Using a nav bar with Dreamweaver in Catalyst
I am trying to create just a navigation bar in Catalyst like you might in flash with animated rollovers. Then export the swift to use in a dreamweaver set of pages.
The problem I am having is trying to get the page destination set up correctly. All I can find in Catalyst is Go To URL, which would be ok but it will not let me remove the Http//
So if I fire this up in Dreamweaver, embed it, and test. It looks like a virus because its trying to go outside the parent directory of the site.
Is there a way to make relative paths, I guess is my question?
In the current version, no. If you have Flash Builder installed ( or just load up the trial), you could go into code and change the urls in there manually. One word of caution is the Flash Catalyst files tend to larger files than one can create in Flash Professional alone. If you are just using Flash Catalyst to create a nav bar, you might be better to develop it in Flash Professional. But, if you need to prototype it fast and get your client to sign off on the design, then Catalyst is a prefect solution.

i have 5 html pages that share a common header, footer, and sidebar. how do i use my nav bar to change the content of the body without duplicating a lot of code? thank you!
i inherited the website. It’s for a non-profit and is not very
sophisticated, and neither am I in webdesign. It currently has multiple
pages that are identical except for that body section, so whenever i change
the navigation (in the sidebar) I have to update every html page. I want
to have one basic page, and just call in the different body content based
on the link the user selects from the nav bar. How can i do that using a
script? i am using Dreamweaver.

I have created a site with iWeb. I have replaced the iWeb Nav bar with a vertical one I made myself. Problem is, my top button disables itself (and the animation doesn't work) if it overlaps into the "hidden" nav bar area (indicated by a blue rectangle). I can cmd click and drag it into this area, but then all the rest of my site is pushed down the page. Don't know what to do about this. I don't know how to bring the rest of the page up without dragging it also into the designated nav bar area. Also, by doing this, is it affecting my site in ant way? see my site here at www.steveburrowsimages.com
The home page is with it all draged into the nav bar area and the about page is with is outside the nav bar area (notice that the top button does not animate or work as a button.
Getting confused here. Anyone got any ideas?Well, you made a good start with SEO by getting rid of the iWeb default navigation since it doesn't help the spiders and, out there in the real world, there are more people than you would think with javascript turned off in their browsers.
One of the downsides of iWeb is that it doesn't allow for the alt attribute in the img tag. Its well worth adding these to give you extra keywords even if you have captioned all your images. Use iWeb SEO Tool for this...
http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Search-Engine-Optimization/Tags.html
iWeb, just like most drag and drop software, creates a huge amount of code which causes the pages to load slowly in the browser. Running you files through an optimizer will help to reduce this problem and further reduce the size of image files even beyond the initial optimization you do before loading them into iWeb...

Using the nav bar to link to another page.
It is possible to use the nave bar to link to another page such as a blog?
Example:
Welcome About Me My Photos Blog (linked to external blog such as blogger)If you want the link to the external page to appear in the default navbar then do the following:
1 - create a blank page and name it the way you want it in the navbar.
2 - add an HTML Snippet to that page with the following code in it:
<script type="text/javascript">
parent.window.location = "URL TO THE EXTERNAL PAGE"; </script>
What this does is automatically redirect the viewer to the external page when the link in the navbar is clicked on.
My Demo Sites are setup this way. The Contents page for each site is redirected to a separate Contents site which contains the index of all the pages in the three demo sites. That way I only have to change the index on the Contents site instead of doing it for each site individually.
If you want the other page to open in a new window you'll have to create a separate text based hyperlink and use the Inspector/Link pane to link the text to it and check the open in new window option. If you need to have that in the navbar you can create a texbased navbar, hide the default one and set your links as needed in the Inspector/Link pane. This is a demo page of a Text Based Navbar.

Hi Ranendra,
For basic understanding of Dashboards and Models you can use standard Templates or samples which ll come along with dashboard designer(Formly Xcelsius) installation.
For path File-->Templates(or Samples).
Under Templates you ll have different categories and for each you ll find the dashboard Templates.

I want to create an animated nav bar in Flash, that will
remain in the left frame of my Dreamweaver doc while it opens pages
in the main frame. It looks like the proper way to do it is assign
the links to the buttons in Flash, but how do you tell Flash which
frame to load the page into in the html doc?If you want to use Flash for navigation, consider this -
1. Some people don't have Flash installed - what do they do?
2. Search engines don't parse Flash links - your site will
not be spidered
3. Screen assistive devices don't parse Flash links - what
will those users
do?
4. DW cannot maintain links within a Flash movie, so if you
move or rename
a linked file, your navigation will break - what will you do?
It's usually a very bad idea for these reasons...

Using a MsAccess database with Dreamweaver CS4?
Hi Everyone,
I have a question concerning using a Microsoft Access Database with Dreamweaver.
First, I was wondering if this was possible. Second, if it is, could someone give me instructions or a link on how to do this. I am pretty new to Dreamweaver, code, etc..., so simpler instructions on how to acheive this would be great.
Here is some information...
1) I am running Windows XP SP2
2) I am using Microsoft Office 2003 (Acces included)
3) I am using Dreamweaver CS4
4) I have installed XAMMP (Apache,MySQL, FileZilla, and PHPmyAdmin, as far as I know)
If anyone needs more information, I'll be hapy to share it as soon as possible.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Musicman1994The choice of database really depends on which server-side technology you plan to use, and what you're actually planning to use it for.
Access was designed to create databases for small office systems. Although I personally found it very confusing, a lot of people like it and say it's easy to use. However, its major drawback is that it creates very large files; and as soon as the website gets a reasonable amount of traffic, Access has a tendency to freeze or lock up. You can create your database in Access and then export it to another database system, such as Microsoft SQL Server or MySQL. But it's better to start with the database that you ultimately plan using.
I certainly wouldn't recommend developing anything in ASP and then attempting to convert the website to PHP. Although all server-side programs share common features and structures, the code is completely different. So, take some time over choosing your technology first. If you have never developed in ASP, you should be aware that Microsoft stopped developing it about ten years ago. It's still popular and widely available, but ASP is likely to dwindle in usefulness as the years go by. Use PHP or ColdFusion, both of which are supported by Dreamweaver. The other main alternative is ASP.NET, but that's no longer supported by Dreamweaver. -
I have been trying to add the web addresses in my Fireworks nav bar drop down menus. I can't get them to "take". I add the address, click done and some of them save and some don't. I am pulling my hair out! HELP!
the easiest way is constructing your menu with frame labels
now i have no way of knowing how you are constructing it ..so
this may not work for you ...i assume that you have created a main
button ...that has been converted into a symbol & then
duplicated to create all other buttons
okay here it goes ..i hope i dont confuse you
i will explain how to create 1 button with 4 submenu items
with the trems that i mentioned above
but iam not going to explain all the details of creating a
whole nav bar
because it just takes too much typing ...i assume you already
know this
sooo ! ...lets say this is the Portfoio button ...inside the
symbol now
create 8 layers ...the order is going from top to bottom
actions
labels
submenu Logos
submenu Illustration
submenu Animation
submenu Coolstuff ."you will name your button items how you
like" ...
main button....lets just say Portfolio !
invisible btn for main button
so now on with the hard stuff
create 20 frames ...stop action on frame 1 ...frame 9
...frame 20
on the labels layer now ....name frame1 "Closed" ...frame 10
"Open"
on the submenu Logos layer ...create a keyframe on frame 10
all frames before the 10th frame will be blank frames
repeat that for the rest of the submenu items
on the main button layer you will just place the main
Portfolio button on frame 1
& on the invisible button layer ..the inv btn is going to
be placed on frame 10
all this is iam hoping your have converted everything into1
symbol
all you need to do know is attach code to the main Portfolio
button & the invisible button
so click on the Portfolio button
on (rollOver) {
gotoAndStop("open");
invisible button
on (rollOver){
gotoAndPlay("closed");
& that should be good ...very simple !
then just repeat this process for every button that makes up
your nav bar ....& it doesn't matter if your inv buttons
overlap each other or your main nav buttons are touching each other

How do you turn off Flash audio when using captivate Nav bar?
Hi Guys and Girls
I have an imported flash file that plays an audio track,
I have no problem turning the audio off, when the user uses
the button within the flash file to go to the next slide in the
captivate movie...
on(release){
stopAllSounds();
_root.rdcmndNextSlide = 1;
BUT if the user decides to use the navigation bar within the
captivate movie it all goes pair shape.. The flash audio continues
to play into the next slide. Anyone have a know how to solve this
problem?
How do you tell flash to stop playing the audio when using
the captivate navigation bar?
(The flash file is a flip book and the audio NEEDS to stay
within the flash file)
Cheers
Aquil0Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This totally solved my issue. I had a Captivate 4 movie using an embeded animation that had audio. It would play the audio again when the next slide appeared. I have to use Captivate 4, because my audience still uses Flash 7 (yikes). However, if you have Captivate 5 and are having this problem there is a widget that solves this issue: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2010/11/animations-%E2%80%93-audio-sync-issue.html#commen t-3872

How to use a progress bar with java mail?
Hi, i'm new here.
I want if someone can recommend me how to show a progress bar with java mail.
Because, i send a message but the screen freeze, and the progress bar never appear, after the send progress finish.
ThanksSo why would the code we post be any different than the code in the tutorial? Why do you think our code would be easier to understand? The tutorial contains explanations about the code.
Did you download the code and execute it? Did it work? Then customize the code to suit your situation. We can't give you the code because we don't know exactly what you are attempting to do. We don't know how you have changed to demo code so that it no longer works. Its up to you to compare your code with the demo code to see what the difference is. -
Is there a way to use a progress bar with Xerces XML Parser?
My program is parsing very long XML files that take several minutes to parse. I am using Xerces as the parser. I would like to use a progress bar to show the progress, but I haven't found any way to get Xerces to give progress updates. Is this possible?
Use teh SAX parser and listen to SAX events. Example:
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
//jaxp-api.jar:
import javax.xml.parsers.SAXParser;
import javax.xml.parsers.SAXParserFactory;
//sax.jar:
import org.xml.sax.Attributes;
import org.xml.sax.InputSource;
import org.xml.sax.XMLReader;
import org.xml.sax.helpers.DefaultHandler;
import mine.IOUtils;
* Handler to read content from (large) XML sources and send events to registered XMLListeners. Use this class to read
* big (multiple megabytes) XML files via SAX and listen to XML events to process XML elements.
* For small (less than a megabyte) XML files, it's more convenient to use the DOM API
* to read the XML into a DOM document and perform XPath commands. DOM is easier to handle but has
* the drawback that the complete XML content is stored in one big DOM document object in memory.

How do I create a horizontal nav-bar with CSS, set to an exact width?
I have a problem that I need help with. All I need to do is
to create a simple text-based horizontal navigation bar using CSS.
I have seen many CSS tutorials online about how to make a
horizontal navigation bar using unordered lists, but they all seem
to either set the bar to be centred or to the full width of the
page, or if they do set it to be a certain width, then the buttons
within that width are centred within pre-defined widths for each
one.
Unfortunately none of these help me - let me explain my
scenario...
I have an area that is exactly 700px wide. In this area I
want to put 5 text hyperlinks.
I want the first text-link to be aligned to the left of my
700px width, and I want the last text-link to be aligned to the
right of the 700px width.
I want the spaces between each of these text-links to all be
the same.
The only definite known width is the overall 700px. I will
not know the width of each text-link, as (a) they are all live
text, and (b) the phrases for each could change.
I have mocked up a quick diagram showing in more detail
precisely what I mean:
http://www.nothowitlooks.com/temp/navbar.gif
Can anyone please help me with this?
Thanks..oO(BrettArchibald)

Only in your fantasy. In practice there are always some
limits enforced
by the used material or technology. You simply can't violate
such basic
rules and laws, even if you would like to.
>Whether you use text, images, tables, CSS, or even
>Flash, the objective is first to design the site with
both your client's and
>their customers needs and expectations, and then to build
it, regardless of how
>difficult-to-code that design may or may not be.
It always looks good on paper, but not every design can be
turned into
practice. This not only applies to web design, but to almost
every kind
of development. Often enough you have to find compromises or
workarounds
if the engineers say "won't work". The problem is that many
designers
don't understand this or don't want to. They're just thinking
and living
in their perfect theoretical world, but have no idea of how
things work
in the real world. And many theoretical things simply don't
work there.
Each medium has its own rules and laws. Some things may work
well for a
printed paper for example, but not in the Web and vice versa.
Of course
you can try to break these rules, but you'll definitely fail.
>You should not compromise your
>design because of a lack of coding knowledge.
It's not lack if coding knowledge if you refuse to try things
that are
impossible or don't make sense. It's quite the opposite,
because you
don't have to waste your time with something that won't work
at all.
>If you don't know how to do it
>yourself, then find out how to do it (which is what I was
*originally* trying
>to do here, remember?).
Quite easy. Surf the web, and if you see something like what
you want,
just have a look at the source code or post the URL here. If
it can be
done, then it already has been done. Just show us an example
and we'll
happily explain it to you.
> Secondly, no, a client does NOT have to accept that
"some things simply can't
>be done or don't make any sense in the Web".
Sure they have. The client is not always king. And if they
insist on
stupid things and always know it better - why the hell are
they hiring
you instead of doing it themselves? If they want their work
to be done
by an expert, they should also _listen_ to that expert and
let him do
his work properly instead of telling him how he should do it.
That's not
going to work.
>Like I said earlier, some clients
>are not interested in hearing about how what they want
cannot be done, and any
>attempts to tell them so only serve to convince them to
take their work, and
>their money, to someone else. Most clients, thankfully,
are adaptable and
>willing to reason. However, some are not, and if these
clients take their money
>elsewhere, you lose the job and you don't get paid. It's
that simple.
Let's say you want a little film to be made about whatever.
Would you
tell the director where he should position the cameras, the
lights and
all the stuff? He already knows _what_ you want to get, so
why don't you
just let him decide _how_ to do it? It's his job! And if he
says that
filming directly towards bright sunlight usually doesn't work
well, you
should respect his expert opinion.

>what I get.
You asked for advice and you got proper answers. We really
don't need
people here just looking for the answers they want to hear.
Often enough
people are coming here looking for a cure to a particular
problem, while
it would be much easier to avoid that problem right from the
beginning.
Of course if they don't want to hear such alternatives -
their problem.
> Secondly, I was not aware that "regulars" to this site
had any special

It's not the best idea to bite the hand that feeds you. It's
the group's
regulars who answer almost all of the questions here. And
most of them
also know how to use a killfile.

So do we. If someone wants something that's not possible or
not going to
work, we'll "make our opinions known". After all that's what
a free
discussion board/forum/group is for.
> As for the "just leave" suggestion for supposedly
"insulting regulars", I

Want to try again?
With pure CSS and text links it can't be done within the
given
constraints. I even doubt that it's possible with a table. So
either
drop the fixed 700px width or the equal space between the
buttons.
> P.S: Seeing as though pedantry seems to be something
you're interested in,

You can keep the 'e'. In German we have more than enough of
them.
And if you would be familiar with web design, then you would
have known
where this ironic "error message" came from.
Your turn.

Using MySql and PHP with Dreamweaver on a Mac
Hello all,
As always if the answers to these questions are obscenely
obvious please humour me.
I use XHTML and CSS in my websites and realise that it is
time that I dabbled with SSI. So I've started using PHP.
However, I have been following the installation directions of
MySql and am running into problems. I am installing the relavent
software and am then unable to find it on my Mac, the startup files
are there but the actual MySql data appears to not be installed
despite my computer telling me it is...... I am using a G3 running
OSX 10.4 is this good enough? I noticed talk of needing a PowerPC
or Intel mac. Is this the case?
Also, would I need MySql installed on my actual computer if
the my servers have it already? And does Dreamweaver 8 have both of
these programs installed as standard?
If you could help out I would be very appreciative as I would
like to learn this stuff and I appear to be struggling at the
outset....
Cheers

MySQL is a relational database management system that
comprises a
database server and several utility programs. Although you
install it
like any other program on a Mac, the similarity stops there.
First, the point about PowerPC and Intel Macs is that there
are
different versions of the MySQL installer for each type of
processor.
I'm pretty sure that a G3 is OK, but you must choose the
PowerPC version
of MySQL, not the 64-bit or x86 (Intel Mac) version.
Once you have installed MySQL, you need to drag the
MySQL.PrefPane icon
from the disk image onto your System Preferences. This
installs a
Preference Pane that enables you to start and stop MySQL. The
Preference
Pane has an option to start up MySQL automatically, but in my
experience, it doesn't work on Tiger. You need to open the
Preference
Pane, and click Start MySQL Server each time you start your
computer.
The best way to work with MySQL is to use a graphical
interface, such as
phpMyAdmin. As Osgood has mentioned, I have written a book
about PHP and
Dreamweaver, which goes into all the necessary details. It's
also very
Mac-friendly with separate instructions where necessary for
PC and Mac.
