Using a newer db version than what a COTS application supports
This is more of a general question ...
My manager today asked me what I thought about moving an application's back-end from SQL Server into Oracle. He was concerned because in SQL Server, they were repeatedly constrained in upgrading the database to newer versions, because the vendor was slow in approving newer versions of SQL Server. He didn't want to impact our plans to upgrade Oracle (95% of our data) because one application (5% of our data) was in conflict.
So it got me to thinking, has anyone ever had a problem using a newer version of the database, than what a vendor claims to support? I guess I'm thinking that as long as the software has a compatible client, then a newer database should be a safe gamble? Am I being naive? It just seems like with Oracle, newer versions bring in newer features, but rarely remove anything.

I wouldn't run a version of Oracle that the vendor didn't support. While it's true that Oracle isn't likely to remove a particular feature, adding a new feature can cause just as many problems-- you may find that query plans change, for example, or you may find bugs where the COTS vendor assumes that SQL behaves one way because it happens to do that in one version of Oracle but the behavior changes in a future version. Plenty of COTS software assumed that GROUP BY did an implicit ORDER BY because Oracle happened to implement GROUP BY by doing a sort. Until 10g, I believe, when hash group by's were introduced, and suddenly things that were supposed to be sorted weren't sorted anymore.
Normally, each COTS application would have its own separate database. That allows you to upgrade and patch other Oracle instances without worrying about whether the COTS vendor supports it. When the COTS vendor validates their application against the new version of the database, you then upgrade the COTS Oracle instance. So it normally doesn't affect your upgrade schedules for everything else in the world if one application wants to use an older version of Oracle.

My new IPad Mini tells me that I need Itunes 10.7 when connected to my Apple computer. When I try to up grade, I'm told that there is no newer version than what I have. IPad mini says I have system version 6.1.3. The ITunes version on the Mini is unknown.
The problem is that your Mac software is quite old. You must have a version of OS X on your Mac earlier than 10.6.8 (current is 10.8.3), so your particular version of OS X cannot support any later version of iTunes. (The current iTunes version is 11.0.2). In particular, your iTunes on your computer cannot deal with your iPad which has software that is much more current than your OS X operating system (and Mac iTunes).

Help I just moved my music files to a external hard drive and am using the new crappy version ( i know my opinion) of itunes and cant add the files to my libray it gives me the add file to library option but not the add folder to library option what am i doing wrong?
In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

My mac is a version 10.5.8. I just downloaded ios7, and it is telling me I need to download iTunes 11 to connect to my phone, but I don't have a new enough version. What do I do?! I think snow leopard was the last update I purchased. Is there a way to convert my phone back? I need to be able to update it, but don't have the money for a new computer.. Help!
10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. Leopard ran on both PPC and Intel Macs, but Snow Leopard runs only on Intel Macs. iTunes 11 will run on Snow Leopard, though I'm not sure whether iOS7 requires a higher system (Apple seem to specify only itunes 11 and not an OSX system so you may be OK). However if your Mac is a PPC you cannot proceed; if it's an Intel one you can purchase Snow Leopard in the Online Store (search for Snow Leopard to find it quickly) - it's not expensive. It's not possible to roll your phone back to iOS6.

I have just been told by Adobe that I have to UNINSTALL ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF THEIR APPLICATIONS IN ORDER TO USE THE NEW 2014 VERSIONS. No software update is worth the time it will take to do that!!!!! I don't know about the rest of you but I am woefully disappointed in Adobe. I pay on time every single month SINCE CREATIVE CLOUD BECAME AVAILABLE and now they place this on me? NOT HAPPY.

Susan Meredith: You folks don't understand. Most of us are very excited at the new "bells and whistles" that Adobe has introduced and in the past we've been able to QUICKLY update to the new version. We haven't had to uninstall anything to get the new. We are all working and have deadlines. This is A HARDSHIP ON ADOBE'S USERS AND THEY NEED TO FIX IT ON THAT END. Or give up some monthly fees.
Susan Meredith: There are many ways to uninstall. I can do it through "CleanMyMac". But now I don't trust that Adobe's programs will actually download and then I'm in trouble...and out of business. -

The iOS 6.01 killed the Apple SD reader on my IPad 3 (purchased new in May). What gives Apple? Support phone call useless. iOS installed today November 3 and dialog box came up say device no longer supported.
It's an Apple SD card reader (purchased the same week in Syracuse,NY) and it worked fine yesterday after part one of a Day of the Dead shoot in central Mexico.
As a professional journalist I traveled with the iPad and a Nikon D80 and lenses and flash. My MacBook would be addded weight so this application (the iPad) fits the bill.
I was in Paris for a month in October and shot thousands of photos. Often did not have wireless and used the iPad as a photo safe to store the photos.
Back in the Paris apartment the Photostream worked great.
So what gives Apple...I upgrade my Ipad 1 for an Ipad 3 and now it's useless in this application and the new iOS. Was there any warning or information that this would happen? Or did you test the iOs on the iPad 4? Afterall the iPad 3 is, what 5 months old?
But, and a big BUT Apple, I can buy an iPad 4 and use the thunderbolt SD card reader. Is this how you become a world class company???

We are an Apple family....My first Apple was an Apple II and had a Newtown (that still works).
And we now have an iPhone, 2 MacBookPros, 2 Apple TVs.
My other computer is an old PC that works with my professional weather station and also interfaces with my ham radio. While I dislike the stability of Windows the system allows me to tinker and work with other devices.
How can Apple not recognize that folks do want to do thing the way they have been and also abandon DVD/CD drives from computers yet at the same time Apple will sell you its own DVD/CD drive.
I have always loved my early AppleII but had to abandon it for writing and editing (early photo editing and design was still a dream then) because most companies "did not support Apple," I was told by corporate IT people. So a love hate period of using PCs.
Now Apple does not support users but it will sell us the latest gadget. This is stupid marketing and wrong consumption by America.
I don't want to trust the Cloud for everything and want the ability to edit and stroe photos with ease and not always reply on wi-fi.

first of all you are not addressing apple in these forums. We are all just users like you trying to help eachother out. I can almost guarantee they didn't pull the support for the card reader from ipad 3. As i have a nikon camera and d5000 and a card reader running on ipad 3 and i just did a import from the sd card after I read your comments. It could be a bug within your ipad. Try restarting the ipad, if you have everything back up to icloud do a full reset then restore from icloud.
Second, going off on a tangent about apple and their business practices, in support forums which are user based, really wont get you much help. We come here to help people like you and there are way to many folks who go out venting and we all heard it before and kinda getting bit tired off it.
Third, before doing proper diagnostics, rebooting, restoring ipad, using different SD card, try using usb connector directy to the camera, don't assume that apple pulled the plug on it. It could be a bug that slipped through testing however I highly doubt it since its working for me.
So try rebooting, restoring ipad from icloud (if you have back up), try inserting a different SD card. Since you are photographer you must have more then one. Try using the other connector that comes with camera kit. -
I am wondering if these sites are trying to get me to download Malware or viruses. If I go to the Firefox site and it says that I am using the most recent version, I believe what Mozilla is telling me and ask myself "why would a site tell me I need to update"? I only trust Mozilla and will not blindly download something without investigating. Am I being paranoid?

How do I add a print button that would print out pdf or different version than what is on the site?
I see this example on NY Times. If you pick any of their articles and click print or do the short cut (Command-P) ... (Control-P for windows), the layout of their article is completely customized and cleaner. It seems like they've edited the print look to be different than what you see on the website.
I find that very cool and something I've bent dying to achieve. My guess is that I could make a pdf to what I want the print look to be and have a print button read that instead of the website but I don't know, I need help with this.I have but it's not what I'm looking for. I want to edit what the printer will actually print when a reader clicks print. So if the page has a puzzle, for example, and the reader clicks print. The printer will print the puzzle in a different location on the page without some of the clutter that's on the site or have some message that's not originally present on the website.

When I try to use Quicktime Player I get message "install apple application support". Where do I go to get this?
Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.

Right-click the QuickTimeInstaller.exe, and select "Extract to QuickTimeInstaller". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "QuickTimeInstaller".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does the QuickTime Player launch properly now?

I want to install winXP on my iMac. It has OS 10.7.2 and uses a 27" display. I will use Bootcamp and create a separate partion for winXP. Bootcamp instructions call for a single disk winXP CD with Service Pack 2 on it. My version has winXP on one disk and Service pack 2 on another. Will this be a problem? If it is, is there a solution?
Tnx...K6jpjIf you just bought an iMac a week ago new, it WILL NOT support XP unless XP is inside a virtual machine. End of story. You will need Windows 7 if you plan to run Windows natively on any Mac in 2011.
Used models will run XP, though--from the Intel inception in '06 through the middle part of 2010.
However, consider that Microsoft wants XP gone--and badly so--even as it is extending security hotfix support through April 2014. This gives you two years and four months before you have to throw down for whatever's current at that time.
Windows 7 will give you a much better experience (dare I say more Mac-like?) than XP, as it seems to be better organized. The Taskbar, for instance, has become more like the OS X Dock in that you can "pin" things to it in a straightforward manner, unlike XP's seldom-used Quick Launch traybar.
7's also built to take advantage of all the snazzy new hardware you now have.
But don't let me sell it to you. It's really your call.

Using the new EPMDriverBasedRefresh function for What-if Analysis
Hi,
A new function is available that supposedly enables easy what-if modelling in BPC. This sounds great because currently for what-if analysis, you need to duplicate data in the database (using differnet categories or data sources) which can be time consuming and impact overall performance.
Has anyone got any experience with this EPMDriverBasedRefresh function? There is some documentation on SAP's userguide but there are no specifics on the type of logic that is supported for scenario outputs i.e. is it only Member Formula Logic (Account 1 x Account 2 = Account 3), or can it support more complex scenarios such as running through Default Logic (and any BAdIs you may have) to retrieve the modelled output? (This would be awesome!)

"This function enables you to refresh specific rows or columns of one or more reports, based on a specified range of data drivers whose values you can modify.
Additionally, you can specify to refresh a whole report that is outside of the specified range of data drivers.
This function can be used for example for what-if analysis."
My testing has found that it does not run default logic (where our driver-based calculation BAdI is called).
Any experience from fellow SDNers would be much apprecited! Otherwise I'll put a call into SAP to get the documentation expanded a little.

My points above lay out the problem and I get messages telling me it can't find the files....Why is it not working when it did just fine right up until you came out with version 4???

If the same, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

When I share the video it exports a different version than what appears in the timeline
I've had a really frustrating few days waiting for exports (to Apple Devices) and processing (when uploading to Vimeo). In my timeline appears the properly edited video, but when it gets shared, the video drops clips that I have added, and includes clips that I removed early in the editing process, and gives me a final product that is not my intended video. Please help, need to get this video uploaded for a client yesterday!
Changes made inside compounds are reflected in the project - there is one caveat and I wonder if that was the case for you: compounds, like any other clip, are trimmed to a given duration in the timeline. If your changes made that duration change, you'd have to adjust in the project timeline. For example if you create a 1 minute compound and then edit in its own timeline so that it beco es, say, 5 minutes, it will still be trimmed to 1 minute in the project timeline, and you may have to drag the edges of the clip to extend as much as you wish. This is NOT a bug.
