Using a method from an ArrayList

So I'm making this program that's essentially a maze game and I'm stuck on a few small pieces of code. First let me go over a few things:
-there is an abstract class Occupant
-2 classes: Explorer and RandomOccupant extend Occupant
-2 classes: Treasure and Monster extend RandomOccupant
-Treasure has a method public boolean found() which returns the value of its instance variable found.
-the class with the method shown below initializes an ArrayList of RandomOccupants
Here's the piece of code I'm having problems with. This piece of code is in another class Maze with is does not extend or implement any others, simply uses them.
private boolean foundAllTreasures()
        boolean foundAll = true;
        int i = 0;
        // DONE_____________________CHANGE - search through all the occupants to see if the Treasures have been found.  Return false if
        //        - there is a Treasure that hasn't been found.
        while(i < randOccupants.size()){
            if((randOccupants.get(i) instanceof Treasure) && !(randOccupants.get(i).found())){
                 foundALL = false;
               i++;
        return foundAll;
    }The part I'm having trouble with is the 2nd condition of the if-statement. How can I rewrite the if statement so that I can call the found() method of the Treasure class?

You need to cast the object retrieved from the ArrayList to a Treasure object before you can call found.
BTW I don't think this method will do what you want. All it will do is return "found" of the last object in the List.
eg:
public static boolean areAllFive(int[] arr) {
    boolean allFive = false;
    for(int i : arr) {
        if(i == 5) {
            allFive = true;
        } else {
          allFive = false;
    return allFive;
public static void main(String[] args) {
    int[] nums = {1,2,3,4,5};
    if(areAllFive(nums)) {
        System.out.println("All the numbers in the array are 5");
}

    How can I use a method from another class in another package?

    What do you mean by "new keyword?" You posted this previously:
    I tried that, it seems to not be working. I want to use the constructor from the other class. I imported it, using this piece of code:
    import components.FileChooser;
    components.FileChoser();
    Typically if I am going to call a constructor on a class called Fubar, I'd use new to create a new object:
    Fubar myFubar = new Fubar();Incidently, is it a simple typo in your post or are you trying to use a FileChoser object when it should be FileChooser?

    why i m not able to use repaint() method in tower class? from where i can use repaint() method

    i can't read your code - not formatted with code tags
    I have no chance of getting it to compile (AboutDialog class?? p.draw() ??)
    here's a basic routine - add a couple of things to this to demonstrate what is not
    being redrawn
    (compare the readability of below code (using tags) to yours)
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;

      public Testing()

        setLocation(400,300);

  • Using Accessor Method from Within Considered Best Practice?

    I was wondering what is considered best practice in the AS3 world regarding this topic.
    In C++ and .NET world, as well as PHP I would consider using accessor methods, instead of directly accessing the class property, bad practice due to unnecessary overhead.
    What are your thoughts in this?

    Getters and setters and bindable vars can be public, protected or private.  Which one you choose follows standard object-oriented practices.
    is just like a macro that defines a particular get/set pair.  I would only use it on vars.  Using it on a getter simply wraps the getter in another get/set pair which is wasteful.  The Flex Framework rarely uses .  Instead, we typically define get/set pairs with metadata so we can control what event fires and when.  It also saves SWF size because the compiler doesn't have to generate a long and ugly name to avoid name collisions.

       public MyClass1 (long num1, double num2) throws OneException, AnotherException {
            // Some Code Here...
        // Override the toString() method
       public String toString() {
            return "Number 1: " + num1+ " Number 2:" + num2 + ".";
    // Second Class Separate file MyClass2.java
    public class MyClass2 {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            try {
               MyClass1 myobject = new MyClass1(3456789, 150000);
               System.out.println(myobject);
             } catch (OneException e) {
                  System.out.println(e.getMessage());
             } catch (AnotherException e) {
                  System.out.println(e.getMessage());
    }My problem is with the System.out.println(myobject);
    If I leave it this way it displays. Number 1: 0 Number 2: 0
    If I change the toSting method to accept the parameters like so..
    public String toString(long num1, double num2) {
          return "Number 1: " + num1 + " Number 2:" + num2 + ".";
       }Then the program will print out the name of the class with some garbage after it MyClass1@fabe9. What am I doing wrong?
    The desired output is:
    "Number 1: 3456789 Number 2: 150000."
    Thanks a lot in advance for any advice.

    Well here is the entire code. All that MyClass1 did was check the numbers and then throw an error if one was too high or too low.
    // First Class Separate file MyClass1.java public class MyClass1 {
         private long num1;
         private double num2;
         public MyClass1 (long num1, double num2) throws OneException, AnotherException {
         // Check num2 to see if it is greater than 200,000
         if (num2 < 10000) {
                throw new OneException("ERROR!:  " +num2 + " is too low!");
         // Check num2 to see if it is greater than 200,000
         if (num2 > 200000) {
                throw new AnotherException ("ERROR!:  " +num2 + " is too high!");
         // Override the toString() method
         public String toString() {
              return "Number 1: " + num1+ " Number 2:" + num2 + ".";
    // Second Class Separate file MyClass2.java
    public class MyClass2 {
        // Main method where the program begins.
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            // Instantiate first MyClass object.
            try {
               MyClass1 myobject = new MyClass1 (3456789, 150000);
               // if successful use MyClass1 toString() method.
               System.out.println(myobject);
                         // Catch the exceptions within the main method and print appropriate
                         // error messages.
             } catch (OneException e) {
                  System.out.println(e.getMessage());
             } catch (AnotherException e) {
                  System.out.println(e.getMessage());
             }I am not sure what is buggy. Everything else is working fine.

    Day myDay = new Day();you can then call your method through the object:
    myDay.printDay();hope that's helpful somehow.

  • Using a method from a class into another

    Hello,
    I have two classes that do separate things , one makes a checkboard and the other one creates a fading effect, and i would like to know how can i modify the first one in order for the black rectangles of the checkerboard to have a fading effect, only the black ones.
    Checkerboard
    import java.awt.Frame;
    import java.awt.Canvas;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.AWTEvent;
    import java.awt.event.WindowEvent;
    public class DrawCheckerboard extends Frame {
    public static void main(String arg[]) {
    new DrawCheckerboard();
    DrawCheckerboard() {
    enableEvents(AWTEvent.WINDOW_EVENT_MASK);
    Checkerboard checkerboard = new Checkerboard();
    add(checkerboard);
    pack();
    show();
    public void processWindowEvent(WindowEvent event) {
    if(event.getID() == WindowEvent.WINDOW_CLOSING)
    System.exit(0);
    class Checkerboard extends Canvas {
    Checkerboard() {
    setSize(256,256);
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    for(int i=0; i<4; i++) {
         for(int j=0; j<4; j++) {
    if(((i+j) & 1) == 0) {
    int x = i * 64;
    int y = j * 64;
    g.fillRect(x,y,64,64);

    g.setColor(color);
    g.fillRect(x,y,width,height);
    x += width;
    int red = color.getRed();
    int green = color.getGreen();
    int blue = color.getBlue();
    if(++red > 255)
    red = 255;
    if(++green > 255)
    green = 255;
    if(++blue > 255)
    blue = 255;
    color = new Color(red,green,blue);
    }

    Looks more or less like reinventing the wheel.
    The wheel in this case being java.awt.GradientPaint.

  • How to use a method in sequence diagram from a class diagram

    Hello, can someone tell me how to use the method from class diagram in sequence diagram? so far i only can add a classifier to the object lifeline but i still cannot add the method from the class...
    thx

    Now that Web Services is around, I'd look at possibly implement a Web Service call in your applet, which can then be given back any object(s) on return. Set up your server side to handle Web Service calls. In this way, you can break the applet out into an application should you want to (with very little work) and it will still function the same

  • Call methods from view controller to another (enhanced) view controller!

    Dear All,
    Is it possible to use/call methods from view controller to another (enhanced) view controller? Iu2019ve created a view using enhancement in standard WD component. I would like to call one method from standard view controller in the enhanced view controller.
    Is it possible to include text symbols as enhancement in standard class?
    u2026Naddy

    Hi,
    If you have just enhanced an existing view then you can call the standard methods in one of the new methods which you will create as part of enhancement.
    If you have created a totally new view using enhancement framework option ( Create as Enhancement ) then in this new view you won't be able to use existing methods in other view as a view controller is private in nature. So all the view attributes, context nodes and methods are Private to that view only.
    Regarding text elements, I guess adding a new text element is just a table entry in text table and is therefore not recorded as enhancement.( Not very sure about this, need to double check )

    Hi Rajasekhar,
    For ALV you have to write some code like this.. follow this
    lr_column = lr_column_settings->get_column( 'FIELD' ). // Field is one field you wnat to display in edit mode..
          CREATE OBJECT lr_input_field
            EXPORTING

          lr_input_field->set_read_only( abap_true ).

  • Doubt on exec method from Process class

    i want to use exec method from Process class to run an external exe.
    now the problem is that Process is an abstract class and hence cant be instantiated.nor can i access exec method directly even though i import the required packages as its not static.how can i go about using exec() if thats the case.
    Also can i run a file like notepad.exe present in system32 by providing the path of notepad.exe as an arguement in exec

    i would be really grateful to you if you can write
    the syntax for me along eith the class.i tried it out
    and i got a lot of errors
    this is what i obbtained from the documentation
    "public Process exec(String command)
    throws IOException"
    l to comprehend is what that class Process is doing
    in the syntax.from the method its supposed to return
    Process class.can you explain it and the usage of
    exec too
    import java.lang.*;
    class abc
         Runtime ob1;
         ob1.exec("c:\\windows\\system32\\notepad.exe");
    //i am getting a compile time error for this code
    which cites that <identifier> required at line 6You need to put the exec call in a method or constructor. You can't just place code anywhere within a class.
    You should also cal Runtime.exec just as I told you. It's a static method.
    There are lots of examples if you google.

  • Not able to reload the data from DB using finder methods

    Hi all,
    <p>
    I am facing a weird problem while using finder methods.
    I am using weblogic 8.1 SP3 and entity beans are CMP with DB concurrency.DB is oracle
    </p>
    <h4>Problem Description</h4>
    <p>
    I am having one session bean which internally interacts with my entity beans,
    Now say my transaction is getting initiated in one of the session bean and I use some finder in it.
    </p>
    <p>
    To make the problem more clear lets say my entity bean is loanBean with loanId as primary key.
    Now say method A of session bean initiates the transaction and I use something like
    <br>
    LoanLocal loanLocal =loanLocalHome.findByLoanId(loanId);
    <br>
    <b>Note that I am not using findByPrimaryKey method</b>
    <br>
    now this method A calls some other method B on some session bean which is having Required as its transaction attribute.
    <br>
    But before the call of B some other thread or background process updates the DB for this loanId and commits,
    <br>
    now when I fire the same finder in method B I am still getting the old data, ie I am not getting the data which has been modified in DB and committed by some other thread, I still get the old data and when I tried to generate the SQL queries which weblogic is firing, I see
    it fires the SQL for every finder other that findByPrimaryKey.
    <br>
    <b>
    Now my problem is I am getting the old data only and I need the new updated data of DB. isolation-level of DB and beans is READCOMMITTED.
    Note:: I cant use new transaction to read the data.
    </b>
    <br>
    And I couldn't understand that when weblogic is firing query for every finder then why it should not refresh the data in its cache. Is there any way to disable this kind of caching and say that everytime when i use finder just go to DB and get me the last committed data.
    </p>
    <br>
    Any help in this regard would be very helpful to me.
    <br>
    Thanks and Regards
    <br>
    Manish Garg.
    </p>

    Hi,
    In my understanding, cache is not involved in this scenario. As you
    observed, the container fires sql every time when you invoke this finder.
    So, it should just give the result that it got from the DB. Is there a
    possibility that the DB is using repeatable_read or serializable for
    isolation level?
    You can debug further by doing couple of things -
    1. Instrument the code in the generated RDBMS java file for the entity bean
    (if you use -keepgenerated option for weblogic.ejbc, u can get the source of
    this file). This class will have the implementation for ejbFindByLoanId. You
    can just print the result set data after the query is fired.
    2. Try the same scenario without the ejb container. Like, write a jsp which
    will start a user tx and fire the query twice such that there is an update
    between the two queries. Note that, you need to use a TxDataSource to get
    the JDBC connection so that it will be tx aware.

  • Using main class's methods from a different class in the same file

    Hi guys. Migrating from C++, hit a few snags. Hope someone can furnish a quick word of advice here.
    1. The filename is test.java, so test is the main class. This code and the topic title speak for themselves:
    class SomeClass
         public void SomeMethod()
              System.out.println(test.SomeOperation());
    public class test
         public static void main(String args[])
              SomeClass someObject = new SomeClass();
              someObject.SomeMethod();
         public static String SomeOperation()
              return "SomeThing";
    }The code works fine. What I want to know is, is there some way to use test.SomeOperation() from SomeClass without the test.?
    2. No sense opening a second topic for this, so second question: Similarly, is there a good way to refer to System.out.println without the System.out.? Like the using keyword in C++.
    Thanks.

    pfiinit wrote:

SomeOperation is a static method of the test class, and it's best to call it that way so you know exactly what your code is doing here.
    2. No sense opening a second topic for this, so second question: Similarly, is there a good way to refer to System.out.println without the System.out.? Like the using keyword in C++.Again, you could use static imports, but again, I don't recommend it. Myself, I use Eclipse and set up its template so that when I type sop it automatically spits out System.out.println(). Most decent IDE's have this capability.
    Also, you may wish to look up Java naming conventions, since if you abide by them, it will make it easier for others to understand your code.
    Much luck and welcome to this forum!
