include protective app's? And even if the hackers got through, the only damage they could do would be limited to the partition that OS X Server and the website is located on? I wouldn't want my whole network and my entire Mac Pro endangered. Please advise. Thanks!

    In no particular order...
All internet-connected systems can and do get probed, can and do get attacked, and the attacks may or may not be accessible.  WordPress in particular has a long history of security vulnerabilities, so not only are you keeping OS X current and backed up and related tasks, you're also now responsible for keeping and updating WordPress and likely also MySQL database software (quickly!) after vulnerabilities are announced.
OS X Server is the whole operating system, not something that sits in a partition — you boot OS X (with Server.app installed) and your Mac now has various services that are available.
If your Mac does get breached, then your whole local network is potentially vulnerable.  This is why some sites configure their web-facing servers in what's called a DMZ.  The DMZ is a second part of the local network that is configured such that it cannot access most or (preferably) all of your core network.  Low-end router-gateway-firewall devices do not offer DMZ capabilities.  Some open-source router-gateway-firewall packages do (if you want to use your own spare x86 hardware), and mid-range and upper-end commercial router-gateway-firewall devices often also do offer a DMZ.
Backups of your server are part of maintaining security — if you get breached, then having a set of backups in depth — multiple backups, going back to (hopefully) before the breach are how you can recover your environment, should your server be breached.  You'll want to keep copies of these backups out of the DMZ and/or off-site or otherwise out of reach of the potentially-breached server, as some attackers have intentionally deleted everything.
When you install OS X Server, you'll also need to get your local network going, your local DNS services going — you cannot solely reference off-network DNS servers successfully, properly-configured local DNS services are a prerequisite — and you'll need to get port forwarding for TCP port 80 and potentially TCP port 443 configured through your router-gateway-firewall device — and you'll need these ports to not be firewalled at your ISP, and you'll usually also want to have static IP address though a non-firewalled dynamic IP configuration can be gotten going.  (If you think you may want to run SMTP mail services eventually, then you'll either need static IP, or you'll have to run via a relay service.)
Also check with your ISP, and see if your service tier permits servers.  Some of them don't, on the non-static-IP service tiers.
In short: do you really want to be IT and network support?  If you do, then all this stuff is entirely feasible and does work and does work well — usually — and you'll learn a whole lot about IT, IP, networking, DNS services, Apache web services, and system and network security.  If you just want to blog, then using a cheap or free hosting service (somewhere off of your network) will be far less work.    Can all this work?  Sure!  There are a number of folks around the forums that host their own stuff.  Once you get the hang of it all, it's not that bad to maintain, either.

  • Using firefox version 10.5.8 now-can I upgrade to the new operating system?

I'm still using the firefox version 10.5.8 operating system and now my comuter is freezing up and now working well with some web sites.
I use my computer for work and have so many documents I can't afford to lose informaiton.
Help please... is there a way I can upgrade to the newer operating system without putting my documents at risk?

    Tinacoffee,
Firefox is a browser; do you mean that your MacBook Pro currently has Mac OS X 10.5.8 (“Leopard”) as its operating system?
If you can’t afford to lose your documents, have you been making regular backups of your MacBook Pro’s internal disk to date?
You can upgrade your MacBook Pro to at least Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8). Depending upon which model you have, you could potentially upgrade it to the current version, Mavericks (OS X 10.9.2), but you’ll need to get to 10.6.8 before you can upgrade any further. You can do that by purchasing the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, installing Snow Leopard, and then running Software Update to get to 10.6.8. Note that if you currently depend upon any PowerPC applications, they will not work on versions of OS X later than 10.6.8. You might also need to upgrade its installed RAM to ensure good performance on a newer operating system.
Before you do any operating system upgrade, be sure that you have made a backup of your valuable documents.
Note that your current freeze up could be resolvable without having to upgrade your operating system. Would you prefer to stay with Leopard and resolve the freeze, or would you prefer to upgrade to a newer operating system?
